Now the fun begins! In this first weekend of post-season action, the No. 2-seeded Badgers travel to Minneapolis to play No. 3 seed Minnesota-Duluth ( , WCHA (3rd)) in Game Two of the 2004 WCHA Women s Final Five on Saturday. The winner advances to Sunday s Championship game. The Badgers, ranked fifth nationally by both U.S. College Hockey Online and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine, drop the puck against the Bulldogs at 1:05 p.m. Full recaps will be available on uwbadgers.com, while Final Five host Minnesota will offer live stats on BADGERS SWEEP BEAVERS TO EARN TEAM S BEST SEASON Wrapping up the regular season, Wisconsin swept Bemidji State after defeating the opposition 6-0 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin junior Jackie Friesen tallied a hat trick during UW s 6-0 shutout to lead the Badgers in scoring. Additionally, the sweep gives Wisconsin its best-ever records for both overall and league wins in school history. Frosh Meaghan Mikkelson was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week for her gamewinning goal against Bemidji State Sunday. THIS WEEKEND S SERIES: SCOUTING FINAL FIVE OPPOSITION Now entering post-season competition, Wisconsin travels to Ridder Arena to battle a familiar foe in Minnesota-Duluth. Although the three-time defending NCAA champion Bulldogs own a all-time record against the Badgers, the UW women own a record this season against UMD, including a 3-2 upset on the Bulldogs home ice (Dec. 6). Wisconsin will need to shutdown Minnesota-Duluth s top line of junior Caroline Ouellette, senior Jenny Potter and frosh Jessica Koizumi. This trio has posted 85 goals and 92 assists for 177 points together this season. In other Final Five action, No. 4 seed Ohio State and No. 5 Minnesota State play Friday in Game One to advance to Game Three against No. 1 seed Minnesota on Saturday. The winner of the Wisconsin/Minnesota-Duluth Game This Week s Scouting Report 2004 WCHA WOMEN S FINAL FIVE Game 2: #2 Wisconsin vs. #3 Minnesota-Duluth Seeded second, Wisconsin will battle third-seeded Minnesota- Duluth this Saturday for a shot at the WCHA Final Five Championship title. Minnesota-Duluth swept Minnesota State this past weekend to improve to overall and in the WCHA. All members of UMD s top line, junior Caroline Ouellette leads the Bulldogs with 29 goals and 45 assists for 74 points, followed by senior Jenny Potter (35-37=72) and frosh forward Jessica Koizumi (21-10=31). WISCONSIN LOCKED AT FIFTH IN PAIRWISE RANKINGS After sweeping Bemdji State this past weekend, Wisconsin remained in fifth place in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online pairwise rankings among the nation s top-16 Division I women s hockey teams. See the Badgers In The Polls column on the left side of this page for a complete list of the pairwise standings for this week. The USCHO.com pairwise ranking attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I women's hockey tournament. The PWR compares only those at or above.500, judging them by five criteria: record against common opponents, record in last 16 games, head to head competition, record against other teams at or above.500, and the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI). For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won against teams at or above.500. Ties are settled by the RPI. NATIONAL TEAM BADGERS SHINE FOR U.S. AND CANADA Wisconsin s Molly Engstrom was recently selected to the U.S. Women s National Team roster, while teammate Carla MacLeod participated in Canada s National Team Camp. Engstrom will play for the U.S. at the 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation Women s World Championship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 30 April 6, Last summer, both MacLeod and Engstrom joined three of their Badger teammates playing for the U.S. and Canadian Under-22 National Teams in a three-game exhibition series that the Americans won Engstrom skated for Team USA, while MacLeod and fellow UW junior Jackie Friesen joined frosh Meaghan Mikkelson and Bobbi-Jo Slusar on Team Canada. UW s team captain this season, MacLeod also captained her U-22 teammates and played for Canada s 2003 Four Nations Cup team in November. Canada lost to the U.S. after a nail-biting shootout in the gold-medal game. 3 HEAD COACH MARK JOHNSON With just one year under his belt as Wisconsin's head coach, Mark Johnson has created a strong foundation on which the Badgers can continue to build success. Named the 2003 WCHA Co-Coach of the Year with Minnesota-Duluth's Shannon Miller and also one of eight finalists for the American Hockey Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year, Johnson guided Wisconsin to a overall and WCHA record last season. The Badgers' 22 wins tied the team for most wins in a season and the.700 winning percentage is a UW record. The third head coach in the program's history, Johnson joined the staff after serving as an assistant coach with the men's program from During that time, he helped the team to a WCHA regular-season title during the season, as well as a WCHA Final Five championship in the campaign. A former Badger, he helped Wisconsin to the 1977 national championship during his freshman campaign. The first Badger to ever win WCHA Rookie of the Year honors, he went on to become the school's second all-time leading scorer with 256 points on a school-record 125 goals and 131 assists in just three seasons. Johnson would move on to greater success with the 1980 U.S. Olympic "Miracle-On-Ice" Team and a successful 11-year NHL career. One of Wisconsin's most decorated athletes in any sport, Johnson is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame, the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame and the National W Club Hall of Fame. Johnson earned his bachelor of science degree in kinesiology from Wisconsin in He resides in Verona, Wis., with his wife Leslie and their five children: Douglas, Christopher, Patrick, Mikayla and Megan.
