This annual 4-H evaluation event is for 4-H youth that earned a blue ribbon at county level 4-H presentations and are recommended to participate at the district level. Eighty youth from the nine county South Central District registered to participate in the annual event held at the Chenango Forks School on April 5. Representing Otsego County were: Demonstrations, Ellie Ainslie, Martha Modinger, Owen Kennedy, Louisa Emhof; Illustrated Talk, Ben Andela, Ian Bolin; Room Hostess/assistant, Teagan Bolin. 4 he 4-H Beef Club spent the morning at The T Farmer s Place learning about the processing of meat. We were taken through the whole process from beginning to end, including the making of hotdogs, pepperoni, bologna, and the smoking process. The kids not only got the tour they also were included in the hands-on processing, packaging, and enjoyed many tastings as well. It was great fun and a learning experience. Thank you to the Farmer s Place. Club News Smile, you are on my camera! 4-H Beef Club visits The Farmer s Place Gilbertsville Kool Kidz Club met in March and the 4-Her s presented at Public Presentations at Morris Central School. They talked about different animals and recited poetry for the audience. The Kool Kidz has been working on their photography skills. Three of our members attended the photography clinic that was held in Gilbertsville. They had a wonderful time learning about their camera and portraiture skills. 4-H Photo Clinic was held on March 29. Participants were Lora Andela, Fiona Held, Olivia Held, Paige McCoy, Bailey McCoy, Martha Modinger, Ethan Newman, Sadra Smith, Ivy Stensland, Madison Lapp, and Megann Andrews. 4-H Pet Treats his was the best year for Otsego County. T 960 packages were sold! Congratulations to the Top Sales persons. #1 was Abigail Miller, Glimmer Glass Explorers 4-H Club who sold 46 packets. #2 was Martha Modinger, Otsego Helping Hands 4-H Club who sold 37 packets. Both top sales people will receive a personalized embroidered hooded sweatshirt; Abigail will also receive $25. Top 4-H Club Glimmerglass Explorers 4-H Club sold 158 packages. They will receive $50. 5 Animal Science 4-H Pre-Sale Showmanship Clinic Saturday, May 17 9 a.m. Fairgrounds, Morris he Otsego County 4-H Calf Sale Committee is hosting a showmanship clinic on Saturday, May 17 at 9 T a.m. at the Morris Fairgrounds to help prepare animals for Sunday s calf sale. Help is needed washing, feeding, watering, and clipping animals. There will also be a showmanship clinic, topline clinic, and what to pack in your show box clinic! Please bring a dish to pass for lunch. Check in on your arrival with proper apparel (please no flip flops or sandals and be prepared to get wet at the wash rack). Please bring the following items if you have them. Clippers, hoses, wash buckets, top line blowers and brushes, extension cords, power strips, etc. Please make sure that all of your supplies are clearly labeled with your name. We will supply the soap and grooming supplies for top lines. Additionally, items are needed for the Calf Sale Silent Auction. Baked goods and sewing projects work well. If bringing baked goods, please bring them on Sunday as we have no good place to store them until the auction. Each youth is encouraged to bring at least one new or homemade item. Otsego County 4-H Calf Sale Sunday, May 18 1 p.m. Fairgrounds, Morris ome support your local youth. Otsego 4-H is holding its annual calf sale on Sunday, May 18 at 1 p.m. C at the Otsego County Fairgrounds in Morris. All breeds will be represented in the sale. There will be a silent auction prior to the sale along with food concessions. A pre-sale seminar by Jason Lloyd of Maple Downs II will begin at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. Mr. Lloyd will be discussing pre-season show calf preparation. 4-H youth are actively involved in all phases of preparation including the sale itself. Come out and support their hard work! Dairy 101 or Equine 101 June 7 to 8 at Morrisville State College ornell Cooperative Extension Oneida in collaboration C with CCE Herkimer and Madison counties will be hosting Dairy 101 and Equine 101 at Morrisville State College on June 7 and 8. This program is for youth ages 13 to 19. Youth can choose between the equine or the dairy tracts. Participants spend the night on campus in the dorms, eat at the college cafeteria, enroll in classes, and spend two days as a college student! Cost is $100 for youth and $75 for chaperones (no chaperones are necessary). This program