While riding she explained what she was doing, looking for and getting from the horse. Later she took questions from the audience. We had a good size crowd with many new faces. 2 S H O W N E W S Show season has started with many of our members attending both local and recognized shows. If you have show news please send it to us so we can share your adventures! The Winds Reach Horse Trials & Dressage Schooling Show was held on Sunday, May 28, In Horse Trials EIDEA members Sarah Sebetka took first place at Novice and Jasmine Hobart took third. In Intro Level Belinda Jones took first place and Susan Brigham took fourth. Way to ride! In an effort to support schooling shows EIDEA donated two tote bags filled with goodies awarded to a division winner in the Horse Trials and in the Dressage Schooling Show. EIDEA also awarded a stock pin, created and donated by Jan Vlasak to an EIDEA member who competed. The EIDEA Beginner Novice Award went to Alice Dobbs. The EIDEA First Level Dressage Award went to Jean Rude. The EIDEA Member Award went to Kathy Reed. Congratulations to all! And many thanks to the volunteers that put on the show. It will be especially beautiful since I always wear black & white as my horse Tommy is black! Thank-you Kathy Reed In other shows Megan Ward and Autopilot went to Spring Party Dressage in Winona, MN and received first place for their First Level Freestyle and Second Level test. Members Amanda Johnson, Kate Kostenbader, Nicole Durbin and Megan Ward went to Bara Trac I. Kate received a Championship for Training Level Open with her horse Lexi. Megan Ward and Autopilot took third place in the Freestyle competition. Their plan is to upgrade it to a Second Level Freestyle for competition later this summer. She also received her qualifying scores for Regionals at Second Level and a USDF Dover Medal. Amanda Johnson took two horses and groom Hannah Ferguson to Lamplight over the Memorial weekend. She came back with lots of ribbons for both Barrie Anderson s horse Pip and Barb Putnam s horse Faeden. Congratulations to all! E V E N T I N G The U.S. Eventing Association is pleased to announce that Lamplight Equestrian Center will host the American Eventing Championships. Lamplight, which is located in Wayne, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, is co-owned by Tom Moxley and Stephen Cooper, and is the site of more than 20 equestrian competitions each year including two horse trials, seven regional dressage shows, and six AA rated hunter/ jumper shows with grand prix, including Lamplight s two-week Equifest which hosts upward of 1000 horses each week. The AEC is expected to take place in September of each year. The horses will be stabled at Lamplight, and dressage and show jumping will also take place at the facility. The cross-country phase will be run across the street at the Du Page County Forest Preserve s Pratt Wayne Woods Equestrian Area, which currently has six levels of cross-country courses, beginner novice through advanced, on over 600 acres. Katie Lindsay, who currently organizes the Maui Jim Horse Trials which also takes place at Lamplight and the Pratt Wayne Woods, has been named organizer of the AEC. She has been an organizer for 25 years starting with the American Continental Young Riders Three-Day Event Championships in She introduced intermediate level eventing to Area IV in 1982, and through the generous sponsorship of the Centel Corporation and later Sprint, advanced eventing was added a decade later. Her lifetime love of the sport and vast experience as both an organizer and a licensed official, plus the expert team of volunteers she has developed over the years, will no doubt ensure the continued success of this destination event. I have some huge shoes to fill, Lindsay said. The Carolina Horse Park crew gave life to this competition, and I just hope I can live up to their standard of excellence. I m excited by the challenge and look forward both to introducing Midwestern eventing to the rest of the country, and to working with the great USEA staff in Leesburg. The American Eventing Championships first ran in 2004 at the current host site, the Carolina Horse Park, in Raeford, North Carolina. The event will run there again this year, September We owe them so much for helping us make the inaugural AEC series such a destination event, said USEA President, Kyra Stuart. We went into this project with the plan to move the event to a new host site every three years, and as much as we will miss the Carolina Horse Park, we feel it is important that we follow through on that goal. 3 L E T T E R F R O M R E G I O N 4 D I R E C T O R, L I N D A L A N D E R S Our meeting on April 1, 2006 had about 30 people attending. We had 9 GMOs represented. Our minutes were 8 pages long. So I will be sending information about the committees that were formed and decisions that were made in increments. All of the minutes will be at the December meeting in Kansas City and