The lesbar herd name was started by len s parents some 60 plus years ago with a very functional and successful Horned Hereford herd. I was raised milking cows with my parents and siblings, along with the dairy they had a small commercial herd which later turned into a large purebred Angus herd. With the influence of our father s strong cattle sense we built our own herd. In the fall of 1986 we registered our first Angus Calves with the lesbar bar prefix, and have been building ever since. Our main objective over the years has been to concentrate on the strength of our mother cows. Having milked cows for many of my younger years I have a great appreciation for a proper udder and milking ability and what goes along with that. len is our body and foot structure man and has strove to find bulls that would pass his inspection which is no easy task. With the two of us working together we are very proud of the Angus herd we have today. Our herd is basically built on 5 strong cow families 3 Red, Lakima s, Syringa s and Leah s and 2 Black s Barbie s and Miss Burgess s. The beginnings of our Cow Families consist of three dispersal purchases, Red Towaw Lakima 14M and four daughters and granddaughters were purchased privately from Karl Lyons. Karl had purchased 14M from Towaw as a junior project. enel Miss Burgess 44M was purchased at Sjogrens 1988 dispersal sale. Red Maybridge Leah 20X along with her daughter 13Z were purchased in 1991 at the Romar dispersal. These three purchases along with 2 females from eis Angus, eis Barb 155T, and Red eis Syringa 160A. These 5 females have been the basis of our lesbar herd. Notable Sires Purchased and used over the years are Red Royal Patriot 123Z, Red Roselea Beau 142D both out of the Royal Valley Bull Sales. Red Towaw Powerlite 28X and Red Towaw Expansion 169 from Towaw Red Angus. Red DMM Traction 98R, Red eis Aviator 67T and eis Kodiak 21T, and Red Northline Fat Tony 604U. We also were lucky enough to be original semen package purchasers of Red YYY Knight 640F, and Red Towaw Indeed 104H. Other than these sires we have concentrated on using our own bulls from our best cows, which has worked in our favour. Over the past 30 years we have had awesome times with our cattle made many new friends and had some very prosperous partnerships. Red Roselea Beau 142D won National Champion Red Angus Bull in both 1995 and 1996, he not only was a champion in the show ring, more notably he is a an elite Sire with 12 daughters being elite dams. Red Northline Fat Tony 604U won Denver Champion Red Angus bull in We must admit that the most exciting thing was being the breeder and part owner of Red DMM lesbar Barndance 35X who was a champion many times over, the most prestigious of all, he was named Alberta Supreme Champion Bull at Farmfair International This is the ultimate high of our history. Now that we have calved his daughters we know he is a true Champion. Along the way we raised two awesome children, Kurt born in 1988 and Amy in 1989, these kids were raised with love and work ethic. They knew that the cows and work always came first before play, so consequently there wasn t a lot of play time. We are proud to say they have grown up and became really good people we are and always will be very proud of. Kurt s life path has taken him away from the farm, he is an awesome young man and everything he does he does well. PUREBRED BREEDER OF THE YEAR 2015 KURT LESSMAN Amy married Cody Miller in 2011, they have given us two beautiful grandchildren, Lincoln Alec in 2013 and Avery Marie in They are in the cattle industry with Cody s parents. Amy and Kurt have a few Angus females and actively take part in breeding and marketing decisions. As I write this with mixed feelings, over the past year of deciding whether having this sale is or is not the best thing for us to do. We have struggled with the best way in which to do this, if you any of you folks really know len, you know that he would not be a happy man if he was completely cow less, because he is a true cowboy at heart. Because of the dry conditions this year we have made a few changes to our plan of action. We have decided to keep our 8 year old cows and older, selling all of our females and their off spring, W s and younger. This will leave us with about 30 older females for our base for a small commercial herd. len said it the best one day when we were lamenting about the pro s and con s of our decision. He said this My head is saying I am not ready yet but everyday my body is telling me I am. In closing, we have been doing what we love for the past 30 years, trying our darndest to raise the best mother cows there is, and our herd has never looked better! len & Darlene lessman P.S. We feel the need to add a short post script to our history. It has been a very stressful summer, not unlike the most of us in the business, dealing with the drought. We are very worried about how this drought is going to affect the results of the sale of our life's work. We sometimes wondered if the sale should be put off for another year. Unfortunately in mid July our mind was made up for us with the passing of our true friend, neighbour and land lord Allen Fresher. We have been lucky enough to rent Allen s 2 quarter sections for the last ten years. With these extra acres we have been able to grow our herd numbers to what they are today. Now that his estate has put this land up for sale, our hand has been forced and it is necessary to go ahead with our sale. We miss you Allen, the community is not the same without you! It was at this Show that Samurai caught the eye of William McLaren of Netherton Angus, of Scotland. In a quote from William McLaren Samurai was recognized by many breeders as the best bull to come from Canada and the one which was regarded as saving the breed when it was at its lowest ebb. He sired more Champions at the major Shows in the UK than any other bull in the modern era. Here in Canada Samurai has the sired many, but to name a few, Red KBJ Sam s Prospector 133Z, a major sire at Royal Valley and Champion in his own right. Prospectors Flush mate Red KBJ Lassie 133X was owned and shown by the two Bryan s Bryan Mackenzie and Bryan Walters she in turn raised Presidio 5Z. Sam s Retro 18B s dam is Lot #82 she is also the dam of Reference Sire BCC 102Y. We hand and pasture bred with 18B this spring. He is a larger framed bull with an out cross pedigree, we have all confidence that he will produce calves with performance and style, and maybe a little more size that some may need.
