13 Marcus and Jozy Stegman Family 4-H Family of the Year Each year, the Baca County 4-H Council recognizes a 4-H Family of the year. This award is presented to a Baca County 4-H Family who has exhibited qualities and actions that promote the high standards, image, and ideals of the 4-H program. They must be a family currently involved in Baca County 4-H program, participate in club and county 4-H activities and events, and be involved in the community inside and outside of 4-H. The Marcus and Jozy Stegman family was selected as the H Family of the Year. Testimony from the Vilas 4-H Club s nomination of the family reminds us that Marcus and Jozy were both involved in 4-H growing up where they participated in various projects as market swine, market beef, quilting and breads. Marcus and Jozy were also 4-year members of FFA. They continue their involvement in 4-H today by volunteering as organizational leaders for the Pritchett Westernaires 4-H Club. Marcus and Jozy are deeply involved in the Pritchett FFA Chapter volunteering for many chapter activities and Marcus auctioneers at the annual student sale as well as the Baca County Junior Livestock Auction. Jozy is a member of the Pritchett school board and works full-time at the Baca County Treasurer s office. Marcus works for Southeast Colorado Power Association, is a member of the Pritchett city council and is the superintendent of the chicken/rabbit barn at the Baca County Fair. Marcus and Jozy both assist with the Mutton Bustin at the Baca County fair and volunteer their time for citizens in the Pritchett community. Marcus and Jozy have passed their love of 4-H, their community, and love of life on to their 3 children, Kylie, Mariah and Landon. All three children are members of the Pritchett Westernaires Club and Kylie is a member of the Baca County 4-H Council. Kylie has participated in food preservation, market and breeding rabbits and photography. Mariah has enjoyed her projects of food preservation, crochet and market and breeding rabbits. Landon has also participated in breeding and market rabbits, rocketry, and leathercraft. The Stegman Family are members of the Springfield Church of God and are exceptional role models for fellow 4-H families and all of Baca County. Thank you, Stegman Family for giving so selfishly of your time and resources to help the youth of Baca County! You are truly loved and appreciated!

14 Honorary 4-H Members The Baca County 4-H council awards honorary memberships each year. These awards are presented in order to show appreciation to our biggest supporters. Award winners are individuals of families who have volunteered for and/or supported the Baca County 4-H Program throughout the years and in outstanding fashion. This year, the Council was so grateful for the support from others, that the members voted to select two separate winners for the H year. Bill and Patty Brooks Family 2017 Baca County 4-H Honorary 4-H Members Nominated by The Vilas Livestock 4-H Club, and on behalf of the Baca County 4- H Council, we are truly honored present the Bill and Patty Brooks family as Baca County Honorary 4-H members. Brooks Family are the shining example of a compassionate, loving, patient and joyful family. Bill and Patty were both members of the Vilas Livestock 4-H club growing up. Bill participated in market beef and leathercraft. Patty loved exhibiting her projects in cooking and sewing. If you get a chance, ask Patty about her experience in the style review where she smiled so much her face started twitching uncontrollably! A memorable story that has brought lots of laughs to the family! Bill and Patty attended college at OPSU in Goodwell, Oklahoma. They returned to the Brooks Family Farm Southeast of Vilas where they have lived and raised their children, Ginger, Brian and Michael. Patty started her teaching career at Walsh and later moved to the Vilas School District where she has taught junior high and high school language arts for 26 years. Patty has worn many different hats while working for the Vilas School District; she has been the reading coach, cheerleading coach, yearbook advisor, tobacco coalition sponsor, drama teacher, Vilas Citizenship & Leadership Council sponsor, and helped with the Reader s Theatre. The one accomplishment that Patty values the most is being a caregiver for her family. Bill is the head wrangler for the Brooks Boys Ranch where he manages the farm and ranch while teaching his sons and grandsons (Justin, Kyle, Kade, Hayden and Ty) the joys of farming and ranching and how to survive the hard times. Of course, there is a few political discussions along the way! Bill serves his community as a Vilas School Board member, Elkhart COOP board member,

