For 5 days every year, 600,000 spectators, 400 accredited journalists, and nearly 2,000 professional and amateur riders gather at this multidisciplinary international festival. 5 FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 MONTPELLIER Media Guide FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 ACTION SPORTS FESTIVAL FWS is an extreme sports tour that brings together the best action sports athletes on the planet to compete in different cities around the globe. It is the biggest and most prestigious multi-disciplinary action sports series in the world. The selection of sports is incredible and includes BMX Freestyle Park and Flatland, Skateboard, Mountain Bike, Roller Freestyle, Wakeboard, Scooter, and Parkour. The tour welcomes all skill levels. To date, more than 2,700 amateur and professional athletes from over 40 countries have taken part, resulting in dramatic displays of jaw-dropping stunts, jumps and tricks. Every year the parks and ramps get bigger and the riders levels of competitiveness increase. FWS 2018 is set to be the biggest yet. FISE has teamed up with several International Federations,so each stop will host their own official World Cup! We have partnered with UCI (International Cycling Union) for a third year to bring spectators the UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup, alongside a brand-new event, the UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Cup. We continue to be home to the FIG Parkour World Cup and WS Roller Freestyle Cup, both of which always excite and surprise. The addition of these cups has further raised the stakes for athletes and helped cement the tour s position as the most anticipated competition for all action sports enthusiasts. At each stage of the tour, riders have the opportunity to win points, earn significant prize money, and gain media exposure. Overall rankings are calculated at the end of the tour to determine the 2018 winners from each discipline. WORLDWIDE TOUR FISE continues to offer spectacular events in popular locations around the world. The festival-like vibes and action sports-filled days are what keeps people returning to our events. As well as competitions, fans can enjoy exhibitions, industry demos, and various activities. The 2018 Series began in Hiroshima, after a launch event in Jeddah, and the season will take in multiple international destinations including Montpellier, Budapest and Edmonton before culminating with the finals in Chengdu, China. True to the spirit of FISE, all events are free to attend and everyone is welcome. 5

