1 Bon Air Country Club March 18, 2016 Bon Air Country Club Phone: Message from the President Don Smith - President Welcome to my first newsletter as President of Bon Air. I d like to start out by thanking Fred Brehm and Rich Steines for the years of service as Board members whose terms ended this past January. I would also like to welcome Tyler Abel and Dennis Quinn to their first term as members of Bon Air s Board of Directors. Steve Hutchinson, while not new to the Board, is entering into his second term. The Board responsibilities this year are: Steve Hutchinson Vice President Jack Rowe Secretary Dan Gartrell - Treasurer Joe Herkalo Liaison to the Green and Grounds Committee Jack Stoneberg Liaison to the House Committee Andres Del Pino Liaison to the Membership Committee Tyler Abel Liaison to the Men s and Women s Golf Committees Dennis Quinn Liaison to the Social Committee Committees have always played an Mark Your Calendar import role at Bon Air and they are currently as strong as I can remember in my 18 years as a member. The House Committee made tremendous improvements to the ballroom in 2015 bringing us new carpeting, relieving us of the window treatments from the disco era (I think), and window tinting to control the heat from the summer sun. The Social Committee brought us the Easter Egg Hunt as well as the Friday Night Happy Hours which has been gaining in popularity. The Men s and Women s Golf Committees organize and oversee our tournaments during the season and the revenue collected through the golf coupons is used for scholarships, and improvements to the golf course. Be on the lookout for our new mobile app that the MGC has been kind enough to pay for. The Green and Grounds Committee works with Butch and his crew to insure that the course is in the best condition our budget allows. You will notice a few more trees missing. There is one still on 15 that I wish they would consider the next time. You will also notice the next time you stop by that the staff painted the Pro Shop and it looks great. The most important committee at this time is the Membership Committee. This committee recently reorganized and I am pleased to say that we have an All-Star cast now making plans to attract new members. While our committees have been strengthened over the past year, there is still a need on each of them for new members. If you have a little time to spare, and it doesn t take much time, please consider joining one of them and sharing your ideas on how to make Bon Air a better club. In finishing up, I would like to provide my contact information for anyone to reach out to me with concerns, questions, suggestions or anything else. djsgolf1@gmail.com Cell (717) St. Patty s Day Party 3/18 Green Aerification 3/21 & 3/22 MGC Opening Day 3-Man Scramble 4/2 DEMO Day 4/10 Ladies Opening Day 4/13 Ladies Spring Handicap 4/20 Ladies Wine & Cheese 4/24 Our Lady of Grace Golf Outing 4/29 YCAGA Interclub Qualifier 4/30 Mixed Couples 5/1 Friday Night Couples (1st Night) 5/6 MGC 2 Man Better Ball 5/7 MGC Double Trouble Scramble 5/21 Ladies Preakness Challenge 5/21

2 Page 2 BON AIR COUNTRY CLUB GM/ Golf Professional - Jeff Glatfelter From the Pro/GM 2016 at Bon Air is shaping up to be a great year. The calendar is full of great activities for golfers of all ages and skill levels. Spring is the time of year to start planning your schedule for the upcoming golf season. I encourage all of you to review the pocket calendar distributed by the MGC and save the dates of all of your favorite events. In this Newsletter you will find the details of many early season events that I am sure you will enjoy. I hope you will all take advantage of these opportunities and invite your friends to do the same. For the men, I urge you to get signed up early for the Wednesday Night League and the Summer Long Better Ball before space runs out. Spring is also full of golf activities for the ladies as well. Now is the time to get yourself signed up for the Ladies Wine and Cheese, Thursdays with Travis and the Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association. For the Couples it won t be long until Friday Night Couple Golf begins. If you are considering new equipment this season, I encourage you to take advantage of your professional staff by attending our Demo Day on April 10th or by scheduling a personal club fitting. This year we are once again featuring in our Pro Shop the best equipment in golf manufactured by Mizuno and Callaway. In addition to our featured lines, we will also be able to order Titleist, Taylor Made, Ping and other great equipment lines. As always we are committed to helping you get the most out of your game while offering you competitive pricing! This year we will once again be offering our Summer Instruction Series which will be available to male and female golfers of all ages. The series will combine an enjoyable social evening with an exceptional skill building opportunity. Each workshop will be geared toward a different aspect of the game. We hope you are available to take advantage of this series. From the Grounds Department Butch Howard Golf Course Superintendent The maintenance staff is currently making the transition from winter projects to spring golf course preparation. The greens came out of winter in fantastic shape this year with absolutely no winter damage. We are aerifying greens March 21 st and 22 nd to prepare them for the long golfing season ahead. Golf accessories are now being placed out on the course along with a return to one pin placement per green After the initial spring agronomic practices the staff will turn their attention to the leveling of #18 white tee and #6 upper tee. We are doing this project in house with as little disruption to play as necessary. We will not be enlarging or changing the tee in any other way. We are just going for a more level stance off the tee. The Irrigation system should be on line shortly if its use becomes necessary. The two notable winter projects among the many this winter are the improvement to the cart path on #12 and the Pro Shop makeover. We will also be trying a new product for improvement of the wear areas off the cart paths. We only have enough material for 2 or 3 paths. We will start on the #11 and #12 paths and if material allows #7 as well. It is hopeful that this will work as intended to stop erosion and wear from cart traffic. It is shaping up to be a great spring and hope to see out on the links soon!

