5 Board of Directors Elections for The Board of Directors consists of both executive positions and non-executive positions, called members at large. Every year, some of the Board of Directors terms expire, and current members either choose to run for re-election or opt out. Unexpected openings occur as well. The Executive Board of Directors consists of: President, Dressage Vice President, Eventing Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. This year there are four Executive Board of Directors positions up for election: President, Dressage Vice President, Eventing Vice President and Secretary. As well as discussing and voting on business, members at large usually participate on one or more committees (i.e., dressage, combined training, education, grants, etc.). All positions serve for a two-year term, beginning January 1, 2019 and ending December 31, We are always looking for motivated and interested members to join the board. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please contact one of the current board members. Originally an event rider, dressage was initially just an afterthought. As she and her horse progressed, it became clear that to win at eventing, you had to know and practice dressage. Since then, she has been pursuing dressage as an avocation. She is currently showing at the Intermediare level. She has earned her Bronze and Silver Medals in Dressage. Molly has taken her love of dressage and begun to give back to the sport through her positions on the board. She has served as chair of the Membership Committee and then VP of Dressage, and currently as President. Through promotion and support, she wants to build our equine community to honor the horse and rider. Joan Pecora: Board of Directors Member at Large Joan is a USDF L Graduate, Gold Medal rider and trainer. The goal of Joan s instruction is to clarify the basics of dressage for both horse and rider in any equestrian discipline. Joan believes that dressage is a form of training from which all riders and horses can benefit, regardless of breed or riding style. Eventers, for example, can utilize dressage to perfect steering, brakes, manners and control. Those who ride hunters must be able to effect flying lead changes at the canter during a change of direction. Dressage can also help the rider learn to adjust their horse s strides to a fence or adjust to conditions. Joan is currently a horse owner, a horse professional, and a dressage enthusiast. 18 Riding with Aurthur Kottas By Andi Patzwwald, Educational Grant Recipient Photograph provided by the author Recently, I had the privilege of learning from dressage classical master Arthur Kottas for three days at Tempel Farms, on Amy Grahn s fabulous horse, Hudson 18. This was made possible through the Educational Grant program. The big reminder and lesson for me during this great clinic was that we should always remember, less is more when we are riding. We should be making our aids smaller and smaller and lighter and lighter as we go up the levels, until the horse is so tuned in to our aids that we become one. Isn t that what Dressage is all about? We should never forget that. For the warm up, Mr. Kottas stressed the importance of stretching Hudson over his back and really allowing him to come through. We did a lot of serpentines to have him bend around my inside leg into my outside rein and encourage him to come over his back. On the first day, Mr. Kottas asked what I would like to work on with Hudson throughout the clinic, and I responded with pirouettes, changes, and piaffe/passage transitions, both in and out. We started with work on our canter pirouettes and flying changes, and I loved his exercises for both of these movements. Hudson and I have struggled a bit with our pirouettes, as sometimes I feel he wants to take over and I feel he s not listening to my aids and just doing his own thing. However, I found it interesting that Mr. Kottas had me start with an exercise that proved I was doing too much in my aids while riding the pirouettes, and actually getting in Hudson s way. Mr. Kottas had me do full walk pirouettes in each direction before we even started thinking about canter pirouettes. This gets the horse on the aides and thinking about a pirouette before even starting at canter. After our walk pirouettes, he had me pick up the canter and we went to the next exercise, proceeding down the long side in a nice collected canter. Kottas would call out the letter where he wanted me to do a 10-meter circle down to an 8-meter circle and then a 6-meter circle, all with haunches in. I have to tell you, this was a hard exercise for the two of us. Hudson was ready to do his pirouette right away, and here I was telling him, No, it s not time yet, we have a 10 and an 8-meter circle to do first. We were really tested by this exercise. As we were working on it, Mr. Kottas said to stop trying so hard. He said that every time he sees a horse slow down in the canter, he knows that the rider is over half halting. I found this fascinating, as I felt I was barely squeezing the outside rein in a sponging half halt, but Mr. Kottas went on to say that he only wanted me to vibrate the outside rein and nothing more. The transformation was incredible, Hudson responded beautifully, and our circles became fluid and smooth, with a good jumping canter into a nice 6-meter circle with haunches in and without him stopping his activity. As I said above about overriding, it was astounding to me that my overriding was a sponge-like half halt, and by taking that down to vibrating the outside rein, the horse responded in such a way that overwhelmed me! me work on developing the passage out of a nice forward collected trot, so that Hudson had a lot of energy and impulsion swinging into the passage from the normal trot. Then he had me transition back from passage to a very forward trot to make sure he was in front of the leg. After the passage was really nice and forward and in front of the leg, he had me work on slowing the passage in order to work on the transition into piaffe. He didn t want me to rush him into piaffe, and instead of getting a really hectic piaffe with no rhythm, Hudson gave me a really nice transition into a super, swinging piaffe, very under and through. Mr. Kottas had me work on half halting with my fingers to keep Hudson in place in the piaffe, while keeping the forward idea so he didn t lose energy and activity in the piaffe. For the transition back into passage, Mr. Kottas had me focus first on having Hudson go straight out of the piaffe into a forward trot again. After Hudson was responding well in front of my leg from the piaffe back to a normal, active trot, Mr. Kottas then had me ask with just a small half halt to go back into passage, and because Hudson was so ready to be forward from the previous work in forward trot, he went with nice impulsion into a fluid passage. With some practice and work with these tips and exercises, Hudson has become so much more honest, forward and through in his piaffe and passage work. It s truly all about keeping that forward impulsion throughout the highest degree of collected work. I am truly grateful for having this opportunity to ride with a classical master such as Mr. Kottas. The experience has added to both my and Hudson s educations, creating a unified partnership. For flying changes, Mr. Kottas wanted the changes ridden with an open inside leg so as not to block the inside hind from jumping through. This took some practice on my part, because I generally keep my inside leg on and not completely open as he wanted. It did make a difference in the flying changes, however, and since then I ve experimented with some other horses at home and it s made a big difference in working on the same idea with them. Some of the best work over the three days with Hudson was on piaffe and passage. I really wanted help with the transitions between piaffe and passage, specifically from piaffe into passage. First, Mr. Kottas had October 2018 Page 18

28 Grant Program The Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned. As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. members can qualify every year. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers farther than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit). Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting. One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring. The amount funded by per clinic is $200 $400, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less, and will be voted on by the board. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year. In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted will not be sent out and will be reallocated back. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant. All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received. October 2018 Page 28