9 FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 MONTPELLIER Media Guide FISE Montpellier was 20 last year. It continues to follow its own very special upward path in the world of urban sports. Montpellier has become a magnet for riders and competitors from all around the world who gather every May to take part in the city s unique festival. FISE, internationally recognised through FWS, is 100% made in Montpellier. Two new destinations have been added to our 2018 schedule: Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), which hosted a pre-season event, and Hiroshima (Japan) where the tour launched in March. After the Montpellier stop we ll be revisiting our old friends in Budapest (Hungary), Chengdu (China) and Edmonton (Canada). Every year, Montpellier hosts this huge public sports event, welcoming over 500,000 people for a period of 5 days. After consultation with residents, there will be no entertainment this year on the Esplanade de l Europe. FISE remains an extremely popular event festive, exciting, and free. I salute the selflessness of the André-Benoît brothers, the organisers. They have managed to meet a double target: broadening the knowledge of as many disciplines as possible previously known only to a few insiders and developing what started as a student project into an international gathering with an ever-growing number of participants and observers. These opportunities beyond the economic and tourism effects put Montpellier on the map as the capital of extreme sports. The City of Montpellier and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole have been privileged partners of FISE Montpellier since the outset. There would be no FISE without the mobilisation of the many city services and directorates. FISE would not have the same resonance amongst the young without the investment of the Métropole in the installation of municipality skateparks and the organisation of FISE Métropole. Again this year, a huge crowd is expected on the beautiful Lez riverbanks an audience buzzing as it watches the exploits of 2,000 international riders. FISE Montpellier and its surrounding area is set to be an essential stage on the road to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Philippe SAUREL, President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole Mayor of Montpellier With a 2018 budget of nearly 23 million dedicated to sport, the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée region pursues an ambitious sports policy with two main objectives: to enable each and every one of its inhabitants to play sport in their own area, and to ensure the influence of Occitanie at national and international level. Because major sporting events contribute to the popularity of our region encouraging participation in sport, highlighting our top-level athletes, and playing a real role in local economy our regional sports policy supports more than 250 major events each year. The International Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) is, of course, one of them. I am proud to renew our commitment to FISE Montpellier, an unmissable event celebrating its 21st anniversary this year. Action sports convey values of sharing and solidarity. Inclusion in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide new opportunities and increased visibility to the incoming disciplines, including skateboarding and BMX, with their new equipment, partners and sponsors. FISE is open to the everyone: young and old, male and female, amateur and professional. It is one of the most significant free sports events in France (after the Tour de France and the Vendée Globe). Last year, nearly 600,000 spectators attended FISE Montpellier. Our support is also part of the region s strong commitment to action sports, notably through Team Occitanie/Sud de France. Together, we aim to strengthen the impact of major events as well as the reputation and attractiveness of our area. The region has demonstrated its commitment to sport and sportsmanship, which contribute to the development and social cohesion of our area just as they help shape our identity. This is why we are implementing an ambitious sports policy to give our 5.7 million inhabitants access to quality sports. This ambassadorial city of the Herault, with its famous Lez riverbanks and exceptional location in France, helps make the festival so spectacular. Established over 20 years ago, FISE provides an opportunity which, beyond the economic and tourism benefits, provides huge publicity and ensures Montpellier is regarded as the capital of extreme sports. Its involvement, together with the Occitanie region, is very strong, and allows for drawing power and dynamism important at both national and international level. TOP 5 little gems for outside relaxation: Place Candolle, Place de la Canourgue, Square de la Babote, Place Saint-Anne, Place de Millénaire. A TYPICAL DAY IN MONTPELLIER After a coffee in the Place de la Comédie, why not have a pleasant stroll around Montpellier s old pedestrian centre? Then take a trip around the small cobbled streets and enjoy the numerous trompes l oeil and unusual buildings. There are Street Art works all over the place take special note of the small Mr BMX bikes embedded in the walls. Take a detour by tram to the Carnon and Palavas beaches before a little break on the natural site of the Lake of Gold. Then it s already time to dive into Montpellier s eclectic night-life. 12 SPORTS AREAS & FREESTYLE PARK 1 The Freestyle Park is vast, covering an area of around 1500m2 and made up of ramps and obstacles built from wood and iron. All the ramps are oversized which lets the pros create their very best tricks, while still maintaining various lines for amateurs to enjoy. FREESTYLE PARK 2 This Park is designed for athletes to achieve maximum speed, air and slides. In this area, ramps, obstacles and rails are much closer together than in other parks. This means they are more adaptable to small-sized wheels, so riders have to push less to cross the park from one side to another and can perform more easily on structures. WATER PARK The Wake Park consists of a cable mechanism with a rope and handle attached. Riders are pulled over water around a course consisting of ramps, rails and walls which are used to perform tricks. Wakeboarding isn t for the faint-hearted as riders are pulled on boards at up to 30kmh. STREET PARK The Street Park is made up of benches, ramps, stairs, quarter pipes, and boxes that generate a diverse space suited to all riding styles. The Park provides an authentic street experience for riders to create runs like those they thrive on in cites. FLATLAND Always located at the heart of every event, the FISE Flatland Area looks like a scene from the theatre with riders taking centre stage. Spectators can get up close and personal with the athletes whilst they perform their amazing tricks. SLOPESTYLE Slopestyle courses are traditionally found in a natural environment, but FISE rose to the challenge to bring them to the city. Tracks are achieved by building massive ramps which allow athletes to get the speed and height they need to create breathtaking tricks. PARKOUR This area is strewn with a variety of blocks, walls and bars designed to mirror the different obstacles found in urban areas. To overcome them, the athletes have to make use of a range of techniques. SPINE RAMP The Spine Ramp consists of two ramps with a double copping (spine) in the middle, forming a W shape. This allows athletes to perform a huge range of tricks on either side of the double ramp, which is usually surrounded by the crowd. 12

The riders use as much of the park as possible to create astonishing aerial tricks and impressively innovative runs. Riders are judged on the difficulty, quality and range of tricks performed. Thanks to the riders continually developing and pushing the boundaries of their sport, BMX Freestyle Park has recently been recognised as an Olympic sport. It will make its debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In this discipline, originality, style and flair are what really count. Whatever the obstacle, Roller riders combine high speeds with awesome tricks resulting in dynamic runs which excite and entertain. Since its beginnings, Roller Freestyle Culture has been shaped by balancing big sessions on the park with street culture, which keeps its popularity expanding worldwide 13

14 SCOOTER FREESTYLE SPINE RAMP BMX/SKATEBOARD SCOOTER/ROLLER Scooter Freestyle is one of the newest action sports and is increasing in popularity across the world. Participants can be seen riding scooters in street spots and parks. Despite the sport being relatively new, riders have advanced quickly and keep pushing to new heights. For the most part, tricks are inspired by BMX as they have a similar set up of handlebars and two wheels, but occasionally riders take inspiration from skateboarding. No matter the discipline, Spine Ramp riding is all about putting on a show. Empowered by the crowd gathered around them, riders demonstrate their skills by using each side of the ramp as well as the central spine to perform a range of different tricks. The biggest advantage of the ramp is its versatility which for use by different disciplines. It s always a pleasure watching BMX, Scooter and Skateboard riders rocking the same spot. 14

