2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The Budgerigar Society of South Africa is 82 years old this year and this is our 77 th National Show and for the first time ever there will be five judges from around the world officiating. The judges are Christian Back from Germany, Grant Findlay from the UK, Jim Fletcher from Australia, Carlos Ramôa from Portugal and Bob Wilson from America. As you can see a very wide spectrum and also a wonderful opportunity for all our judges to compete on the show bench this year. The Bloemfontein venue is also the site for the 25 th Annual World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) meeting and so it is going to be quite an interesting time having all these delegates from around the world and so we need to do our part by supporting our National Show both with numbers and quality birds. South Africa has always had birds that could favourably compete internationally and so we need to show as many as possible. We have been assured that the Sleeper Stone Estate has been upgraded and so hopefully we will all be satisfied. No show happens without an awful lot of work. In this regard though we have some willing members who do a sterling job, but help is always needed and so if you would like to volunteer your services please contact our Administrator in this regard. I would like therefore to thank all those involved with the show as well as all those who have sponsored prizes as it is truly appreciated by all the members. I sincerely hope to see as many of you as possible at this year s National Show at the end of July. We might not have the biggest membership internationally but traditionally South Africans have been good supporters of shows. Let this year s National be no exception. Your President Ian Bleasdale

3 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN To each and every member, their families, friends and interested parties It gives me great pleasure in writing this message for the forthcoming 2018 National Championship Show to be held in Bloemfontein from the 27 th to 29 th July There has been a great emphasis on socializing at the National and we will be honoured to have as many of the country s breeders attending this show, not only to see wonderful birds, but also to meet old and new friends that make up this exciting hobby of ours. We are honoured in hosting the WBO annual conference during the show and will have 5 overseas judges judging the show! Over the last 3 years we have managed to increase the numbers of fanciers attending which has resulted in a great social gathering and this year the overseas fanciers that attend will add extra prestige. Come and enjoy this special vibe! Let s show the overseas visitors the true spirit and passion of the South African hobby and arrive in our masses and load the benches with our birds! We also want to express our appreciation towards those members who put in a lot of hard work and give up a lot of their valuable time to make this show the success we are certain it is going to be. 4 MEET OUR JUDGES (in alphabetical order) I have always been fascinated by animals as long as I can remember. My first budgie I already got as a gift at my third birthday. At the age of 10 years my parents had built an aviary for me and I was able to make my first breeding experiences of budgies and parakeets. At this time I was very interested in genetics and have bred most of the varieties of budgerigars and cockatiels. I have made my first contact with show budgerigars and the AZ-Club in Karlsruhe at the age of 17 with the support of my good breeding friend Marc Zieher. In the same year 1992 I became a member of the AZ and of the AZ-Club Karlsruhe. What initially started as a hobby with a spontaneous visit of a breeders meeting in Karlsruhe has with an increasing enthusiasm for Show Budgerigars become a passion. So I got addicted to the world of Show Budgerigars By building a new aviary I only have focused on breeding showbudgerigars that became a very important part of my life. Today I can proudly say that over the years I have learned a lot of useful things about our beautiful hobby by continuous exchange of information and experiences with this breeder friends in Karlsruhe - and I'm still learning. Christian Back (Germany) Since 2002 I have been working with joy active in the executive committee of the AZ-Club Karlsruhe. Today I strongly recommend all beginners in our hobby to join such group dynamics in a club like Karlsruhe. All further details about our club you will find at our homepage at I also became an AZ-DWV judge in I can consider myself fortunate since many years that I have been asked to judge in many countries, for instance Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Pakistan and Bahrain. One of my most wonderful experiences was judging in Brazil in the year The friendships I have made on these trips have been the most rewarding experience in this hobby. Since 2011 I have been also involved as a committee member of the German Budgerigar Association (AZ-DWV), where I assumed the position of the first chairman since Among many other things I'm especially responsible for the execution and the procedures of the German National Show in Kassel or the European Championship in Karlsruhe as well as the further education of all AZ-DWV judges. 