Go for the Gold is a 4-H game competition, similar to Jeopardy with questions about 4-H information from projects, opportunities, current events, etc. Our team of 4 members compete in a Regional tournament in August. The winners of the tournament go on to play in a Provincial tournament at the Royal Winter Fair in November. If you are interested in trying out for our team, please contact Kathy at or by . First 3 with the correct answers(not given by parents) will win a prize! **************************************************************** CLOVERBUD CORNER For our fourth meeting, we visited the Camden Lake Conservation Park. We went on a nature walk, searching for items we could use in our project. We saw ducks, bear tracks, a flock of Canada geese swimming with their babies, several songbirds and lots of plants and trees. We searched through sand from the lake bottom for treasures too. Our next meeting is July 9 th at McNichols where we will be playing alternative sports like mini golf, skipping, marbles, badminton, Frisbee, horse shoes and more. Cloverbuds is so much fun! Region 3 Judge-It Day, Tuesday July 26 th Missed the early bird registration? You can still attend this fun event by paying the late price of $20. Registration form is attached to this . 4 Report from the Mini Horse Club.by Adrianna MacLean Guest speaker Rachel from Purina came to talk to us about horse nutrition and how to balance the diet. She also talked to us about what the right body condition is for a foal, brood mare, stallion and the average horse. She talked to us about what a hay belly is and the feed they sell to help that and what can happen if you feed your horse too much or not enough feed. She talked about what laminitis is. She told us about what a horse should eat. 1. Hay- 2% bw. 2. Water Intake gallons 3. Salt- 1 oz. 4. Complete feed- feed to body condition score. THANK YOU to Katherine Burrows for organizing a terrific picnic for our 4-H families. We had a wonderful day in the shade, great food, great fun, games and swimming, and great friends! 5 THE FAIR IS COMING!! Thursday July 28, 2pm-9pm- Members bring their projects into the project barn. Again this year the Fair Board is presenting a free ride pass for a day to the member who submits the most projects! Get your 4-H entry bracelet..please don t lose these as you need to have them on for free admission and the free lunch on Sunday. These are issued to members aged 11 and over as children 10 and under have free admission. Friday July 29- Projects are judged from 9am-12pm doors open at 4:00pm for public display Vote in the People s Choice Award Contest. Milk booth, silent auction, 4-H mini store open in the Palace. Corn box play area open in the Palace Petting zoo and Rare Breeds in the 4-H Barn Saturday July 30-4-H Horse & Pony Show 8:00 am at the Grandstand 4-H Rabbit Show 9:30am in the Arena 4-H Sheep Show 11:30am in the Arena 4-H Cupcake Decorating Competition in the Palace Free family bingo 7-9pm in the Palace. Everyone welcome! 6 4-H in the Community Several members and some friends marched in the Canada Day Parade in Tamworth on July 1 st. Thanks to all who came out to help celebrate our birthday and to Katherine Burrows for organizing the marchers! Caitie and David McNichols also participated with a calf petting zoo at the Canada Day celebration in Newburgh. Some of our livestock members will be participating in shows at the Odessa Fair on the weekend of July 16 th and 17 th. Good luck to all! 4-H Ontario Opportunities Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture The Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture (CYSA) competition is held annually as an opportunity to develop your public speaking skills and create a forum to express community concerns. Contestants prepare a 5-7 minute speech on one of the annual themes. There is a Junior Competition (ages 11 15) and Senior Competition (ages 16 24). The Senior Champion receives $1,000 while the Junior Champion is awarded $500. Applications are made through CYSA directly. Event: November 2016 (Royal Agriculture Winter Fair) Registration Deadline: September 30, 2016 Application fees apply Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award & Bursary Deadline: September 30, 2016 The Bertram and Hazel Stewart 4-H Dairy Youth Education Award & Bursary honours Bertram and the late Hazel Stewart s deep commitment and passion toward agriculture, education and 4-H. Open to 4-H Ontario members who have been a Dairy Club member for at least three years. At application, prospective winners must be enrolled in grade 9, 10 or 11, with intent to pursue post-secondary education. Presented at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in the year it is granted, this bursary of $1,000 is payable upon successful completion of first year of post-secondary schooling. Giles Hume 4-H Ontario Centennial Award Deadline: July 31, 2016 Recognizing leadership and dedication to community betterment, and established in the summer of 2015 in honour of the 100 year anniversary of 4-H in Ontario, this award of $2,000 will be granted to a recipient to assist with their post-secondary education as recognition of excellence in 4-H and their home community. Justin Parish Memorial Bursary Deadline: October 3, 2016 This $500 bursary honours the spirit of Justin s dream of one day attending the Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF). Presented by Robin and Connie Parish, the Justin Parish Bursary will support a 4-H Ontario Dairy Club Member in attending the RAWF in Toronto. The 4-H member must be attending the Classic Show for the first time as team member, fitter or herdsperson. The recipient will be chosen by a selection committee and notified by 4-H Ontario. PResentation of the bursary will take place in the show ring during the Classic Show at the 2015 RAWF. See more details on the 4-H Ontario website
