7 New Beef. It s What s For Dinner. Campaign Celebrates Consumers Love for Beef and the People Who Raise It Courtesy of: The Beef Checkoff Twenty-five years after establishing one of the nation s most iconic food brands, America s beef farmers and ranchers are leveraging the strong equity of Beef. It s What s For Dinner. to reintroduce the brand to a new generation of consumers. The relaunch will blend the strongest assets from the long-loved brand such as the famous Aaron Copland Rodeo music and the famous tagline and couple those with new creative assets. In total, the effort showcases the pleasure that beef brings to meals, the people who raise it and the nutritional benefits (such as protein) that beef provides. Consumers love beef, and as with all foods, today s consumers want the whole story about the beef they buy. said Alisa Harrison, senior vice president, Global Marketing and Research, National Cattlemen s Beef Association, a contractor to the beef checkoff, which funds the campaign. Our research shows that the Beef. It s What s For Dinner. brand is still extremely popular among consumers, including millennials. So, in honor of its 25th Anniversary, we have refreshed the brand and updated our resources to make beef information available to consumers where they want it, when they want it and how they want it. Hereford.org Winter

8 The overall effort was designed with millennial media preferences in mind. The campaign launches Oct. 9 with digital advertising and a new digital platform at a single, comprehensive location that provides an interactive experience on all things beef, from cuts and cookery, to a robust collection of beef recipes to an inside look at the lives of the people who raise beef. Beef is one of the most popular foods among consumers, whether it s your favorite steak or burger. But it can also be one of the most confounding, with questions ranging from the right cut, to the right way to cook it to where it came from, said Harrison. That s why we wanted to make beef easier to enjoy. We re setting out to answer the biggest questions that consumers have about beef, all in one place. To launch the campaign, NCBA has produced an anthem video that features the familiar children s song, Old McDonald Had a Farm, with a new twist, to celebrate the American tradition of ranching while shedding light on what s new about raising food today. This summer, the Beef. It s What s For Dinner. team traveled more than 3,800 miles from coast to coast to capture video, images and the stories about the real people who raise beef. The new series of videos and content will feature only real farmers and ranchers from across the country. While cattle and beef are raised differently in California than in Florida, or Iowa or Washington, the passion and commitment to care for the animals and land is the same. Harrison explained that through the video series, consumers will learn about each step of the beef production process, from the farms and ranches, to feedlots, to processing and retail and to the consumer. Today s farmers and ranchers blend time-honored traditions with cutting edge innovations to raise beef, from drones and GPS tracking on the range to apps and other electronic tools that ensure precise and nutrient-filled rations in the feedbunk, she said. Later in the year, new advertisements that celebrate beef s unique qualities as a protein source will launch to appeal to consumers genuine love for beef, along with virtual tools such as 360 degree videos that show how beef goes from pasture to plate. This all comes at a great time to enjoy beef. The recently completed National Beef Quality Audit, funded by the beef checkoff, shows a higher percentage of beef is grading Prime and Choice the two highest grades USDA assigns than it has in more than 35 years. Steak tenderness has achieved its best tenderness scores since testing began in 1990, according to the National Beef Tenderness Study. Beef Green Chili 12 ounces cooked (leftover) beef Brisket, cubed or shredded (about 2-1/2 cups) 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 medium yellow onion, chopped 1 large jalapeno pepper, seeded, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 3 cups canned diced green chiles 1 can (14.5 ounces) fire roasted diced tomatoes, undrained 2 tablespoons dairy sour cream 1. Heat oil in stockpot over medium heat until hot. Add onion, jalapeño pepper and garlic; cook 5 to 7 minutes or until onion is tender, stirring occasionally. 2. Stir in beef Brisket, chiles and tomatoes; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 20 minutes to develop flavors, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in 2 table spoons sour cream. 3. Garnish with additional sour cream, tortilla chips, cheese, avocado or guacamole, if desired. Toppings (optional): Dairy sour cream, tortilla chips, shredded Cheddar cheese, chopped avocado or guacamole 6 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 30 Official Publication of the MHBA

