1 FALL WINTER 2017 KIRKBRAE NEWSLETTER KIRKBRAE COUNTRY CLUB GOLF, DINING, & SOCIAL NEWS AND EVENTS TABLE OF CONTENTS LETTERS FROM KIRKBRAE 2-5 FALL AND WINTER EVENTS 6-13 HOST YOUR EVENT AT KIRKBRAE 14 MEMBER INFORMATION 15 PLATTER INFORMATION 16 DINING INFORMATION 17 WELCOME TO THE 2017 FALL AND WINTER SEASON! What a great year it has been here at Kirkbrae. This season we have welcomed many new family, individual and corporate members to the club. The Kirkbrae staff in all areas of the club takes great pride in servicing our growing membership. Our club continues to be busy with activity as we move past the height of the season and transition into the fall and winter months. We have worked hard to tailor our dining operations to be more modern and accessible to the membership. We have enjoyed great success with new dining options for Sundays including a casual bar menu offered during the football games and family style take out menus featuring some of our most famous classics such as the famous Kirkbrae Meatballs and Chicken Parmesan. Breakfast menus have been revamped to present a more streamlined and classic approach. Menus for lunch and dinner will be updated this month with seasonal additions. Our chefs focus on providing cuisine that is of the highest quality and consistency. DIRECTORY 18

2 LETTERS FROM KIRKBRAE LETTERS FROM KIRKBRAE As members, we enjoy the best activity programming there is to offer. There is always something for everyone and throughout the fall there is no shortage of activity. MR. ROBERT PIELECH, PRESIDENT Kirkbrae is vibrant and thriving. As members we enjoy the best that a private club has to offer. Our meticulous golf, clubhouse and pool facilities combined with top notch programs, services and amenities truly have Kirkbrae at the highest level of clubs throughout New England. Additionally, the club is fortunate to have a team of hardworking and dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to make the club the best it can be day in and day out. During the remainder of this year, we can experience some of the best golfing conditions. As you make your way around you will see that we have moved forward with the transformation of the eighth green and the rehab of the ninth green. Our golf course renovation plan approved by the members three years ago is moving along as planned and we couldn t ask for a better result. The club continues to be bustling with golf and social events. As members, we enjoy the best activity programming there is to offer. There is always something for everyone and throughout the fall there is no shortage of activity. Throughout the offseason, the club transcends into a hub of social and dining activity. I hope you take advantage of all the activity planned over the next few months and find the time to enjoy the dining room. It is the hope of the board that all members find enjoyment and ease of use with their membership to Kirkbrae. When coming to the club, we ask our members to be mindful of the general rules and regulations. Additionally, please communicate with your guests requirements for dress in the clubhouse and on the golf course. A few years back, the Board amended the dress code to include the wearing of jeans in the clubhouse. It is important to remember that collared shirts are still a requirement for men and boys and that shirts designed to be tucked in, are worn appropriately at all times. Also, please be sure not to park in unauthorized areas including fire lanes. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to ensure that all members have enjoyable experiences. kicks off with the Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 3; the members Christmas Party Vigil on Dec. 10 and the Soiree on Dec. 21. All these events are a great way to celebrate the holidays in different ways. Additionally, we are available to host small social or corporate dinners in the member dining room and our events facility is a great place to host a company party or family holiday reunion. At the bar, Ashly and Scott have worked hard to create a more focused approach to beverage. New beverage menu books include: a revamped wine list that provides a high quality selection of great wines; seasonal crafted cocktails and updated spirits and beer selections. Our approach has been to get back to the basic way of thinking that high quality and high value create the ultimate member dining experience. Our management team has worked toward providing a dining atmosphere that rivals many of the great restaurants in our region. The Kirkbrae events operation has been recognized again as the premier wedding and special events venue. We are proud of the feedback we continue to receive from our clients and guests of their experiences at Kirkbrae. The clubs facilities host a variety of special events throughout the year and we are so pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of each of those events. We appreciate the support of our members who utilize our event services and look forward to building new event relationships through our membership. As I mention above, the club has enjoyed a surge in membership over the past two years. The club has tailored our programs to welcome new members who join the club for a variety of reasons. It is always my pleasure to meet with prospective Kirkbrae members. It is a great time to be a member at Kirkbrae. In all areas your club continues to raise the standard and redefine what it means to be a strong, vibrant and modern day country club. Our facilities, services, programming, staff and membership are all second to none in our region and we always look forward to what the next stage of constant development will bring! It is a great time to be a member at Kirkbrae. In all areas your club continues to raise the standard and redefine what it means to be a strong, vibrant and modern day country club. On November 14, the Board will host the annual meeting. We hope you are able to attend and participate. TIMOTHY FLANAGAN, GENERAL MANAGER Over the next few months we have several special events scheduled. In this newsletter (and online at member central) you can find more detailed information regarding our prime rib nights, wine dinners and holiday events for Halloween, thanksgiving and Christmas. This year, we have added an adult Halloween party on Oct. 28 in addition to the family event on the 26th. We once again will be offering thanksgiving to-go with pickup on Wednesday, November 22 and our Family Style Thanksgiving on the 23. Our Christmas season MIKE BRADSHAW, PGA HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL As we turn another page on the 2017 calendar, it s a great time to reflect back on what we ve seen thus far in the golfing season..a late start to Spring but with a brand-new 13th hole. And what a hole it is!.record participation in many of our tournaments, including all of our Ryder Cup qualifiers, the not-so-new, but definitely improved, Men s Two-Day Member Guest, and all of our Club Championship Divisions.. A tremendous uptick across all facets of our Junior Golf programs, including PGA Junior League, SNAG at the Pool and the Junior Golf School. A record comeback for the Ryder Cup Team at Alpine to defend the Cup and keep the Cup here at the club for the fifth time in six years 2 FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK TO STAY UP TO DATE ON EVENTS FALL 2017 KIRKBRAE NEWSLETTER 3

