1 WCHA Women s Hockey Season-In-Review Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs Three-Time NCAA Women s Frozen Four Champions

2 BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS Head Coach: Bruce Olson Record: , , 5th The Bemidji State University women's hockey team finished the season overall and in the WCHA a record good enough to advance the Beavers into the WCHA post-season tournament for the fourth-straight season As 2003's fifth seed in the Final Five, Bemidji State faced Ohio State in the play-in game with the winner moving on to face the tournament's No. 1 seed University of Minnesota-Duluth In the longest game in WCHA Final Five history (79:11), the Beavers fell to the Buckeyes in the final moments of the 20-minute overtime period, 4-3 OSU's Jeni Creary broke the 3-3 tie sliding a rebound just passed Anik Coté for the win The end of the marked the end of a number of Beavers' careers The class of eight seniors have been at Bemidji State for 45 of the programs 47 wins The class was headlined by Amber Fryklund. The Hibbing, Minn., native led the team with 16 goals and 21 assists. She holds the all-time record for goals (59), assists (63), and points (122) On January 11th versus MSU, Mankato, Fryklund became the first woman at Bemidji State to top the career 100- point mark Lill Raynard also made an impact on this year's version of the Beavers as she was second on the team in both goals (11) and assists (17) to Fryklund Raynard ended her career just four points shy of the 100-point plateau (96) Lisa Peters was third on the team in assists with 15. She also added three goals Peters leave BSU as the all-time leading scoring defenseman with 35 goals and 53 assists for 88 points Junior goaltender Anik Coté, capped a season in which she posted the second-best GAA in the history of the program (3.11), being named as the WCHA Student of the year The award marked the third-straight season that BSU has been home to the recipient of the WCHA award BSU also took home nine WCHA All-Academic awards including: Andrea Carlson, Cote, Guylaine Haché, Betsy Hegland, Alicia Kinsman, Ashley Medori, Peters, Raynard, and Jenny Schnickel Freshman goaltender, Jill Luebke was selected to the WCHA All-Rookie team... First-year head coach Bruce Olson coached the team to nine wins, a mark that equals for third on the teams all-time victory list for a single season. MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS Head Coach: Laura Halldorson Record: , , 2nd NCAA Frozen Four Participant The Minnesota Golden Gopher women's hockey team ended the campaign with a record, in the WCHA. Minnesota ended its season at the Frozen Four, dropping the semifinal game to Harvard and the thirdplace game to Dartmouth. Minnesota went into the championship as the third seed. It was the second consecutive year that the Gophers have been selected as one of four teams at the NCAA national championship. Minnesota has now made it to the national championship five of the six years since becoming a varsity sport Ronda Curtin and Natalie Darwitz were Team Notes named to the JOFA All-America first team. It is the first time in school history that the Gophers had two members on the first team. Curtin is the only Gopher to earn first-team All-America honors twice in her Gopher career. Darwitz is the first person to score over 60 points since Nadine Muzerall and Ambria Thomas tallied 60 in the season. Darwitz has the most points by a freshman in school history. Darwitz had 68, beating out Muzerall who had 64 in her first year as a Gopher. It ranks third in school history for the most points in a season. Krissy Wendell missed eight games due to a fractured collarbone. In just 25 games played, Wendell had 27 goals, 28 assists for 55 points. She was named to the JOFA All-America second team, the All-WCHA second team and the WCHA rookie team Curtin finishes her Gopher career with 167 points, ranking her third in school history. As a member of the Maroon and Gold, Curtin scored 60 goals and 107 assists. Of her 60 goals, 25 came on the power-play, three short-handed and 13 gamewinning goals. Winny Brodt made her mark on the Gopher history charts in her three years wearing the Minnesota jersey. She holds the school record in goals (41), assists (93) and points by a defenseman (134). Both Brodt and Curtin were Patty Kazmaier finalists and named WCHA Defensive Players of the Year Jody Horak had another stellar performance between the pipes for the Golden Gophers. On Feb. 15, Horak broke the record for most wins in a season in a 4-2 win over Minnesota-Duluth. Horak finished the year with a record and collected five shutouts. Horak was named a first-team All-WCHA and was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week twice this season. MINNESOTA-DULUTH BULLDOGS Head Coach: Shannon Miller Record: , , 1st WCHA Final Five Champions NCAA Champions Bulldogs (31-3-2) captured their third consecutive NCAA Championship on their home ice, in front of 5167, winning the final game 4-3 over Harvard University in the second overtime on March 23, 2003 Sophomore forward Nora Tallus tallied the game-winner for the Bulldogs after 84:19 minutes played. Tallus scored the game-winning goal after taking a total of four penalties in the game Bulldog goaltender Patricia Sautter (26-3-2) helped the team to win the title recording her career high of 41 saves in the game One of UMD's All-Tournament Team selections, senior forward Hanne Sikio scored two goals in the final game, including the gametying goal. Sikio, who finished her career with a total of 100 goals, also tallied a goal and an assist in the semifinal win against Dartmouth Another senior forward, Joanne