1 BEDLINGTON & BLYTH DISTRICT RIDING CLUB NEWSLETTER JULY 2014 SUMMER SHOW First and foremost the Club would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that contributed to yet another successful Summer Show at Lane Farm Equestrian. These include our main sponsors Robson & Prescott Veterinary Practice, our other sponsors Hobby Horse Equestrian, The Horse Resource, Jack Thomas Watson, Barnacre B & B, Equine Opti-touch, D Tweddle Building Contractors, Horse Feeds n Needs, Firepoint Services Ltd, L C & P Horse transport, Black Horse Shop, Miss S Tweedy, Lane Farm Equestrian, MPG Photography and Kendalls Autos. A huge thanks must also go the Judges, stewards, and helpers on the day who selflessly gave up their time and without whom this event would not be possible. Many thanks to Denise Straughan for the use of Lane Farm facilities, to Bev & John for providing the catering, Jill & David for providing the hospitality tent and to Sheila and Vera for making best use of it!! Last but not least to all of the competitors who supported the show by bringing along their lovely horses and ponies to show, we hope you enjoyed your day. The only niggle on the day was that some of the members who had been allocated tasks failed to show or inform a Committee member that they could not make it. Please bear in mind that any event takes a lot of organising and last minute changes such as a No show impact s heavily on other volunteers. The show was very successful and made a profit after all expenses had been deducted. If you have any feedback or suggestions for next year s show then please let us know. Some last minute tack cleaning Some of the fabulous rosettes, sashes and trophies on offer Layla and her pony Iggle Piggle at the show winning their first ever rosette 1 BBDRC NEWSLETTER JULY 2014

3 POINTS TROPHY Members that took part in the recent Le Trec and Showing phase of the point s trophy competition enjoyed this event however entries were disappointing, and unless there is more uptake for these events, then there will have to be a re-think for next year. Thank you to the judges and organisers of both of these events. The point s trophy offers members the opportunity to take part in a range of different types of competition all of which are optional, but in a more relaxed environment. The different class levels means that s It s perfect for those members who may want to try out some of these activities for the first time with their horse or pony and also for those more seasoned campaigners there really is something for everyone. It s not too late to take part in this year s competition with several events still to come and there are some lovely rosettes and trophies up for grabs. If anyone would like to find out more about the points trophy and how it works then full details can be found on the club web site or contact Jill Thomson at sillyjc2004@hotmail.com or on The next event is the Dressage and Show jumping on the 27 th July at Lane Farm and this will double as the dressage event for the point s trophy. IN THE PIPELINE /DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Course building further details to be announced Dog Show Provisional date is Friday 15 th of August but at time of writing this was to be confirmed. Junior member Chloe Snowdon willing her pony Velvet to stay put in the Le Trec competition. Team Show Jumping 30 th November with further details nearer the time. SUMMER CAMP (SENIOR & JUNIOR) Just a reminder to all those members that have booked a place on either camp that attendance is essential at the meeting on Thursday 10 th July at Bomasund Club (Stakeford) as full details of the weekend will be given and final payments for the camp will have to be made on the night. If you are still thinking of going and haven t yet booked a place then spaces are still available and you should contact Heather Harrison as soon as possible prior to the meeting so that payment can be made on the night which is the final deadline for both camps. All persons attending camp have to bring a copy of their Horse/Pony insurance policy along to the meeting on the 10 th of July for Heather. A Facebook group Page has been set up for those attending so that members can communicate with each other and perhaps help each other out with arrangement s for either themselves or their horse. 3 BBDRC NEWSLETTER JULY 2014
4 NEWSLETTER CONTRIBUTIONS It would be great if members could contribute their own stories, ideas and experiences to the Clubs monthly newsletter and we would value your input to create new sections on : Members profile (Juniors and Seniors) Where we would welcome any stories you would like to share about yourself and your horse. This might include any recent activities you have been doing, any obstacles or fears you have overcome or just to tell us about why you love your horse and what they mean to you. This is also a great way for existing and new members to find out more about their club companions and perhaps put faces to the name. Please send any photos and stories for inclusion in the newsletter to halcyonmaben@yahoo.co.uk Horse s health feature this may be topical depending on the time of year or perhaps some members would like to raise a query on something that other members can help them with. Blast from the Past BBDRC is 38 years young and there must be a plethora of old photographs, articles and memories that some members would like to share to give us newbies an insight into the past history of the club. We have kick started this feature in this month s newsletter. The photos or information can be from any year in the clubs history up until recent times. What s on equestrian wise both locally and further afield, and again if any members would like to promote other riding activities or competitions then please get in touch and we will do our best to include them. We would love your feedback on any of the above proposed additions to your newsletter or if you have anything else that you would like to see included, please let us know. A BLAST FROM THE PAST - BBDRC CLUB HISTORY The club was started on the 26 th April 1976 with five founder members and was originally called the Kitty Brewster Riding Club. The first meeting was held at the Kitty Brewster Pub in Blyth with 13 senior and 17 Junior members. In September of that year Flos Hodgkinson the Area 2 Secretary at the time gave the club BHS Riding club status and about 14 of the members sat a riding test to affiliate the club. The first ever club competition was clear round jumping with the grand prize of 1.00 which was won by Wendy Harrison (your club chairwoman) riding Dusk. Later on that year a gymkhana for the point s trophy resulted in a tie for first place between A Colley riding Royal and Billy Moran riding Kim. The same Billy Moran is still in winning form today with a qualifying win at last month s Royal Highland Show for the Cuddy Supreme title at this year s Horse of the Year Show. Wendy would equally still be happy to win a 1!! Membership continued to flourish and in 1979 two junior teams from the club won their sections in the regional qualifiers for the national BHS Championships at Stoneleigh. The dressage team were Karen Scott, Sara Bell, Gillian Easton and Karen Lough. The Prix Caprilli team a test of the rider ability were Sandra Morton, Wendy Harrison and Claire Michaelson. 4 BBDRC NEWSLETTER JULY 2014
5 The Prix Caprilli Team The dressage team were beaten at the finals by just five point s for the National title which was no mean feat as BBDRC were a small club in comparison to the others competing there.
