Each spring and fall, Tractor Supply helps raise money for 4-H programs through the sale of Paper Clovers in their stores. Dates for the fall campaign are Oct Thank You to our local Oneonta Tractor Supply. $1, was raised at Tractor Supply during the 2017 promotion! The Otsego County 4-H Program used these funds to help support local programs in Scholarships were provided for 4-H Capital Days, Career Explorations, Agribusiness Conference, STARR and Animal Crackers. 4-H clubs are invited to visit the Oneonta Tractor Supply with a club display or demonstration during paper clover time. Please let the 4-H office know if your club would like to book a time. It s great way to celebrate National 4-H Week! 4 4-H Club News Don t forget to submit your club news each month. Code Your World! Kids and teens, Code Your World at the Huntington Library in Oneonta on October 18 & 25. This fun hands-on two part 4-H series offers dancing, spinning, throwing dice, and coloring puzzles while learning about coding and FUN Computer Science (CS) challenges! Code Your World is perfect for first-time and beginner coders ages The 4-H National Youth Science Day (4-H NYSD) challenge is being held throughout the month of October, across the country. Developed by Google and West Virginia University Extension Service, it includes a computer-based activity on Google s CS First platform. Special THANKS to Huntington Library for hosting this National 4-H event in Otsego County! Registration is limited, first come, first served. Call or go to FREE Chickens to a Good 4-H Home! Purebred Buff Orpingtons. Fully vaccinated. 3 pullets and a rooster. Beautiful golden Buff Orpingtons, hatched at the Murray McMurray Hatchery July 6. Vaccinated with a Pullorum certificate. Excellent breed for a beginner. They are large, calm, brown egg layers and can also be brooder hens. Rooster exotic breed likely a Silver Pencil Leghorn or a Phoenix. As it gets older we will be able to tell. Also Silver Laced Wyandottes that are a year old are not vaccinated and no certificate. Note: The hatchery gets $18 each for this breed of pullets. These are really good birds and I would like to see them go to a 4-H member. Call (Supp s Produce Farm) leave a message on the machine and I will make arrangements with the 4-H member to get their chickens to them. 4

5 Otsego County National 4-H Week is October Take advantage of this important week to highlight the remarkable 4-H youth in your communities and showcase the incredible experiences that 4-H offers young people. 4-H clubs are encouraged to celebrate National 4-H Week with a Window or outside display in your community. a photo of your display by October 15 and see your 4-H Club in the November Power of Youth! The theme is 4-H GROWS! Looking for ideas? As a Club: Make a flag or a banner. Have a reception for parents. Do a service-learning project. Prepare a meal. Invite the parents as guests. Have a talent show. Invite friends, parents and donors. Make cookies for the school custodians, secretaries, cafeteria staff and bus drivers. Prepare refreshments for the teachers' lounge. Decorate a bulletin board at a school or library. Present a thought-for-the-day over the intercom each morning. Advertise a wear-green day. Have a phone-a-thon. 4-H'ers phone all the donors and sponsors to say thanks. 4-H Proclamation Presentation Otsego County Board of Representatives welcomed two members of the 4-H Dog Program for the presentation of the National 4-H Week Proclamation at their October board meeting. Before the formal presentation, there was a spotlight on the 4-H Dog Program. 4-H Dog Program Volunteer, Sonja Galley, Eva Dangca, and Ava Lesko do a dog treat demonstration. 6 Otsego County 4-H Trip to the Boston New England Aquarium & Quincy Market Saturday, November 24 Reach out and gently touch cownose rays, Atlantic rays, and epaulette sharks as they swim through The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank, then dive into the Science of Sharks at our exhibit featuring shark species from around the world. Meet three different species of penguins and pet a sea star, meet a lobster, or cradle a hermit crab at the Edge of the Sea s tidepool touch tank. Wind your way along the four-story Giant Ocean Tank and be mesmerized by the 200,000-gallon Caribbean coral reef exhibit teeming with more than 1,000 marine animals. From the Atlantic harbor seal exhibit to the Olympic Coast Exhibit to the Yawkey Coral Reef Center, the Aquarium has something to entertain visitors of all ages. Schedule 6 a.m. Leave Oneonta Bus Lines 7 a.m. Pick Up Cobleskill Park and Ride Travel time approximately 4 hours, one rest stop 10 a.m. Arrival, on own for the day 6:45 p.m. Depart, rest stop on way back 11 p.m. Arrival Cobleskill Park and Ride 11:30 p.m. Arrival Oneonta Bus Lines Cost: $65 Includes admission and bus ride. Make checks payable to: Cooperative Extension DEADLINE: November 10 To register online go to -England-Aquarium_243 Insectapalooza 2018 Saturday, October 20, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. This year's event will be held at Cornell University s, Comstock Hall. Come see the bizarre, bad, and beneficial of the insect world! The annual, one-day insect fair is hosted by the Department of Entomology at Cornell University. Insectapalooza is an interactive, hands-on experience that features hundreds of live insects, spiders, and other fascinating arthropods. Popular favorites include the live Butterfly Room and Arthropod Zoo. The cost of entry is $3 per person, children 3-years old and under are free. 8 4-H Otsego County 4-H Issue Committees Otsego County is fortunate to have Issue Committees that work with Extension staff, to address key Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development priorities. Committees help: Address and integrate state-wide 4-H issues into an overall local plan of action. Identify and analyze critical issues confronting youth and families. Identify target audiences for 4-H Youth Development programs. Identify strategies (educational events, curriculum, etc.) to deliver programs to various audiences. Develop, implement, and evaluate programs. Review available educational resources regarding their usefulness. Maintain effective links between the issue committee and Extension staff. Current Issue Committees in Otsego County: November 7, 7 p.m., Milford Central School is the next meeting date of the following Committees: Consumer Science, Dairy, Horse, and Livestock. Saturday, October a.m. The Paulson Preserve, Schoharie County 4-H youth ages seven and up are invited to join us for a guided hike through a local nature preserve where we will learn about fall tree identification and what a watershed really is. Registration is required, contact Teresa Adell at tla47@cornell.edu , Interested in being a member of one of these committees? Contact the 4-H Office. HURRAH! 4-H Otsego County Fair Checks were mailed October 3. Please be sure to cash them by December 31! 9 Animal Science 4-H Livestock Auction Meeting Saturday, November a.m., Milford An orientation meeting for the H Livestock Auction will be held at Milford Central School, 9-11 a.m., Saturday, November 10. Anyone interested in selling an animal in the H Livestock Auction, at the Otsego County Fair, must attend this meeting. Auction species include: beef, goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine. Requirements of the program will be explained. You will not be allowed to sell at the auction if you have not attended this orientation program. Youth MUST be accompanied by at least one parent/guardian during the orientation. Note: INTERESTED youth are welcome to attend with no obligation to participate in the Auction. Please contact the 4-H office to register or if you have a conflict with this date. Call or otsego@cornell.edu. Registration deadline: November 6. Junior DAIRY LEADERS in Otsego County! Congratulations to Austin Ainslie and Garrett Proskine for being selected into the Junior DAIRY LEADER Program! The Junior DAIRY LEADER Program is for teens with an interest in exploring careers in the dairy industry through hands-on experiential learning. The program presents youth with a realistic view of the dairy industry as a viable, profitable and progressive business sector, while also building personal and professional skills. The Beginning DAIRY LEADER Program gives high school participants the opportunity to explore postsecondary agricultural education and career opportunities in a networking environment through interaction with faculty and students, college planning, and personal development for teens entering the sophomore year.
