1 CALIFORNIA ANGUS NEWS FALL/WINTER 2012 California Angus News is the official publication of the California Angus Association. What s inside 2 Your guide to fall production and consignment sales happening up and down the state. 4 California Angus breeders named in the 2012 American Angus Association Pathfinder Report. 4 Tee it up for a good cause by participating in the 6 th Annual California Angus Breeders Golf Tourney. 6 California Angus Days brings Angus breeders together to enjoy the annual female sale, membership meeting, banquet and jackpot show. 8 California Angus producers in the winner s circle in 2012 at the National Western Stock Show, Western National Angus Futurity and California State Fair. 10 California Angus Association set to launch new website design with more user-friendly features. 11 California Angus breeders making headlines in 2012 at the state, regional and national levels. Tis the season California seedstock producers will offer up their best spring and fall yearlings during the 2012 fall bull sale season. For details on each production or consignment sale, see page 2. On Sept. 3, the fall bull sale season will officially be underway in California with just over 2,500 Angus bulls expected to sell at auction over the next two months during 19 production sales, seven consignment sales and one bull test sale. Seedstock producers are optimistic about the demand for Angus genetics during the fall sale season. California commercial producers can choose to buy bulls privately at the ranch, through pre-season Internet sales or purchase bulls at fall production or consignment sales. The majority of bulls are sold at production sales each fall. Larger producers hold events at the ranch, where buyers can come and preview the bulls the day prior and bid at the sale through a live auction. Smaller producers group together to hold sales at ranches or auction markets. Breeders can market their bulls through consignment sales. This fall, producers can choose to enter their bulls into consignment sales at Madera, Visalia, Templeton, Turlock, Famoso, Galt, Shasta or through the Cal Poly Bull Test Sale. For details on these consignments sales and all of the upcoming production sales, see page 2. Ty Byrd of Byrd Cattle Company (BCC), Red Bluff, maintains a steady focus on customer service throughout all facets of his bull sales. BCC offers extensive assistance to its customers, specializing in marketing calves sired by BCC bulls. In addition, BCC designs breeding programs and advises on sire selection, helps coordinate vaccination and mineral programs and upon request, assists customers in obtaining the proper certifications needed to realize the most profit. BCC is family owned and operated and has been in business for more than three decades. Our valued customers have access to the network of feeders, marketing cooperatives and other breeders who want cattle with BCC blood behind them. At Byrd Cattle Company, you don t buy a bull, you buy a part of our program and become a member of our family with that comes the added value and buyer confidence we have worked hard to establish, says Byrd. We have built a reputation for producing cost-efficient cattle that require minimum maintenance, while excelling in a forage-based environment. We breed high quality cattle backed by elite genetics, dependable data and unmatched customer service. At BCC, we have only one goal to produce cattle that will make our customers more profitable, says Byrd. The main advantage of having production bull sale is that producer has total control over the sale, says Byrd. Everything from hiring the sale staff and designing and placing advertising, to how the bulls are displayed, the order they re sold in and collection of sale proceeds are all our responsibility. We sell the vast majority of our bulls in our fall sale held at one of our ranches, so we are able to show a potential buyer the dam of almost any bull at a moment s notice, says Byrd. BCC tests all of its bulls for Residual Feed Efficiency (RFI). RFI measures the difference between an animal s actual feed intake in relation to the animals expected feed intake. RFI allows producers to select animals that will reach the same production levels, yet do so while consuming up to 30 percent less feed. To put this in perspective, with the skyrocketing feed costs anticipated for this winter, a producer could easily see a difference of $500 in feed costs between his more efficient and least efficient cows. Multiply that times 10 cows and you ve got $5,000 or 100 cows and that s $50,000. The bottom line is that there are substantial savings to be realized by selecting for feed efficiency. I d advise bull buyers to do research on the programs behind the bulls. Do you simply want to buy a bull, or do you want help marketing his calves? I would also tell potential buyers to get ahead of the curve and really pay attention to feed efficiency. Those that utilize that data now will be in the driver s seat for many years to come. There are astounding differences in feed efficiency on Angus bulls with comparable EPDs and dollar indices, says Byrd. Longtime Fresno County commercial producer Howard Buster Ford, Clovis, says that the most useful expected progeny difference (EPD) for him is the birth weight prediction. Calving ease is the most important focus for my first-calf heifers. After I use low-birth weight bulls on my heifers, I move them out onto my cowherd, says Ford. He sells his calves under the American Angus Association's AngusSource program. AngusSource is a USDA Process Verified Program for Angus-sired calves that documents source, group age and a minimum of 50 percent Angus genetics. Ford is gearing up for bull buying season and plans to make his bull purchases from California seedstock producers. He feels there is a great selection right here in California, where he can find low birth-weight bulls to meet his needs. He chooses to attend ranch production sales because of his business relationship with each particular seedstock producer and his trust in the quality of product produced. Jim Vietheer, Wilton, owns and operates Big Jim's Cattle Service working on sale cattle, show cattle and display bulls. Vietheer developed HAVE Angus with partner Mel Hansen, Windsor, and his family in the 1990s. The veteran cattlemen combined forces to produce top-notch bulls for commercial cattlemen and females that excel both on the show ring and in the pasture. They are at the top of their game, having exhibited the champion haltered Angus bull at the Red Bluff Bull Sale in Red Bluff, two of the last three years, as well as having consigned the top-selling bull at the California Angus Breeders Bull Sale last year in Turlock. Cattle at HAVE Angus are selected for disposition and structural soundness, along with genetic superiority and reliable expected progency EPDs. Our selection process differs from many producers as we select more for phenotype with acceptable EPDS because we are in the shrinking number of breeders who still show their cattle. We have been rewarded by how well our bulls have done at consignment sales. We don t intend to take bull market by storm, however, we will continue to produce bulls that are pleasing to the eye and to judges with EPDS that will work in the industry, says Vietheer. Vietheer offers free delivery for bull buyers in the surrounding areas, provides complete genetic and health data on each bull and will replace any bull when necessary. He also offers cash back discounts for repeat buyers. Vietheer promotes his bulls through personal phone calls, s, print ads and through social media, such as Facebook and the HAVE Angus website. Consignment sales have worked well for us in the past, where we have a following at those sales and people look for our bulls and know what they re going to find. Vietheer says, Consignment sales save us time and provide an opportunity for buyers to compare our bulls to other breeder s genetics. My advice is for buyers not to be overly concerned about some genetic traits because it may only be the flavor-of-themonth and to select for what they think will work in their program. Like most people, I like to look at cattle and be pleased with what I see not what I see on paper only, says Vietheer. This year offers a variety of choices for bull buyers throughout California. Each venue provides a different set of advantages and tools for beef producers to improve the genetics and efficiency of their herd. Improvements in selection, EPDs and efficiency have made the current bull market competitive and comprehensive for bull buyers.

