4 4-H Club News Lord of the Reins reports we finished up our riding season with a beautiful ride at Cranberry Bog. Jim Petersen kindly gave us permission to park at his barn. Since then we have been: cooking rabbit; canning chicken (raw pack/ pressure canner), canning applesauce (both water bath and steam canners). We will review our cake decorating and decorate goodies for our Christmas party and have a party in December, then start our new cake decorating course (fondant) in the new year. Lord of the Reins Lord of the Reins Gilbertsville Dairy held their annual 4-H recognition Unadilla Bits & Bridles sold pies at the Sidney Tractor event on November 19. Supply on November 19. Bits & Bridles Gilbertsville Dairy Recognition event not pictured: Dalton Proskine and Nate Edwards. Otsego s Gone Goating 4-H Club reports that this month our leader asked us to attend the Ag. Conference at the Farmers Museum. While there we listened to speakers, speak about plants, seeds, and farming. We also got to spin a wheel at another person s table. My group set up a table with our 4-H projects. Each member of our group took a turn sitting at the table and explaining our displays. At our meeting this month our leader taught us about matching does and bucks to make successful offspring. This was fun! We also learned the good things about artificial insemination. We ended our meeting with cider and cookies. Our meetings are always a good time. 4

7 4-H Otsego County 4-H Public Presentations Calendar for 2018 Friday, Dec 15 -Leader Packet to be mailed Friday, Dec 29 -Registration for Member Workshop Saturday, January 6, 9-Noon - Member Workshop Saturday, February 17, 9-Noon - MORRIS Presentations Saturday, March 3, 9-Noon - MILFORD Presentations Saturday, March 17 District Public Presentations, Binghamton TBD State Public Presentations Why 4-H Public Presentations? Public speaking is one of the most important life skills 4-H members learn in 4-H! To most people, the thought of preparing a speech and delivering it to an audience is terrifying. However, 4-H youth members throughout NYS, as well as the country, have an advantage in public speaking. 4-H members develop and practice their speaking and communication skills through a 4-H program called 4-H Public Presentations. 4-H Public Presentations teaches youth how to effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas. Youth that learn how to express their thoughts clearly to the people they interact with on the job, in school, or at home will be a more valued employee, a better student, and a more understood family member. 4-H alumni credit 4-H Public Presentations as the edge that places them above their peers in both college and professional careers. 4-H Leaders and Parents, ENCOURAGE your 4-H members to participate in 4-H Public Presentations!! The Farmers Museum Ag Conference The 2017 Conference on Food & Farming: Careers and New Ventures was hosted by The Farmers Museum on Nov 4. The focus on careers and new ventures included presentations by Otsego County 4-H members and the Otsego County 4-H Auction Program. The day included knowledgeable speakers, vendors, breakout sessions and a panel discussion. NY Commissioner of Agriculture, Ken Ball was also on hand to give an agricultural update. Approximately 120 people attended the event. 4-H members from the Gone Goating 4-H Club (l-r) Braydon Hascup, Cameron Jones, Hannah Audette, and Chase Burkhart, represented 4-H at the Ag Conference.
