The new State Fair Cooking with Honey Contest! This year, the State Fair 4-H Building will add Cooking with Honey as one of the Specialty Contests. Clover Kids Day at the State Fair- A special day for Clover Kids (youth ages 5-7) will be featured in the 4-H building in Sedalia on August 14. All 4-H Clover Kids and their families are invited to attend this event. Clover Kids can: Display an item they have made Receive a State Fair participation ribbon Give a demonstration (just show up that day and we ll find time as soon as possible for Clover Kids demonstrations) Participate in arts/crafts, science and other fun learning activities See cool 4-H stuff displayed in the building 4-H Day Camp July 19 Poplar Bluff Attention ages 5-13 Cost is $20 and registration is limited so do not delay! Attention Livestock Project Members SEMO Fair Nominations SEMO District Fair nomination letters & forms for swine, goats & sheep have been sent. The deadline to have them completed & returned to the Cape County Extension office is July 15. Forms are also posted online at: u/capegirardeau/4h.aspx and Swine Project Members Please note breeding swine will be returning to the fair this year. Gilts may be shown as a market hog or breeding stock - not both. Show Me Quality Assurance (SQMA) To exhibit livestock of any kind at the SEMO District Fair, you must be SMQA certified. Training is scheduled for July 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level, Cape County Extension office; July 13 at 6:30 pm at the Perry County Extension Office in Perryville or you can complete it online at: du/smqa/. If you are unsure if you need to complete it, call the Cape County Extension office. You will not be allowed to show if it is not completed.

5 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational Matches Several county 4-H programs host shooting matches open to any current Missouri 4-H member. As information is received about these matches, it is posted to the 4-H website: 4h.missouri.edu/shootingsports-events/more-shootingsports August 6 -- Lewis Co. Invitational The Lewis County Shooting Sports Invitational will be held at the Deer Ridge Conservation Area North of Lewistown, Missouri. All eligible Missouri 4-H members currently enrolled in Shooting Sports projects who have met county, club & project requirements are invited to participate. Events: Archery-300 round, Archery- FITA, field and 3D combo, Hunting & Outdoor Skills, Small Bore Rifle, Air Pistol, and Shotgun- Trap and 5-Stand. Preregistration required. Entry forms are available at u/lewis/forms.aspx & must be returned by July 15 th with all required signatures, health & authorization forms & fees. State Shoot Registration Registration for the 2016 State Shoot is scheduled to open July 5 and will close on August 1. Registration for both August and September events will be combined into one registration as done in the days of paper registration forms. The State Trap Shoot on August 27 and the 300 Archery event on August will be self-scheduled again. Meaning the 4-H member will select their own times during the registration process. So, counties that want to shoot trap together in the same squad need to coordinate their registration. Other events may also be selfscheduled, so read instructions thoroughly before beginning the registration process and during the process. This year the state Skeet Shoot will take place on Sunday, August 28 in the St. Louis area. Please read the most current information regarding the State Shoot events, dates, rules, locations, etc. by reading the 2016 rules and other information found on the website: ting-sports-events/stateshoot It is your responsibility to know and follow the rules and procedures. Mizzou Mizzou offers seven different camps: Scrub-In to a Health Career, Build-a-Business, Dog Days of Summer, SENSEible Science: Dyeing to do Chemistry!, The Arts and a Portal to Science, Network Forensics for Hacker Trackers & GeoTech: Drone Camp. Camps available for a wide range of ages beginning with 12; registration info will indicate age range of each camp. 6 Bring the excitement of a dairy farm to life in your classroom with the Adopt-A-Cow program from St. Louis District Dairy Council. Designed for Pre-K through Second Grade, classrooms can adopt and name a calf from a local farmer, then follow her growth over the school year. Through monthly e- mails, students can learn about the important work dairy farmers do. Monthly updates in your inbox will include photos of the adopted calf, personal messages from the farm, activity pages and handouts for students, and other classroom resources. In addition, you'll get an adoption certificate and poster to track her growth in the mail. Anyone interested in adopting can go to and click on the Adopt-a- Cow logo. National 4-H Council and 4-H National Headquarters are pleased to announce the H National Youth Science Day Challenge: Drone Discovery. Developed by Cornell University Cooperative Extension, this exciting engineering design challenge will explore how remote sensing can be used to solve real world problems while learning concepts like flight dynamics, forces of flight, basic computer coding, as well as following federal regulations while operating drones. 