2 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL Clubhouse News August is another busy month here at NBGCC. The Pizza Pool Parties ha ve been extremel y popular, and we will be having two of them during August. We also have Golf, Tennis & Swim Camp, as well as Camp Barnacle in August. These summer camps give our young members the opportunity to meet other young members, as well as learn about different sports. Speaking with Todd Holt, our Golf Course Superintendent, the current golf course renovation is coming along great and on schedule. We are still planning to open the golf course sometime in early September. When it is finished, NBGCC will definitely be the best golf course in Eastern North Carolina. When parking, please do not park at the end of parking lot rows as it makes it difficult for cars that are properly parked to back out of their spot. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray. Walkers please do not use the course for any non-golf purposes, such as walking, jogging, biking and the like between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00 pm. 5 Pool News ATTENTION: ATTENTION: ATTENTION: ATTENTION: Craven County Schools will start back on August 28 th. The pool will open at 4:00pm and will only be open in the afternoons once school begins until Labor Day. Pool Events & Private Pool Parties Private parties must be scheduled in advance only before or after regular pool hours. These are made through the Club Manager, Patrick Dill. We are going to continue the special fee schedule for pool rental this year. A flat fee of $75.00 per hour reserves the pool for you and your guests. This includes the lifeguards, the servers and tables. Your favorite food and beverages can be purchased from the Club for a pool party you ll never forget. We look forward to another safe and exciting summer around the NBG&CC pool. CONGRATULATIONS NBG&CC STINGRAYS The Annual City Summer Splash Swim meet was Held on July 22 nd at the YMCA in New Bern. The Stingrays competed against the other swim teams in our summer league: The YMCA, River Bend, The Emerald, Taberna, and Courts Plus were among the teams. The Stingrays did well winning many races, winning ribbons and medals. All of their hard work really paid off. Congratulations to the swimmers and coaches (Abbie and Mary Grace). We will have all of the final results and photos in our upcoming newsletter. PAGE 5

6 Pool News Camp Barnacle 2017 The Pool started a Summer day camp and it s been a big hit every session. The kids who sign up become our campers and our lifeguards become Counselors at CAMP BARNACLE. Our Campers have loved arts and crafts, river activities, and of course, swimming at the pool We have done stand-up paddleboarding from Stand up Outfitters, shot BB guns, caught lots of fish off the docks and even canoed on the Trent River. We had Italian Ice treats in the hot sun and even played on inflatable water slides. My hands are still different colors from the tiedyed camp T-shirts CAMP BARNACLE IS ON FACEBOOK NBGCC CAMP BARNACLE You can join us for the last session of the summer August 7 th -August 10 th (The cost is $ for the week and that includes everything and lunch daily) Here are some Pool Rules reminders to help everyone have a safe summer : The pool is for the use of members and their families. There is a sign-in station at the pool entrance. All members must sign in and register their guests. The Fee for out-of-town guests is $1.00 daily. The Fee for in-town guests is $5.00 daily. In-town guests can only use the pool once per month. Please follow directions from the Lifeguards. Non-Swimmers are not allowed in the deep water unless under direct supervision of an adult. Take advantage of the baby pool for all non-swimmers Please use swim diapers and plastic swimmy covers for all swimmers that are not potty trained. No Glass allowed in the Pool area. There is not smoking or vaping inside the fenced in area of the pool. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied and directly supervised by a responsible adult. PAGE 6

7 NEWSLETTER Summer Camps AUGUST 2017 Camp Barnacle Dates & Sign-Ups August 7th-10th It s time to start planning your summer and gearing up for our summer swim camps. Sign up will not begin until the pool opens on Saturday, May 27th. At that time you may sign up at the pool or call The cost is $135 per child. Camp Dates Tennis/Golf/Swim The cost is $ per session, which includes lunch each day, snacks and a camp gift. The camp runs Monday to Thursday from 9am to 2pm. Maximum will be 40 kids, ages 7 and up. August 14th-17th Tennis Camps Sign-ups The tennis summer camp schedule is out and you can call or sign up in the Tennis Shop. We hope to see all your wonderful children and grandchildren this year. 8 TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Welcome to the end of summer. This is the month kids start to head back to school and we here in the tennis department start to get ready for the fall USTA schedule. This is also the best month to tune up all your tennis gear: restring your racquet, check your shoes for wear to see if you need some new ones for the upcoming season or just a new grip to keep that new racquet feel. Whatever you need we are here to service your equipment to give you the confidence to play well. Tennis News Ladies Tennis Association Play Day - Wimbledon White Out Night We had a great turn out last month for the LTA Play Day in conjunction with the Wimbledon Tournament. The ladies had strawberries & cream and champagne, while playing in their all white tennis outfits. The tennis was GREAT and the music was a lot of fun. One special part of the event was when Mrs. Teresa Warren came out to hit the first ceremonial tennis ball. Thank you to all the members of the LTA for making events like this come to life and be able to be enjoyed by the LTA members. Directors Tip of the Month When the heat is on, figuratively and literally, how do you handle this component of tennis? The answer is: composure. How you compose yourself in the heat of the battle depends on your ability to reason with yourself in a calm and composed manner. Never let the moment become too big for you to see a clear path to physical and mental success. 