2 Clubhouse News NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 New Bern Golf & Country Club New Member Incentive NBGCC will not be conducting a membership drive this year. Our membership numbers are very healthy and the value of your membership can be seen by the amount of activity at the Club. The Board has reinstated the incentive of two months due credit for the primary sponsor of new members. Effective April 1, 2015 $2,500 Initiation Fee $1,500 Jr. Initiation Fee Primary Sponsor will receive two months free dues, equal to the lesser amount of the dues paid by the new member or the dues paid by the current member. For example, if a Jr. Member recruits a Regular Member, the free dues will be the Jr. Member dues amount. 3 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL Clubhouse News NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 Well, it is finally here The pool officially opens on Saturday, May 23, 2015, Memorial Day Weekend. We will end the kickoff weekend with our annual Memorial Day Pool party on Monday, May 25th. Make plans now to attend this great event with a buffet by the pool and great tunes from the DJ. Check the pool section for all the exciting news about the pool. May also means Mother s Day. Everyone please remember all the very special mothers, which play a pivotal role in raising each and every one of us. So make plans now to attend the Mother s Day buffet. It is sure to sell out. Also, parents, make note of all the camps available this summer. Between Tennis, Golf and Pool camps, there is a camp just about every week of the summer. Be sure to make a note of the dates and get your children signed up for these wonderful week long camps. REMINDERS: When parking, please do not park at the end of parking lot rows, as it makes it difficult for cars that are properly parked to back out of their spot. Shirt tails shall be tucked in at all times while playing golf. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray. Walkers please be aware of golfers at all times on the golf course. Golfers have the right-of-way at all times and getting hit by a golf ball can be extremely dangerous and painful. Walking on the golf course is done at the walker s risk. Hidden Number In the newsletter is a hidden number. If you find your number hidden in the newsletter, you will receive two dinner entrees of your choice this month, excluding any beverages, gratuity and sales tax. 7 Summer Camps NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 Junior Golf, Tennis and Swim Camp Dates Monday, June 22nd - Thursday, June 25th Monday, July 13th - Thursday, July 16th Monday, August 3rd - Thursday, August 6th Ages 7-13 Camp will run from 9am to 2pm each day. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Campers will need to bring sunscreen, tennis shoes, golf clubs - if they have them. If not, the golf staff has plenty of junior clubs for the campers to use - and anything they would need for the pool. Cost will be $ and camps are limited to the first 40 campers. Sign up by calling the Golf Shop or Tennis Shop. 8 Pool News NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 NBGCC Pool Opens Saturday, May 23rd School is winding down and things are heating up around the pool as we get ready for another summer pool season at NBGCC. We are excited for another great summer season for Our new Head Lifeguard this summer is veteran guard, Jay King. Jay is excited to be returning along with many of the old staff. There will also be some new faces this year. We are scheduling many exciting events for all ages.we are bringing back 2 sessions of our week long Summer Fun Day Camp. There will be activities like arts and crafts, daily swim time, various sports and games and fun on the RIVER. The first session will be the week of June 23rd - June 26th. It s first come, first serve so register at the sign-in station once the pool opens 2 nd session will be August 4 th - August 7 th. Also make sure to check out your upcoming newsletters for our other events like poolside cookouts, buffets, pool parties and the popular kid s poolside movie nights. We are bringing back 3 sessions of our week long Summer Fun Day Camp called Camp Barnacle. There will be activities like arts and crafts, daily swim time, various sports and games and fun on the RIVER. The first session will be the week of June 29th-July 2nd. It s first come, first serve so register today in the clubhouse or at the sign-in station once the pool opens The 2 nd session will be July 20 th -July 23 rd. The final session for Camp Barnacle will be August 10 th -August 13 th. The cost of Camp Barnacle is $ per session and includes lunch daily, all craft supplies, and Campswag like hats or t-shirts. The Opening day for the pool will be Saturday May 23rd (Saturday before Memorial Day) THE POOL HOURS WILL BE: (Monday-Friday 10:00 am till 7:00 pm) (Saturday and Sunday 11:00am till 7:00pm) Late closing days will still be: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights till 9:00pm Private Swim Lessons We will be offering swim lessons again this year. Veteran guard, Meredith Medlin, will be heading up our swim lessons again this summer. There will be registration forms available at the lifeguard station with dates and times for group lessons. Private one-on-one lessons are also available. Just get in touch with Meredith and check for availability. Swim lessons are taught in the mornings before the pool opens. This insures privacy and safety for all of our swimmers. Many member s children have learned to swim and feel comfortable around the water from our qualified instructors. Special Events at the Pool There are many special events scheduled for the pool this summer. We always have a huge July 4 th celebration along with Member-Guest and Member-Member tournament weekends. Golf, Tennis, and Swim Camp is always popular so sign up fast, as those slots fill quickly. Check with the Pro Shops