Eustace also earned two points in the final game, assisting both the game-winning and game-tying goals. Eustace is fifth in Bulldogs career statistics with a total of 98 career points First-year forward Caroline Ouellette, who ranked second in nation's freshman scoring (31-42=73), was honored with an All-Tournament forward and the Most Valuable Player honors. Ouellette tallied the opening goal of the final game and had a short-handed goal and two assists in the semi-final game In UMD's 5-2 semifinal win over Dartmouth College, sophomore forward Larissa Luther notched the first two goals for UMD, while junior forward Jenny Potter and senior forward Maria Rooth each had two assists in the game Semi-final game's 51 shots on goal marked the most shots for UMD in NCAA competition Jenny Potter, the 2003 WCHA Player of the Year, earned her first ever NCAA National Championship title and was also named to the All-Tournament Team For nine Bulldogs this was the third NCAA title, while seven players had their second championship experience and five players won their first ever NCAA crown UMD is the only school in the three-year history of the NCAA Frozen Four, to win the title and to host the event with its team competing in the tournament With the win the Bulldogs stretched their undefeated streak in the Frozen Four competition to 6-0-0, while head coach Shannon Miller posted an amazing record of in just four years of Division I hockey Bulldogs also captured the WCHA Regular Season (21-2-1) and Playoff titles in their perfect season of UMD's 31 wins is the most wins the team has captured in one season since it started in 1999 Three UMD seniors, Maria Rooth (232), Hanne Sikio (220) and Erika Holst (204), recorded their 200th career points this season Senior defenseman Navada Russell leads the Bulldog defenseman with a total of 90 career points Erika Holst' game-winning goal in the semifinal game marked her 100th career goal, while the final game was the 100th game for senior Jenny Hempel Freshman defenseman Krista McArthur (15-24=39) led the Bulldogs in defenseman scoring, being third among all the nation's blueliners. MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS Head Coach: Jeff Vizenor Record: , , 7th Minnesota State ended its season with a split at home against St. Cloud State to finish overall, in the WCHA Junior netminder Shari Vogt collected her 11th career win, which tied the career wins leader Senior goalie Katie Beauduy ended her career leading MSU in wins (11), ranking second in saves (1370) and save percentage (.883) and third in goals-against average (4.07) Tristin Stephenson ended her career atop the MSU career goals list with 32. She is also the career leader in points (67), assists (35), games played (133), power-play goals (14) and gamewinning goals (4) Sophomore forward Melanie Salatino tallied 18 points in her first season as a Maverick to lead the rookies. She was third on the team, behind Stephenson and junior Amanda Osborn Minnesota State loses Beauduy, Amy Egli, Stephenson and Anne Rickbeil to graduation Minnesota State ends the season with 10 wins, the most since its inaugural season of MSU collected 77 goals and 110 assists for 187 points, more than doubling last year s output. They averaged 2.26 goals per game In the WCHA, the team finished with nine points, a team record This year, MSU had three victories and three ties against WCHA teams.

3 OHIO STATE BUCKEYES Head Coach: Jackie Barto Record: , , 4th The Ohio State women's ice hockey team finished the season fourth in the WCHA standings and at the conference tournament. The Buckeyes ended their season overall and in WCHA action. They tallied 88 goals and 130 assists, averaging 2.4 goals per game The No. 4-seed Buckeyes defeated No. 5 Bemidji State, 4-3, in overtime March 6, then fell to No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth, 4-1, March 7 and No. 3 Wisconsin, 4-1, March 8 in the 2003 WCHA Final Five Tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The 79:11 minutes of action March 6 against Bemidji State marked the longest game and only the second overtime in the four years of WCHA tournament history. The previous overtime was between Minnesota-Duluth and Wisconsin in 2001 and lasted 68:49 minutes Four Buckeyes claimed WCHA All-Academic Team accolades - sophomore Jeni Creary, junior Emma Laaksonen and seniors Lindsey Ogren and Lindsey Steblen. Ogren and Steblen were selected for the thirdconsecutive year and Laaksonen for the secondconsecutive year Jeni Creary claimed her first WCHA All-Tournament Team accolade. Creary scored three goals in the Buckeyes' three games at the tourney. She recorded the game-winning goal in the final seconds of the first overtime to lead No. 4-seed Ohio State to a 4-3 overtime victory over Bemidji State. Creary also notched an additional goal against BSU and the Buckeyes' lone goal against No. 3 Wisconsin The sophomore class led the Buckeye squad with 88 points. Four of the five sophomores tallied points - Jeni Creary (37), Jennifer Desson (26), Meaghan Mulvaney (18) and Jaclyn Haines (7) Seniors Shana Frost and Emily Hudak end their careers as OSU's all-time leaders in career points. Frost tallied 98 points (46-52) and Hudak, all-time assist leader, recorded 85 points (15-70) Ten Buckeyes reached double-digits in points this season. Last season, only seven players obtained more than nine points. The current record is 12 players from Six players ended the season with a plus rating: Meaghan Mulvaney +14, Jeni Creary +6, Jennifer Desson +6, Jaclyn Haines +8, Emma Laaksonen +5, Jana Harrigan +2. ST. CLOUD STATE HUSKIES Head Coach: Jason Lesteberg Record: , , 6th St. Cloud State concluded