Vyrnwy Valley Riding Club Newsletter January 2017 May 2017 inclusive VVRC Show jumping report Autumn/Winter by The main focus in Autumn 2016 was to prepare teams for the Area Novice Showjumping at Southview on November 6th. Jumps in the first round being 80cm with second rounds at 85cm. Nine riders, plus two reserves, put their names forward and training started at the beginning of October with sessions by Janet Green or myself at Rhôs, Radfords and OEC. Three lucky members (Cassie Woods, Shelly Colohan and Paula Jeffreson) actually had a training session with Geoff Billington at Southview, kindly organised by Cassie. The evening was quite eventful as Cassie had forgotten her bridle and had to jump Patch in a head collar! Two teams were entered, with Heather Jones being a hero when she stepped in to ride in one of the teams with only a few days notice after one rider dropped out.. Continued on page 2 1

VVRC Show jumping report Autumn/Winter One team consisting of by Justine James (Alton), Helen Hathaway (Bechan Delinquent), Hollie Hindley (Rumpole Teeza) and Heather Jones (Flicka) did really well in finishing in 10th place out of 21 teams. The other team of Izzy Roberts (The Wizard), Paula Jeffreson (My Golden Lily), Shelley Colohan (Second Time Lucky) and Cassie Woods (Patch Curtis) were just out of the rosettes finishing in 8th place. This was an amazing result considering they had the unfortunate discounted score. Hollie Hindley was awarded the individual 1st rosette for the best rider of the day WELL DONE HOLLIE! The Facebook group set up by Justine was really helpful as the jumping order was only given on the Area 20 webpage and estimated times for each individual were worked out by Justine and Heather which was a great help. Throughout the preparation, there was a lovely team spirit with everyone keeping in contact with each other and support given on the day to all team members. Hat tagging didn t cause any problems on the day. Passports did, however, as one horse s passport was out by a few days. So, although allowed to ride, her score was discounted. Next time, all passports will be double checked by our very kind Simon Woods (vet) before sending in entries. All the riders and horses looked super smart with their VVRC Saddle cloths which they had either bought, or were loaned, by the club. Izzy Roberts very kindly swapped times with another rider who needed to leave early following the second round. Grateful thanks must go to Kat Morgan, who gave me such amazing support and guidance before the event and to her brilliant support on the actual day to all the riders. HUGE THANKS to Gaynor Morgan, Sharon Challinor and Rosie Hindley who were fabulous and supported everyone in so many ways during the practises and on the day. Heather Jones too for being so calm and supportive and helping me with the entries. 2

Novice team jumping competition rider comments: As someone who normally goes to shows/competes on my own, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being on the novice SJ team. It really made a difference as team members and their helpers were very supportive and helpful both at the practise beforehand and on the day. From supplying poppies to putting up practise fences, it was great to know everyone was there to support, congratulate or commiserate! Izzy Roberts I would like to thank Patsy for organising all the clinics leading up to the area Winter qualifiers at Southview. It made me feel really prepared and confident going into the competition. There are a great bunch of people involved with VVRC, all so supportive and helpful. My sister, Kat Morgan, has been a great support ever since I started riding again at the start of this year. I'd like to thank my mum, Gaynor Morgan, for everything she does to support me. It was Del s and my first team showjumping competition. Del really enjoyed himself. Clear first round and one down in the second. Overall really pleased with how he went. Go team VVRC! Helen Hathaway I really enjoyed representing VVRC in the SJ at Southview. Area 20 qualifiers are one of my favourite events as there is always such great support and a lovely atmosphere within our club members. Everyone helps and gets involved. It's lovely to come out of the ring to a group of smiling faces, even if it doesn't go to plan! I was chuffed with Patch, jumping two 4 fault rounds as it was his first SJ competition since surgery. Our team finished 8th out of 22 teams Cassie Woods This was the second year that I represented VVRC at the Winter Qualifiers and it was an experience that I loved! The weather was kind to us, although it was freezing cold, it didn t rain! I have to say the second time around was a lot less nerve racking and I had fun! The team spirit across both teams was great, and it was so nice that we all supported and encouraged each other. We couldn t have done it without the help of Patsy and Kat who were there every step of the way. Personally, I d like to say a massive thanks to Kat for encouraging me to compete at the Area qualifiers in the beginning, as I would have never done it without her giving me a gentle nudge and believing in Alton and I :) Taking part in Area showjumping and being part of a team has been an excellent experience for both Alton and I. I ve loved it and wouldn t hesitate to encourage others to take part. It s a great experience! Justine James 3

