We look forward to showcasing our drills for family and friends at ELITE DRILL TEAM WINS 1ST PLACE AT KY STATE COMPETITION If we can dream it and believe it, we can achieve it! Congratulations to our own Elite Riders for their winning performance at Kentucky State Competition in Louisville on July 7th! The Senior Champion Team rode to victory in the small division of 12 teams. There was much celebrating in our midst, especially after receiving Reserve Champion last year at State. Our Junior Team placed 10th in the same small division. This was their first state competition and they achieved great success with just four months of training! Many thanks to our Coach Sarah Kahmann, who led the young women in their drills. Also, thank you to the parents and supporters who helped in every way. 2 the Boone County Fair on Monday night, August 7. Come see what all the excitement is about! We welcome new members and invite you to learn more about us. Drill Team is an excellent way to make lasting friendships, learn to ride well, and represent our county. Youth riders must be at least 9 years of age to join the drill team. If interested, you may contact Pamela Pickett at VISIT US AT THE FAIR! The 4-H Council sells cold Pepsi products and bottles of water during the week of the fair. This is the 4-H council s fundraiser for the year. The 4-H council provides funding for 4-H scholarships, trainings, and 4-H camp. Come out and support the 4-H Council! 2017 FAIR DEVELOPMENTS If you have entered 4-H projects in the Boone County Fair in the past and plan on doing so again this year, you need to know that there are several changes in the types of items you can enter. The most notable changes come under the Arts & Crafts category as well as Photography. For full details of the changes, please stop by the Extension Office for the updated information. BOONE COUNTY FAIR FRUITS AND VEGETABLES BARN ENTRY CHANGES If you plan on entering any 4-H fruits and vegetables in the county fair this summer, please note that entries must now be submitted on Monday, August 7 from 2:00-7:00 pm. 4-H FAIR PASSES Fair passes are now available to those 4-H members (ages 9-18) and Cloverbuds (ages 5-8) who turned in their H enrollment forms prior to June 1, Parents and siblings do not qualify for a free fair pass. The pass will be good BOONE COUNTY for gate entry the entire week of the fair, but does not include rides. Please don t lose your pass as it will not be reissued. ATTENTION! If you participated in 4-H Project Classes this summer or if you have completed projects on your own, remember to enter your items in the Boone County Fair! The entry date for projects is Monday, August 7 from 11:00 pm- 4:00 pm in the Lutes Floral Hall at the fairgrounds. *Some items may require a photo of the item s use in your home or may require other documentation. You can check with your class instructor or a 4-H agent if you are not sure. Call the Extension Office at with questions. TEEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are looking for middle and high school teen 4-H members that are interested in volunteering at the Boone County Fair! 3 SAVE THE DATE! KY ISSUES CONFERENCE 2017 IS SEPTEMBER 28-OCTOBER 1 The 2017 Issues Conference takes place at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center in Jabez, KY. During this conference, high school juniors and seniors will select an issue that they are concerned about and briefly research the topic. They are given the opportunity to share their ideas and collaborate with other 4-H ers from around the state to identify and address local issues. Adult facilitators work with delegates, leading them in the process of preparing a simulated presentation to a community board. Following the conference, our county team will have the opportunity to submit a mini-grant proposal addressing an identified local issue! Horse News H HORSE DATES TO REMEMBER Boone County 4-H Horse Show August 9 LOOKOUT HILLS HORSE LOVERS Are you a horse lover? If so, come join the LookOut Hills Horse Lovers group! Our goal is to expose horse lovers to all the fun and responsibilities that horses have to offer. We have two age available for participation: 4-8 year olds that meet at 6:00 pm, and 9-17 year olds that meet at 7:00 pm. You do not need to own a horse to join. We will meet at LookOut Hills Farm in Burlington one Friday a month to learn about and ride horses. The dates for 2017 are: August 18, September 15, and October 20 (wear costumes for the Halloween party!). If you need directions or more information, please call Donna Bray at APPLY FOR SPECIAL 4-H FAIR AWARDS OUTSTANDING 4-H ER AWARD Two 4-H ers (Jr. and