2 from the president Dear California Angus Breeders, Greetings from the California Angus Association! As we enter fall with our seasonal newsletter full of information and updates, we have been extremely busy this past summer with participation and accolades from across the country. From national shows to leadership conferences, to the recent show circuit, our members have represented the California Angus Association (CAA) at the highest level. Be sure to check Newsmakers on page 11 for all the results. I applaud these individuals for not only their fine representation of our Association on the national scene, but their time and effort to participate in these events and activities. We have the benefit of living one of the most desirable places in the world, but our members have to make quite an effort in terms of time and resources to make this travel happen. The finest example of this persistence is the California Junior Angus families that ventured back to Louisville, Ky., for the National Junior Angus Show in July. Once again, we were represented in tremendous fashion with an outstanding group of young California Angus breeders that earned many awards and achievements throughout the week, including the Owned State Best 5 Head. Hats off to the members of the California Junior Angus Association (CJAA) and CJAA advisors Amanda Leo, Snelling, and Casey Gudel, Wilton. This fall, the CAA schedule is chock-full of bull and female sales, meetings and industry events. One date I want you all to know about is the 6 th Annual Breeder s Cup Golf Tournament set for Friday, Oct. 5, at Pheasant Run Golf Club, Chowchilla. CAA Past President Carter Pierce, Selma, established this event in 2006 and has worked hardhard to develop this tournament into one of the largest contributors to the CJAA Scholarship Fund. Not only is this event a fun time with fellow breeders and friends, but it also supports our next generation of Angus breeders. All proceeds go to the scholarship fund, a tremendously important cause with today s costs of tuition and fees. Lets support our juniors! Another topic I wanted to bring to your attention is the renewal of the agreement with Pfizer Animal Genetics, New York, N.Y. This agreement is a special program for state associations that offers rebates off its HD50K tests purchased by producers in California. Like last year, the CAA will receive a $10 rebate from every test purchased between July 1 and Oct. 31, CAA can then use those funds for educational programs for membership and juniors. This is a very exciting opportunity, so if you haven t tested that donor or herd bull yet, be sure to get your test in. I d like to thank Pfizer Animal Genetics Territory Manager Larry Gran for his continued support. And, if you haven t met Larry yet, be sure to track him down during one of the fall bull sales listed on page 2. On a solemn note, I wanted to speak briefly about three important individuals marked the passing of Debbie Parreira of Deep Well Angus, Los Banos; Mark Perez of Mission Angus Ranch, Crows Landing; and Gary Stoller of Bear Mountain Angus Ranch, Caldwell, Idaho. Debbie, along with her husband Paul Parreira, was a past advisor of the CJAA and brought up two wonderful children, Paul Jr. and Melissa, through that same program. Active in the CAA, Mark served as the CAA Vice President for two years during his six years on the CAA Board of Directors. He was involved in many facets of the agriculture industry, but donated as much time and resources to the CAA as any board member we ve had. Originally from Angels Camp when they started into the Angus business, Gary and his family were very active in the CAA during their time in California, and continued with their move to Idaho and eventually Nebraska. I had the pleasure to know and work with all three of these individuals and one thing that each of these great people had in common, is that they GAVE more to this Association than ever took from it. And it s because of people like them, that we have the luxury of being as strong of an Association that we are today. All three will certainly be missed, but I can tell you that their memories and impact on the CAA will not be forgotten. On behalf of the CAA, thanks for a great summer and we look forward to seeing you all this fall! - John Dickinson, CAA President The Fall line-up The fall bull sale season has arrived in California. 4 Pathfinder report 12 This year s American Angus Association Pathfinder Report was released in April with 44 California Angus breeders making the report. The Borror Family of Tehama Angus Ranch, Gerber, leads the way for California with 21 cows named. The Donati family of Donati Ranch, Oroville, ranks second with 18 cows listed. Joe and Michele Sammis of Sammis Angus Ranch, Dorris, and David Medeiros of Rancho Casino, Denair, have 12 Pathfinders each. Silveira Bros., Firebaugh, rounds out the top five with 8 cows named. The report identifies cows that have excelled in production based on Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR) records of performance. A minimum of three calves from a cow are used to determine her regularity of calving and ability to produce superior calves for Weaning Weight year after year.
