2 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL With the last membership drive, we received more than 75 new members. Those members, plus the ones from the previous membership drive, resulted in over 150 new members using the facilities at the Club. If you see someone you don t know, introduce yourself and welcome them to our Club. Let s make all the new members feel they are a welcome addition to the NBGCC family. On Friday, October 17, 2014 we will be having our first ever End of Summer Party. We have hired a great band through East Coast Entertainment and they will be here to help us sendoff summer in a great way. There will be no charge for this event, and we will be having a cookout for those who wish to buy dinner. So gather up your friends and come enjoy a great party to say goodbye to summer and hello to fall. REMINDERS: When parking, please do not park at the end of parking lot rows. It makes it difficult for cars that are properly parked to back out of their spot. Shirt tails shall be tucked in at all times while playing golf. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray. Walkers please be aware of golfers at all times on the golf course. Golfers have the right-of-way at all times and getting hit by a golf ball can be extremely dangerous and painful. Walking on the golf course is done at the walker s risk. 3 Clubhouse News NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2014 LES WE FORGET, BILL STREET This month brings us to the year 1994 and some new names in the Club history, beginning with Louis Corning, as our President. He and his wife, Madelon, had three children: Mary Jane, Beth and Avery. Louis had a long distinguished career with Carolina Telephone, retiring as Vice President of Operations of United Telephone Southeast U.S.G. Group. Phoebe Briley again took the honors for the Ladies Championship. Phoebe owned Phoebe s Wallpaper & Paint. Her husband, James, is a CPA. Don Grosz won the Men s Championship. Don worked for Woodruff Distributing Company. He was the perfect example of what a three-quarter swing could do, bringing the club back nice and easy. George Slaughter won the Seniors Championship that year. Married to Sandy (Kilby), he enjoyed a successful career in the Naval Investigative Service. George was quite the athlete in high school; playing football, basketball and baseball. He later was inducted into the New Bern High School Sports Hall of Fame for football. Wacho, as George was known at the Club, was a great competitor, friend and neighbor. Let me offer a special thank you to Toni Taglieri for her assistance with this article. 6 TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Tennis News NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2014 Welcome, welcome, welcome This is the phrase we have been saying at the tennis center quite a bit lately. We are so blessed to have all these GREAT new families who have joined NBGCC. The tennis center staff has seen a large new group of tennis enthusiasts due to the membership drive. We could not be happier to see the tennis center so busy and full of energy. Because we have all this activity at the tennis facility, we want to let everyone know that our court space is limited, so PLEASE call ahead to reserve your court. Reserving courts enables us to address your tennis needs and requests. The entire tennis staff is truly appreciative to the membership for supporting all of the tennis programs and events. Now let s get out and enjoy the great fall weather by hitting some tennis balls After School Program The NBGCC Kids Jr. Training & After School Program has been a huge success I would like to thank Tom Nguyen and John Chapman for providing excellent instruction and fun match play training. Hopefully we can have a few champions coming from NBGCC. It has been a personal joy to see all the kids enjoying the game and excited about tennis. The best part is they are wanting to practice and play on their own when they are not in class. That is how you know that we are making a difference in their lives in a positive way. So thank you to all the families who are involved with us on a weekly basis. Pretty in Pink Breast Cancer Research Fundraiser Friday October 24 th - 9:00 am Annually, the NBGCC Ladies Tennis Association puts together this fundraiser for research to help stop this terrible disease. Last year, it was the decision of the fundraising participants to keep the money raised right here in our own community. We are so proud to hold this event every year and we hope you can participate to make a difference. So wear your PINK Light snacks will be provided and lots of tennis in as much pink clothing, accessories and adornments we can find. We stand as one to make a difference in many women s lives. 7 Tennis News NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2014 Director s Tip of the Month Court positioning and strategy are two subjects we often get asked at the tennis center. We feel that it is two of the most important aspects of tennis. How do you work these two items into your tennis game? I am here to tell you it takes time, patience and practice. The game of tennis is very mental and you need to prepare for the long haul, not the short term gain. When you control the positioning of your opponent with specific strategic shots, then you have a high percentage chance of winning the point. Notice I didn t say win the point, because that is where the practice comes in. TOC, Time On Court is one of our favorite phrases because without it, you can t put a winning strategy together and consistency is part of the equation. So remember, spend the time necessary on your game to have a winning strategy. That will put your opponent in an uncomfortable position so you can win more points than they do. Always keep this in mind: your expectation level should always meet your participation level. Now let s go hit some winners Cardio Tennis Class We have had such a positive response to our Cardio Tennis Class on Tuesday nights at 7 pm that we have now opened up a morning session as well. We are offering a Thursday morning class at 10:30 am. It has been well attended and we expect it to grow. If you want to burn off those extra calories or get ready for some fun at the Club, then come on out Thursday mornings to start off your day. We hope to see you on the courts moving to the pumped up beat of Cardio Tennis League Tennis Update Well, we are now finishing up our fall USTA league season and moving into winter. We are so proud of all our Men s and Ladies teams here at NBGCC. We had 4 teams (2 Men and 2 Ladies ) competing in two different combo divisions and they all did very well. Thanks to all who signed up, reworked their schedules and competed on a regular basis. We hope the winter schedule provides the Club with more exciting match play. The overall low 12 and ties from those participants that play from the white tees on Friday & Saturday will qualify for Sundays round and a chance at being the 2014 Men s Club Champion. In addition to this year s SEARS CUP the MGA will be taking $2 from each entry in the 6 qualifying events to add to the payout. And I quote, In a nine-hole match, New Bern scored a six shots ahead of second-place D. H. Conley. Riley Casey was New Bern s top golfer with a 43. Caroline Bryant carded a 45 and Sara Ferebee scored a 46.