9 Member of the Month This member has been a champion at NBGCC for many years when I say a champion, I truly mean a champion. He was a Doubles Champion in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1997, and Basically he was THE doubles champion here in the 90 s. He is still playing at a high level to this day and loves the game with a true passion and determination that is unparalleled. A true champion in every sense of the word and a gentleman on and off the court. He just recently retired and is a husband, father and grandfather to a wonderful family of tennis players, three generations. Do you know who it is? Do you remember some of his memorable matches here at NBGCC? We are talking about Dr. Ken Wilkins and I plan on holding him to his assurance that he will be playing more tennis now that he has formally retired from medicine. Congratulations Doc on a stellar physicians career and a fabulously decorated tennis career as well. We all hope you keep up the exemplary play on the tennis courts. 11 Golf News AROUND THE COURSE WITH TODD HOLT As we head into August our renovation project is going well. I thought answering some of the most asked questions would be a great idea for this article. When are we going to open? Our target goal is September 1st. We are on track for this date, however, if I feel that we are not in position for a positive reopening with our greens and conditioning then this will get pushed back. I will have a final answer once we get into mid- August. Is 18 green smaller? We went from a 4100 sq.ft. green to 3950 sq.ft. So yes, we did. I feel that the design of the hole and the characteristics of our new 18 green offers a fantastic finishing par 3. #1400 Is 18 green shorter? Yes, it is moved about 9 yards shorter center to center. Once we reestablish level tees and include some length on the back of exiting grades, I think you will find it plays about 5 yards shorter, with the exception of positioning back tees. This allows for a possible increase of 12 yards. Why does 10 have a circle on it? We regraded an area on the back off the green to soften it. This should be ready in time for reopening. Can I practice on the greens? No, please limit your on-course activities to practice tees 2 and 8 and viewing is acceptable anywhere else. A few points to consider: As we get the grass in shape and redefine the sand traps, we will be able to define the edge of the hazard. The fairways will be getting a last coring and rolling in the beginning of August. This is maximizing our conditioning program and smoothing out the playing surface. Our tees will be sodded with the same turf type as the collars and will be laser leveled and expanded to offer a quality first shot off every hole.the four sets of tees will be positioned so that every player has the ability to play the same golf course with a maximized experience for all golfers. We still have many items to address, and I would like to say thank you for your patience. 14 Golf News Strive for 35 Junior golf program Mission: The New Bern Golf & Country Club Strive for 35 Golf Programs mission is to provide the junior golfers a chance to learn the basics of the game and a chance to improve as a player. Juniors will learn the rules of the game, proper etiquette, good sportsmanship, and having fun with other junior golfers. At the end of this program the junior golfer will be able to go out on the golf course by their self and know all aspects of the game. Fees: For $100/month you receive: Group Lessons on every Tuesday at 4:00pm or 5:00pm Testing Day on Saturday Afternoon (1 st Tee Time around 4:30) Additional Golf Lessons at a reduced rate ($15 per lesson) Strive for 35 Starter Kit (Bag Tag, Sleeve of Balls, Tees, Ball Marker) There are two semesters in the year. Fall is September-November. Spring is February-April. How it works: All junior golf students will start at the same distance when starting this program. After they complete the stage by passing with a score of 35 or better, then they will proceed to the next stage of the program. Failure to complete the stage will require the student to try the same stage again. There are 6 stages in the program: Stage One- The first stage will require the student to pass from the fringe to 30 yards. Stage Two- The second stage will require the student to pass from 30 to 70 yards. Stage Three- The third stage will require the student to pass from 70 to 120 yards. Stage Four- The fourth stage will require the student to pass from 120 to 180 yards. Stage Five- The fifth stage will require the student to pass from 180 to 230 yards. Stage Six- The sixth and final stage will require the student to pass from the tee box according to their age. After the completion of Stage Three, students will be able to play without an adult. Testing: During a month there will be 3-4 testing periods for the players to advance stages. These tests will be scheduled weekly and will give the player the on course experience to improve their game. Anyone is allowed to caddie for the student when they are taking the test. Students must walk during the completion of the hole. They can be shuttled by cart to the next hole.
