2 JULY 2012 TWIN STATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 PRESIDENT S REPORT by Ed Miller Finally, after last month s tragedy, I can give everyone some GREAT news. I am sure most already know, but Jeff Haefke received a new lung last Sun., July 2. Matt and Jeff Jr. have kept me posted, and everything seems to be going great. I guess he will have another 6-7 weeks of stay in Cleveland, to make sure that all is going well. Keep him in your prayers, and as I am sure Ron Thompson, who received a heart transplant 3+ years ago would agree, Organ donors save lives! Without clicking that donor box on your driver s license, none of this happens. We had a really great turnout for our club night at Sharon. A lot of people stopped and talked to me and Dave about our charity kart raffle, and purchased tickets. Some didn t realize that the kart is an actual racing kart, not a yard kart. It was built by Rex Martin of Rex-O-Flex Chassis in Girard. His late father John was the mastermind behind most of the cars that Bob Blaney drove to many victories. The motor was built by Don Miller (no relation) of Southington. So whoever wins this, will have a local connection to get work done once raced. Remember, this is for charity, so please help us out! Many of the board will have tickets for purchase from this week on. Pictures will be up on the site this week. It was great as usual going back to Expo this past week. As a kid, I spent so much time in those stands, and was always so well behaved cheering for Butch! (right Matt Wertz, lol) The groove that they use on the front straight still amazes me, clear out by the flagstand. That track is still wicked fast, and if you don t respect it, it will bite you. I turned my very first laps on it, so I guess it will always be special. I sure wish the car count would pick up, but I understand it is in the middle of the week, and most, especially in the e-mods and stocks, don t even have a gear for the big 5/8 oval anymore. Now for the negative. Many of you may have seen my rant on Facebook about safety equipment, or lack of it. Six late model drivers at Expo, and maybe more in the other classes that I didn t realize, wore no racing gloves. I am sure a few are probably sick and tired of me going on and on about this, but frankly, I don t care! Witnessing the Benner/Belik/Kromer/Adkins fire tragedy was something that I still think about every day since Now with the word of Cowboy s sprint car accident at Lernerville last Friday, and the fire there two years ago that ended Charlie Holben s career, someone PLEASE tell me why drivers still think it can t happen to them! If you can t afford the proper safety equipment, please do not race... it only takes once, and no matter how well a car is constructed, it CAN happen. Remember to keep an eye on our updated site. Now that my late night evenings are freeing up just a little, it will allow for me to do two things. For one, I can clean up my diaster area of a sign shop, and I can get with my son Brett, and our webmaster Paul, to get some pictures up on the site, both new and old. If anybody out there would like to contribute photos, please do so. I want to make this a site you want to keep coming back to. Remember, Also, if you want your newsletter ed, click on the box on the site. It is very easy to do. July 14 is a day that I be a day to never forget for the Pittsburgh area fans, as well as anyone that attended races at Heidelberg. After much, and I repeat MUCH work done by Dave Kohler and the gang down in Ross Twp. where the track was located, a historical road marker will be dedicated at the location of the greatest speedway, in my opinion, that ever existed. I hope for a great turnout of retired drivers and fans who attended races there from It didn t look like it would happen, due to the fact that all the credit for the plaque was going to go to the fact that the last outdoor Ringling Bros.-Barnum Bailey circus was held on the property. But it has become reality, although I would rather see the speedway sitting there, still racing. Festivities will take place at 2pm, out by Rt. 50 where King s Restaurant is located. Heidelberg Raceway and Sports Arena forever!!!! In closing, I would like to wish one of my two favorite racers, my grandaughter Racey Lacey, a very happy 12th birthday, and also congratulate my little grandaughter Indy Lindy, or as I refer to her at the games as Lil Sangy, on her softball championship for 8-9 year olds in the Meander League. Both are now playing softball, and my shop door shows it. Lacey is practicing pitching, and my door (not to mention my leg) is showing battle scars from that big yellow ball! Lindy went 4 for 4, 2 rbi s, 1 run scored in her championship game. Sorry it isn t racing, but I had to brag a little!!! So until next month, see YINZ at the races! Ed

4 JULY 2012 TWIN STATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 MEMBERSHIP REPORT FOR JULY 2012 Hello again Twin Staters. It seems like 3 weeks ago we were wishing that everyone was keeping warm, now the hope is that everyones keeping cool in this record breaking heat. The weatherman says it s the hottest it s been in this area for over 20 some years. I m just keeping the air conditioner company for a while. It ll be really hard to get any water into the local dirt tracks with this heat, for sure. Our membership numbers are dropping, a little, probably because it s too hot to join, or renew memberships, I guess. Maybe we can have a 3 month membership drive, & give out a nice Twin State Jacket to the person who signs up the most new members. I ll donate the Jacket. I ll present it to the E/Board at the Meeting. But, the newbys would have to be NEW MEMBERS, or Ones who have been Out of the Club for at least 4 months, which would translate to 3 months, because they had 1 month as a Grace Period. Come to the meeting, or read me next month to see if we get approval. We now have 662 regular members, we have 32 Honorary, & 5 Media, for a Grand Total of 699.With renewals coming in, & non-renewals coming off the numbers will fluctuate some, but we re pretty darn close. And I m almost done sending out letters to LIFETIMERS Explaining the 2 year policy. But it will streamline renewal efforts in the future. Thanks. Report done 7/6/2012. Dick Berry, at your service. SHARON CLUB PICNIC NEWS A Big Twin State thanks, to all of you that gave us notice that you would be attending our recent Picnic at Sharon Speedway, June 2nd. Plus, a great big thanks to those of you that braved the threatening skies to be there, & those folks that helped setting up the food tables. The food was great, & there was so much we ran out of table space, & used chairs. It s a shame I ll have to wait another year to get more raisin cookies. Too bad the rain came, & races were cancelled at 4:30pm MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION DUES: Single Adult (18 & over) $18.00 Husband & Wife $ Children (6 thru 17) With Adult $5.00 Single Senior Citizen $10.00 Husband & Wife (Senior) $13.00 Children (6 thru 17) without adult - $8.00 Senior Citizen (55 or over)$10.00 Lifetime Member (existing member 75 or older) Free Name(both names for cards) Phone Address City State Zip Children Members: Name Birth date Age Name, Birth date, Age Name, Birth date, Age Check Here if Senior Citizen over 55...Check Here if Driver Car# Track Division Circle One New Member or Renewal $5.00 charge for lost membership cards.
