As the current President I can not always answer, agree or disagree. Instead the information is passed on to the responsible Director as a compliment or something needing attention or resolution. Our club is moving in a stable direction on a day to day basis. The next few months member participation and input is needed. We need to look closely at 2011 and beyond. Where do we want to be in 2015? How do we want to proceed? In the very near future the Expansion Committee will meet and make a list of recommendations. If you have a priority, talk to one of the board members, Dean Merkle the Chairman of the Expansion Committee or myself. The list of items from the Committee should be available for discussion at the October or November Meeting. Remember to practice Safety at All times while at the club and especially while coming and going home! See you at the Club ROAD WORK HAS BEGUN The road work on Old Stage has begun, construction is starting East and moving West. There are Road Closed signs but DGSC will remain open, please for the time being use Nettle School Rd for easier access. We will notify you when to switch back to Saratoga. Entertainment: I would like to first thank everyone for coming out to the picnic on Sunday. The number of attendees was approx.145 people. We hope everyone had a fun time. A very special thank you to Rose, and her daughter, Michelle, for all of their hard work and effort that went into making this event a success. A special thank you to Tom Scroppo for donating the Italian sausage, and the use of his grill. Thanks to all the probationary members who also worked hard all day:harry Berge (and son, Tim), Irene Cechura, Bob Duddy, John Durkan, Ray Felix, Ken Korp, Jim Lestina, Wayne McCracken, Scott Mitzner, and Dennis Reid. Also thanks to the handful of senior members, and families, who also chipped in to help. I would like to thank my wife, Marianne for running the raffle this year. She has worked for the last month on getting everything ready and organized for this event. Thanks to all the guests who bought tickets--we sold 1,230 tickets and made a nice profit which will be in the financial report at the board meeting. Thanks to all the generous people who donated prizes:brent Rogers, my wife Marianne, John Blaha, Ken Cechura, Jeff Hall from Bass Pro Shops, Dan Phillips, Herman Welch, Dan Lucsay, Jim Olin, and my wife's boss, Jimmy, of Plainfield's Delight Rest. Also thanks to Rick Gibbs for allowing us to use the left over Turkey and Hams from the club shoots. We hope everyone had a good time. The entertainment for the children seemed to be a big hit--koko the Clown did a great job with her magic show, balloon animals, and face painting. Thanks to everyone involved in making this picnic a success. Pictures should be available via the Downers Grove website soon.

Here it is September already! Where has all of the summer gone? The Grand American has come and gone, the picnic is over, new target seasons have started What is a shooter to do? Come out to the club and shoot of course! We will be keeping all of our venues open for as long as we can during the fall, and winter shooting seasons. We still have several ATA shoots this year, the Northern Zone Shoot on September 11 th, and 12 th which will be a LARGE shoot. We had a one-day shoot in August that had over 120 shooters. Several of our members did very well at this shoot, Dean Merkle was handicap champion after a shoot- 0ff, and Norm Gilmore was the yard winner. If there are any other winners from the Club and I forgot to mention your name my apologies. We also have the Grundy County Fall Handicap in October. If any one would like to volunteer your efforts for either of these shoots please contact me or one of the other Directors. Mark Groynch held our first ever registered Sporting Clays shoot and had over 40 shooters attend. It was a combined 5-Stand, and Sporting Clays Shoot, and there are going to be several other Sporting Clays and 5-stand shoots this year. I have been approached by the Zone Director of the National Skeet Shooting Association to explore the possibility of hosting sanctioned shoots for them at DGSC. The Board will look at this, and other events to see if our facility could possibly host them sometime in the future. Hunting seasons have opened up, so all Senior Members should check with Chuck F. our Director of Hunting. He has been hard at work on the club habitat to improve the overall hunting opportunities that we have at the Club! If you would like to help him please contact him by phone or . Chuck does a lot of this stuff by himself, and I m sure he would appreciate any help! The Grounds are looking good thanks to all that work on the Grounds Committee. Numerous improvements are going on as I write this article, and the Expansion Committee will soon present its recommendations to both the Board and General Membership. Dean Merkle is the Chair of this Committee, and is assisted by other Senior Members. Contact them if you should have any thoughts for our future! Looking forward to seeing you at the Club very soon! Rick Gibbs Youth/Community Relations: Hello to all fellow shooters. The month of September is going to be a busy one. Besides the two big registered shooting events, the Morris Boy Scouts will be visiting the Club. The scout troop will arrive on Friday night September 17th, and leave Sunday morning the 19th. We will provide shooting instruction on Saturday the 18th. If there is anyone interested in helping coach and instruct these young shooters, please let me know. I am always looking for additional "eyes" and 'hands" to insure safety with the shooters. On October 24th we will be holding one of our club pheasant youth hunts. Young hunters need their Hunter Safety Card, and Hunting Permit. The fee is $30.00 and a lunch will be provided. I will post a sign up sheet at the club front counter. On a closing note. On August 22nd at the ATA Northern Zone Shoot, I had a good day shooting and alot of "firsts", for me. I would like to extend a big "Thank You" to all the members, shooters, and non-shooters for the handshakes and kind words. The trophies are great, but I will never forget that day because of your kind words and gestures. Dean Merkle Vice President s Remarks: Please if you still haven t gotten your official DGSC badge check in with me at dlucsay@downersgrovesc.com so we can make sure everything is up to date and you receive your official 2010 badge. If you renew FOID and/or NRA please leave a copy in the membership box behind the counter. Probationary members if you are still having trouble filling up your hour sheet, please contact me and/or a Board member - they will find work for you. Sept has several more opportunities ATA Northern Zone 9/11 & 9/12, NSCA at the end of the month 9/25 and 9.26 and there is plenty of ground and building work. Dan Lucsay

