1 Vyrnwy Valley Riding Club Newsletter 2017 Sept 2017 inclusive Summer dressage league gets under way The Summer dressage league got successfully underway on 27th April at Rhôs, Sarnau. Despite the promise of a warm spring evening, there was a nip in the wind so, supplies of Pimm s and hot chocolate were bought to keep us all cheery from Intro A to Novice 28. Carol, our judge for the evening, had Anne's triple chocolate biscuits to keep her sweet and she was not disappointed as our riders and their horses paced confidently around the arena, showing off not only their skill and accuracy, but also our club's diversity. Stout, native bred, to highly strung, exotic horses, Vyrnwy Valley is home to all! Winners on the night and topping our leader board are: Jacky, Vicki, Anne and Sally, Well done! Big thanks to our helpers on the night: Julie, Wendy, Jacky, Anne and Sally. Looking forward to seeing you all at our next one, get those dates in your diaries! 2 Winter dressage league We all really enjoyed the Winter dressage league, there were not as many riders there as in our summer competitions, but the atmosphere was just as jolly. A huge Thank You is due to the members who organised our competitions. Firstly Elspeth Carr at OEC and then Vicki Luxmoore and Ali Harper at Rhôs. We would also like to thank all the members who helped run the events by doing the necessary jobs of writing for the judge, scoring, stewarding and calling tests, we would not be able to run competitions without you all. 3 WHAT S ON Riding Club Camp 2016 at Berriewood 14th, 15th & 16th July Includes 1 clinic on Friday (extra cost) and a Friday evening quiz. 2 clinics on Saturday plus a Topspec rep will be visiting with weight bridge and goody bags. There will also be a Saturday evening demo. 2 clinics on Sunday The instructors will include: Nicky Shipp, Janet Green, Sally Poppe, Ticky Fletcher & Elspeth Carr Tea/coffee/squash will be available and we will also arrange food on both evenings (Cost not included) There is a camping/parking area and we have full use of the club room with kettle, fridge & showers The cost of this will be 115 (for the weekend Fri eve - Sun) or 55 (for the day Sat or Sun) stable with straw or small paddock for Friday and Saturday night (there is no reduction if a horse stays only one night) There are still a few spaces left, please contact Justine James justine.james@bt.com Show Jumping May/ 2017 The next show jumping area competition will be at Caerwys (North Wales) on July 9 th Entries need to be in by 13th. Anyone interested in being in competing, in either the Jump & Style teams (2 x 75cm & 2 x 85cm), Novice (80cm), Intermediate (95cm) and Open (110cm) please let me know and I will send you an application form. The rule book states that: Each horse must have a valid vaccination certificate, which undeniably relates to that horse, completed, signed and stamped on each line by a veterinary surgeon, who is not the owner of the animal. The certificate must state that each horse has received two injections for primary vaccination against equine influenza given no less than 21 days and no more than 92 days apart. Only the first two injections need to have been given before the horse can compete. In addition, a first booster injection must be given no less than 150 days and no more than 215 days after the second injection of the primary vaccination. Subsequently, booster injections must be given at intervals of not more than one year apart, commencing after the first booster injection. None of these injections must be given within the preceding 7 days, including the day of competition or entry into the competition stables. There is a flu vaccination checker on our website 6

7 Combined Training Report by Patsy Pyke REPORTS/NEWS We had two teams at the Area Combined Training at Tushingham on April 17 th : Unstables consisting of Siân Bates and Heather Jones in the 75cm, and Ali Harper (replacing Helen Hathaway with only two days notice as poor Del had a foot abscess) and Justine James in the 85cm The Lightweights were Paula Jeffreson in the 75cm and Izzy Roberts and Cassie jumping the 85cm. This team only had three riders due to my own Splodgers being spun for having an injection two days too early. Luckily I had scanned and sent a copy of his passport so I didn t have to get him out of bed early. In future I will scan and send all passports as this was quite a shock (and disappointment) as my vet had said it was fine. It just goes to show that we should double check. Helen Hathaway and Gaynor Williams kindly came along in the (wet) morning and helped on dressage ring 2 which was a great help as it freed me up to help some of the other riders warm up for the jumping. Sharon James was also a superb support. Thank you all! Both teams did reasonable dressage tests, despite a lot of noise in the outside arena and people walking backwards and forwards along the indoor. Ali Harper came a brilliant 5 th overall with her super boy Jack with a total score of 36.1 and a clear round. In the other section, Justine came 10 th with a total score of 34.4 with 2 time penalties, as did Paula in her section (35.5) and a clear round. Izzy came 11 th with a score of 34.5 with a clear round, Siân came 16 th with a clear round (score 38.8) and Cassie came 19 th with a total score Pity that she forgot the last fence, but we all have done it sometime!). Heather also came 19 th in her section with 59.5 with Flicka jumping superbly. The total individual scores ranged from 28.4 to 80.2 with several eliminations and retirements as the course did prove quite tricky for some. In the future, we plan to do a team course walk and I will also double check with all riders before handing in the declaration sheets as I had inadvertently misnamed the horse Ali was riding. 7

8 Annual AGM and Prize giving The evening started with members raising their glasses to members of committee and official helpers who have done a huge amount of work with organising clinics and competitions and training for our members. Special rosettes were awarded to members who have been extremely helpful during the year and have helped over and above their role in Riding Club., they all have given up so much of their time to run activities for others to enjoy and we really appreciate what they do. Jessica Jones who has helped at every one of Cassie s show jumping competitions throughout the summer. Jess is not a member but her mother Heather is. Cassie Woods who organised six very successful show jumping competitions at and ended the season with a hugely popular open team show jumping competition. Patsy Pyke who always offers to help whenever and wherever there is a need as well as running lots of clinics and training sessions. Julie Phillips who does not take part in Riding Club activities these days but always offers her help with scoring at our Summer League Dressage competitions. who also offers her help whenever and wherever needed. Justine James for organising another fantastic camp ably assisted by Sally and Emily. Emily Jones for helping to organise camp with Justine and Sally.
