2 COURTSIDE BUZZ Page 2 Presidents Welcome On behalf of our Patron Ros Bates and each and every volunteer within HDNA, welcome to season To our players, umpires, coaches, managers, to our NetSetGo beginners, and all of our spectators, parents and supporters, I and the HDNA Executives wish you all a year of participation and development, filled with enjoyment, challenges and successes. We welcome our two new volunteers Carol (Saturday NetSetGo Convener) and Nikki (Coaching Convener) to out netball family. Our opening day was exciting where each club participated in a Cheer Off with Palm Beach being the ultimate winners. HDNA s Charity Day will be held on the 20th of August and proceeds will be going to Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Please remember if dressing up make sure you are wearing appropriate items that are not dangerous when playing your game. Happy to say that with the help of all of the duty clubs the Crowd Control has had an enormous impact with the players, spectators, coaches and umpires HDNA s aim is to have a zero tolerance environment and a fun, social and happy one. Please remember to thank and respect all of your Club and association volunteers who enthusiastically support you and your sport everyday throughout the season (and unknown to many, much of the time between seasons). Without the extensive involvement and skills this competition would not be successful as it is. Thank you to Marguerite Healey from PRD Nationwide for her efforts to keep you sun safe with an endless supply of sunscreen. Olivia Hall, Mudgeeraba Senior Association Badge: Kim Kirkpatrick, Palm Beach Encouragement Certificate: Kelsey Hargraves, Tamborine Mountain Jim s Mowing Sponsorship 2016 I am pleased to announce a $5000 sponsorship agreement with Jim s Mowing for Saturday Junior Umpires This sponsorship agreement will see a range of activities around the training and development of junior umpiries, as well as the appointment of HDNA Umpire Coaches to support the clubs on Saturday s. 50 junior umpires will receive a 2016 Umpire Welcome Pack consisting of a white umpire polo shirt, whistle, 2016 Rule Book and HDNA coaching book. This investment will also see educational courses offered to all umpires throughout the season.

Jo Dawes (Pizzey Park) Janet Barth (Phoenix) Lauren Pryde (Tamborine Mountain) Le Vonne Whaagna (Five Rivers) Maria Perkins (Tallebudgera) Carly Burge (Palm Beach) Georgia Bell (Mudgeeraba) New Netball Rules 2016 All netball competitions and events held in Australia from the grassroots to the elite will play under the new Official Rules of Netball from January It is important to remember that we are all in a 12 month transitional period as umpires, players and coaches all learn the new rules and what it looks like on court. We ask for you patience and understanding during this period. Rule of the Week Will be advertised on our Facebook/website pages each week. Please encourage your members to join our social media page as we constantly post relevant information from coaching tips, to umpiring rules, to all sorts of information relating to netball at HDNA. Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 5 HDNA Representative Umpires After receiving a large number of Expression of Interest from umpires, we decided to accept these nominations to create a pool of umpires we can call on throughout the 2016 Rep Season. Umpires for State Events will be selected based on their individual commitment and performance shown leading up to the major State Events. Stroud Southern Cup Netball Competition 2016 The following umpires will be representing HDNA during this premier league competition at Somerset College every Thursday night - Carly Burge, Katisha Webb, Jo Dawes and Kimberley Seymour. Umpiring Sub-Committee 2016 Welcome to the 2016 umpire sub-committee of Jo Dawes, Renae Meyers and Sharlene Hall.

6 COURTSIDE BUZZ Page 6 Rep Rap by Julie Prendergast Our junior representative teams have been working hard preparing for this year s major carnivals with a speed and agility program run by Acceleration Australia. State Age is almost upon us and we will have 5 teams representing HDNA - 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 years. In August the same teams plus an Opens side will compete in the Country Carnival at Tweed Heads. Come along and cheer our teams we would love the support. Our 16 and 19 years premier league teams have been competing in the Stroud Cup. Both teams are competing well and we have had several of our players rewarded for their efforts with player of the week awards.

