4 Important Information for Livestock Members Rules for Enrolling in 4-H, FFA or as an Independent Member There have been several questions concerning enrollment as an independent exhibitor for the Mariposa County Fair, or to change enrollment from 4-H to FFA or vice versa. The rules are as follows: 4-H/FFA/Grange You may change your PROJECT membership one time during a calendar year (January 1 to December 31) by properly notifying both organizations of your intentions. If a 4-H member plans on transferring to FFA or independent, that member must notify the UCCE office 120 or 60 days before fair to be qualified to show at the 2008 fair. (depending on species) The same SPECIE may not be carried in both organizations, although you may have a leadership project in one and the project in the other (e.g. Teen leader for sheep in 4-H and a sheep project in FFA). Ownership requirements must be observed: (Bill of sale) * 60 consecutive days sheep, swine, veal, goats * 120 consecutive days beef and horses * 30 consecutive days rabbits & poultry Projects must be under the direct supervision of a project leader, advisor or FFA instructor. Project enrollment: Must be enrolled in the project at least 60 days (120 days for beef and horses) prior to the first day of the fair and that any member who has been a 4-H/FFA/Grange member WITHIN 60 days (120 days for beef and horses) of the first day of the fair is NOT eligible to show as an Independent in that project. This applies to all projects including stills. 4-H POLICY IN MARIPOSA REQUIRES ENROLLMENT BY DECEMBER 15. Independent Ownership and enrollment requirement must be observed: (Bill of Sale) * 60 consecutive days sheep, swine, veal, goats * 120 consecutive days beef and horses * 30 consecutive days rabbits & poultry Must have supervision of project by parent or advisor Shall keep management records as provided by the Fair management Provide a picture of their animal, proof of ownership (permanent tag, tattoo, and/or hog ear notch information) as per Ownership ruling above. Youth may transfer a PROJECT from one organization to another only ONCE DURING A CALENDAR YEAR. If you have questions about 4-H enrollment, please call the 4-H office for clarification. Questions about exhibiting your project in the Fair should be directed to the Fair Office at

5 Ironstone Concours d Elegance 4-H Fundraiser On Saturday, September 27 at the Ironstone Vineyard in Murphys, the Ironstone Concours d Elegance 4-H Fundraiser will take place. This event is a vintage car show and some of the proceeds go to the California 4-H Program the Foothill Counties 4-H programs, and supports the California State Fair. For the past five years, the Foothill 4-H Counties have had members participate by doing presentations, displays, and give out the prizes to the car winners. This year will be the same. The All-Stars will be presenting the gifts to the car winners while other 4-H youth will do their presentations, do public speaking, and put gift bags together. Mariposa County 4-H Council and 4-H Staff would like to see many youth from our county attend this event to share what the 4-H youth have been doing in their projects and more. Members who attend get in for free along with one adult. If you are interested on attending this event, please contact Donna at the UCCE Office. Registration forms will be available in August. To Be a Successful Leader: Be organized and set ground rules. Greet & engage the members especially NEW members. Have eye contact with the members. Don t baby-sit. Remember that you just can t please all the people, all the time. Change things up by adding different activities and field trips. Members must have sweat equity in fundraising. Know that all kids do not get along, no matter how hard you try. Understand that some parents don t realize the time it takes to be a leader. Grin a lot. Also taking deep breaths and counting to10 does help. To Be a Successful Member: Keep your paperwork for each project in one folder. Have a 4-H Calendar, post it where the family can see it and mark down all your activities. After each meeting write down the time, day and place of the meeting and what you did or learned. Be responsible for your own project, attend the required meetings for club and project, make your commitments. Call your leader or CCL if you have any questions regarding the project. Welcome new members, always be kind and respectful. Thank your CCL and project leaders after each meeting, and occasionally with a hand written note. To Be a Successful Parent of a Member: When possible, attend meetings with your child. After each meeting ask your child what they did at the meeting. Keep your commitments and help your child keep theirs. Pick up your child on time. Volunteer to do something with the project or with the club. Contact the leader or CCL with any issues or questions.

