12 GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, MIKE FRATELLO President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced on December 2, 2004 at NBA veteran coach Mike Fratello had been named e Grizzlies seven head coach in team history. Fratello, 57, joined e Grizzlies as one of e NBA s most successful coaches in history, ranking 19 on e alltime wins list (572) and 21 st on e all-time games coached list (1,037). A 13-year coaching veteran, he had compiled a (.552) overall NBA record, qualifying for e NBA playoffs in nine of his 13 seasons as a head coach (20-34), wi an all-time playoff record of Fratello inherited a struggling Grizzlies squad at had opened e year 5-11, but quickly started to turn e season around wi a victory in his very first game as Memphis head coach wi a victory over Philadelphia. Under e direction of The Czar, e team went on to post eir longest winning streak of e season, winning six consecutive games from December 27 January 7. Memphis carried eir momentum roughout January, posting e most wins in e mon in franchise history, going 12-3, including an NBA best mark of 6-2 on e road. The Grizzlies efforts during e mon earned Fratello Coach of e Mon honors for e four time in his career, and first wi e Grizzlies. The team s 21-9 record in eir first 30 games under Fratello, was at e time tied for e seven best start under a head coach at took over mid or part-way rough e season. On March 4, 2005, Fratello reached yet anoer milestone, becoming just e 19 coach in NBA history to post 600 wins in his professional coaching career. The Grizzlies finished e year at 45-37, earning a spot in e playoffs for e second consecutive season, and second time in franchise history. Fratello began his NBA coaching career as an assistant coach wi e Atlanta Hawks ( ), before stepping into his first head coaching role when he and Brendan Suhr were named co-interim head coaches of e Hawks, replacing Hubie Brown 79 games into e season. In 1982, he joined e New York Knicks as an assistant coach for one season ( ) before returning to e Hawks as head coach in 1983 to lead Atlanta for seven seasons. During his seven-year stint, he compiled a winning record (.564), advancing to e playoffs in five seasons, including leading e Hawks to a Central Division title in His 324 regular season victories, 18 postseason wins and 577 games coached rank second among Hawks alltime franchise coaching lists. He set a franchise record for winning at least 50 games in four consecutive seasons ( ), earning 1986 NBA Coach of e Year honors after leading e Hawks to a record. In 1990, he left e sidelines to join e broadcasting boo for e first time in his career when he signed on to cover e NBA on NBC Sports for ree seasons ( ). In 1993, he returned to e coaching ranks to lead e Cleveland Cavaliers, compiling a regular season record and guiding his team to four post-season appearances during his six-year stint ( ).