15 member of the Campo Grazing Association, and the Walsh Wesleyan Church board. Bill was also a leathercraft project leader for the Vilas club. Bill and Patty have been supporters of the Baca County Junior Livestock Auction for many years. Bill and Patty taught their children the importance of 4-H in which all their children were 10-year members of the Baca County 4-H program. Ginger participated in market swine, market beef, cooking, sewing, cake decorating and leathercraft. Ginger attended Citizenship Washington Focus, was a member of the Baca County 4-H Council, attended many District 6 activities such as the Missouri Exchange Trip, and enjoyed participating in the state style review. Currently, Ginger and her family live in Laken, Kansas and she is the Title I Reading teacher in Ulysses, Kansas. She and her husband volunteer their time as Cub Scout leaders. Brian participated in market swine, market beef and leathercraft. He currently farms and ranches with the family and works hard at keeping and upper hand with sons, Hayden and Ty. Brian is the President of the Baca County Conservation District, Chairman of the Baca County Farm Service Association, past president of the Colorado Wheat Growers Association, National Wheat Growers domestic trade and policy committee, and board member of the National Wheat Association. Brian enjoys mentoring his sons with their market swine projects in 4-H. Michael rounds out the crew and participated in market swine, market beef and leathercraft, was the Treasurer of the Baca County 4-H Council, attended Leadership Development Conference, State Conference, and Citizenship Washington Focus. Michael attended college at West Texas State University and currently farms and ranches with the family. Michael is currently a member of the Colorado Sorghum Association Board and member of the Legislative Committee for the National Sorghum Producers. Congratulations to the Bill and Patty Brooks family.

16 Paul Chatham 2017 Baca County 4-H Honorary Member The Baca County 4-H Council is privileged to announce Mr. Paul Chatham as the 2017 Baca County 4-H Honorary Member. Paul comes from an extremely long legacy of Baca County 4-H. In his youth, Paul and his siblings, George and Ilene, were all 10 year members and his parents Vernon and Mary were members for 30+ years. Paul participated in project such as but not limited to horse, dairy, beef, leathercraft, vet science, small engines and tractors as well as competed in State Livestock judging and tractor contests. Additionally, all of Paul s children (Names) were 10 year members where Paul became even more involved in livestock and general projects alike, in Baca County. Paul is now a 35 year leader in Baca County, acting as a project and organizational leader for the Big Rock 4-H Club as well as an advisor for approximately 25 years of the Baca County 4-H Council. Paul is perhaps most famous with 4-Hers of all ages and clubs for the countless hours he spends manning the grill at the Baca County Fair each year. Paul was nominated by the Baca County Homestead Pioneers 4-H club in which they vouched for Paul s tireless service, positive attitude, willingness to lead, and amazing generosity. Baca County's 4-H program is far better because of Paul. He inspires us to give more to our community, our club, and our family. We can't think of a more deserving recipient. We'd like to see him smile, the way that we always do when we interact with him.

17 Baca County 4-H Outstanding Member Awards The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize Baca County 4-H members in good standing who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, citizenship, and participation. An outstanding member has gone above and beyond with their club, projects, and other 4-H activities and promote the true meaning of 4-H Outstanding Intermediate Member Shelby Wallace 2017 Outstanding Senior Member Kylie Franklin

18 Record Books Every year each 4-H members fill out a record book as part of completing their project requirements. These record books are an aid in teaching life skills such as time management, financial recordkeeping, the reality of profit-loss, and writing skills. Farm Credit Services of Southern Colorado awards $50 to the overall top livestock record book in each age division. The General Project Record Book contest is sponsored by Barrett and Mallory Sikes. Books are judged for completeness, accuracy, their 4-H project pictures, and 4-H story. Ties were broken using 4-H stories which document each 4-Hers experience. 35 Beef Carcass Contest All 4 H Beef Cattle that were harvested following this year s county fair were entered and eligible for the carcass contest. Winners were selected using quality grade and yield grade factors, which influenced the premiums, paid over the base, per hundredweight, for each carcass.