7 Missouri Summer Jobs League / State Park Youth Corps- Whether you re a young person looking for your first job or an internship to round out your résumé, the Summer Job League is your connection to real-world work experience. For ages 16-24, who want to get a jump start on their future while earning some extra cash. The income eligibility is based on gross monthly income not to exceed 185% of Federal Poverty guidelines. Earn money this summer while exploring careers. You may be matched with a business operating in an industry that you are interested in, such as: retail/customer service, information technology, local parks and recreation, financial services, healthcare, business, bioscience, and much more! You can work for up to 240 hours this summer and earn $8.50/hour! To join the league, visit /summerjobs/youthinformation. An additional part of the Summer Job League Program is the State Parks Youth Corps. The Missouri State Parks Youth Corps will challenge participants to "Think Outside" by accomplishing interesting projects that help preserve and enhance Missouri's state park system. In addition to developing the critical leadership skills that will prepare them for success in future careers, the program will bolster an appreciation for the environment and "green" concepts that are an exciting part of Missouri's growing industries. Missouri youth, ages 17-24, are eligible for the program and may attain positions such as Interpretive Aide, State Parks Youth Corps I, State Parks Youth Corps II, and State Parks Youth Corps III. Missouri 4-H is proud to announce a cooperative effort of Missouri Department of Conservation, Grow Native! retailers &Missouri 4-H; funded by the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation. This project provides matching minigrants to 4-H Clubs or members across the state to plant & maintain monarch habitat gardens on highly visible public properties such as county courthouses, city parks, fairgrounds, school grounds, highway right-of-ways, etc. The purpose of the demonstration plots is to publicly promote plantings that help restore monarch habitat and to engage city mayors, town councils or county commissions, other public entities and local media. Participating 4-H Clubs and 4-H project leaders will be issued $50 vouchers by the State 4-H office to redeem at GrowNative! plant retailers covering up to ½ of the cost of landscape plantings for each 100 square feet of habitat. 8 From individuals, to schools, community groups, and businesses everyone can make a difference! Plant a pollinator garden - Any size is great! From window and patio planters, to home gardens, to pathways and roadsides, to acres of prairies and meadows all can help! Support pollinator friendly businesses - Purchase plants or seeds from nurseries, garden centers, and seed suppliers who offer pollinator-friendly plants and seeds suited to your local area. Register your Garden to BEE Counted Add a photo of your garden or landscape to the S.H.A.R.E map. Anyone and any size garden can join the campaign to reach 1 million sites for pollinators! Plant sustainably Reduce or eliminate the impact of pesticides on pollinators, conserve water; provide an overall healthy habitat for pollinators and people. Find tips and lists to help create gardens that help pollinators in your state or region at NPGN member websites. Keep an eye out for free seeds. As the challenge moves forward, look for corporate and philanthropic sponsorship of seed and plant resources. In addition, NPGN partners who distribute other garden and pollinator material will include seed packs in their mailings. Spread the word - Let everyone know you ve taken on the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge! 1 st Annual 4-H Day with the Kansas City Royals Saturday, September 17 6:15 pm Missouri and Kansas 4-H members, parents, volunteers, supporters, and alumni will gather at Kauffman Stadium for the 1st annual 4-H Day with the Royals. The World Series Champion Royals will be playing the White Socks. Tickets for the game are $35.00 each & includes a specially designed t-shirt. Pre-game ceremonies include one 4-H member joining the Captains Club to represent 4-H prior to the game. As an added bonus, the Royals give-away item for the game is an adult Royals pullover. The first 15,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-akind item. Tickets must be ordered on the 4- H Day with the Royals order form, available on the web at e/royal.aspx or for credit card orders at Ticket orders must be postmarked by August 1, Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline, so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders on the same form. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Royals raffle to win prizes. Complete information about the 4-H Day with the Royals raffle is on the ticket order form. MissouriDNR Photo Contest Amateur photographers of all ages may enter the 3 rd annual MissouriDNR Photo Contest to help showcase Missouri s rich natural and cultural resources. Winning photographs will be featured in the Winter 2017 issue of Missouri Resources magazine. The contest is divided into 3 categories: Natural Resources includes photographs of Missouri s air, landscapes & waterways Unique Places includes photographs taken within one of Missouri s 88 state parks & historic sites. People Enjoying Missouri s Waterways includes photographs of people enjoying rivers, lakes & streams throughout Missouri. 9 6 th Annual Missouri Snapshots Photo Contest Open to amateur photographers of all ages, this year s contest features 5 categories. They are Capture the Beauty, Family Traditions, Discover the Past, Fun on the Water and Hit the Trails. Entries will be judged on sharpness, composition, lighting, creativity and adherence to the category s theme. All photos must be entered online at otocontest.php before the October 31, 2016 deadline. You may enter up to 5 photos in a category, but no more than 15 total for the contest. Don t enter the same photo in more than 1 category.
