10 GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, MIKE FRATELLO Mike Fratello joined the Grizzlies on December 2, 2004, becoming the seventh head coach in franchise history. Fratello came to the Grizzlies as one of the NBA s most successful coaches in history, ranking 19 th on the all-time wins list and 21 st on the all-time games coached list when he joined the team. A 16-year coaching veteran, his teams have qualified for the NBA playoffs in 11 of his 16 seasons as a head coach. His success carried over immediately into his position with the Grizzlies. The team went 9-6 after he took over in December 2004, then went an incredible 12-3 in January 2005, earning Fratello the NBA s Western Conference Coach of the Month Award. He earned his 600 th career win as a head coach on March 4, 2005, only the 19 th coach all-time to reach the 600-win plateau. He finished out the regular season by guiding the Grizzlies to their second winning season, and second playoff appearance. His second season with the Grizzlies was equally impressive. With a roster that had been overhauled prior to the season, and the loss of Damon Stoudamire in December to a season-ending knee injury, the team still won more games than they did the previous season, and qualified for the playoffs for the third year in a row. Their winning ways led to Fratello passing Hubie Brown in April as the winningest coach in franchise history.
