Vyrnwy Valley Riding Club Newsletter February 2018 May 2018 inclusive VVRC Raise funds for Brooke at Wynnstay Farmers Open Day Wynnstay Farmers in Oswestry offered VVRC a stall at their Open Day in October and they suggested that we raised money for a charity of our choice. Committee chose to support Brooke which provides veterinary treatment to hard working horses, donkeys and mules in the poorest parts of the world and we decided to organise a tombola. We were delighted with the response from our members when asked for donations and scores of items arrived for our stall. The top prize was a body massage with one of our members, Vicki Luxmoore who is a Sports Massage Therapist. Riding Club operated a rota of two hour shifts with two members on each session. It worked wonderfully well with lots of members popping in to support us and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day. The good news is that we raised for Brooke. Thank you to everyone who gave gifts for the tombola and supported us and of course a huge thank you is due to our shift workers. Brooke sent me banners and leaflets to hand out and a box of Brooke pens to sell. I still have some of these pens left and hopefully will be able to sell them all at events during the spring and summer. So if you see me with a bag of pens do please come and buy one. Thank you, Anne 1

Area 20 Dressage Report Four intrepid members set off for Somerford on a bitterly cold but bright day on November 12th to compete in the area winter novice competition. The team of Nicky Crooks, Janet Warner, Gina Williams, and Christine Hughes braved the cold conditions to represent VVRC. All did very well with the team coming a creditable 5th overall. Gina, at her 1st competition representing VVRC came 10th, Christine 8th, and Janet came 1st. Janet is now off to the championships at Bury Farm on 14th April Good luck, Janet! We had two teams competing at the intermediate area qualifiers. The original date at the end of October had to be can- Gina Williams celled due to Storm Brian hitting the UK. The new date was rearranged for 2nd and 3rd December at Tushingham. After a few changes of riders, and some last-minute stand ins, we still manged to send two teams of four. Neither team managed to get into the rosettes but very well done to all who took part. The teams were: VVRC Diamonds Irene Gill (10th), Janet Warner, Izzy Roberts, and Elspeth Carr, and the VVRC Emeralds Nicky Crooks, Vicky Poole, Pete Stephens, and Myfi Powell. Elspeth also entered the individual medium class where Matt the hunter/dressage diva strutted his stuff to come 6th. A very well done to all of you and thank you to those who stepped in to take the place of those who could not make the new date. The summer dressage qualifier is on July 29th, so I will be putting a call out for members to enter this in the spring. Sally Nicky Crooks Janet Warner 2

CHRISTMAS CRACKER SHOW January 7th, 2018 The cold conditions stopped play on the original date between Christmas and New Year, but we managed to hold the Christmas Crackers show on the 7th January at Rhôs. Again, it was a cold day but at least the sun was out! Great fun was had by all. We started with a fancy-dress parade Ali and Kat had sensibly opted for large warm handmade noses -a site to behold but everyone wished they had them by the end. Then we did some fun games including eat the dry cracker, find the sweet in the icing sugar (no hands allowed), polo bending relay race, mug race, and sock in the bucket. This was followed by fastest walk and trot jumping, run and ride and finally a speed pairs competition. All the horses loved it- Jack thought it was so much fun he bucked back down the arena every time, Trilby at 28 forgot his brakes and Roland got over his initial nerves to brave all the fun and games. Kat and Ali came joint first for their fancy dress -well they were identical! The teams (Kat, Ali, and Helen vs Meg, Paula, and Jane ended up on equal points so everyone was happy. The morning was finished off with hot mulled wine, mince pies and stollen. Well it was still nearly Christmas!! Many thanks to all who came and especially to Pete Stephens for helping me set things out, hold horses and lug show jumps. Sally 3

Area Winter Novice Show jumping at Southview. November 5th 2017 Two teams went to this Area competition with the 'A' team comprising of Hollie Hindley, Meg Higginson, Ali Harper and Gina Williams who went really well in the first round finishing on a '0' score; but not so good in the 2nd round & finished on a score of 24 so just out of rosettes coming 7th. Unfortunately due to last minute lameness the 'B' team was down to three: Paula Jeffreson, Lauren Lawley and Siân Bates who all got around in a nice style but unfortunately were not in the running as one of the horses took a dislike to the double. Everybody was organised on the day and thanks to Debbie Pennington who did half a day's help on car parking duties. I am now looking for keen riders for the Intermediate show jumping at Northop on March 18th and the combined training competition (date to be decided). 5 VVRC social evenings Our last proper social evening of 2017 was Ten Pin Bowling at The Venue, Park Hall way back in November. About 12 of us got together to enjoy an evening of food, chatter and of course bowling!! This was a bit different to any of the other socials we had previously organised and we are so glad it proved to be a popular choice. A repeat evening has been requested so we will try to fit it in to 2018 somewhere!! For 2018 we plan to continue with our regular social evenings from May time onwards. Until then we have a couple of special socials planned. As I m sure you ve all seen by now we are running a course of six Rider Core Strength and Fitness classes with the lovely Emily Pryce throughout February and March and we have 24 people signed up to these plus a waiting list! We are so pleased with the amount of enthusiasm we have had! Sorry if you missed out on a spot but watch this space we may do something similar again in the future. We are also planning to have a pub quiz around Easter time (date TBC), this will be open to all members, family and friends so keep an eye out for the s and Facebook posts. We are hoping it will be a fun evening and a chance to raise some money for both VVRC and The Air Ambulance. Everyone played brilliantly, showed some amazing techniques and skills but most importantly had a great laugh! In the end it was Mo who showed the most skill and took home first prize and a box of chocolates. I hope you like the fab action shots!! Our regular social evenings have become a real success and as much as we love our fourlegged friends it is lovely to be able to get together without them occasionally and see what we all look like without hats on! We try to keep the evenings varied and its always a lovely laid-back atmosphere so come along and enjoy! If you have any ideas for future social events then please don t hesitate to let either myself or Kat know. I can be found at megs- 88@hotmail.com and Kat at mogg-i@hotmail.co.uk Meg Evans 5