15 FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 MONTPELLIER Media Guide WAKEBOARD UCI BMX FLATLAND WORLD CUP Wakeboarding was introduced in the early 80s and is often described as a cross between Waterski and Snowboard. Athletes stand locked onto their wakeboards and are pulled around a circuit. They can use ramps, walls and rails to achieve maximum air and perform tricks. Each run is judged according to the height and difficulty of the tricks. It s a thrilling and exhilarating sport that is growing in popularity every year. Performed on a flat surface with no equipment other than a bike, BMX Flatland is the most artistic, aesthetic and creative form of the sport. Athletes combine skill, balance and creativity to perform a kind of dance with the bike. More than just a contest, they create a show. The event has quickly become a crowd favourite and is expanding in popularity around the world thanks to the dedication of the riders who continually push their sport. 15

16 SKATEBOARD STREET BMX STREET Skateboarding, initially just a simple way of getting about, boomed in the 1980s to become the force it is today. Its influence has spread into the very heart of popular culture. Riders are judged on the technicality, originality and versatility of their lines. The continual growth and popularity of the sport has led to it being recognised by the Olympics. Competitions held on Street Park and Bowl will be included in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The size and shape of the structures used in BMX Street are very different from those that confront BMX Park event riders, although the judging criteria is similar. BMX Street replicates the obstacles found in an average city. Riders constantly challenge themselves with banks, stairs and rails to create various tricks and lines. Its the technicality of their tricks and the creativity of each run that really matters. 16

17 FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 MONTPELLIER Media Guide MOUNTAIN BIKE FREESTYLE FIG PARKOUR WORLD CUP It s a truly aerial discipline thanks to the massive structure of a Slopestyle course. Riders live by the motto go big or go home. To optimise performance, the bikes are designed to be easily manoeuvrable and to withstand the impact of huge jumps. Throughout the course, riders try to combine the maximum number of tricks on each run. They are judged on combo complexity, height gained and the quality of each trick. A discipline that originated on the streets, Parkour owes its initial popularity partly to cinema. It can be summed up as the art of getting from one point to another by respecting one key principle: efficiency. In the Speed-run, athletes must overcome obstacles as quickly as possible to reach the finish line. In the Freestyle event, they have use obstacles to show off their style and creativity. 17

19 FISE WORLD SERIES 2018 MONTPELLIER Media Guide THIS YEAR, THERE WAS AN ADDED STAGE IN HIROSHIMA, JAPAN. A MONTH AGO, THIS WORLD-FAMOUS CITY GAVE AN EPIC WELCOME TO ITS FIRST FWS STAGE. In all disciplines, international riders were seriously challenged by the impressive level of the host competitors. The Japanese made it on to several podiums in both men s and women s categories. Some of them also won their invitation to compete at FISE Montpellier; watch them very closely on the banks of the Lez! The tour then goes to the great Canadian outdoors of Edmonton, before returning to Europe to ignite the Hungarian capital of Budapest. The FISE Family gets together again in November as the season closes with the legendary Chinese stage in Chengdu. UCI BMX FREESTYLE PARK WORLD CUP MEN 1 BRANDON LOUPOS - AGE 25 - AUS 4 JEREMY MALOTT - AGE 20 - USA 2 KENNETH TENCIO - AGE 24 - CRI 5 NICK BRUCE - AGE 24 - USA 3 DANIEL DHERS - AGE 32 - VEN 6 ALEX COLEBORN - AGE 25 - GBR BRANDON LOUPOS From his first competition where he launched only a few no-footers and X-ups, this Australian rider kept increasing his level and is now part of one of the most famous action sports shows: the Nitro Circus. Unpredictable, and always popping up where he s least expected, his 1st place at the Hungarian stop of FWS allowed him to spend some time at the second stop on the global ranking of the World Tour, and to reach gold since the opening of the season in Hiroshima. KENNETH TENCIO Originally from Costa Rica, Kenneth continues to surprise with his raw talent and unpredictable runs. Still a novice 9 years ago, it is thanks to a friend that he discovered a competition in his discipline before getting his first 20-inches two months later. Commitment, passion and dedication are his leitmotiv and he never misses an opportunity to drop from the highest module of the Park. DANIEL DHERS This Venezuelan legendary BMX Freestyle Park rider has hardly ever been off the podium since his entry on the world stage in He participates in all major international competitions and achieved 1st place in the general classification of FWS His intensive training programme provides him with optimum physical capacity. With his precise tricks and planned sequences, nothing is left to chance in his graphical runs that propel him to the top of his discipline. 19

