But you really can't say the sky is dark...it is a vast expanse of untold trillions of stars cast across the sky, a shimmering mass punctuated by glowing constellations and brilliant points of light. The view is absolutely breathtaking! But contrast that with the daytime skies. Brilliant blue fading to pale blue at the horizon, sometimes filled with lazy white clouds, sometimes with towering thunderheads and curtains of rain. With 300+ days of sunshine and moderate temperatures most of the time, our climate is simply wonderful. And that is just the start. Flat-topped mesas and deep canyons of the Edwards plateau where Sanderson lives abruptly drop off to the broad basins and high mountains of the west, the Big Bend of Texas. We live in the heart of the last frontier of Texas, a true desert wilderness overflowing with life and pristine beauty, largely untouched by man.

But we aren't just about cacti, we have an abundance of wildlife as well.

In fact, being situated at the confluence of three great biomes...the Chihuahua Desert, the Edwards Plateau and the southern reaches of the Great Plains...we have more species of cacti and succulents than any other place in Texas...or the world for that matter! But we aren't just about cacti, we have an abundance of wildlife as well. Whitetail deer, mule deer, even elk in some areas, antelope, javelina (a type of desert pig), and all kinds of varmints are present. Add to that mix quail and several species of dove and migratory birds, plus many kinds of snakes and lizards, and you have a photographer's and hunter's paradise. And for those with a taste for the exotic there are several ranches that stock non-native game. Day hunting and hunting packages and leases are a big part of our economy.

And yes, we do have water in West Texas. Amistad Reservoir at Del Rio offers a huge opportunity for fishing and boating, with well developed marinas and services for the sportsman.

Rafting and canoeing on the Rio Grande are a great pasttime in West Texas, with established companies conducting business from Presidio to Del Rio.

And, some pretty spectacular 300- pound catfish have been pulled from the muddy Rio! There are smaller lakes and reservoirs also.

And, the Pecos River cuts through the landscape as it makes its run to the Rio Grande. Rafting and canoeing on the Rio Grande are a great pasttime in West Texas, with established companies conducting business from Presidio to Del Rio. One can paddle through 1,000-foot deep canyons on the Rio as they make their way through a hundred-plus miles of spectacular landscape. And, some pretty spectacular 300- pound catfish have been pulled from the muddy Rio! There are smaller lakes and reservoirs also. For instance, you may have to travel some to get what you want, but there is no bumper-to-bumper traffic or snarled freeway off-ramps. In fact, each trip is like a minivacation through the most spectacular scenery you would ever want to see. You may have to be patient to get what you want, but usually, travel is not necessary as local shops in Sanderson provide most everything you need. But West Texas and Terrell County are more than just top-notch recreation areas. Being a wilderness area, the communities in West Texas are few and far between, but don't be mistaken. Though they offer most of the amenities of larger places, there is an adjustment that has to be made.
