1 Clover Connection Dickinson County 4-H Youth Development News & Updates March 2016 National Volunteer Week - Celebrate Service! April 10-16, 2016 National Volunteer Week is fast approaching. This special week offers opportunities to thank some of America s most valuable assets our volunteers and to recognize the myriad of ways they improve our communities. National Volunteer Week reflects the power that volunteers have to "inspire by example" volunteers both encourage those they help and motivate others to serve! Ways to celebrate may be found at: Thank you to our Dickinson County 4-H volunteers! 4-H Basketball The Dickinson County tournament will be held on Saturday, March 12. Brackets and rules are enclosed with this newsletter. Now in its second year is a 4-H alumni game being sponsored by the Dickinson County 4-H Foundation and coordinated by the Leadership SQUAD. Nominate your favorite Dickinson County 4-H alums to play today! See you there! CKFF Fairgrounds Clean-up Any 4-Her who participates in the Central Kansas Free Fair or the spring shows held at the fairgrounds is expected to be at the fairgrounds clean-up on Sunday, March 13. Activities will begin at 2 p.m. Bring your rakes, shovels, old bed sheets, trucks, & loaders. Please call or the office to let us know if you will be able to provide heavy equipment, it makes clean-up that much quicker. NOTE: the annual 4-H Council Pizza Hut fundraiser will follow the beef show on April 2 this year, not the fairground clean-up. 4-H Day Thank you to everyone who helped make 4-H Day a success, those who participated and served as room monitors as well as the committee that set-up, tore down, and kept everything running smoothly. Regional 4-H Day: Those participants that received Top Purple (and Alternate Purple in speaking events) at County 4-H Day are eligible to represent Dickinson County at Regional 4-H Day on Saturday, March 19 in Clay Center. If you are attending, please let us know if you are willing to serve as a room monitor for part of the morning help is needed! County Committee Meetings * Spring Beef Show Thursday, March 24, 5:30 p.m., CKFF grounds, set-up for beef weigh-in * Spring Sheep, Swine, Meat Goat Show Monday, March 30, 6:30 p.m., CAMR Committee members please let us know if you are unable to attend 4-H Council: next meeting will be on Monday, March 28 in the County Annex Meeting Room. Officers will meet at 6:45 p.m. with full council beginning at 7:30 p.m. DK Clovers - Interstate Exchange The next DK Clovers meeting will be following 4-H Council on Monday, March 28, 8:15 p.m. in the County Annex Meeting Room. Red Wheel orders are due March 21st. Opportunity for 4-H Quilters The End of the Trail Quilt Guild has opened their membership to 4-Hers in the quilting project. For a nominal fee, 4-H members will be able to participate in all guild activities. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22, 7 PM at the Abilene Presbyterian Church. Congrats to Rogan and Fiona Tokach who have been chosen to serve on the Kansas Leadership Team for the Ag Innovator s Experience. Rogan was additionally chosen to represent the team at the training in Washington, D.C.! Nice work!

Keep in mind that market livestock projects with tagging dates prior to May 1 (such as beef) cannot be added after the tagging date because of fair rules specifying a minimum number of days of care/feeding required. 4HOnline Enrollment Dickinson County 4-Hers and volunteers should be re-enrolled for the 4-H year in 4HOnline. Re-enrollments may be done by logging in to your family profile at ks.4honline.com. Don't worry if you've forgotten your password, there's a button to help with that. Instructions for enrollment were mailed with the October Clover Connection and may also be found on the right hand side of the page under Newsletters and News at Please remember in the "Groups" section to enroll in activities you'd like to participate in such as: Brown's Busy Beekeepers SPIN Club, Vet Science SPIN Club, 4-H Leadership SQUAD, DK Clovers Interstate Exchange, horse judging/horse quiz bowl/hippology, horticulture judging, and livestock judging. If you have any problems or questions, please contact our office at The Spring Beef Show will be held April 2; this show will be open to all counties and have Dickinson County classes. Entry forms may be picked up at the Extension Office or found on the 4-H page at Spring Beef Weigh-in County-wide beef weigh-in will be on March 26, 12:00 2:00 p.m. at the CKFF fairgrounds. Cattle must have halters ON. All commercial (crossbred) heifers must be tagged at the county beef weigh-in. Exception: if fall born heifers are purchased after beef weigh-in, they must be tagged by superintendent and/or county agent by May 1. Second year bucket calves that were tagged at the end of the 2015 Central Kansas Free Fair must be present at this weigh-in. Market Lamb and Market Goat Weigh-in When: Friday, May 20, 5-7:00 p.m. **NOTE date change from the Master Calendar** Where: Central Kansas Free Fairgrounds Dickinson County Spring Sheep, Swine, and Market Goat Show When: Saturday, May 21 **NOTE date change from the Master Calendar** Where: Central Kansas Free Fairgrounds Spring Show Help Needed Adults and youth are needed to help with all spring shows. Please call or the office (dk@listserv.ksu.edu) to volunteer. Swine Tagging All market barrows must be at the fairgrounds for one of two tagging dates Sunday, April 24, 2-4 p.m. or Tuesday, May 17, 6-8 p.m. Swine will be tagged on the trailer with ear notches recorded. To address disease concerns, families will be encouraged to tag their own animals, plastic boot covers