Two hybrid blugrasss (P. arachnifra Torr. x P. pratnsis) wr also includd in th study. Mthods This study was conductd at th Rocky Ford Turfgrass Rsarch Cntr nar Manhattan, Kansas, USA. Data wr collctd for 105 days in 2007 (Jun 19 Octobr 1) and 108 days in 2009 (Jun 22 Octobr 7). Turfgrasss includd 28 KBG cultivars and two hybrid blugrasss (Tabl 1). Commrcially availabl cultivars of KBG wr slctd to includ rprsntativs from major KBG phnotypic groups (Not: In th rsults sction, only groups with thr or mor cultivars wr usd whn comparing groups). Also, bcaus visual quality was of intrst, cultivars wr slctd basd on prformanc in National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) trials. Th plots wr maintaind wll watrd until th study bgan ach yar. Thraftr, watr was withhld until 50% or mor of a plot displayd drought strss. Watr (2.54 cm) was thn applid by hand to th individual plots. Turfgrass quality and drought strss symptoms wr valuatd daily. This procss continud until th nd of th study, aftr which all plots wr r-watrd and allowd to rcovr. Plots wr mown wkly at 7.6 cm. Turfgrass quality valuations, basd on colour, dnsity, and uniformity of th canopis, wr mad using a visual rating scal of 1 to 9, with 1 = brown turf, 6 = minimally accptabl for a hom lawn or golf cours rough, and 9 = optimum turf. Drought strss was dfind as th turf displaying wilting, failur of th canopy to rmain upright aftr foot traffic, and a gnral darkning colour of th turf. Bcaus changs in drought strss wr somtims rapid from day to day, particularly undr conditions of high tmpraturs, it was not unusual for irrigation to b applid whn gratr than 50% of a plot (for xampl, up to 70 or 80%) displayd drought strss. 7 ~3.5 month priod in ach yar of th study, rangd widly from 23.3 cm (man=2.2 mm/day) in Bdazzld to 44.9 cm (4.2 mm/ day) in Knblu (Fig. 1). In Bdazzld, Apollo, Cabrnt, and Uniqu, 25.0 cm (2.3 mm/day) or lss of watr was applid, which was significantly lss than Knblu, Blu Knight, Wllington, Moonlight, Baron, Diva, Midnight II, Touchdown, Shamrock, and Blu Vlvt; in th lattr 10 cultivars, 35.1 cm (3.3 mm/day) or mor of watr was applid. Howvr, thr wr no statistical diffrncs among th 15 cultivars that rcivd th last amount of watr (Fig. 1, Bdazzld through Sky). Days to wilt btwn irrigations, which was roughly invrs th amount of watr applid (r=-0.91), rangd from 6.4 d in Knblu to 13.1 d in Cabrnt, a diffrnc of narly on wk (Fig. 2). Days to wilt was gratr in Cabrnt, Bdazzld, Uniqu, and Apollo (11.9 to 13.1 d) than in th 18 blugrasss with th last days to wilt (6.4 to 9.0 d; Knblu through Park in Fig. 2). Ths intrvals provid th practitionr with an stimat of irrigation frquncy rquird to maintain th various KBGs at a prformanc lvl similar to this study, at last in th transition zon of th U.S. In addition to lss frqunt irrigation, Figur 2. Whn avragd ovr all cultivars within ach phnotypic group, 27.3 cm of watr was applid to Compact Amrica typs and 27.7 cm to Mid- Atlantic typs (both about 2.6 mm/day), which was lss than th Common, Compact, and Compact Midnight groups (Fig. 3). Th Common typs rcivd mor watr (40.1 cm, 3.8 mm/day) than all othr groups xcpt Compact. Days to wilt was also gratr in Mid-Atlantic and Compact Amrica than in all othr groups (Fig. 4), indicating cultivars in Mid-Atlantic and Compact Amrica could gnrally go longr without irrigation. Visual Quality With th xcption of th Common typs in 2007, th visual quality of all blugrasss was accptabl (>6) at th bginning of th study in ach yar (Fig. 5). In all blugrasss and in both yars, howvr, visual quality dclind to blow what was considrd minimally accptabl (Fig. 5). This indicats waiting until 50% wilt to apply irrigation was insufficint to maintain accptabl visual quality in KBG, at last for homownrs or suprintndnts who dsir a modrat standard of quality in th strssful climat of th transition zon. Prhaps visual quality could hav bn maintaind at accptabl lvls by applying watr whn only 25% of th plot xhibitd symptoms of drought strss; furthr rsarch is rquird. Our mthod may b appropriat, howvr, for th typical homownr with no in-ground sprinklrs or suprintndnts with low-maintnanc roughs on thir golf courss, or whr th primary concrn is watr consrvation and som dormancy is accptabl. Visual quality in all blugrasss gnrally rmaind abov four and rcovry was rapid in th fall aftr rsuming irrigation (data not shown). Although visual quality dclind to lss than six in all cultivars, th tim rquird to do so rangd widly from 8.1 d in Knblu to 44.8 d in Blu Vlvt (data not shown for all cultivars; s Brmr t al. or Lwis t al., 2012 for gratr dtail). Th dclin was slowr in Blu Vlvt, Award, Midnight, Cabrnt, Uniqu, and Nu Dstiny (36 to 44.8 days) than in Park, Baron, Wllington, and Knblu (8.1 to 14.2 days). Thus, four of fiv cultivars in th Compact Midnight group maintaind quality Figur 4. As a group, th Compact Midnight typs rmaind abov a quality of six for longr than th Common as wll as th BVMG typs, but also rcivd mor watr than th Compact Amrica and Mid-Atlantic groups (Fig. 3). Rlationships btwn Watr Applid and Visual Quality Idally, cultivars or groups that rquir th last watr would also hav th highst visual quality. Thos rlationships ar illustratd in th scattr biplot in Figur 6, in which cultivars with th most favorabl charactristics appar in th lowr right sction. In gnral, irrigation applications wr gratr in blugrasss with poorr quality (Fig. 6). This pattrn probably rsultd from improvd cultivars with morphological proprtis that both nhancd turf quality and rducd vapotranspiration (watr us). Such improvd proprtis includ compact or dwarfd growth habits, horizontal laf orintation, and gratr shoot dnsity. All 15 blugrasss with th lowst watr applications wr also rankd among thos with th highst visual quality (Fig. 6; thr wr no statistical diffrncs among cultivars with avrag visual quality gratr than 5.5). Th amount of watr applid to ths 15 cultivars with suprior turf quality was also blow th man watr applid to all 30 blugrasss (32.8 cm). In contrast to th 15 top prformrs, six cultivars wr rankd within th group that rcivd th most watr and had th lowst visual quality (Fig. 6). Thos six cultivars, which includd Knblu, Wllington, Midnight II, Baron, Diva, and Shamrock, had nithr th high visual quality nor low watr rquirmnt traits w wr scrning for in this study. Conclusions Cultivar slction in KBG had significant impacts on watr rquirmnts and visual quality ratings. Among cultivars, diffrncs in sasonal watr applications wr as grat as 21.6 cm and diffrncs in days to 50% wilt btwn irrigations wr as grat as 6.7 days (i.., narly on wk). Basd on statistical rang tsts, only 15 of th 30 cultivars wr in th group that both rcivd th last watr and had th gratst visual quality. Rsults indicatd that, undr conditions similar to thos in our study, KBG in th Compact Amrica and Mid-Atlantic phnotypic groups can b slctd for thir lowr irrigation rquirmnts without sacrificing visual quality, and typs from thos two groups may rprsnt th bst slctions for brding fforts to achiv such goals.