7 Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 7 Our Challenge teams will be making the trip north to Townsville to compete in September. We will be represented by 2 x 12, 13, 14 and 15 years teams. It certainly will be a warm time of year to be competing. I would like to thank all the hard work put in by the coaches, managers and players in preparing for these events and of course to all the parents for their support. There has been a competitions review by Netball Queensland and we will see quite a few changes to the representative competitions next year including changes to the major carnivals for junior representatives.

8 COURTSIDE BUZZ Page Suzuki State Carnival The Suzuki State Age Championships were held on the Gold Coast from 7th 9th July at one of our neighboring associations, Southcoast Netball Association. The weather for the weekend was perfect! All of our 5 teams played fantastic netball, they competed hard and had great results. Congratulations to the 13s team on coming Runners Up!! A big shout-out to our wonderful umpires who represented HDNA over the weekend.

MND Australia works in collaboration with the state MND associations to help Australians impacted by MND live better for longer. 10 COURTSIDE BUZZ Page 10 HDNA PLAYER PROFILE Sarah Ellis How long have you been playing netball for? I started playing when I was 4, in my older sisters under 6 s team, so for 14 years now. How long have you played representative netball for? The first year I was old enough to trial for rep, I was there! So, since I was twelve years old. Who have you played club netball for? I mainly played with Mudgeeraba, until my Moovers team decided to split and start our own independent club a couple of years ago, thanks to the real MVP which is Julie Prendergast. Who do you currently play with? I play for the Moovers and also Hinterland s Under 19 s Premier League Team.

11 Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 11 What is your favourite position? I m such an indecisive person, so it changes all the time. I guess it depends but it would predominantly swap between GA and GK. Do you coach or umpire as well as play? I used to umpire but I no longer do, due to other work and university commitments. What is your favourite thing about playing netball? It sounds super corny, but my favourite thing about playing netball would definitely be the people that I ve played and am currently playing with. There are so many incredible memories I have made with these people, it would be unfair to say that my love of the sport stems from anything else. What is the best netball experience you have had so far? I think the best netball experience I ve had is when I travelled to Sydney with the indoor Queensland netball team. It was such a great opportunity, experience and learning curb, which I believed really helped me to develop as a player. Also the fact that we won the whole competition made the trip a little better. What do you hope to accomplish with netball? I m not 100 percent sure. I guess I m happy to see where it takes me.

12 COURTSIDE BUZZ Page 12 NetSetGO NetSetGo News by Nikki Ross Well our 10 week skills and drills component of the NetSetGo program has finished, and we are now on to 5 weeks of game play. It has been such a treat to watch all our young children out early Saturday morning having fun. And that s what it is all about having fun! The first ten weeks of this program was aimed at introducing (for new players) and improving (for existing players) the basics which is footwork and passing. This is something that even the Firebirds and Diamonds do in their training on a regular basis and we cannot stress the importance of players getting the basics right. HDNA would like to thank and congratulate the coaches and parents that have embraced this program in the manner it is intended. Vicki Wilson What a treat it was for our Club Coaches to attend a clinic at HDNA by Vicki Wilson. This clinic focused on defence and it was so good to see so many of our coaches with their notebooks out taking notes and taking videos on their phones. It was easy to see Vicki s love of our game netball, and her enthusiasm and guidance on instructing our young developing players and getting them to be thinkers on the court rather than rely on underhanded tactics is one that HDNA wholeheartedly embraces.

13 Volume 1, Issue 3 Page 13 Gretel Tippett/Kim Ravillion Gretel and Kim absolutely love coming to HDNA, and with nearly 70 girls in attendance at their clinic over the school holidays it is easy to see why. This clinic was open to all ages and watching both Gretel and Kim display the same patience, openness and warmth to all of our HDNA girls was certainly something to make you want to beat your chest about. Love this sport!! They will be holding another clinic later in the year at HDNA so keep an eye out and make sure you don t miss out! Social Media If your girls aren t already onto it, the social media campaign Rethink Role Models run by Netball Australia & Samsung Australia is one to make sure they are aware of. As a sport, our ladies in the spotlight are absolute champs and role models that as parents, we all should be proud to encourage our children to follow! #ReThinkRoleModels #RiseAboveIt