3 Page 3 BON AIR COUNTRY CLUB From the Men s Golf Committee - Bobby Stiffler, Committee Chairman The active golf season begins April 1st. Players are responsible for posting all scores in the handicap system starting this date. #4 Tee Renovation planned for Fall 2016 The MGC has committed funds to build a forward tee and a middle tee on Hole #4 according to Architect Dan Slagle s plans. Slagle s plans, which include an entire renovation of the tee complexes at Bon Air, were purchased by the MGC in While there is no plan in place at this time to complete the entire renovation, the MGC is committed to applying surplus funds to keep the tee project moving forward as funds become available. The 4th hole, which now plays as a par 4 for men and a par 5 for ladies, will be shortened to a more reachable length for both the Green and white tees. After the project is complete, the hole will play as a par 4 for all golfers. Below are the planned yardages for the new teeing areas. Forward Tee yards Hybrid Set of Tees now in Play Every golfer dreams of hitting approach shots into the green that will actually hold and react the same way a Tour player s golf ball does. With the new Hybrid Tees provided here at Bon Air, golfer s who s tee shots average about 225 yards will be able to do just that. The new Hybrid Tee system incorporates the use of a combination of currently existing tee boxes to form a new, shorter course. At 6003 yards, the Hybrid tees will play at a yardage halfway between the White Tees and the Green Tees. This is just the beginning of a long range plan to develop a new 4 tee structure in the coming years. Next time you come out to enjoy a round of golf, please stop by the pro shop and pick up the hybrid tee scorecard. The card will guide you to the tee for each hole and what yardage you will be playing from. This course set up has been rated and sloped by the USGA and you will be able to post scores in the handicap system. Fewer lost balls and much more enjoyment hole by hole will increase the overall experience of Bon Air Country Club and give everyone the desire to play more golf! Middle Tee yards Back Tee yards Saturday, April 2nd - 9:OO AM SHOTGUN 2016 MGC Opening Day 3-Man Scramble Format: Three Player Scramble In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. Sign-up Today!

4 From the Ladies Golf Committee - Mary Lu Mixon, Committee Chairperson I think Spring is really right around the corner and the golf course is calling your name! The Women's Golf Committee would like to invite all women golfers of Bon Air to join us for our first event of the season on Sunday, April 24th. Mark your calendars NOW to avoid those last minute conflicts. This event is the Wine and Cheese Scramble; a nine hole event that is strictly for FUN...culminating with a complimentary glass of wine. What could be better than that? Well, now that you ask...the Preakness Challenge, scheduled for Saturday, May 14th, might just top that. This is an 18 hole event...but...every hole is a Par 3! Jeff and Travis go to extraordinary lengths to make this fun for all skill levels. We score with Win, Place and Show, awarding points (instead of score) of 1,3 & 5. We have lots more in store for the ladies this year, so plan to join the WGC this year! We have NO DUES...only fun! If you are interested in being on the committee, we meet the first Thursday of each month, April through Nov at 6PM in the Ladies 18th hole. We would love to have you join us. Bon Air Ladies The WGC would like to invite you to play in these fun weekend events! Mark your calendars! 5 \ From the Ladies Golf 18 Hole Golf Association - Lindy Sweeney, Committee Chairperson The reason the pro tells you to keep your head down is so you can't see him laughing. ~Phyllis Diller ON YOUR MARK, GET READY, GET SET GO!!! Judging from the initial feedback I m receiving, 2016 could be a banner year for Women s Golf at Bon Air Country Club! Our pros, Jeff and Travis, are planning another series of clinics formerly called Tuesdays with Travis but re-named Tuesdays with Travis on Thursdays. Due to the number of ladies participating, we require two pros to manage the size our groups and Jeff s Tuesday times are already maxed out with his other Club and Pro Shop responsibilities. I am also pleased to report that Travis recently finished reading Mitch Albom s book Tuesdays with Morrie (from which his clinic s name was derived.) The book is short and is NOT about golf but rather a bittersweet teacher/student relationship and life. It is a great read for those of you who have not read the book. Mary Lu Mixon and the BACC Women s Golf Committee have five special events on the 2016 calendar so look for her newsletter articles as well as s and flyers from our Pro Shop. And don t forget, our Association Spring Meeting is Wednesday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ballroom and our OPENING DAY is Wednesday, April 13 with light breakfast refreshments to precede a 9:00 a.m. tee time. I would encourage all lady golfers to join this association and play on whatever Wednesdays throughout the season you can. Watch for upcoming flyers from the Club with further details regarding the Spring Meeting, Opening Day, and golf events for ladies in general. THINK SPRING! A one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 will be applied only when the facts show that the player has caused the ball to move.