will be worn, and taggers will be disinfected and dried between trailers to prevent cross-contamination. Those with farrowing operations will receive more information in the mailed tagging letter. Contact our office with questions. Livestock Quality Assurance - ***REQUIRED for ALL market livestock exhibitors*** All youth exhibiting market livestock beef, sheep, swine, and meat goats - at the Central Kansas Free Fair are required to attend a Livestock Quality Assurance training. Two training dates will be scheduled. This training will fulfill the Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) certification required of all youth exhibiting swine (market and breeding) at CKFF and all state shows. Livestock Quality Assurance classes will be taught by our Ag and Natural Resource Agent, James Coover, with 2 opportunities to attend. ALL market livestock exhibitors must attend one of these sessions. Please watch our Facebook page and your mail for these dates. DK 4-H Foundation Phone-a-thon The Dickinson County 4-H Foundation Phone-a-thon will be Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at First Bank Kansas, Abilene. Thank you to those who signed up to help! More help is still needed! Prizes will be awarded and snacks are provided. All funds raised by the 4-H Foundation directly benefit our clubs and members through camp scholarships, community service grants, and sponsorship to attend state and national events. Please plan to support the DK 4-H Foundation in this effort.

3 Page 3 Clover Connection March 2016 Club Community Service Grants Congratulations to the following clubs that have been awarded community service grants from the Dickinson County 4-H Foundation: Fragrant Hilltoppers - $300 to maintain bird feeders at Chapman Valley Manor Lyon Prospectors - $200 to make improvements at Father Padilla Park in Herington Navarre Boosters - $500 to improve the parking area at the Navarre Community Building College Scholarship Opportunities Local school counselors have information packets and applications available for 4-H scholarships. Applications are also available in the Extension Office and online at on the 4-H Forms, Applications, and Recordkeeping page. Call the office if you have any questions. County scholarship applications are due April 1! Hazardous Occupations Training It is required by law that 14 and 15 year olds who work with tractors on a farm that is not owned by their parents complete HOT. A 15 year old that took HOT last year does not have to do so again. Currently there is HOT available on May 24th in Salina but if there is enough interest, we can host a training session here in Dickinson County. For more information, please contact our Ag and Natural Resource Agent, James Coover at jcoover@ksu.edu or Camp Under Construction Purple Power Pack 4-H Camp will be held at Rock Springs Ranch this summer, June 28 July 1. Counselors will arrive on June 27. Registration forms and applications will be available on the 4-H and Youth > 4-H Camp Information page at Registration is due May 20. Camp Scholarships The Dickinson County 4-H Foundation will have scholarships available to Dickinson County 4-H youth attending Purple Power Pack 4-H camp at Rock Springs Ranch. A $50 scholarship has been included in the price for Dickinson County 4-H members. The Dickinson County 4-H Council is additionally providing $15 scholarships for those 4-Hers attending camp for the first time. If your club is providing a scholarship for campers or counselors, please let us know! Needed Camp Counselors The Purple Power Pack Camp Group is looking for camp counselors! Any 4-Her who is 14 years and older by the first day of camp may apply to be a counselor. If interested, please pick-up an application or print it from the 4-H and Youth < 4-H Camp Information page at and return it to the Extension Office by May 20. Counselors will report to camp on June 27. Volunteer Screening Process Any person that works with 4-H youth needs to complete the volunteer screening process. This includes, but is not limited to, organizational leaders and project leaders. Anyone over the age of 14 that is a junior project leader or works with 4-H youth should complete the process including application, short interview, background check, and orientation. Applications are available at h_volunteers/index.html. Online Volunteer Orientation The Volunteer Orientation needs to be completed by everyone applying to be a 4-H volunteer. It only needs to be done one time. If you have submitted an application and have not completed the orientation, you will need to be enrolled as an individual in your family s 4HOnline account in order to access the training. Instructions are available at on the 4-H Youth Development > Volunteer Screening page. The course consists of four video modules and three quizzes. Please let our office know when you have completed the orientation. Project Learning Lab Kits Learning lab kits are a fantastic resource for project meetings, providing lots of interactive visuals. Several of these kits are available to be loaned from the Northeast Area Office. If you have a project meeting scheduled and would like to use one of the kits, call us at the Extension Office. Kits are available in the following projects: dog, goat, rabbit, poultry, sheep, beef, dairy, plant identification, horse, and swine. Find us on Facebook! 