Sr.) are selected annually, based on the number of points accumulated throughout the fair week with their exhibits in the 4-H division (Cloverville, fruits and vegetables, horse and livestock). CLOVERVILLE 4-H AWARDS Presented to two 4-H ers, one high-point Jr. and one high-point Sr. from exhibits in Cloverville (Floral Hall). Applications are available at the Extension Office or online at cloverville and are due by September 22, Awards will be given at the annual Achievement Banquet. YOUNG GUNS June and July have been very eventful for the Young Guns! After weeks of practicing, the Young Guns traveled to Broadbent Arena in Louisville where they took second place in the state 4-H drill team competition. Just a week later, they traveled to the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington where they dazzled the crowds at the 29th Annual Breyerfest. Next, the Young Guns will be performing at the Boone County Fair in early August. Come out and see a great show! The Young Guns are always excited about getting new riders! Look in the September newsletter for the date and time. Also, the September newsletter will have more club dates scheduled along with community service opportunities. Call Christy at for additional information. 4-H LIVESTOCK PICNIC: LET S CELEBRATE! The 4-H Livestock Club will be hosting a picnic on Sunday, August 13 at the Boone County Fairgrounds after we clean up the grounds from fair week. Clean up will start at noon. Please help us tidy up the grounds and stay for lunch afterwards. Each family is asked to bring a side dish to share. Hot dogs, buns, and drinks will be provided! to all the 4-H livestock exhibitors and country ham participants at the Kentucky State fair! Boone County 4-H Proud! TOP 12 WEEK Three Boone County 4-H Livestock Judging members attended Top 12 week! Chevy Vaske, Anna Meyers, and Blair Cupps were chosen for this honor because of their high performance at the State Livestock Judging Contest in June. They traveled around to different farms within Kentucky and surrounding states working to improve their livestock judging skills. Congratulations, we are proud of you! 5 BOONE COUNTY 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING TEAM DOES IT AGAIN AT STATE COMPETITION The sixteen-member Livestock Judging team competed at the state contest on June 20, 2017 in Powderly, KY. For the third year in a row, Boone County won first place overall! Success doesn t come easy, though. They start practicing in the fall with weekly practices and attend at least 7-8 competitions throughout the year. A big shout out to Rosemary Mastin, who coaches the team, and all the parents who are also a big part of their success! Congratulations once again on a job well done! 6 EXTREME ENTOMOLOGY Extreme Entomology club members are scheduled to work at the 4-H drink booth at the Boone County Fair on Monday, August 7 from 4:00-8:00 pm. Contact Diane at or diane.fritz@kctcs.edu to relay when you can work. Shifts can be 1-2 hours. Club members should have their fair pass to be able to enter the fair free of charge when working the booth. Parents are welcome to help as well. ELECTRONICS CLUB Now that we have learned some of the letters used to represent logic gate inputs, we'll now learn special techniques on how to design circuits based on what you want. Want a circuit that determines when two sensors detect an object or light source? How about a logic circuit that can add and subtract numbers? These things and more can be constructed using the two techniques that will be covered at our next meeting on August 15 from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Lutes Room at the Extension Office. WIGGLES AND WAGS DOG CLUB Last month we set up a booth at Pet Fest, where we sold toys and bandanas and collected donations. We are currently preparing for the dog show at the fair on August 12. We will not have a meeting this month due to the fair. PAWS AND CLAWS CAT CLUB For our July 12 meeting, Christy Eastwood reviewed the guidelines for showing cats at the Boone County Fair Cat Show, which will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, August 11. AEROSPACE CLUB Saturday, August 5 is the Aerospace Club's last outdoor meeting at the Nature Center. Come anytime between 10:00 am-12:00 pm to launch model rockets and try out the drone in our obstacle course. Club members will have several additional aviation events to go to now through Labor Day weekend. We plan to visit Wright Patterson Air Force Base Museum, visit local RC airshows, and launch rockets with a sanctioned National Association of Rocketry Club. us at bcaeroclub@gmail.com for details about all events.