REPORTS/NEWS BRC Style Jumping and Riding Tests You may recently have received an inviting existing and potential style riding judges to attend training. I was very interested to understand the differences between judging dressage and judging style riding, and so attended the training day held at Radford s. There were lots of friendly faces there, including our own who is a List 1 BRC Style & Performance accredited judge and who, in addition to renewing her qualification, bravely volunteered to be a guinea pig rider for both jumping and flatwork with the lovely Splodgers. Also attending was List 3 BD judge, Sarah Dobell, who has kindly run dressage clinics for us and who is a National Level judge for Style and Performance judging. The aim of these special Riding Test competitions is to provide the opportunity for all riders to develop their skills. The Riding Tests have been designed to encourage the rider to ride their horse forward with a steady rhythm and tempo in to an elastic contact, with independent steady hands and a correctly balanced seat. Who wouldn t be inspired to attain this goal? The Style Jumping similarly is designed to encourage better pace and rhythm in competitions and to demonstrate the riders knowledge and effect of developing the canter at 350 meters per minute. I thoroughly enjoyed the training day, and will be mindful to keep checking how I feel my riding competence would be judged while I am schooling my horse. I was delighted to receive a letter the following week confirming that I have been assessed and accepted as a Probationary Judge, and I am looking forward to continuing my development. In summary; the tests are judged on the competence of the rider and their influence on the horse or pony. They are not judged on the horses ability or style. The competitions are suitable for all types of horses and ponies and so, if like me, you are not riding a typical dressage or showjump horse these could be for you! Patsy and I will be discussing the possibility of including Style Riding in our regular club dressage and showjumping competitions, and I encourage you to come along and give it a go! Jane Yorke VVRC s Jumps need a little TLC in preparation for the summer ahead. We are looking for volunteers to come and help us repair and paint them. This will be done one afternoon/evening in April, date TBC. Please contact Justine if you would be willing to help. Remember. You can now use Horse Monkey to book in to any of our clinics, events or competitions. Signing up is very simple. There are 8

Christmas Cracker Fun Show 11th December 2016 Seven intrepid members made it to Rhôs farm on a sunny morning in December to have some Christmas fun with their horses. We started with the best fancy dress, Patsy and her lovely Splodgers dressed as Christmas Elves were the winners. Patsy did have to take off some of the bells before the races could begin, as the other horses were not keen on going near them. Two teams then did various relay races with mugs, poles, eating dried crackers and finding and eating chocolates in icing sugar with no hands! At least we didn t do apple bobbing before; maybe for a warmer day. Next came a course of small jumps and the slowest trot around with penalties for cantering (quite a few of those), ride and run (easier to cut corners without your horse) and finally a pairs competition. Everyone had a great time, and even those who had said they did not want to jump did and were brilliant. Carol and Cel were amazing. After prize giving, everyone enjoyed a glass of mulled wine and mince pies. All in all a lovely morning to get into the Christmas spirit. Sally Evans 9

The rule book states that: Each horse must have a valid vaccination certificate, which undeniably relates to that horse, completed, signed and stamped on each line by a veterinary surgeon, who is not the owner of the animal. The certificate must state that each horse has received two injections for primary vaccination against equine influenza given no less than 21 days and no more than 92 days apart. Only the first two injections need to have been given before the horse can compete. In addition, a first booster injection must be given no less than 150 days and no more than 215 days after the second injection of the primary vaccination. Subsequently, booster injections must be given at intervals of not more than one year apart, commencing after the first booster injection. None of these injections must be given within the preceding 7 days, including the day of competition or entry into the competition stables. There is a flu vaccination checker on our website 10
