3 From Our President Most people enjoy attending car shows. I began my love affair with beautiful cars in the 1960 s. I used to go to the Chicago Auto Shows in February when they were still held at the International Amphitheater on Halsted. We invariably ran into horrible driving conditions coming around the lake. Seeing the Corvette Mako Shark concept car made it all worthwhile. I was a teenage girl who knew nothing about the auto industry. That car, though. Oh, my it was captivating. The technical aspects of it completely escaped me. I just remember staring at it for as long as I could until I had to catch up with my Aunt Millie and Uncle Bill before I lost them forever in the huge crowds. Fast forward to the 1990 s. I was living in Lansing by then, and would go to the weekly summer car shows at USA Café. Dig those muscle cars! I fell in love all over again. When John and I joined CCCC, we enjoyed attending everyone s shows. Well, except for the really-cold early spring show at Charlton Park it snowed. Not heavily. Just enough for the announcer to tease the people who always bragged that they never drove their Corvettes in snow. I guess you should never say never. Hosting a car show is a lot of work. You can t argue that point. Everyone works so hard before, during, and after the shows then, we give the money away. And, we re not unique. There are so many car clubs (Corvette and metal car) that do the same thing over and over again. Car people are good people we all care about our communities. As our website states: We joined for the car. We stay for the people. As you travel this summer attending shows, you might want to think about taking a trip to St. Joe, MI, on August 8 th. They will host the 2015 Lake Bluffs Concours d Elegance of Southwest Michigan. This is an invitational show, so every vehicle is spectacular. An unusual entry this year is a replica of the 1954 Chevrolet Corvette-Corvair. That s not a typo. Apparently, GM created this concept car for the 1954 Motorama Traveling Show. They were considering a fastback version of the newly-introduced Corvette. This model was created to test public opinion. The original concept car was destroyed. Must be the public didn t warm up to it. Since our weather in getting warmer, let s have fun at car shows. While you re at it, remember to save the wave. Sandy Bechtel News for Members Editor s Notes: June is the month for Bloomington Gold. This year it s at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and promises to be a must attend event. If you re an Indy 500 race fan, the event is located right on the infield and the Saturday evening cruise will begin there. Auto crossing is a fun way to enjoy the capabilities of your corvette. In the July issue of Corvette Magazine there is an entire section devoted to auto crossing with some great pointers. I ve included flyers of some great low speed auto cross events coming up in June and July. For you LED light fans, this month s tech tips has a great mod for you C5 owners. Check it out. Drive safely. Editor Our CCCC Sponsor: Bud Kouts Chevrolet is the official sponsor of Capital City Corvette Club and is one of the area's finest Chevrolet dealers. June 2015

12 Tech Tips and Mods LED Lights Replacing turn signal, DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) and interior incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs is a nice mod to upgrade your corvette lighting. LED bulbs draw very little power, last nearly forever (30k+ hours), are readily available and relatively inexpensive (online). However, there is one problem you will encounter when replacing the turn signal bulbs; hyper-flashing. Hyper-Flash Fix Changing to LED turn signal bulbs creates an issue called hyper flash. The low current draw of the LEDs appears like an open connection in the flasher circuit and causes the flasher control to cycle at a high speed to indicate a burned out bulb. There are 2 ways to fix this (1) install a LED designed flasher (C5 or older) or (2) add a load resistor in parallel with the turn signal bulb note: resistors get very hot). Sources tell me the BCM controls the flash rate on a C6. On a C5 the flasher circuit is combined with the 4 way emergency flasher, so the turn signal flasher circuit can be separated from the emergency flasher circuit. To accomplish this you need a bypass harness with LED flasher (picture at right). The part is available online at suppliers such as Corvette Central. LED DRL Mod If you like the look of newer vehicles with the string of LED running lights, here s a mod that you may like for your C5. First you need to purchase a right and left hand replacement turn signal assembly and 2 strings of LED lights (both available on Amazon). Although you could modify your existing assemblies, I d save them in case you want to switch back. Next, referring to the photos, drill a group (12) of holes for the LED lights. It s easier than it sounds. A metal template should be used as a guide for hole locations. Install the LED sting into the holes and glue in place. Now the tricky part. The LED bulb strings will not tolerate a voltage much over 12 volts. They tend to burn out or start flickering. To solve this you ll need to wire in a DC to DC voltage regulator IC in series with the power connection. Use a LM7810 or LM7812 and heat sink (see photo) available from Amazon or similar supplier. Wiring is fairly straight forward. Items needed; a soldering iron, heat shrink tubing and connector. A wiring diagram can be found on the Internet. Installation is somewhat tedious. It requires removing the head light assembly to access the retaining screws (2), spring, turn signal bulb and side marker bulb. Using a water proof connector, splice into the existing turn signal wires. Remove the existing assembly and replace with the new assembly.
