Th total of 66 hunting casualtis is th highst vr rcordd in Orgon, but still vry fw as far as th numbr of huntrs is concrnd. Dr huntrs again ld th fild with 26 accidnts. This is undrstandabl whn you considr that thr wr ovr 233,000 nimrods in pursuit of ths fin gam animals. Thr wr 15 accidnts ach in upland gam birds and "off-sason" shooting, whil lk and migratory bird huntrs chalkd up 5 accidnts apic. Gnrally, any firarms accidnt that occurs is xtrmly srious du to th typ of gun normally usd for hunting. Th fact that most accidnts occur at rangs lss than 25 yards should also b considrd. Wstrn hros ar bing mulatd by youngstrs and "juvnil" adults with som tragic rsults. This yar, in Orgon alon, 6 prsons hav did and 28 injurd thmslvs whil playing with rvolvrs and pistols. To illustrat how som hunting accidnts happn, lt's look at last yar's rcord. ONE YOUNG HUNTER PLACED THE MUZZLE of a rifl on his foot. Th rifl was cockd and loadd whn th youngstr pulld th triggr just to s if th safty AGE OF SHOOTER was "on." Anothr young huntr shot at th hub cap of a narby automobil. Th bullt ricochtd and sriously injurd an adult hunting companion. Still a third juvnil huntr saw a movmnt in som brush and thought it was a crow. Blasting away with his shotgun, h hit two fllow studnts, snding thm to th hospital for a total of fiv wks. An adult huntr saw a yllow hat and thought it was th rump patch of an lk. H fatally injurd on young man and narrowly missd th scond. Anothr adult sportsman fll whil rturning to camp in th dark. His rifl dischargd and th bullt pntratd his lg.