for dates and sign-ups. There will also be special poolside buffets and dinners for members throughout the season. Private parties can also and must be scheduled in advance only before or after regular pool hours. These are made through Club Manager, Patrick Dill. We are going to continue the special fee schedule for pool rental this year. A flat fee of $75.00 per hour reserves the pool for you and your guests. This includes the lifeguards, the servers, tables, and everything you need for a great party by the pool. Your favorite food and beverages can be purchased from the club for a pool party you ll never forget. We look forward to another safe and exciting summer around the NBG&CC pool. NBGCC Swim Team - The Stingrays NBG&CC also has a summer league swim team (THE STINGRAYS). The swim team is open to all members children from ages 6 to 16. The swim team will practice several mornings each week and compete against other local pools in meets during the summer. The final event is the city meet. It is held at the YMCA and is an all-day event. NBGCC swimmers still hold records at the city meet and broke some last year. Watch for an about a parent meeting and sign-up. Veteran Guard and Swim Team Coach, Matt Burns, is looking forward to another great season for the Stingrays ( Matt just graduated from Pheifer University as a four year Varsity swimmer where he still holds a couple of school records in the breast stroke.) #1511 PAGE 8

9 TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Tennis News NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 May is one of my favorite months of the year; league season is wrapping up, the weather is warmer and the summer is well on its way. It never ceases to amaze me how breathtaking Spring is in Trent Woods. So that being said, let s get geared up for summer The dates for the summer camps are posted in the Club newsletter for this month. We hope you can find time for the kids to come out and enjoy all the Club has to offer. From the sunny confines of the tennis center, we welcome spring/summer with open arms. Tennis Court Resurfacing Complete Your courts are done All the clay courts were resurfaced last month and they are playing exceptionally well. Come out and slide around a little and have some fun. The courts need to get as much play as possible, to pack the surface down to get ready for the summer time rain. So come out and crush some clay, while you crush the competition. We look forward to seeing you on the resurfaced courts Join the Tennis Ball Machine Club Work on those forehands, backhands, lobs and drop shots by joining the Ball Machine Club For $180 a year, you have unlimited use of the ball machine to improve your tennis strokes and ball placement. The rental is billed on your April 30th statement each year for 12 months of use from May 1st - April 30th. Rental is prorated on the month you join. Tennis Summer Camps Dates June 15th -18th July 6th - 9th July 20th - 23rd July 27th - 30th August 10th - 13th Summer time is coming soon, so if you have not picked a date for Summer Camps please do so. 10 Tennis News NEWSLETTER MAY 2015 Tennis Member of the Month This person is the glue that keeps all the men together. He is smart, witty and sarcastically funny. He is always on time and together. Even with his busy work schedule he still finds time to share positive advice for other members as they play. We appreciate this gentleman who keeps tennis in a unique a perspective do you know him? Can you guess who it is? We at the NBGCC tennis department would like to recognize Mr. Jeff Medlin. Jeff always has a smile on his face and is quick to pat you on the back with a few words of encouragement. He makes your day on the tennis court an enjoyable one. So the next time you see Jeff at the Club, let him know he is truly appreciated. Junior Tennis Member of the Month This is a wonderful category that we are proud to bring you every month. We select one of our juniors who has the love of tennis in their heart and leads by example. They demonstrate how tennis should be played both physically and mentally. Heart, desire, dedication, thoughtfulness and kindness mixed in with humility are the qualities that would best describe our player of the month. His parents have both played tennis and still love the game. He has three siblings, that all look up to this nice young man. He is a rising star here in Eastern NC and we hope to see big things from him in the future. This month we want to recognize Asuka Lavigne. Asuka is also an accomplished musician, as well as, a boy scout. Currently, he is working towards his Eagle Scout designation. What a wonderful young man we are so thankful to know. His proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. David Lavigne. Way to go Asuka and keep up the good work We are so very proud of you Director s Tip of the Month It s all about the recovery position when you are playing this great game of peaks and valleys. It is always important to remember not where you have been, but where you are planning to go NEXT. When you are playing a tennis match, it is very important to recover, after every shot, back to the spot on the court that will give you the upper hand on the next shot. How do you do this you ask? You simply anticipate your opponents next move. Like the game of chess, you are seeing how your move affects their move and how their next move will affect your response. When hitting an offensive shot deep, it is important for you to recognize how that shot pushes your opponent off the court and if it does, you should move up into the court to take away the time and the space they have to recover. Taking away time and space will force your opponent into a risky low percentage shot and you now have the ability to control the player and the point on your terms. Recovery position will help you take better shots, control the court and win matches. Good luck and RECOVER PAGE 10