5 MEET OUR JUDGES Grant was born in 1955 and is married to Maggie and they reside in Alyth which is a small town near Dundee on the east coast of Scotland, United Kingdom. He has been interested in budgies since the age of 10 when he did a school project on his father s hobby of breeding budgies and has been hooked ever since! He has a small establishment of 9 breeding pairs and keeps around 70 birds and is in partnership with Nick Flavell and between them they have a stock of over 200 birds. His stud consists mainly of Normals, Spangles, Crests, Recessive Pieds and Texas Clearbodies with a few Opalines, Cinnamons and Lacewings. His lines are mainly based on Mannes (Germany) R & M Miller, Huxley & Marchant and Reaney (all UK). Grant Findlay (UK) Grant is currently the full time Administrator of The Budgerigar Society (BS) in the UK which has around 2,500 members. He has been involved in the Society for the past 25 years and for 10 of those was Chairman and also served as Vice Chairman for 4 years before that. He was President of the Society in the year 2000 and has been awarded the highest BS award the Silver Bird for services to the hobby. He took up the Society Admin role in 2013 after taking early retirement from a 40 year career in Banking. One of his favourite parts of the hobby is judging and has been judging since his 20 s. As well as judging all the major shows in the UK he has judged abroad many times including Canada, USA, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Kuwait, Turkey, Israel, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and South Africa on a couple of occasions. He is looking forward to seeing the progression the hobby and birds have made in South Africa since his last visit and to renewing friendships and making new friendships over the show weekend. 6 MEET OUR JUDGES The Budgerigar has been very much a part of our lives as Judy and I have been breeding and showing Budgerigars for 47 years and both had them as a hobby in our early teenage years. We have followed the National Shows around Australia each year since 1988 and only missed one show due to my illness in I passed the inaugural ANBC s judging examination in 1990 and was the Judges Committee Coordinator for quite a number of years and from July 2012 to 2015 ANBC Secretary. I have previously had National judging appointments in 1992, 1996, 2004, 2011and In 2013 I judged at the World Budgerigar Show in Forli Italy and England in August Judy & I breed approximately 200 young birds a year. After the completion of each breeding season we carry a stud of approximately 350 birds. Recent achievements: 2013 from 4 Shows we won all 4 Young Bird Diplomas and 3 Champion Bird of Show awards with a team of birds from our stud. Jim Fletcher (Australia) 2014 from 4 Shows we won 3 Young Bird Diplomas and 3 Champion Bird of Show awards including 2 Champion Opp. Sex in Show and 2 Young Opp. Sex in Show Awards. Results from previous year s National 2nd 3rd in Grey Green & 3rd in Yellow Face sections from 4 Shows, we won 2 Young Bird Diplomas and 2 Champion Bird of Show awards including 1 Champion Any Age, 3 Champion Opp. Sex in Show and 1 Young Opp. Sex in Show Awards. 2016from 3 shows, we won 1 Champion Open Young Bird, 1 Champion Young Opp. Sex in Show, 1 Champ. Any Age and 2 Champion Opp. Sex in Show. For 2017 from 2 shows to date we have won 1 Young Bird Diploma. Our most memorable award would be the National Show at Rockhampton 2010, when our Normal Light Green Cock won the normal green class and the accolades we received for the quality of this bird. He and his siblings have now become the key bloodline in our current line of birds. The varieties we breed are: Normal, Cinnamons, Opalines, Spangles, Yellow Face (Aust. Golden Face & Yellow Face), Dominant Pied, Lacewings, Clearwings and Australian White Caps. Regarding to the Australian White Cap (latest mutation) we are currently working on a program with other breeders around Australia of consolidation and improvement of this new mutation. Improvement to date is very rapid, we are lucky they breed exactly like the Spangle variety, we now have them being bred in all States and in multiple studs. ( will send you some pics if you would like some) Judy and I are very proud of what we have achieved with our birds over many years as the quality of the bird is very much consistent throughout the stud. 7 MEET OUR JUDGES My name is Carlos Fernando Ramôa, I am 47 years old and I live in a small city by the sea side on the north of Portugal called Povoa de Varzim. I have been keeping Budgerigars all my life since I was 7 years old. I keep around 150 Budgerigars, and usually try to breed with 20 couples each year. I am interested in all aspects of the Hobby and I like to keep several varieties of Budgies, not only Normals and other dominant varieties but also to experiment with Crests, Clearings, Slates, Anthracites and other. I am particularly fond of Spangles and I try to show as much as I can (and maybe more than I should ) I joined my local cage bird club in 1982 and I joined their board in 1992, only to become President in Carlos Ramôa (Portugal) In 2004 together with some friends, I founded the Portuguese Budgerigar Society, called SPO, and the following year we joined the WBO-World Budgerigar Organization and I have been attending the annual WBO meeting ever since as the delegate from Portugal. In 2010 I was elected as the WBO Vice Chairman and in 2016 I had the privilege of being elected as the Chairman until today. This is a position that gives great pleasure and high pride, since Budgerigars are one the biggest passions of my life. On the Show bench I am a humble winner of not too many awards, but enjoy a lot in showing my birds and judging or visiting local, national or even World Shows. I am a great enthusiast of the idea of the WBO World Show and I am very happy that this event is increasingly being acknowledged by breeders all over the world. I am very happy to be in South Africa and even more to have been invited to judge your prestigious show. May I wish you all an excellent show and 2018 WBO Congress. I would like to pass on a message of encouragement and trust in the future of our hobby: we have a very honorable and interesting hobby and we should always be proud to be called bird breeders. 