3 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL Clubhouse News It s Febr uar y and that means Valentine s Day. This year Valentine s falls on a Friday, so we are going to have a late night dance for all. We are still doing the Valentine s Sweetheart Dinner for those who wish to have a nice romantic dinner with their significant other. Then starting at 9:00pm we will have DJ Chuck Kolb playing until 12:00am. Everyone make plans to come to the dinner and stay for the dance. Come to the dance even if you don t come to the dinner. We are hoping for a good fun night of dancing. We will also be having Mutual Wine Dinner on February 28, Chris Izzo will be back to pair some great wines with some great food. The three wine dinners we have held have sold out, so please make your reservations early. Also, I am currently working on getting the results of the survey back out to the membership as soon as possible. REMINDERS: Shirt tails shall be tucked in at times while playing golf. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray or trash can. Walkers please be aware of golfers at all times on the golf course. Golfers have the right-of-way at all times and getting hit by a golf ball can be extremely dangerous and painful. Walking on the golf course is done at the walker s risk. COST REDUCTION MEASURES We would like to encourage members to receive their monthly newsletter and statement electronically instead of by mail. The cost of sending a hard copy of the newsletter to a member is $1.94 per month. The cost of sending a hard copy of the statement is $0.89. This includes paper, toner, labels, envelopes, and postage. We currently have 295 members that receive the newsletter by mail and 410 members that receive their statement by mail. If 100 members chose to switch to the electronic version of both the newsletter and statement, we would save $3, per year. This is a cost that can be controlled by the members. To receive your electronic copy of the newsletter and/or monthly statement, you can call the Business Office at or sign in to our website at and click on the appropriate box at the bottom of the page. 4 Clubhouse News LES WE FORGET, BILL STREET! The year was 1987, and Fred Anders was our President. Fred was in the banking industry and insurance. His wife Sylvia was employed at our Club as a bookkeeper.! Mavis Price won her second Ladies Championship that year. Mavis was from down the county (Pamlico). Mavis was married to Leroy Price and had a daughter, Kathy. Mavis was also active in bowling and starred in basketball in high school.! David Woodruff took the Men s Championship. He was the son of Fred and Flo Woodruff. David was very active at the Club. He also possessed a nice golf swing, taking it back slowly and smoothly.! Leroy Price was the Senior s Champion, the start of long winning streak. The switch hitter, not baseball, which he also played well, but in golf. After joining the Club in the 60 s Leroy switched from left handed to right handed golf, after which his wins started accumulating. This was a true reflection of his hard work and commitment to golf. Like his wife Mavis, he was also an accomplished bowler, carrying one of the highest averages in the house. Hidden Number In the newsletter is a hidden number. If you find your number hidden in the newsletter, you will receive two dinner entrees of your choice this month, excluding any beverages, gratuity and sales tax. 7 Tennis News TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Happy New Year everyone! Well it has been a very challenging start to the New Year with all the up and down weather conditions. As I write this we are still in the low 30 s going up to the upper 50 s low 60 s. It makes for an interesting day every day, your courts are holding up well and we are staying on the repair process every hour on the hour. February is a very busy month here at the tennis center, we have the ladies league in full swing and I hope to be able to report to you next month that the ladies are doing great as they always do. If you get a chance stop by during the week to see them in action we have a very robust Ladies Tennis Association and it is only growing week by week. If you are interested in joining please contact Mrs. Bridget Cella, President of the L.T.A. Mrs. Cella does such a great job, we are lucky to have her. The tennis department is going through some changes so we ask all the members to be patient with our management staff, as well as your Board of Directors. Our management staff and your Board always has the best interest of the club and its families at heart and you can trust that they will make sure you have THE BEST amenities and services of any country club in Eastern North Carolina. In the mean time if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions we here in the tennis department love that type of interaction.! We strive every day to be inventive and thoughtful with all the amenities we offer here at NBGCC. Look for in the coming months newsletters, more pictures of your tennis playing membership and any and all events that we have here at NBGCC! Our tennis playing families and their children are so much fun and we just want everyone to enjoy the wonderful facility we love to call home. I will leave you this month with a statement that every, and all of us in the tennis department live by each day, our Mission Statement: The purpose of the New Bern Golf and Country Club is to provide a place where members and their guests enjoy fine dining and exceptional tennis amenities, creating treasured friendships and unforgettable memories USTA JR. SANCTIONED TOURNAMENT DATES NBG&CC will be hosting the 13 th Annual USTA junior tournaments again this year. These tournaments are great for competitive tennis for many of our juniors. If you are interested in your children participating in these events and would like to start preparing them please call the pro shop. 8 Tennis News Thank You Ladies Tennis Association (LTA) I would like to personally thank the ladies tennis association (LTA) for their support and commitment to not only tennis but the surrounding community. The LTA is responsible for raising several hundred dollars for the Journey of Hope Foundation (supporting cancer patients in Craven County), new furniture in the tennis pro shop, providing snacks for USTA sanctioned tournaments, and generating exposure to the tennis program. As well as getting the bathrooms upgraded at the tennis facility.the tennis program would not be what it is without the overwhelming support of the LTA. If you are new to the club or would like to learn more or even join this wonderful group of ladies please contact the tennis pro shop ( ). Winter Weather and Tennis Court Conditions Please know that it will be our priority and goal to maintain the tennis courts and their playability before and after freezing conditions. We take pride in knowing that the tennis courts at NBG&CC are open and available for play before any other clay court facility in the surrounding area. Communication will be extremely important during freezing weather therefore, if courts are unplayable you will see signs closing the tennis courts, you will receive s concerning court conditions, and the voice message for the tennis pro shop will offer detailed information. Thank you for your patience during inclement weather. New Club rule effective January 1, 2014: To play on a Club sponsored league tennis team, a non-member must reside outside the geographic boundaries of Craven and contiguous counties and pay a fee to be set at the discretion of the Board.! 9 Golf News UPCOMING EVENTS The MGA Annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 29 th starting at 6pm. LGA News Are you ready for some Superbowl Superball??? Sunday, February 2 nd Superbowl Sunday. Tee off at 10:00am with some food after play to enjoy some pre-game with. Don t forget entry into the tournament gets you a square on the Superbowl board and a chance to win $1, March 2 nd and warmer weather is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for the MGA Spring Scramble. If you are in need of some instruction whether it be short game, long game, or just getting the kids involved in golf, Alan and Holden will be scheduling three separate Clinics coming up in the next few months. A short game clinic is scheduled for Saturday February 15th, Junior Clinic (ages7-13) on Saturday March 15 th, and a long game clinic on Saturday April 19 th. Each clinic will last from 2:00 to 4:00PM. Please contact proshop for sign-up!!! STAR PERFORMER Michael Parrish is our lone star performer this past month. Mr. Parrish fired a career low 64 on December 28 th. This is six shots better than his previous low. He did it while playing with his father-in-law. That a boy! January Tournaments Weather kept us off the course for two weeks, January 7th and 14th. Ace of the Month was played on January 21st. Winner was Dana Crayton from the First Flight with a Net Score of 72.