was developed to give youth an opportunity for hands-on learning of animal science while exploring a college campus atmosphere. Come join us to learn how to lunge, bathe, clip, braid/ band your horse, and tips on how to present yourself and your horse in a showmanship class. All riders must have a current 4-H rider evaluation. Rider evaluations will be offered on Friday, May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. You must pre-register to be evaluated. All preregistered participants will be evaluated first, any others will be placed at the end (time permitting). There will be a sign up sheet with time slots when you arrive. All riders moving up a level, or riding a new horse must be evaluated. Registration forms and the $25 per participant fee are due to the 4-H office by Friday, May 16. Please make your payment to CCE. Animal Certificates 2014 J une 1, is the deadline for 4-H animal certificates for horses and leased animals. Certificates must be on file in the 4-H office by June 1. Certificates are available from the 4-H office or on line at resources Attention Poultry Exhibitors! Animal Science Regional Nutrition Workshop pril 12 the Farmers Museum hosted a 4-H Regional A Nutrition Workshop for market animals. 4-H youth from Chenango, Oneida, Herkimer, and Otsego Counties learned about nutrition and marketing their 4-H market animals. Nutrition professionals met with youth to determine the best feeding ration for their project animals. Species sessions were offered for beef, rabbit, sheep, goat, swine, and poultry. Youth also learned about the cuts of meat and marketing. Workshop presenters were, Melanie Soberon, Professor, Cornell University; Brad Johnson, Professor, SUNY Cobleskill; Dave Tisch, SUNY Cobleskill, Feeds & Feeding Professor; Dr. Cindi Shelley, SUNY Cobleskill; Makenzie Fitzpatrick, with Kent & Blue Seal; Joe Hafele, Animal specialist with Purina; Liz Farrow, Cornell University graduate; Eric Shelley, President/Consultant with Meat Pro; John Lathrop, beef producer. Pullorum Testing Thursday, June 19, 5 to 8 p.m. Otsego County Fairgrounds, Morris irds must be at least 4 months (16 weeks) old. B Chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, peacocks, pheasants, and quail are eligible. (Pigeons and waterfowl are exempt from testing. Birds obtained from an NPIP certified hatchery/flock (or from a feed store), may exhibit with a copy of the NPIP certificate or receipt showing the NPIP information. These expire in one year. It is a requirement to exhibit at the county and state fairs. You can test up to 10 birds (per family). There will be no testing at the fair. 8 Otsego County 4-H Capital Days By Chase Thomas in Rotterdam, New York, (across the street from Bellevue Builders Supply). This will also be tomato plant pickup for those of you growing tomatoes. The warehouse tour is 9:30 to 11 a.m. Please be on time. 4-H FIRST Robotics News Can-struction it was Ducky with the 4-H FIRST Robotics Team! April 13 to 21 the Southside Mall hosted the annual Can-struction Project. Teams competed for a winning creation built with cans of food. After the awards are given and displayed for the week the food is given to those in need. This year there were 1999 cans of food donated. A total of 2183 pounds of food was given to eight food pantries. Juror's favorite and people's choice was a Sea Monster. The 4-H Robotics entry earned the award for best use of labels. 4-H Capital Days 2014 (left to right) Assemblyman William Magee, Chase Thomas, Meghan Barringer, and Senator James L. Seward arch 2 to March 4, Meghan Barringer, of Morris, M and Chase Thomas, of Oneonta, attended the 79 th annual 4-H Capital Days in Albany, representing Otsego County. 4-H teens came from around the state to better understand the New York State public policy process. Highlights included a breakfast with legislators, including State Senator James L. Seward, and Assemblymen William Magee. At dinner, Assemblyman Peter Lopez gave us pointers on how to become involved in our communities, and State Senator, Cecilia Tkaczyk spoke at the closing ceremony. We also toured the state capitol complex and the Court of Appeals, and watched the senate in action. We learned a lot, and met new 4-H friends from around the state. It was fun! Thank you to the Bunn Fund for making this great experience possible. Remember, the May 10 marketing workshop and warehouse tour at Golub Corporation Warehouses on Route 7 4-H Robotics Duck Chase Thomas to attend FIRST Robotics World s Event hase Thomas, 4-H Robotics team captain and junior C at Oneonta High School earned the prestigious Dean's List award at the recent New York Tech Valley regional. Chase advanced to the FIRST World s event in St. Louis, on April 24 and 25. There he met 100 youth competing for one of 10 overall world-wide winners. Great Job Chase! 