if anyone wants a copy I could mail them a copy. Our volunteer chairman will be gathering names of people that want to volunteer at the symposium and convention. That information is given in a separate place. Sarah Patrick will be working on hospitality before the convention to encourage people to put this event on their agenda. We also formed a Regional Horse Show Committee and a committee that will be working on what we will sell at the convention in our booth. I will be sending out follow up information as the year progresses. It was a very productive meeting and one I am sure that our new regional director will want to continue. So everyone plan on a regional meeting in 2007 and plan to come. I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony in Kentucky for our new building. It is a beautiful building. There was a large crowd on hand and we had our first board meeting there as well. I hope everyone will get to visit USDF sometime when they go to Lexington for the Pony Club rally, the Rolex, a dressage event or the WEG in You will understand how impressive this complex of buildings are when you visit. The horse park itself is wonderful to visit. During the Rolex this year, many people visited our Hall of Fame and our store. Our visibility to the horse world is now improved. OUR BIRTHPLACE OF USDF, REGION IV BRICK IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE FRONT DOOR! I made a pledge to USDF for this brick. I would like for the region to help. We have made about $ contribution so far. If you or your GMO want to contribute to that brick, send your contributions to USDF and be sure to state that this will go to the Region 4 Brick fund. Please then send me confirmation by or mail what you have done. I am hoping that we can get individuals to contribute by publishing this in newsletters and talking about it at your individual meetings. If you want me to match your contributions I will. Linda Landers, Regional Director of Region 4 R E G I O N A L C H A M P I O N S H I P R E P O R T At the board meeting in Lexington, Kentucky, it was voted to have regional representation on the Regional Championship Council. Joyce Hardesty will be on the council and will be the chairman of our own regional committee. This long range committee was formed to discuss future sites for Regional Championships and also to consider other developments for our championships in the future. The members are Beth Wood, Gerri Muldrow, Miki Christophersen, and Joann Messersmith. C O N V E N T I O N V O L U N T E E R C O O R D I N A T O R At our Regional Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, April 1, 2006 it was decided that all volunteers should send their information to one coordinator. She will keep the information and work with the USDF office when it is time to assign positions. Volunteers will be assigned jobs and tasks starting the Monday before the convention officially starts. If a volunteer gives more than a few hours, there may be some compensation in convention expenses. Please send your name, telephone and address and cell phone number for the time before the convention and days you will be available to Janet Blauvelt, jblauvelt@summersblauvelt.com. The scheduling will be taking place in October and you will be notified then. The convention itself is November 29 until December 3 including the symposium U S D F C O N V E N T I O N In 2006 the USDF convention and symposium will be held in Kansas City, Kansas. Region 4 will be the host. The convention starts on Tuesday, November 28th and ends on Friday. The Symposium will start Friday evening on December 1st with a lecture. Saturday and Sunday the symposium will be riding and training demonstrations with two-time Olympian and World Champion equestrian, Ingrid Klimke of Warendorf, Germany to the Midwest as a clinician. A popular competitor among world-class eventers, Klimke also ranks among top international dressage riders. As a nationally certified riding instructor and daughter of the late six-time Olympic gold medalist, Dr. Reiner Klimke, Ingrid Klimke has starred in numerous German, European and World Championships. Last year she captured individual bronze at the European Championships in Blenheim, Great Britain and placed second at the 2006 Badminton Horse Trials in Great Britain. Training with some of the world s best equestrians since 1999, Klimke placed fourth overall on Sleep Late in the 2000 Sydney Olympics and, again, in 2004 with a sixth place overall in cross country and eighth place in dressage at the Athens Olympics. Klimke s topic for the USDF symposium is equine fitness. She will focus on the importance of cavalletti exercises as detailed in her book, Cavalletti: The Schooling of Horse and Rider Over Ground Poles. It is the variety, dressage, jumping, hacking, that builds up different muscles in the horse, making him strong, she explains. Classical training is always multi-faceted, and fitness is the one result.