4 Page 4 Clover Connection March 2016 Shooting Sports Instructor Training The next opportunity to certify Shooting Sports Coordinators and discipline instructors will be April 8 10, 2016 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. The training begins Friday afternoon 1 p.m. and will conclude Sunday afternoon. Registration will be available at Dickinson County is in need of someone to be trained as a county shooting sports coordinator in order to continue offering shooting sports projects. Please contact Jill for more information. CKFF Rule Changes The following is a list of rule changes approved by the Extension Executive Board for implementation at the 2016 fair. 5 Page 5 Clover Connection March 2016 K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy The K-State Animal Sciences Leadership Academy is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of high school students. The program is hosted by K- State Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council. The goal of this academy will be to further develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field. Students will stay on campus in university housing with event staff for the duration of the event. Twenty students will be accepted for each session. The application process is open to out-of-state students. Two sessions will be offered in 2016: June 8-11 and June 29-July 2. Info - Livestock Judging Camp The KSU Champions Livestock Judging Camp is a three day, intense judging camp designed for 4-H and FFA members, ages 14-18, who are seriously interested in enhancing their livestock judging and oral communication skills. Prior livestock judging experience is necessary for this camp. The registration deadline is May 23 rd. This information may also be found on the KSU Youth Livestock Program website, under Judging Camps. The following dates are set for the 2016 camps: June 6-8, June 10-12, June Horse Judging The Kansas State University Horse Judging Team will host two separate camps to assist youth in learning to judge horses and give oral reasons. Please visit the website, for more information and registration forms. *Beginner Camp - June 7, 2016 *Advanced Camp - June 8, 2016 Registration at: Horse Snaffle Bit Project Horse snaffle bit projects are due into the local Extension Office by May 1. Along with the nomination, the 4-H member must submit the Horse ID and a $10 fee. For more information concerning the Snaffle bit project check the 4-H Horse Show Rule Book. 6 Page 6 Clover Connection March H Campference 4-H Campference is for youth ages (before January 1, 2016), and will be held June 24-27, 2016 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the 'camp' activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. This is a great transitional opportunity, as these tweens go from being a camper to attending educational conferences. 4-H Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the state of Kansas. Register early as the space will fill on a first come basis, and Campference was full in 2014 and 2015! Registration and detailed information will be the State 4-H website in late March. Discovery Days "Get a Clue and Discover YOU"! Discovery Days Registration "Get a CLUE and Discover YOU" will be opening soon! Please be watching your for the big announcement. Registration will be opening during March and will close on April 15 at midnight at Discovery Days is a mini college experience May 31-June 3, 2016 designed for youth who are years of age before January 1. The primary purpose of 4-H Discovery Days is to gain new ideas and expand your 4-H experience through action oriented learning activities, fun tours, and great evening social events. You will meet new people, build leadership skills and grow as a person. Be sure and register SOON as classes fill up fast! Note: this event is supported with $50 scholarships to applying members from the Dickinson County 4-H Foundation and $10 scholarships to first time attendees from the Dickinson County 4-H Council. Discovery Days Floor Counselors For the 2016 Discovery Days organizers are looking for responsible, mature and dependable young adults to serve as floor counselors. These floor counselors will be responsible for leading floor meetings, doing room checks and making sure youth stay in their rooms after lights out each evening. Floor Counselors can expect to work evenings and early mornings. They will receive free room and board for 5 days and 4 nights and $100. This year s camp will be held at the K-State Manhattan campus, during the Discovery Days time frame May 31-June 3. We are currently seeking applications for Teen Leader Assistants (teens 16-19) for Sewing Camp. Assistants will be available to assist youth sewers, stay overnight in the residence halls and provide other help as needed. This is a terrific opportunity for teen and adult sewing enthusiasts to share clothing construction knowledge with others, gain leadership experience and tour the Apparel & Textile Design program at Kansas State University. Please contact Jill for more information. 4-H Photo Adventure Camp: May 31-June 3, 2016, is an exciting four day photographic experience for teens ages The camp, held at Rock Springs 4-H Center, offers hands-on workshops covering a wide range of topics and skills. Campers supply their camera equipment. Parents, project leaders and other 4-H Volunteers who have completed the 4-H volunteering screening process are invited to attend camp and learn along with the youth. Enrollment is limited so don t delay in registering for Photo Adventure Camp The registration fee is $190 for youth or adults. Register on-line. 8 68th ANNUAL 4-H BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT March 12, 2016 Saturday Start Time - 8:30 a.m. District Gymnasium, Chapman Kansas TOURNAMENT SPONSOR: KVK, INC., Woodbine PURPOSE The purpose of the Dickinson County 4-H Basketball Tournament is to provide 4-Hers who do not participate in interscholastic basketball competition the opportunity to participate in a team sport. Play to the level of your opponent. We want everyone to enjoy the experience of 4-H basketball. ELIGIBILITY 1. Enrollment cards must have been in the 4-H Office by November 1. (EXCEPTION - First year 4-Hers, 7th grade and under.) 