9 Otsego County (Continued from page 8) 4-H LEGO Robotics Summer Camp July 14 to 18, 8 to 11 a.m. Oneonta he 4-H First Robotics Team 4203 will host its second T annual LEGO Robotics Camp this summer. The camp will be held in Oneonta and will run from July 14 to 18. Camp runs from 8 to 11 a.m. each of the five days. Attendees will use LEGO Mindstorms. The camp is a fundraiser for Team The camp fee is $100 and will support the operating budget of the 4-H Robotics team. The camp is open to youth entering grades 6, 7, and 8 in September. New Website Launched ornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie and Otsego C Counties is excited to announce the launch of a brand new association website. Please visit and click on the 4-H Youth Development page for more information on Otsego and Schoharie County 4-H Programs! Become a Certified Master Food Preserver! A comprehensive 3-day Master Food Preservation Certification training will be offered on June 10, 11, 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the SUNY Cobleskill Culinary Arts Lab, Champlin Hall, in Cobleskill. This program is sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie and Otsego Counties and the Creating Healthy Places initiative. Program space is limited to 21 participants. Preregistration with payment of $350 per person is required no later than Wednesday, June 4. The registration fee includes instruction, a 340-page handbook, and lunch each day. Participants will be sent home with prepared food samples. Employment application forms are available in PDF format on DEC s website at " Farmsafe For Kidz Annual Poster Contest - July 7 he George Fuller Memorial Fund through NYCAMH T (The New York Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health) is sponsoring the 24 th annual Farmsafe For Kidz poster contest. 4-H members and area youth are eligible to participate if they live in Chenango, Delaware, Fulton, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, or Schoharie County. Poster entries can be taken to the Farmers' Museum Junior Livestock Show on Sunday, July 6, or to the NYCAMH office in Fly Creek by Thursday, July 3. This year, NYCAMH will focus on ear, eye, and skin safety hazards when living on the farm. Prizes will be awarded Monday, July 7, at 6 p.m. in the dairy show tent during the annual Farmers Museum Junior Livestock Show. All entries will receive a ribbon and a small gift. Poster contest winners will be selected from three age groups, ages 8 and under, ages 9 to 12, and ages 13 and older. Winning posters will be awarded monetary prizes and ribbons. Points will be awarded for safety message, originality, and neatness. Posters must be 22" X 28" in size on 6 ply poster board. You must sign up! The Great New York State Fair Thursday, August 21 to Monday, September 1 -H Youth Building Exhibits (Schoharie and 4 Otsego Counties), Thursday, August 28 to Monday, September 1. Wanted Teen Leaders for State Fair! Join the county 4-H teen team or apply for state fair teen leader positions. The county teen team manages the county exhibit and provides hands-on learning activities for fair goers. You may also join the state fair teen team. These positions are a great way for teens to learn basic job skills, make new friends, and experience new sides of 4-H in New York that they may not be aware of. Teen leaders work with exhibit evaluators and help with other program activities at the fair. Shifts are six hours a day so there is plenty of time for teens to experience the fair together. Teen leaders participate during their county's time period to make travel plans and chaperoning easier for counties. Sign up is by June 10. First come, first serve. New exhibitor entry card, replaced the old green entry card (on card stock). We will no longer be using the long green exhibitor information statement cards as in the past. There will be two parts to the entry card this year that need to be attached to the exhibit. Part 1, new green exhibitor entry card; Part 2, new exhibitor entry statement (one page available on line). All entries must have an exhibit entry card and entry statement attached to the fair entry to be judged. 10