3 PAGE 3 DGSC NEWS NETWORK VOLUME 10, ISSUE 9 Secretary Notes: Sept General Membership Meeting is coming up - Please contact Don Fredrick if you would like to address the Board and/or the General Membership at the Sept meeting. You will be called to address your topic in the normal order of business. Remember if its not on the agenda we can t guarantee it will be discussed this meeting. Hunting/Fishing News: The youth pheasant hunt will be on October 24th. The hunt is open to all hunters 17 and under. They must have taken the Illinois hunter safety course and have a valid Illinois hunting license in order to participate. Cost is $30 and includes 4 pheasants and lunch. There will be registration forms at the trap counter. In order to make the hunt a success we will need mentors to bring their hunting dogs and work with the kids. Drop me an if you would be interested in helping out. Hunting season has started, remember to sign in at the pole barn and to record your harvest when you leave. BOW HUNTERS: when you put up your tree stand be sure to mark it with your name and to put a tag up on the board in the pole barn marking its location. Any tree stand without a name will be removed. Finally, the farmer wanted me to remind everyone to stay out of the crops!! Chuck Feuillan Grounds Information: Road construction has started and so has our work. The old service gate has been removed and the new one installed. The old gate was in the new right of way and needed to be done before the dozer arrived. We have a large two day shoot coming and the condition of the grounds will be seen by many shooters from all over our state and out of state. It would be a good time for those new members that are still in need of their sixty hours of probation work to get started. By-laws state, new members must work a committee for one full year with a minimum of sixty hours. Weather permitting we will be working Thu 9/9, after shooting, and Fri 9/10 starting at If the weather looks bad for those times, the work will be done earlier in the week. If you can t work those days, but you d like to still help out please contact me there is plenty that needs to be done! Pete Weber ATA Results and News: Volunteers Needed for September 11th & 12th Northern Zone ATA Shoot! First trophy results for the Northern Zone Indian Shoot in August are available via the Downers Grove website. Congratulations to all, especially our own Dean Merkle who had a particularly outstanding day! If you weren't there, we had a great turnout with 129 shooters and it went pretty smoothly, if a little long (I think the last shoot off finished abut 8:30.) And as always, thanks to the great group who help us all the time--deb, Cheryl, Don, Frank, Diane, Dean, Rick--you guys are the backbone of the ATA program. The Northern Zone Shoot this month is going to be very LARGE volunteers are most definitely needed. Most volunteer spots are only for a couple of hours, and can easily be done while also shooting the event. Examples are taking ATA/ISTA membership renewals in the check in line from about 7:30 am to 9:30 am, or relief scoring while the main scorer is shooting or taking a break. Please contact Jeff/Paula or Rick and let us know what days you are available, what times (leave early, come late). If we do not have enough volunteers in advance, we will have to add paid help. Paying scorers and trap help is the largest expense we have for our shoots--more than targets or trophies. Every opening that can be filled with a volunteer instead of paid help is pure profit to the club. It's a great way for probationary members to get their volunteer hours while still having a good day out shooting. Those interested could also ATA.DGSC@downersgrovesc.com with their availability. Jeff Gibbs Sporting Clays/5 Stand News: Sept 11th SC/5 Stand Club Shoot Cancelled due to Schedule Conflict The 5 Stand Flurry that was scheduled for Sept 11th is going to be moved to Oct due to a schedule conflict. We will also have a Chili Cook Off on the same day in Oct. At the moment we are tentatively scheduling that Flurry and Cook Off for Sunday Oct 10th - please watch the Downers Grove website and next months newsletter for the definite date. August Sporting Clay and 5 Stand Shoot ended with High Over All Score going to Hunter Davis, 2nd Place Jan Gronych and 3rd Place Tony Alterio. 5 Stand High Score was Hunter, with Brent Rogers and Mark Gronych being 1 target away. Wayne McCracken was our Bird Friendly Shooter. Thank you to Jon Allgeyer who ran the grills, and our normal helpers the Fredrick family and the probationary helpers Ken Korp and Wayne McCracken and the normal SC committee Mike, Brent, Jon, Mark and Jan. NSCA Registered Shoot Sept 25th and 26th. Program will be 100 Sporting Clays and/or 50 5 Stand. We received lots of comments and suggestions during our 1st NSCA shoot and we can t wait to see how people respond to the changes. Please come out and enjoy the course, you can join the NSCA on those days or there is a Hunters Class so you don t have to join NSCA to shoot the event on that day. Lunch is also included in the full event. Volunteers are also needed so probationary members here is another shot at hours along with members this is a great way to get involved and learn about Sporting Clays. Please contact Mark Gronych if your available. Mark Gronych Remember SAVE TIME & MONEY renew your NRA at the club while you re there shooting. 1 yr renewal/membership $25 when done at DGSC
