1 PENRITH DISTRICT NETBALL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2017 I present my annual report to Council for the year GENERAL Opening Day on 29 th April was well supported by Federal and State politicians, Penrith City Councillors, other local dignitaries and sponsors. Our Grand Final day does not traditionally have as many dignitaries, however it was well supported. At Opening Day, Penrith RSL won the March Past and St Nicholas were runners up. All clubs made great efforts to dress up and welcome in the new season. The 45 th Annual Dinner held at Panthers to celebrate the achievements of PDNA was again, a wonderful success with well over 200 people in attendance. Our thanks to Vice President Judith Sibbald for organising another successful event. Nicole Fagan does a great job in assisting all clubs and members with their enquiries. The work of the Executive Committee is also less thanks to Nicole s assistance. Josie Cowlishaw continues in her dual role of canteen manager and cleaner of the building complex and we are indebted to her for her loyalty and professionalism over many years. Over the last nine years we have employed a grounds/court cleaner who comes in each Saturday. Once again all paid staff performed well above expectations and we thank them sincerely. REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITIONS Our 2017 Representative season results were very pleasing with our Juniors and Seniors showing great improvement. We continue to meet with our coaches to review where we believe we can improve our processes and structures. Lisa Beehag continues to work with our junior rep coaches and assist with ongoing changes for our 2018 junior rep teams. Our 12, 13 and 14 years squads are playing in the Penrith Night competition and our 15 years squad playing in Netball NSW Night InterDistrict competition. All head coaches have obtained Intermediate Coaching accreditation as a minimum qualification. Our junior State Age teams will again be staying away with coaching staff and travelling as a team to State Age which is being held at Liverpool. This was first trialled in 2015 and everyone agrees it is worth pursuing. At the Masters State Championships held in May at Netball Central, our Over 35 years team finished in 6 th position and our Over 40s team finished 4 th. Congratulations to all players and coaching staff for these good results. At the State Championships we only entered one year Under 17 years who finished in 4 th position a wonderful result and congratulations to all players, and of course the coach and manager on a fantastic effort. At the State Age Championships held in late June on our home grounds, our 12 s finished 12th, our 13 s finished 9 th our 14 s finished 7 th and our 15 s in 6 th position. With 80 teams playing in 4 divisions in each age group, these results are very pleasing and we look forward to the improvement each year. This year we entered three teams in the Metro League competition. Our teams were graded into Divisions 1, 3 and 5. Divisions 1 finished in 9 th position, Division 3 also in 9 th position and Division 5 finished in 4 th position in tightly fought games.
2 There is a huge time commitment from both junior and senior reps for players and officials, and we congratulate and sincerely thank all our Penrith rep personnel for the amount of time and commitment they give both in their preparation and the actual results achieved. Once again this year, we were fortunate to have the huge benefit of Lisa Beehag as our head and mentor coach. We are very fortunate that she has continued in this role and we acknowledge her efforts in the process of strengthening the results as well as enhancing the culture in PDNA representative netball. I thank Council for their continued support for our representative players and officials in this important facet of our programs as the representative program also underpins all our programs for officials (coach, umpire and technical) to gain experience and further develop their skills that are returned to our local Penrith competitions. The requirement for senior representative teams to provide scorers and timers is still there so it is therefore essential that we continue to have people undergo this testing. I also advise that Scorers and Timers are paid by the Association for their duty in undertaking this function. During 2017 we continued competing in the Netball NSW Premier League Competition with Panthers Premier League Netball Inc, following its successful entry into the NSW Premier League. In this competition, there are two teams an Opens team and an Under 20 team. Lisa Beehag coached the Opens team and Jaqua Heddle the Under 20 team. PPLN is an amalgamation of three netball associations Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains and is governed and managed by a board of Directors made up of representatives of the three associations. Penrith was represented by myself as chair of PPLN with Lynn Deuis, Tricia Mann and Barry Olsen. I would like to acknowledge these people for their work with Panthers Netball. It is also a pleasure to advise that our U20 team was again successful in this competition in finishing as runners up but took out the Minor Premiership. A fantastic result and congratulations to coach Jaqua Heddle and the team. Unfortunately, the Opens team was not as successful and finished in 8 th position. Both teams are showing much promise for I sincerely thank Panthers Leagues Club for their enthusiastic sponsorship of the Panthers Premier League teams. A grant totalling $170,000 from Panthers was confirmed to set up Premier League and for the first 2 years of Premier League. Once again, Penrith Netball is extremely fortunate for the generosity and commitment given by the board of Panthers Leagues Club not just for PDNA but also for PPLN. Panthers Leagues Club have now confirmed their support of PPLN for the next 5 years which is the length of the participation contract signed with Netball NSW. Without this sponsorship, we would not be able to participate in this elite competition thank you Panthers. PENRITH COMPETITIONS After years of growth, our membership is static at around 3,900. With the introduction of Fast 5 and Walking Netball, we hope these numbers increase over the next few years. The popularity of netball generally should also add to increased participation levels. We continue to enjoy a high standard of competition particularly when benchmarked against Associations of a comparable size.
