2 Welcome to our 12th Annual Performance Genetics Meat and Guts Bull Sale. Today we continue to offer the same genetics that have proven to be performance genetics. These genetics are proven in the pasture and the feed. We continue to search for genetics that will lead the way into the future. The Gary Ward Family Gary, Madelyn, John, James & Katie I m pleased to have David Medeiros of Rancho Casino and David Dal Porto of Dal Porto Livestock to be part of the sale again. They bring a lifetime of experience in the Angus business to the sale. They are outstanding producers and leaders in the cattle industry. I have had the privilege of working with both of them. Our cows are raised in a practical manner. We select for productive cows that are sound of foot, body type, fertility and performance. Our cows spend the summer in the Carson Valley and winter near Clements, California. We calve in mid-august and wean calves when they arrive back in the valley in the spring. The bulls are held over on grass during the summer. The bulls are shipped to Snyder Livestock in Yerington, Nevada, to be grown into sale bulls. All Angus bulls have been DNA tested, ultrasounded and will have genomic enhanced EPDs. All bulls have passed a fertility test and are sifted for soundness. We will have updated information available sale day. Please feel free to contact us if we can be of any assistance for you. We will continue to sell bulls on the video format. John Dickinson and Jake Parnell will be with us again to handle the internet sale. They bring a full service of management, specializing in purebred and commercial livestock marketing. Herd Health All bulls will be accompanied by proper certification for immediate inter - state shipment. Bulls are negative for BVD PI and have been vaccinated for anaplasmosis. Herd veterinarian is Randy Wallstrum, D.V.M. Breeding Guarantee Bulls will be semen checked with a passing grade and are guaranteed breeders. Guarantee is limited to purchase price. We reserve the right to have our veterinarian re-examine any bull examined by a purchaser s vet and claimed to be a non-breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from a bull will freeze. All bulls sell with a one-year unconditional guarantee. Yearling weights and ultrasound data will be available sale day on the sale supplement. Trucking We will be glad to assist you in making the best possible trucking ar - range ments. We are offering free delivery up to 500 miles to a central location for any bull purchased for $3,500 or more. Delivery on bulls costing less than $3,500 will not exceed $200 to a central location. Registration Certificates Bulls will be transferred through the respective breed association to the buyer at the seller s expense. Each buyer must be sure to give the sale clerk the proper name and address for making transfers. An updated certificate of registration will be mailed to the new owner at a later date. Note Announcements made sale day from the auction block will take prec - edence over statements in the sale book or advertising. About EPDs The available Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) numbers are included in the catalog and were current as of 2/23/18, as reported by the individual s association of registry. EPD is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in each of the traits listed, relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the breed database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Performance records allow you to compare individuals of the same herd; EPDs allow you to compare individuals within a breed. EPDs do not allow for comparison of individ uals of different breeds. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Eval ua tion (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an I, and may or may not include the animal s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. A higher number indicates greater potential for calving ease. Birth Weight (BW) (pounds) is based on the measured birth weight of progeny, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value, the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use on heifers. Weaning Weight (WW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 120 and 280 days of age. Values are adjusted to 205 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of an an -imal s genetic merit for growth to early ages. Yearling Weight (YW) (pounds) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 320 and 440 days of age, adjusted to 365 days and for age of dam. This EPD is the best single estimate of a sire s genetic merit for postweaning growth. Milk (pounds) is an estimate of an animal s milking ability. For sires, this EPD indicates the effect of the daughters milking ability, inherited from the sire, on the weaning and yearling weights of her calves. Watch the sale & bid online! Another bull to use on heifers. Ward Ranches purchased its first Salers bull at the Western Spotlight Salers Sale in Galt, California, over 30 years ago now. We had an Angus-based commercial cow herd, and Salers were new to the industry at the time. We tried them because of the calving ease and the marbling quality. We started with 25 to 30 virgin Angus heifers that we bred to this Salers bull, making the calves 50% Salers/50% Angus. The following fall when we calved these heifers, we were surprised at the calving ease and the vigor in these calves. We were immediately sold on the two breeds being compatible with each other. The Angus and Salers offered both the maternal and carcass qualities that we wanted in our herd. As we started to put together a purebred operation, we knew the qualities we had wanted in our commercial cattle operation, and we worked toward producing bulls that would work for the commercial cattleman. We have tried for generations now to build a cow herd that will produce bulls that pass on the traits that lead to profitability for you, the rancher. We want to create moderate-framed individuals that are easy fleshing and carry a of extra rib (i.e., guts). They need to have the ability to process grass and convert it into pounds of flesh. Another goal was to produce cattle that have optimal feed conversion in the feed. This sale offers you purebred Angus bulls, purebred Salers bulls and composite Salers/Angus bulls whichever fits your individual program or preference. Research has shown that both breeds demonstrate the traits for calving ease, maternal ability, weight gain, feed performance and carcass merit.