9 Dues Increase Effective 2018 The MHBA is instrumental in putting on quality shows around the country. We continue to get more requests to help with premiums, awards, and sponsorships. In addition to more requests, the actual awards and premiums are continuing to rise. Our income sources are limited and we mainly rely on membership dues. In the past, the NWSS sale created commission income to help keep the MHBA funded. We no longer have a sale in Denver so that income is not available. An internet National Sale has been discussed, but to keep pace with the higher expenses it was proposed to raise membership dues for both Junior Membership and Family Membership. The board has unanimously voted yes to raise membership dues beginning January 1, 2018: Junior Membership - $25/year and Family Membership - $85/year. Passed by the MHBA Board, December 5, 2017 As a reminder, dues are due in January, but can now be paid up at any time. You may pay via the website or by sending a check. Renewal s will be going out in January. Thank you, MHBA Board daminihereford@pmt.org 175 W. 200 S. Rupert, Idaho Hereford.org Winter

10 The Miniature Hereford youth Foundation was established to promote youth involvement in the breeding, management, showing, and marketing of Miniature Hereford Cattle through developing leadership skills, and educational programs, encouraging personal growth, as well as providing a pathway towards attaining grants to continue to promote Miniature Herford breeding programs and awarding scholarships. What is the MHYF? By Cynthia DuVal, MHYF Secretary/Treasurer Often I am asked, What is the MHYF and what does it do? Well, the Miniature Hereford Youth Foundation (MHYF), which is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, was established in 2010 under the guidance of the Miniature Hereford Breeders Association, to assist and promote our youth in their future endeavors with the Miniature Hereford breed. The Foundation was developed to help encourage our youth to participate in the breeding, raising, showing and marketing of Miniature Herefords and in doing this we hope to develop their leadership skills and encourage personal growth. The MHYF works in collaboration with the Miniature Hereford Breeders Association, dealing exclusively with youth and the junior activities. What does the MHYF do for our youth? Well, one of the initial things that the Foundation provided for youth was a scholarship program. This division of the MHYF began with a donation heifer being auctioned off at the 2011 NWSS Miniature Hereford World show. This was the nest egg for the future Scholarship program. In order to assist in the growth and continued ability to provide scholarships, the annual Miniature Hereford World Calendar was developed. The Calendar fundraiser has ensured that there are funds available each year to provide scholarships to several applicants. Over the past seven years, the Scholarship division has awarded 19 scholarships, totaling over $12,000. With the support of the MHBA membership and others, the Scholarship division is able to not only provide High School scholarships, but collegiate scholarships as well. For more information on how to apply for scholarships or make contributions to this amazing opportunity 8 Miniature Hereford News; Issue 30 to support our youth in their future education, contact the Director of Scholarships. Another division of the MHYF deals with Grants and Junior shows. This expanding division of the Foundation includes two primary groups: Large-scale Jr Shows and small- to medium-scale sanctioned Jr Shows. The large scale Jr. Shows house their operation funds within the MHYF to utilize the non-profit status; this means that any donations/contributions made specifically to these shows are tax deductible. Currently these large-scale shows include (but are not limited to) Junior Nationals, NWSS Miniature Hereford Junior Show, and Iowa State Fair. However, not every junior show is as large as these, or necessarily needs assistance in its program. The smaller-scaled sanctioned shows have the ability to apply for Junior Show Grants that are used to help with the purchase of prizes/awards provided to the youth exhibitors at the show. Some of these shows include (but are not limited to) NILE Jr Show and PNW Regional Jr Show. All sanctioned junior shows within the MHBA are eligible to apply for Grant assistance. If you would like more information on the grant application process, or are interested in providing financial support to any of our junior shows, please contact the Director of Grants. The newest endeavor for the MHYF is the MHBA Royalty, consisting of the Junior Queen and Princess, who will represent the Miniature Hereford breed at several MHBA functions. The 2018 MHBA Court will be announced during the annual NWSS Miniature Hereford World show banquet. Please watch for more updates as this progresses. You can contribute to the MHYF endeavors through several avenues: Sponsorships (Junior shows) Personal Donations Memorial Donations Fundraising o Calendar Advertising (Scholarships) o Calendar Sales (Scholarships) o