3 We have continued with our policy of speaking to players and if necessary teams for disciplinary maters. This year we also introduced one-week suspensions and Tribunals are used as the final resort. AWARDS & RECOGNITION Penrith Service Awards Only when we read what our club volunteers do for their clubs do we realise just how fortunate we are. This year we awarded one Penrith Service Award to a very worthy recipient. We acknowledge Margaret Thornton of Penrith RSL as this year s recipient. As well as Secretary of one of the largest clubs in the association, Margaret is also the Junior Rep Convenor of PDNA. The award was presented at the Annual Dinner with our congratulations and thanks. Our Diamond Paige Hadley In 2012 Paige was invited to the AIS and was frequently called into the NSW Swifts as a temporary replacement player. She was again selected in the NSW 21 & Under team and appointed Vice Captain. Paige was selected in the AIS ANL team as well as the 2012 Australian 21 & Under team that won the international series against New Zealand, Samoa, England and the Caribbean. During her first ANZ Championship season as a contracted player for the NSW Swifts in 2013, Paige was named in the Australian 21/U team for the 2013 World Youth Netball Championships, and following the conclusion of the domestic season, was selected in her first Australian Diamonds Squad. Her 2013 Championship season was capped off with winning the first NSW Swifts Coaches Award. In 2014 Paige suffered a serious knee injury and was sidelined for the majority of the year. Recovering well from her injury, Paige was selected in the NSW Swifts for 2015 and was named in the Diamond s squad to participate in the World Cup of which we all know Australian won! Paige continued to excel in Following the Gold Medal performance at the World Cup in 2015 Paige was then selected in the Diamonds squad to play the Silver Ferns in the Constellation Cup series that they eventually won on a goal differential. Paige was then selected in the Diamonds team that travelled to England in January 2016 where they won that series 3-0. Following that series Paige was selected in the team for the Quad Series against South Africa, England and New Zealand in South Africa and England in January and February To date she has 15 test caps. Paige has remained in the Diamonds squad in 2017 and recently represented the Diamonds in the World Series Fast Five in October where they finished in third position. Paige has been selected to play in the Quad Series to London and Johannesburg in January Domestically Paige has always been a member of the NSW Swifts and last played in the epic Grand Final against the Firebirds in July. That was the last ever game of the ANZ Championship and Paige finished this competition with 55 appearances saw the introduction of Suncorp Super Netball and Paige has again signed with the NSW Swifts for 2018.
4 In our 44-year history Paige is only the second player from Penrith to be selected in an Australian team. I extend my congratulations once again to Paige an outstanding achievement. The Paige Hadley Diamond Scholarship Strive to be a Diamond 2015 saw the introduction of a new junior award for a player who had participated in the State Age Championships. The inaugural award for 2015 was given to Natalina Suaali from the 14 years State Age team, nominated by her coach Cathie Collins. In 2016, the Paige Hadley Diamond Scholarship was awarded to Jessica Beards from the 14 years State Age team, nominated by her coach Sandra Hadley. This year, the Paige Hadley Diamond Scholarship was awarded to Jasmine Vella in our 13 years State Age team. Congratulations to Jasmine on her achievements. SPONSORSHIPS Panthers continues to be our main sponsor and a great supporter of Penrith Netball and provided another sponsorship of $25,000 for We greatly appreciate the wonderful relationship we have with Panthers and sincerely thank them for their continued support. We are also delighted with the support of our sponsors and thank the following companies for their continuing support to Penrith Netball. Bateman Battersby, Nepean Aquatic Centre, Cold Rock Ice Creamery, Western Sydney University, Coast 2 Coast sportswear, Greater Building Society, Outback Steakhouse, A Step Ahead Foot and Ankle Care, Jim Aitken & Partners, Home Loan4You, YUMM Pizza and Sports Physiotherapy and Work Rehabilitation Centre have all contributed as sponsors with cash and goods. On current indications I estimate the current value of sponsorship to the Association through cash and in-kind products at around $50, per annum. I continue to ask for your patronage, wherever possible of all sponsors and their products. I sincerely thank all sponsors for continuing to support Penrith Netball. VOLUNTEER SERVICE Again I thank all Association and Club volunteers. The retention of volunteers continues to be a battle. In particular I make mention of the need for volunteers to undertake the role of State Scorer & Timer for our Metro League commitments in Netball NSW continues to hold accreditation courses for Scorers & Timers for Metro League and the provision of volunteers, preferably the parents and friends of these players is essential as the cost to the Association of not having volunteers to undertake this role will in all probability result in the non-acceptance of the team entry. Without volunteers netball in Penrith would not exist. We continue to encourage Clubs to support their volunteers by paying for their club executive members to attend our annual dinner and other special occasions. This is really very small recognition for your workers and hopefully it will encourage new workers to come on board. I sincerely thank those volunteers that have stayed with our sport and also those who have taken up the rewards of volunteering.