its first season with Jason Lesteberg as head coach. A 1996 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus and former Division III All-American with the Gusties, Lesteberg led SCSU to an overall record this season and a record in the always rugged WCHA. Lesteberg's SCSU squad featured five seniors, including forwards Abby Cooper, Erin McNamara, Jennifer Swanson and Amanda Mathison along with goalie Laura Gieselman. This group represented SCSU's first group of recruited student-athletes to play at the University As the Huskies look ahead to the season, a total of eight skaters from the team's top 10 scorers are eligible to return from this year's team. Tops on that list of heavy hitters is team scoring leader Carrie Holldorf, who had during her first year at SCSU (of note, she is a transfer from Providence). SCSU's other top returning scorers include Melanie Pudsey ( ), Ashley Stewart ( ) and Roxanne Stang ( ). On defense, WCHA All-Rookie selection Kelly Stewart is slated to be back for her sophomore season in At the year-end team banquet, the Huskies named senior goalie Laura Gieselman as the team's Most Valuable Player for A three-time WCHA All-Academic award winner, Gieselman also gained the team's Academic Achievement award and was named the St. Cloud Times Star of the Season for Gieselman leaves campus as the owner of virtually every SCSU goaltending record -- including her 3.27 GAA and.899 saves percentage in The team's other award winners this season included first year defender Randy Jelinksi (Most Improved Player), senior forward/defender Amanda Mathison (Most Determined Player) and first year forward Ashley Stewart (Rookie-of-the- Year) On the subject of , defender Kobi Kawamoto will serve once again as the team's captain. Kawamoto, a resident of Surrey, B.C., had three goals and nine assists during her junior season with SCSU in She will be joined next winter by assistant captains junior Leanne Perrin, a defender from Maple Ridge, B.C.; and sophomore Tina Ciraulo, a resident of Fraser, Mich. Junior forward Roxanne Stang moved into the team's career point leader position this season. Since 2000, Stang has charted 89 career points, two more then former leader Fiona McLeod, who had 87 points from Stang is the Huskies' all-time career goal leader with 58. Another record setter in , was senior forward Abby Cooper, who leaves campus having played in a total of 134 games during her career and that moves her past previous record owner Tara McNamara (126 from ). Cooper leaves SCSU ranked third in team records with 77 career points ( ). The season included non-conference road trips to Niagara, Mercyhurst, North Dakota and Wayne State. UMD, winner of all three NCAA titles, took 84:19 to earn its latest championship. Nora Tallus scored at 4:19 of the second overtime notching the championship-winning goal for the Bulldog 4-3 victory over Harvard. The contest, the longest in NCAA women s hockey history, was played in front of the largest crowd in NCAA Women s Frozen Four history and the second largest women s collegiate ice hockey crowd of all-time with 5,167 people in attendance MINNESOTA-DULUTH SWEEPS LEAGUE TITLES Minnesota-Duluth became the first WCHA school to take the regular-season, post-season and NCAA titles in the same year. The Bulldogs went to gain its four-point cushion for the regular-season title. UMD then defeated Ohio State, 6-1, and Minnesota, 5-3 in the title game, to win the 2003 WCHA Women s Final Five. COACH OF THE YEAR Minnesota-Duluth head coach Shannon Miller led the Bulldogs to their third consecutive NCAA title and was named the 2003 American Hockey Coaches Association University Division Coach of the Year. Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson, the WCHA Co-Coach of the Year with Miller, along with Minnesota head coach Laura Halldorson, made the list of eight finalists. FIVE ALL-AMERICANS Five league members representing two teams were selected to the Jofa/AHCA All-American Team. One half of the six-member first team were WCHA players, with Minnesota defender Ronda Curtin and forward Natalie Darwitz, as well as Minnesota-Duluth forward Jenny Potter named to the squad. Minnesota-Duluth forward Maria Rooth and Minnesota forward Krissy Wendell were selected to the second team. THREE FINAL RANKED TEAMS Three WCHA teams made the final list of ranked teams, while four teams were listed in the poll during some point during the season. Minnesota-Duluth completed the season as the topranked team in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll after winning the NCAA title. Minnesota finished fourth with its fourth-place result at the NCAA Frozen Four. Wisconsin also finished ranked No. 6 in the final poll. The four teams that were ranked during the season and their highest ranking: Minnesota-Duluth Minnesota Wisconsin Ohio State 1st 1st 5th 10th FIRST IN ATTENDANCE The Western Collegiate Hockey Association led the nation in attendance in each of the first three years of its existence and it can now add a fourth year to the streak. For its 116 regular-season tilts, the WCHA attracted 70,481 fans for a 608 average. The ECAC ranked second at 322 fans per game. PATTY KAZMAIER FINALISTS Four players from the WCHA were named to the list of 10 finalists for The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. Two each from Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota were among the group. Bulldog forwards Jenny Potter and Maria Rooth, along with Golden Gopher forwards Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell were honored. Rooth became a four-time finalist with the honor, while Jenny Potter made the cut and was among the final three choices. 3
