2 MAY 2014 TWIN STATE NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 PRESIDENT S REPORT by Matt Wertz With our May meeting, we will be heading over to Western Pennsylvania to give our Keystone members a more convenient venue. Our usual meeting place, The Manor in Austintown, has been working out great and they are a pleasure to work with. A long-reserved bowling banquet there set for May 20 gave us a chance to return to The Golden Corral in Hermitage. We ve met a few times in the past at The Golden Corral, and we ve had good attendance with several new faces. Hope that trend continues this month! Join us May 20 at The Golden Corral, 1025 N. Hermitage Rd.(Rt. 18), Hermitage, PA. Racing season is finally underway despite a stubborn blooming spring. And with it, so are our Club Nights. Thanks to all who help out with preparations and award presentations at our host tracks. Our first two Club Nights were Midvale Speedway and Goodhope Speedway. Up next are Mercer Raceway Park on Saturday, May 17, Dog Hollow Speedway on Friday, June 6, and Lorain County Speedway on Saturday, June 14. Any member wishing to help out just call one of our officers or board members. Jack Coley, as usual, has been great in Club Night prep. Thanks also to Dale Miles, who headed up to Cuyahoga Community College for their Days of Speed and Cruise In on May 1. Club member Dennis Capek, an instructor at CCC in Automotive Tech, provided a table for us and Dale did some good PR for Twin State. Dale talked to a lot of people, and saw lots of interesting cars while there. As some of you know, I have been sidelined a bit with some health issues. Thanks go out to all who stepped up to help and offer words of encouragement - Dale Miles, Jim Balentine Sr., Jim Balentine Jr., Jack Coley, Gene Leamer, Dick Berry, Tonja Pemberton and Kenzie Ambrose. Hopefully I will be back at 100% soon. And I know all our members and track personnel are taking an active role in helping with our club Yearly Awards now that racing is underway. Whether taking notes mentally or on a notepad, your input will be invaluable at the end of the season when nominations are asked for Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Driver, Hard Luck Driver, Sportsmanship, Owner, and Driver of the Year. On behalf of my family I would like to thank our racing family for the s, facebook messages, calls and support after the death of my grandmother who was my dad s mother on Wednesday April 30th at the age of 102. Although it was expected to eventually happen it still is a hard thing to go through. Special thanks to Rev. Bill Beck for his famous words of wisdom, and to Lernerville Speedway and Eric for making us feel at home last Friday night during this difficult time...jim

Diz Dean suggested that we say the pledge of allegiance to our flag at the beginning of our meetings. Sunshine: A get-well card was sent to Helen Shook who was in the Hospital, A sympathy card was sent to John Codner on the loss of his Aunt. A new committee will be formed by Makenzie Ambrose and Gene Leamer to procure awards for club nights. It was suggested that we use photo paper, framed instead of plaques to save money on plaques Press kits for tracks will include 10 Frisbees, 2 free memberships and a letter about the club. Don & Jess Kennedy gave us a price quote on small Frisbees of $16.00 for 72 Frisbees or around $.22 each. Twin-State shirts & hats are available from Jack Coley. Jim Balentine SR. made announcements of coming events. May 17 will be free admission at Sharon Speedway. May 17th is also our club night at Mercer Raceway Park. There was a fire in Mike Marano s sprint car at Mercer Raceway Park. Bill Vance helped to get Mike out of car and put out the fire. Dick Berry sent a to Tonja Pemberton about not being able to attend all of the meetings due to his health. We aren t going to let him go because he does a good job as membership secretary. 4 MAY 2014 TWIN STATE NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 IN MEMORIAM BILL THOMAS-73 years old-passed away April Bill was a champion Hall of Fame Sprint car owner who had Ralph Quarterson drive for him in the early 1960s and then remained with Hall of Famer Lou Blaney who wheeled the Thomas sprint to the Williams Grove Natl Open win in In 1978 the duo purchased a Toby Tobias Modified and rewrote the local Modified division history books with over 300 Mod wins and over 180 Sprint wins total. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE INFIELD by Jim Balentine Jr. finally after a long,cold winter the local racing season has begun with alot of exciting racing...but mother nature has kept things chilly as most tracks have run in mid 30 temps around the region with crowds and car counts lower than normal for some of the openers but hopefully things will improve as it gets warmer... MERCER opened the local season on a Sunday rain date with DENNIS LUNGER-CRATE, GREG SATTERLEE-SUPER LM, RICH MICHAEL JR-EMOD and CHRIS SCHNEIDER-STOCK. ROD GEORGE,DANNY HOLTGRAVER and JACK SODEMAN JR have won 410 SPRINT features and ERIC GABANY,FRANK GUIDACE AND KYLE FINK have topped the 358 class..andy FEIL and MIKE BAUER have won 305 SPRINT features...curt BISH and RUSTY MOORE won STOCK features PPMS was the next to open with a NDRL SUPER LM $10,000 to win show on a rare Thursday with STEVE FRANCIS defeating BRIAN BIRKHOFER for the win..ryan MONTGOMERY-CRATES and STEVE DIX- ON-EMODS also took wins...alex FEREE and JOHN MOLLICK-SUPER LM, NICO DABECCO and JOSH HOLTGRAVER-CRATES have picked up 2014 wins. SHARON has 2 nights in the books with ALAN DELLINGER and DENNIS LUNGER JR.-CRATE, REX KING SR and REX KING JR-BIG BLOCK MODS, JOEL WASTON 2 for 2 in the EMODS, PAUL DAVIS and MIKE CLARK-STOCKS and JEREMY DOUBLE and STEVE BURNS-ECONOMODS...the first RUSH CRATE SPORTSMAN race was held at SHARON with JORDAN ECK taking the win over 10 cars. LERNERVILLE has two races in the books with DANNY HOLTGRAVER and CARL BOWSER- SPRINTS,RUSS KING and ALEX FEREE-SUPER LM and BRAIN SWARTZLANDER who picked up his 83rd LERNERVILLE MODIFIED checkered and is the all time leader in the division and Rex King Jr. WAYNE COUNTY has two races completed with RYAN MARKHAM holding off BRAD MALCUIT in a nailbiter in the SUPER LM and won again Sat night and BRAD HAUDENSCHILD winning his 1st ever at the Orrville,Oh track over ROB CHANEY and then again Sat night over Broc Martin. MIDVALE opened their gates with BRYANT SMITH-SUPER LM, LEE McCREERY-ECONO MODS, GARY HOOPINGARNER-STOCKS, KYLE GROVE and BRENT SCHREFFLER-COMPACTS picking up wins.