8 MEET OUR JUDGES I first raised budgerigars as a teenager in Australia starting in 1959 when I was given a pair as a present. Soon after I joined a local budgie club and was soon hooked on the hobby. I have enjoyed several lifetimes in the hobby, first as a teenager, then after college, again in New Zealand where I spent time before moving to USA in 1977, and later in America. In 2011 I returned to the hobby after a break of nine years for business and personal reasons. My 49W budgies have won many shows in the Midwest USA, but perhaps my greatest thrill came when a greygreen youngster finished second best in show at the 1991 All American in Indianapolis with 1056 entries. I have a preference for normals, cinnamons and spangles, but am more focused on the overall quality of a bird than on specific varieties. Bob Wilson (America) While I enjoy the competition of attending shows to see how my birds measure up, I prefer the fellowship with other breeders and the challenge in the breeding room to constantly improve the overall quality of my stud. Whenever possible I visit other breeders to check out their birds, management techniques and how they achieve their goals in the hobby. I have held office in both local and national budgerigar societies and am currently Judges Administrator with The Budgerigar Association of America. In addition to shows across USA, including The All American and Grand National twice, I have been fortunate to also judge shows in England, Belgium and Egypt. My enjoyment and success in the hobby is a tribute to the great mentors I have had over the years Frank Gardner in Australia, Eric Monks in New Zealand, Eric Peake and Alf Ormerod from England, Don Langell in America, and more recently Daniel Leutolf and Maarten Heylen. These Master Breeders have been a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to continually develop my budgerigars while staying as close as possible to nature. Show cages that do not comply to the new standard as detailed in Appendix F and G annexed to the Rules framed in terms of the Constitution of the BSSA (Volume 2), will not be accepted. 2. Wooden Show Cage 2.1. All exhibits benched with unmarked fingerdraw drinkers fitted to the show cages between the 1st and 2nd vertical wires on the left hand side when facing the cage and resting on the 2nd horizontal bar from the bottom of the wire front!!! 2.2. The back of the show cage is the opposite side to the BSSA logo printed on the left bottom of the tray. 4. ONLY PLAIN CLEAR WATER WITH NO ADDITIVES MUST BE USED IN DRINKERS BEFORE JUDGING. 5. Show cage floors shall be covered with only a combination of three (3) seeds namely Canary seed, White millet seed and Jap millet seed PLUS optionally Oats or Grouts and no sand or sawdust may be used. No coloured water will be allowed in the drinkers. BIO-SECURITY The F10 BIO-Security precautions as communicated in the BSSA Minutes of 4 May 2006 has been adjusted: Due to the new show cages having limited area which can be sprayed without wetting the birds, this procedure has been adjusted. Wire show cages don t need to be sprayed before benching. However all staging namely; show staging, designated staging area, judges stands, benching area stands as well as any benching and steward tables and chares in the venue to be sprayed before birds enter the hall. Judges wipes must be provided and senior stewards to ensure judges make use of the wipes as have been done in the past. DIRECTIVES 1. Showing of Birds with Two Rings. The Constitution Volume 2 page 9 Clause states Exhibits wearing a split celluloid ring will be permitted and all exhibits shall wear the closed ring of the exhibiting member or in the case of partnerships, the closed ring of one of the members or of the partnership. The Constitution Volume 2 page 9 Clause states No exhibit shall wear more than one closed ring. The showing of birds with two closed rings is prohibited. The showing of birds with one closed ring and one closed ring which has been split is prohibited. The split ring cannot contain any writing but may be any of the 72 different colour combinations.

20 REGULATIONS 1. The Show Rules and Show Schedule of the Budgerigar Society of South Africa shall apply. 2. Birds entered in wrong classes are entirely the responsibility of the exhibitor. Entries unaccompanied by the correct entry fee will not be accepted. Entry fees will be forfeited in respect of birds not benched. NO ALTERATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED ON ENTRY FORMS AFTER RECEIPT BY THE SHOW SECRETARY BUT ADDITIONAL ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE IF ACCOMPANIED BY THE RELEVANT FEES. 3. The officials will ensure that all exhibits are properly cared for but will not, however, be responsible for any loss of, or damage to the birds or cages that may occur for any reason whatsoever either during the show or in transit to and from the show. Whilst extreme care and attention will be paid to the exhibits whilst at the show, exhibits are entered at owners risk. 4. No person shall be allowed to remove from the staging any exhibit except with the permission and in the presence of the Show Manager. This rule will apply throughout the duration of the show. 5. Photographing of exhibits is permissible but under no circumstances may the exhibit or the show cage be touched or removed from the staging. The official photographer may transfer the exhibit into a photographic cage but only in consultation with the Show Manager who will delegate a steward to assist. 6. Only show officials and members of the BSSA Management Committee will be allowed to move freely in the hall whilst judging is in progress. However, an area will be made available for spectators from where proceedings could be observed with the clear understanding that they will not be allowed anywhere else in the hall. 7. Smoking and the use of alcoholic drinks in the vicinity where judging is taking place is strictly forbidden. Anybody contravening this regulation will be reported to the Show Manager and the BSSA Representative and will be removed from the show venue. DE-BENCHING 8. Exhibitors are to collect their de-benching sheets from the Benching/De-benching Manager on Sunday morning. 9. At the announcement that de-benching may commence, birds are to be collected and an orderly queue formed by exhibitors with their birds and de-benching sheets at any exit point for booking out. 10. Exhibitors are requested NOT to remove any exhibit from the staging prior to the official announcement that de-benching may commence.
