1 April 2017 High Altitude Victory Gardening Classes 6-class High Altitude Victory Gardening Class Series Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 11-27th Teton Co. Extension Office from 11:30am-1pm Learn to successfully and economically plan, plant, and harvest safe and healthy food for you and your family! In this 6-class course catered towards high altitude gardening in Teton Valley, we will learn about garden planning and planting, irrigation, soil and composting considerations, and harvesting. $30 for the series (or $6 per class space pending). Cost includes handouts and materials. Registration and payment deadline for the class is Friday, April 7th (cash or check made out to Teton County Extension). The 4-H Scholarship can be used for college, trade schools or specialty training. The past several years this has cost the endowment fund around $5,000 per year. Current 4-H members help to raise money for the endowment fund. This year our scholarship fundraiser will be a fun evening in the newly remodeled fairgrounds building. Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 The members will serve dinner. Each club has been asked to bring a auction item. I hear clubs are getting pretty creative with what they will offer! There will be door prizes and chances to buy raffle tickets for the amazing quilt donated by Loose Threads Quilt Guild. Each member will be asked to sell tickets to the dinner, so be ready to invite your friends and neighbors. What a great way to kick off the summer!

2 Farmers Market Manager & Vendor Trainings April 7th in Idaho Falls The Idaho Farmers Market Association, University of Idaho Extension Small Farms Team, and Idaho State Department of Agriculture are collaborating to bring regional training opportunities to market managers, staff, volunteers, and vendors. Learn more by visiting: Peas are one of the easiest and earliest vegetables you can plant in the Tetons FUN FACTS Where do the dry split peas used to make pea soup come from? They are varieties of garden peas with smooth seeds that are high in starch. Instead of being picked when young and tender, the pods are left to mature on the vines until they and the peas inside are dry. These were the kind of peas used to make pease porridge referred to in the old nursery rhyme. Garden peas are a good source of protein. One-half cup of cooked peas contains 4.3 grams of protein, along with ample amounts of Vitamins A, C, K and iron. Experiments with peas in the 19th century enabled Gregor Mendel to elucidate the principles of inheritance that laid the foundation for the modern science of genetics. According to British etiquette guru William Hanson, the only proper way to eat peas is to spear them with the tines of a fork. He describes scooping peas with your upturned fork as a faux pas and notes that Good hosts will never serve [peas] at a formal dinner party. Just in case you re planning to ask the Queen to dinner Fresh Green Pea Humus 1 cup Peas, green, raw 1 / 2 cup chickpeas (garbanzo beans) 1 clove garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 / 4 teaspoon salt 1 / 8 teaspoon black pepper, ground Combine green peas, chickpeas, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper in a food processor. Process until completely smooth, at least 4-5 minutes. Information found on

April 10th Goats Judging-Will learn what to look for when judging breeding and market goats and terms used. April 11th Sheep Judging Clinic Will learn what to look for when judging market sheep. April 18th Meat Judging Learn how to identify different cuts of meat April 24th EPD Learn how to judge using data information May 15th Horse Judging-will learn how to judge a horse and some terms used. 4 EISF Livestock Tags If you are interested in taking a livestock project to the Eastern Idaho State Fair we need to know how many tags you need. Remember the EISF tags cost $1.00 each and are required for your animal to participate at the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Call if you have questions. Gardening & Bee Keeping Teton County 4-H is excited to announce the addition of this fabulous new club. A grant through the Teton Valley Community FounNEW CLUB dation will help to fund the purchase of materials and supplies to facilitate this club. Club members will become producers of vegetables grown in our very own garden. The club bees will be hosted at Snow Drift Farms in Victor. The super exciting feature of this grant and the club is the produce from the 4-H garden and hives will be donated to the senior center! What a fantastic, hands-on philanthropy lesson! We are currently looking for adult leadership for this club. Enrollment for participants is currently taking place. For more information contact extension of go to your on-line enrollment and add this exciting adventure saw the formation of the Teton County 4-H Advisory Council. Interested volunteers were asked to submit a letter back in November. The council is designed to act as a liaison between parents and extension staff, leaders and extension staff, and the fair board and extension staff. These members are: Regina Beard, Hailey Beard, Katie Murdock. 4-H Advisory Council Youth Philanthropy Grant The Community Foundation of Teton Valley asked 23 students from Teton High School to review grant applications for the Youth Philanthropy Grant. The grant written by Teton 4-H was one of nine funded! In this grant proposal it was written that Teton County 4-H members would purchase a hog at the livestock auction, pay for the processing and then present it to the SENIORS WEST OF THE TETONS!! We are excited to offer this learning opportunity to 4-H members. What a way to connect senior consumers to 4-H kids who raised the animal! When the meat is ready we will have to get as many 4-H kids as possible to present the gift. As 4-H leaders we have the opportunity to foster positive development in youth. One way to think about the characteristics is by using the: Caring / Compassion Role model caring about all members, supplies, animals, projects Acknowledge helpful compassion to younger members. Competent Allow youth to feel competent; Show trust in their abilities. Encourage independent efforts. Confidence Have a little faith; if they make mistakes they will learn. If they succeed they will gain confidence. It s a win/win. Connections to others Try to foster a sense of team in your club. Character Role model acceptance and appreciation for everyone s unique character. Build character through humor and experiences. Contributions Bring words like community, volunteer and service into discussion. Share what you get out of your volunteer commitment.

Thank you Jesse and Jason for your commitment to serve. Teton Fair and Rodeo Queen Contest Have you ever wondered how those girls get the crowns and banners? Have you dreamt of carry the American Flag in the rodeo arena on the back of your galloping horse? There is a contest to determine the queens and princesses of the rodeo. Applications will be available this month. The contest will take place in June. Contact Chris Miller at the county extension office for more information. The remodeling of the fairgrounds building is well under way. From the outside you may have noticed new windows and a door. This will go into the office area. The remodel also includes complete renovation of the kitchen, a new oven and grill, and upgrades on the bathrooms. The fair Board estimates to date of completion to be May 1.