CLUB UPDATES Help days and subsidies At our most recent committee meeting we discussed help days and subsidies. As a club we want members to enjoy the activities and clinics we put on but felt we needed to clarify what is expected so it is fair for everyone. HELP DAYS: All members are expected to do a help day as part of their membership. If they do this they will get subsidies for clinics and their prelim entries paid for area competitions. It was decided after much discussion to make this an absolute minimum of 4 hours. Once a member has done their minimum 4 hours, they will get the subsidies. HELPERS AT AREA COMPETITIONS: These are often difficult for individuals to find especially new members. It was agreed that if someone helped at an area event this will go towards their help day. If they had to travel out of the local area they will get travel expenses paid and their travel time will count towards their hours. IF SOMEONE HELPS FOR YOU if a non-member / family member/friend helps that does not count towards the members help day. Instead, there will be a helper of the year award for all helpers that will be awarded at the AGM. SUBSIDIES: It has been agreed that 2018 subsidies will be a max of 3 for the hour so if sharing or having a lesson for part of an hour, members will receive their proportion of this amount. PAYMENT OF SUBSIDIES: A maximum of 50 subsidies has been set for the year per member for lessons and clinics. All lessons/clinics will be charged at the full price at the time of the lesson and the subsidy will be handed out at the end of the year when the help hours have been totalled and checked. PRELIM FEES and CHAMPIONSHIP FEES will be paid at the end of the year. This is subject to help day having been completed. VVRC has a new club logo! Designed by Lorna Hussey thank you! Thank you if you entered the logo competition, this was the winning design picked by the committee. If you would like this embroidered on your existing club saddlecloth, please contact Meg Evans and this can be done for approximately 6. Remember. You can now use Horse Monkey to book into many of our clinics, events or competitions. Signing up is very simple. There are more details on the VVRC web site 6

VVRC side saddle demo VVRC Merchandise Oh, I m so happy I ve wanted to have VVRC merchandise for years and finally it s here! Meg and I have been planning this for a while now and we really hope that there will be something for everyone. We ve picked items of clothing for riders on hacks, attending clinics and going to team competitions. It s not compulsory to have team colours at competitions but it s an option for you if you d like that additional team spirit! The new merchandise will have the brand new VVRC logo on it, courtesy of our very own Lorna Hussey. Thank you, Lorna, we love it! The white saddle pads are also available. If you already have the white saddle pads with the BRC logo then it s not a problem to get the new VVRC logo put on it if you want just get your saddle pad to Meg. The green saddle pads cannot be used for dressage or show jumping at area competitions but could be used for cross country. The club colours we have chosen are emerald green and white as we felt this would suit all horse colours and we are not aware of any other local clubs with the same colours. Meg and I have already seen, or purchased items from the chosen merchandise list and we re really pleased with them. We are hoping to have a version of all the merchandise at the AGM, so you can preview it. We are hoping to make a couple of bulk orders a year, so if you spot anything you fancy, please send your order forms in to either Meg or myself (Kat) by 28 th February We will not be doing sporadic orders so if you don t order something you want you ll just have to be an emerald green-eyed monster until the next order date. Some of the prices need to be confirmed. We really hope you like what we ve put together! Kat and Meg x Back in November we were joined by Emma Wood a side saddle instructor from Manchester. Emma gave our members an informative talk on the costumes and types of habit worn by side saddle riders before showing us a selection of side saddles from the 1900s. We were shown how a side saddle should fit on our beautiful demo horse Toby, and talked us through positioning of the demo rider, Ali. It was Toby s first time under the side saddle and he was a total star! Following the demo, six riders had a thirty minute private session with Emma on their own horse. Lots of progress was made during each session with most riders trotting and a few even cantering! Riders even wore the habit that Emma had brought with her to look the part. Above: Toby the demo horse! The afternoon proved to be a huge success with most of the horses and riders taking to side saddle like ducks to water Right: Morgan Nicholson and Duke. Far Right: Myfi Powell and Rebel 7

I specialise in a friendly and non-scary approach and have helped many people, of all ages, to greatly increase their confidence and ability as riders. A bit about me I know what a challenge riding can be, and have spent many years riding and training horses, training two of my own stallions to Prix St. George and Advanced Medium levels. I have competed to affiliated Advanced Medium so far. My particular passion is Spanish horses with whom I have won breed in-hand, ridden National Championships and won 'Ridden' (and 'In Hand') showing at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, amongst others. I have also enjoyed the teaching and training of many other breeds and their riders over the years. My own teacher for many years has been Stephen Clarke, head Olympic Judge and FEI Judge General.