As modest as she is passionate, Hannah has devoted herself to BMX since a very young age, and this has translated into the technicality of her tricks and her magnitude on the modules. With her massive flairs, this American already rolls better than the majority of boys her age. Many see her as the future of women s BMX, and she will definitely be representing it at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. ANGIE MARINO With her big smile and blond hair spilling out of her helmet, Angie is easily recognisable on the Parks. But it is her super fluid style and range that sets her apart and got her 2nd place at FISE Hiroshima. She is a real driving force for inspiration among women for her discipline creating a site and a magazine dedicated to the female BMX scene, Yeah Zine BMX Girls. LARA LESSMANN Lara is an athlete to watch very closely. Born in Flensburg, Germany, she started BMX at the age of 9. Initially influenced by her brother, she practised regularly and her perfectionism has enabled her to take 1st place in Budapest last year. The prospect of participating in the Olympic Games in 2020 has even increased her motivation, as evidenced by her commitment to the Parks. 21

His runs have original lines and the perfection with which he does his tricks make the perfect combo to take him to the top spots. On the ramps of Hiroshima, he left no room for his counterparts as he grabbed 1st place in the semifinal and the final. YASUTOKO TAKESHI Yasutoko comes from a family of Japanese rollerskaters both his parents and his brother are also professional. He got on his first rollers aged 3 and ever since has been extending his records. Known for his demanding and original technique, he s a five-time world champion and multiple gold medalist at the X Games undoubtedly a world legend of Roller. JULIEN CUDOT With his riding style as unpredictable as the way he manages his professional career, this winner of FWS 2016 and 2017 continues to electrify global competitions. He s at ease on Park and Street spots, and his incredible videos have made him recognised worldwide. Known for achieving huge air, providing surprises, and landing some of the best tricks on the first try, this Parisian rider hasn t finished challenging the FWS ranking yet. 23

He always makes time to enjoy events and to joke around with the press in interviews. He continues to develop his sport and the culture that goes with it. 2nd in Montpellier and 5th in Budapest, he took gold in Edmonton. For a great many BMX Flatland riders, he remains the man to beat. JORGE GOMEZ Originally from Madrid, Jorge «Viki» is a legend in BMX Flatland. Twice European champion and once world champion, he continues to break records. Famous for combos of sharp tricks, his years of experience are demonstrated through ultra-technical riding and have enabled him to start designing bicycles and co-found a company representing athletes in the discipline. ALEX JUMELIN Already quadruple world champion, Alex has been on the BMX Flatland world circuit for over 20 years. His creativity has given him an inimitable riding style which never fails to stand out. He is extremely involved in the expansion of his discipline and a year ago opened his own school near Montpellier, the FISE Flat Academy; here he relays his passion to a whole new generation of riders. 25

Passionate about it from a young age, he began to look around for a similar summer sport and took up skateboard a few years later. Supported in particular by his father, he has already notched up many victories in his category. With an incredible career at the age of only 17, he has notably won the 2016 JSF Japan Open and the AJSA Advance Cup. RICHARD TURY This laid-back 23-year-old Slovakian skateboarder, aka Riso, started to ride with some friends when he was 6 years old on some homemade ramps scattered around a basketball court. His talent rapidly took him to pro level, and he is famous for his variety of tricks. Ambitious about his career, he spends most of his time travelling to major international competitions and was placed 3rd in Montpellier last year. SORA NEGISHI Only 15 years old and already in the running to steal headline billing, it took just one stage in his country for this Japanese rider to do what was needed on the Park. 3rd position ensured his invitation to the French stop for which he will travel with his compatriot, Ikeda Daisuke, one of the best in the world. The Montpellier public are set to enjoy his personal, ultra-fluid style, signature of this young talent. 27