2. 4-Hers with incomplete records in 2015 are ineligible. 3. Cloverbud 4-Hers are NOT eligible to play basketball. 4. Basketball -- All 4-Hers who have been a member of a school basketball squad and played school ball in the current school year will not be eligible to play 4-H Basketball. (Intramural basketball does not count.) 5. Each club will have a boys or a girls team if there are 5 or more on the roster. Co-ed is for when there is 5 or less of each sex. There will only be one co-ed/boys or girls team per club. Teams cannot be divided on a boys, girls, or co-ed so there will be multiple teams per club. TOURNAMENT RULES 1. BE A GOOD SPORT! This includes players, coaches, parents, and other 4-Hers! 2. Respect our referees. Referees are paid a nominal fee. Due to differences in age and skill of players, these games are difficult to officiate. 3. Tournament will be single elimination with all teams guaranteed to play two games. 4. Team rosters are to have at least five names to enter a team and at least 4 players must start the game. Clubs that do not have enough players for a team can submit a roster of individual players for $1/member. These players will be placed on teams. 5. DO NOT BRING BASKETBALLS FROM HOME! Basketballs will be furnished; NO OTHER BASKETBALLS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE GYM. 6. Team members are strongly encouraged to wear the same color of shirt or jersey, with a different number for each player. 7. Each time a team plays, the team is to supply two members or adults to keep score, spot players, etc. The coach is responsible for score keeping if an adult is not available. 8. Games will be two twelve minute halves with two one-minute timeouts per half per team, and a 5-minute half. The clock will only stop for time-outs, fouls, and during the last two minutes of the game for dead balls. There will be five minutes between games. 9. Three-point shots will be allowed only in the Championship game. 10. Five fouls per person. 11. Half court press allowed if ahead by less than 10 points. Defense must drop to the 3-point line with lead of 10 points or greater. No full court press allowed. 12. Remove all jewelry, no hair pins. 13. NO FOUL LANGUAGE will be tolerated from anyone associated with the 4-H Basketball Tournament. Failure to abide by this rule will result in ejection. - over Coaches are asked to sign before the tournament that they understand the rules. High school coaches

9 require an adult assistant. ROUND ROBIN RULES 15. If no teams are tied, then the won-loss record is used. 16. If one team is 2-0, the winner of the head to head game between the other teams will be in the 3 rd place game. 17. If each team wins a game: A defeats B, B defeats C, C defeats A; then the 13 point tie-breaker is used to determine the first place team. (A wins by 12 points, they would get 12 and B would lose 12. B wins by 10, C loses 10. C wins by 14 they would get 13 points and A would lose 13.) 18. If 2 or 3 of the teams with the highest point differential tie then total defensive points will be used to determine the team that would be 1 st place. 19. If all the above ends in a tie, then the teams will be drawn from a hat. Committee requests a coaches meeting prior to the start of each game. Revised 2/2014

Nominate your favorite Dickinson County 4 H alum to play in the first ever alumni game coordinated by the Dickinson County 4 H Leadership SQUAD. Former 4 Hers and parents of 4 Hers are eligible 4 H basketball tournament rules plus some will be followed Teams will be randomly drawn prior to tip off and coached by members of the champion 4 H club teams Head referee will be Aunt Sandy Abeldt Nominations will be accepted at the Dickinson County Extension Office until Friday, March 11 and at the concession stand the day of the tournament. Nomination fee of $5 per nominee is required. Those nominating players are responsible for making sure their player knows when and where to be for the BIG GAME. Staff members and counselors are trained to provide youth a fun and safe experience at Rock Springs. 4-H members and their friends are encouraged to attend. Camp is a wonderful opportunity to explore new interests, make new friends, and to live and make decisions as a member of a group. To maximize this experience, you are expected to abide by the camp rules and to conduct yourself in an acceptable manner. Treat yourself, other people, animals and property with respect, using good manners, dressing appropriately and by not using profanity. You will be personally responsible for any damage caused as a result of your behavior. Be a good citizen by participating fully and helping those around you have positive experiences. Know that bullying of any type is illegal and prohibited. Unacceptable behavior will result in disciplinary action. If you refuse to accept the rules of the camp or to abide by the decisions of the camp leaders, you will be dismissed from camp. Camp fees are not refunded for dismissal. Campers are not allowed to bring cell phones to camp. If found with a cell phone at camp, it will be confiscated by the camp group and returned at the end of camp. I have read the 4-H Camp Code of Conduct and agree to abide by these expectations. As a camper, I understand that misbehavior may result in dismissal from camp.