8 Questions and Answers about 4-H Secondary Auto Liability Insurance for 4-H Volunteer Leaders What is the minimum primary automobile coverage required of a 4-H volunteer to be covered under UC s secondary automobile liability insurance? University policy requires employees or volunteers who are driving on University business to maintain insurance coverage in the following amounts: $50,000 for personal injury to, or death of, one person; $100,000 for injury to, or death of, two or more persons in one accident; and $50,000 for property damage. These limits are commonly referred to as: 50/100/50. These University minimums are higher than the State minimum insurance requirements of 15/30/5. If a volunteer driver is involved in an accident, the secondary coverage from the University would apply only after the limits of the volunteers vehicle primary liability insurance policy have been reached. What if a 4-H volunteer does not have this minimum primary coverage? Are they afforded any UC automobile liability coverage? Are they still allowed to transport 4-H youth? If a 4-H volunteer does not maintain coverage in accordance with the University s minimums, and the auto accident occurred as part of a 4-H activity, then the volunteer would be responsible for paying the amount between their auto insurance maximum coverage limits and the University s minimums. I.e., if the volunteer has the State minimum coverage of 15/30/5 and is involved in an accident while on University business and the policy limits are exceeded the volunteer would be liable for the difference between their policy limits and the University s secondary coverage 50/100/50. Who pays for an automobile accident if I, as a UC volunteer, am negligent while driving my personal vehicle? If you are a formal volunteer who is involved in an automobile accident while in the course and scope of your UC activities, and you are found to be negligent, UC provides secondary coverage (as described above) after your personal auto insurance limits have been depleted. How does a 4-H volunteer file an automobile liability insurance claim? A claim is initiated by completing an incident report form and submitting it to the county UCCE office. The UCCE will forward the form to ANR Risk Services. The form is available from the UCCE office or from the Risk Services website at: Mosquito Fish Distribution The Department of Health and the University of California Cooperative Extension are working together to provide mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis, to residents of Mariposa County. Mosquito fish are proven to be efficient predators of mosquito larvae and have a wide range of temperature tolerance and thrive unless its water is highly polluted. Mosquito fish are idea for stock ponds, horse troughs, ornamental ponds which aren t chlorinated, and any pond which doesn t flow into a creek, river or lake. The mosquito fish distribution will be held 9 am 1 pm, May 3, 2008 in the parking area next to the UC Office at the Fairgrounds. If any 4-H youth wish to help in the fish distribution, please contact Karen

9 The Equine Experience By Tara and Morgan Tramontin Evergreen 4-H 4-H COUNCIL, CLUB & PROJECT NEWS For the weekend of April 4 th - 6 th, 2008 the horse project took our annual end of the year trip to the Equine Experience down in Paso Robles, Ca. The people who attended this event are as follows: Katy Casner, Jocelynn Barrington, Tara Tramontin, Morgan Tramontin, Mikeala Williams, Lindsey Crafts, and last but not least our wonderful parents and chaperones: Carol Suggs, Becky Crafts, Sarah Williams, Jeanne Casner, and David and Heidi Estep. We left early that Friday morning and carpooled down to Paso Robles. We arrived just in time to see the Mounted Cowboy Shooting, which was interesting enough to hold your attention yet loud enough to make you jump in your seat! The next event that we attended was a demonstration by Bob Avila on How to Meet Your Horse Halfway. After that we decided to do some shopping and most everyone found something they liked. Later we saw an awesome demonstration by Richard Winters on Problem Solving. The last event that we saw that day was the Ranch Horse Showdown. Then we went out to dinner at Big Bubba s Bad BBQ and some of the girls were able to ride the mechanical bull they had there, then to end our day we headed back to the Hampton Inn to get a good nights rest. Saturday morning we all had a difficult time deciding what we wanted to eat out of the hotel s continental breakfast. The first clinician we saw on Saturday was Kerry Kuhn who was doing a demonstration on how to cross obstacles. We also watched a demonstration by Chris Cox on Advanced Horsemanship. Later that afternoon we saw the Colt Starting event which included three young, untrained horses and three horse trainers: Kerry Kuhn, Patrick Hooks, and Carol Schryver. The trainer s were expected to be able to ride their horses at the walk, trot, and canter and take their horse through an obstacle course, and here is where it gets tough the trainer s were only aloud to work with their horses for a total of three hours over the weekend, the winner received a 10,000 check! After the trainer s had picked their horse they had an hour and a half that day to work with their horse. The time seemed to pass as quickly as we watched the technique and process of each trainer and colt. We came back on Sunday to watch the rest of the Colt Starting event. After the last hour an a half went by it was Showtime! The trainer s were able to get their horses to go through most of the obstacles but in the end Kerry Kuhn was the winner and received 10,000 dollar check. Overall everyone had a great time learning new things, hanging out, and making memories, it really was an Equine experience! Japanese Exchange Program One of Mariposa County s 4-H members, Candi Smith, will be heading to Japan in July as part of the Japanese Exchange Program-LABO. Hopefully Candi will share her experience with all the clubs when she returns. Have a great time Candi! Delegates to Japan: Back Row: Marc Larsen-Hallock, Pauline Smoke, Ryan Foster, Evan Cutter, Rachel Hazeltine, Candi Smith; Middle Row: Anna Sakoi, Erica Schimmel, Margery Magill, Nathan Ward, Cooper Payne; Front Row: Heather Nodelman, Andrew Martinez, Kiku Alvidrez.