3 LETTERS FROM KIRKBRAE LETTERS FROM KIRKBRAE.A record comeback for the Ryder Cup Team at Alpine to defend the Cup and keep the Cup here at the club for the fifth time in six years. for the club and I do want to be part of the welcoming committee. So to all our new members who have joined throughout the year, it is really great to have you aboard and hope you enjoy all that Kirkbrae has to offer. The renovation of #8 green complex is well under way and I believe the vast majority of you will love the changes.and now, just this week, we started year four of the golf course renovation plan with the reconstruction of the eighth and ninth green. Wow, quite a record for one season. While we all hear the rumor and innuendo surrounding other area clubs, the vibe here at Kirkbrae is the total opposite. It s our goal to constantly move forward and improve. I think the old saying goes, If you re not stepping forward, you re actually going backwards. But there s one common factor that drives this mentality and all of these (and many other) accomplishments---the support of the membership. None of these things would be possible without YOU the Member and your support. You should be proud of your club and all YOU do for it---the results are obvious to all and well-deserved Finally, now that Fall has begun, the season enters what I feel have always felt is the best time of year to play. Less heat and humidity coupled with fantastic course conditions provide the ideal scenario for golf---please make sure you take advantage of it. We have a few fun events left on the docket to give you a reason to play one more rounder hit one more shot because when Old Man Winter is knocking on your door, it will be too late!!! MARK A. RICHARD, CGCS GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT Fall has arrived and with it comes another major improvement to the golf course. The renovation of #8 green complex is well under way and I believe the vast majority of you will love the changes. Architect Mark Mungeum has really captured the feel for the golf course and our membership and I think we will enjoy more positive results as each subsequent year goes by. A last minute decision was made to also work on softening the 9th green while the work crews and architect are here and in that area. This green was built to a championship type standard which has proved way too difficult and unenjoyable to the membership. The plan entails the removal of the back 2/3rds of the green, re-grade just that portion of the green, and replace the sod. I am excited about this particular improvement and I m hoping that the membership will enjoy playing it once it is completed. Of course, two greens being done at once means double the anxiety for the Golf Course Superintendent. Fortunately, I happen to have the best staff a Superintendent could ask for. Knowing that will help me sleep a little better until all is completed. Usually doing a fall newsletter article does not entail welcoming new members. That is rather, a tradition of spring. I have recently learned that we have taken on quite a few new memberships during this past summer season. This is great news 4 FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK TO STAY UP TO DATE ON EVENTS So.While on the subject of what Kirkbrae has to offer.. I recently hosted a meeting of the Rhode Island Golf Course Superintendents Association. The day included meeting with lunch, golf, and dinner/networking. I can tell you, I have never been prouder of any club that I have worked at than I was on that day. The amount of work and effort that goes into these affairs can sometimes be overlooked, even by does that participate in its preparation in other departments (like yours truly). Obviously I am concentrating on the golf course and what needs doing to accommodate a function. The front end stuff I don t give much of a thought to. The way everything was handled, from food menus and special request, meeting needs, the Pro Shop staff handling bags, changes in tee assignments, scoring etc. From start to finish everything was superb. There was not an individual of my association who did not comment on the day and their total enjoyment of the experience. So to all my colleagues here at Kirkbrae, I would just like to say thanks for making this Superintendent so proud of being a part of this club. It is why we have become part of the conversation in being one of the top clubs in the region. MILLIE OZIEMBLEWSKI PRESIDENT KIRKBRAE WOMAN S GOLF ASSOCIATION Fall is a wonderful season for golf so continue to play. We had a very successful season of the Thursday tournaments as well as our four memberguest events. We are so pleased with this year s participation. The ladies programs are growing and we welcomed many new members to our roster this year! I would like to offer thanks for a great season to our Tournament Chairs, Donna Boulis and Terry Beck, PGA Professional Mike Bradshaw and his staff and our Manager, Tim Flanagan and his staff. Special thanks to Mark Richard and his staff for the great condition of our golf course. As always, special thanks to our locker room attendant Maria Fernandez for taking such good care of us all season long. Congratulations to Elaine Matook, our 2017 Women s Club Champion and to all who participated in our Club Championship Sunday. It was a fun event. Fall brought our last big event of the year, The Kirkbrae Cup which Michelle Scoggins took home the trophy. This was followed by the annual ABCD and annual meeting to close out the year. Thank you to all who participated and attended. These events capped off a great season of competition and camaraderie. I would like to thank my KWGA Board for all of their efforts and support. Congratulations to Elaine Matook, our 2017 Women s Club Champion and to all who participated in our Club Championship Sunday. It was a fun event. FALL 2017 KIRKBRAE NEWSLETTER 5