The idea for the switch in discipline came after seeing Dave Mirra at X-Games. Mehdi has now been riding for over 12 years and continues to compete for a place on the podium. His motto Go big or go home summarises the commitment shown in his runs and the clean line finishes which so often convince the judges. LUKAS KNOPF Nine years ago, this young German entered the world of Mountain Bike with a group of friends as motivated as him to spend all their free time riding. A native of the Paris suburbs, and heavily influenced by his artist father, Kopsky began graffiti in Equipped with a wide range of materials, he mixes styles in a slightly wacky, off-beat way. His work is characterised by spontaneity of line, a keen eye for detail and a rich pallette. He draws his influences from illustration, painting in letters, realism, hard-line graffiti, and comics to create rich and atypical compositions always original and fresh. Born in Montpellier in 1982, Louis Chalandon (aka Sirck) discovered graffiti in the 90s. He painted throughout Europe (especially Eastern) before deciding to embark on a sustainable project and returning to Montpellier in 2013 to open his Graffiti Shop. Always looking for a new challenge, he is heavily involved with promoting his world of passion and street art in Montpellier, the cosmopolitan city known for its artistic influence and numerous artists. Born in 1985, Graffiti enthusiast Laurent has painted in and around Montpellier since Self-taught, he was just 12 years old when the artwork on his sneakers was randomly spotted by someone who suggested he took up other projects. He realised his first official fresco at his college, Le Crès. Graffiti artist, graphic designer and more recently visual artist, he loves hybrid projects and collaborations, straddling different practices such as mapping or the augmented reality. Hien began painting in the early in Nantes where he learned the various disciplines of graffiti. After studying graphic arts, he settled in Montpellier in Always on the lookout for something new, he experimented in parallel with new media (illustration, 3D printing, installation, etc.) to develop his world, and presented his first solo exhibition in Today, he likes to work in quantity as this gives him the opportunity to vary the techniques between painting, sculpture, graphics, and production. 35

She is now a full-time rider, dividing her time between training, travelling to competition, college classes, and having as much fun as possible while riding. As a brand ambassador she is extremely active on social media, and is working hard to increase women s visibility on the international BMX Freestyle scene. MACARENA PEREZ, AGE 21 - CHL BMX FREESTYLE PARK This 20-year-old Chilean athlete loves riding wooden Parks as much as she loves shredding dirt tracks. She s passionate about BMX Freestyle in her home country and travels the world promoting her sport and engaging with fans. With all her travel, and by riding hard, she is proving a break-out athlete. Her powerful riding style rocked the FWS 2017 tour and there is no doubt that she has a bunch of new tricks up her sleeve to create surprises on the 2018 tour. ANALIA ZACARIAS, AGE 28 - ARG BMX FREESTYLE PARK With a guitar, a bass, drum sticks or a BMX in her hands, this Argentinian rider has too much energy to focus on just one passion. Between her riding sessions, she is also a student, and it seems that sending positive vibes to the world is her life mission. Highly interested in transmitting her incredible motivation to others, she trains hard to pave the way and provide inspiration to the next generation of female BMX riders. AURÉLIE GODET, AGE 13 - FRANCE WAKEBOARD The dynamic and determined 13-year-old Aurélie Godet already has the spirit and skills of a champion. This is the aura she gives off when she competes, often against older riders. The youngest athlete at FISE 2014, her age did not prevent her finishing a well-deserved 5th in the women s Wakeboard event. The Montpellier public will be out in force this year to support their favourite! MANON DERRIEN, AGE 25 - FRANCE ROLLER FREESTYLE Originally from Bordeaux, Manon is one of the best riders on the world Roller scene. For the past 8 years, she has cut fast and fluid runs on the track and rapidly gained a place on the international circuit. She won FISE Montpellier in 2010 and 2011, took 3rd place in Winterclash in 2013 and 2nd place at Barcelona Extreme in

Hiroshima and Jeddah were added to FWS 2018, hosting alongside Budapest, Edmonton, Chengdu, and of course Montpellier. From now on, FWS will include 4 official, certified world cups of UCI (International Cycling Union): BMX Freestyle Park World Cup, UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Cup, WS Roller Freestyle Park World Cup, and FIG Parkour World Cup for which Montpellier represents a stage. The City and the Métropole of Montpellier support this 100% action sports event which completely morphs with the DNA of the area both in Montpellier and throughout the world (recently providing an office in Chengdu within the EUPIC Tower). One of the most symbolic projects is undoubtedly the Park Gérard Bruyère in Baillargues. With an opening envisaged in 2021, 12 hectares will be dedicated to leisure and to extreme sports, in particular Wakeboard. There are about 50 sports events organised throughout the area. One is FISE Montpellier, which welcomes 592,000 visitors, 1,900 riders (pro & amateurs), 40 countries, and 400 journalists. There is the Wind Challenge of Gruissan the largest gathering of windsurfers in the world or the Natural Games which hosts almost 80,000 visitors in Millau over 4 days at the end of June. The region also supports the development of sports equipment, including skateparks, and the creation of a multi-slide park in Baillargues (Hérault). INVESTMENT BY REGION IN NEW SPORTS ACTIVITIES The Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée region promotes the development of new sports activities, oriented towards nature, leisure or well-being, such as Mountain Bike, BMX, Roller, Skateboard, Kitesurf, and Wakeboard. Perfectly adapted to the development of the area, these present the region with obvious tourism and economic benefits as well sporting ones. In 2018, the region will devote an overall budget of more than 23 million to support major events and in the area.