Apparel Sales (Grants) o Gift/houseware Sales (Jr shows/grants) Auctions The MHYF is growing along with our youth. As we expand, we will be able to provide many more opportunities for our youth. If you are interested in serving as a MHYF Board member, serve on one of our committees, or have ideas for new fundraisers or activities, please contact the MHYF Secretary/Treasurer. So, with the understanding of how invaluable the MHYF can be to our youth, please continue to help the MHYF grow and flourish, especially through your financial support. Only as a united front can we continue to provide MORE to our youth and their future! Star has been in the pasture since the first of June with WW Joyful Jude, a four time Grand Champion & Reserve Grand at the Houston Livestock Show last year See pictures on MiniatureHereford.org Young Registered Cow - Champion bloodlines Pagosa Springs, CO WW Ranch-North 970/ WW Sampson s Kid Sunshine is a young, registered cow born 5/25/2013 with Champion bloodlines both top and bottom of her pedigree. 38 Region Reports Region 5 Hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! As 2017 comes to an end I can t help but to reflect on how much the Miniature Hereford Bred continues to grow in numbers and in quality. It has been a privilege to serve as Region Director 5 for 2017, thank you. The opportunity to work with so many existing and new Miniature Hereford Breeders has been very rewarding I am looking forward to great things in The Iowa Beef Expo sales is schedule for February 11th. This sale has grown in numbers and quality this year s offering is looking like it will be the best yet. For more details please visit Conoverauction.com or contact me with any questions. Showing Mini s Making Memories is the Jr. National theme this year the dates are June in Kearney, NE. If you have not attended Jr. National s in the past I would encourage you to add it to your show schedule it is a great event for Jr. s. Keep an eye on the Miniature Hereford Junior Nationals page for updates and information. The National Western Stock Show is always a busy few days but one of my favorites I hope to see many of you there or at another upcoming event. As we have grown in numbers and the financial support needed to support all the shows has drastically increased, I would encourage you to keep an eye on the many fundraisers that are being promoted. If you have fundraising ideas or suggestions please call me. From my family to yours I wish you the best of success with your program in If I can assist in anyway please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at or rollinghillscattle@yahoo.com. Brent White, Region 5 Director Region 9 With 2017 gone and all of us looking forward to what 2018 will bring us. Calving season is just around the corner, we have a lot to do prior to the new arrivals, clean barns, vaccinate and worm the cows, make sure we have all our equipment in working order, and most of all have a good working relationship with our veterinarian {just in case} preparation now may make the difference when calves are due. My favorite time of the year is the calving season, the anticipation of what our Bulls are going to throw when bred to that special cow, is it a show calf or a pasture calf. Will those first time heifers be good mommas? Was that flush a success? Then comes breed back time, do we repeat that breeding or use a different bull on that cow. I wish you all the best during calving season. We had a great Utah State Fair this year; this marked our fourth year with an increase of entries and exhibitors year over year. This year David Bennett from Idaho was able to get a Miniature Hereford show at the Eastern Idaho State Fair, in Blackfoot, Idaho. It turned out great with good animals and great people. The Fair board was overwhelmed by the response from the public, there will be a show there again in This show is immediately prior to Utah State Fair. These are two shows you want to put on your calendar for September I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2018 and wish you all a great year with the Miniature Hereford Cattle in your corrals. Daniel Taylor, Region 9 Director 36 Region 8 Happy New Year Miniature Hereford Family! Boy did 2017 fly by quickly; we are already prepping for the 2018 NWSS World Miniature Hereford Show in Denver. With all of us right in the middle of winter, please make sure that your cattle have some type of shelter and plenty of fresh water and hay to help them maintain a healthy weight; it is harder to put weight on than retain it through the winter months. Sales for spring wormers and vaccinations should begin soon, so make sure to stock up so you are ready for those exciting spring days! I would like to send a great big WELCOME to all the new members in Region 8, if you have any questions or need any assistance, please don t hesitate to give me a call. My family and I wish everyone in Region 8 as well as all of our Miniature Hereford families a wonderful, exciting and prosperous New Year! Contact us at: duvalfarms@gmail.com.
