I'm very excited to be the 4-H Agent for Crowley and Otero Counties and am looking forward to meeting lots of new people! Since graduating from the University of Wyoming in 2010 I have lived on my family's ranch in Northwestern Nebraska. For the last 5 years, I had worked in the Nebraska Extension Sioux County Office as the Office Manager and later as the 4-H Assistant. My priority is offering a wide range of programs that utilize STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) and career readiness concepts, and also recognize the tradition of 4-H. What is 4-H Interview Judging? Interview Judging is an excellent opportunity for 4-H youth enrolled in General/ Natural Resources and Family Consumer Science projects to showcase their project work. During interview judging, members meet one-on-one with the judge to discuss their project. The judge will ask questions about the project, the process of completing the project, skills learned and problems encountered. Judges will make suggestions to help members with problems and challenges with the project. State Fair Exhibit Requirements Be sure to read the 2016 State Fair 4-H Exhibit Requirements! They can be found on the State 4-H website or contact your local extension office. There have been several changes made to the project requirements and you can avoid the surprise and disappointment on exhibit day if you take the time to read about your project now. These requirements spell out what the required exhibit is for general and family and consumer science projects, and special 4-H events held during State Fair. We follow the same exhibit requirements for Exhibit Day as the State Fair.

Exhibitors may Nominate as many as they would like, however, only four (4) pens may be brought to the Fair. The chicks would need to have been purchased and/ or hatched by July 4 th for the Fryer class competition and the Broiler class would have been purchased and/or hatched by approximately April 11 th. There is also a Market Turkey class. The age requirement is 14 weeks for hens and 18 weeks for toms. Hens must weigh 14 pounds and toms 16 pounds. No turkey can weigh over 30 pounds. See your county Extension Office for the nomination forms.

15 Are You a Positive Role Model? As the busy season of competition and all the summer activities get underway, now is a good time to remind members, leaders and parents about the 4-H Code of Conduct. In effect, the code of conduct sets forth the expectation that youth will conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, use appropriate language, exhibit honesty, good sportsmanship and act as a positive role model. Older 4-H members especially need to be reminded of the importance of being a positive role model for younger members. Research suggests that youth between the ages of 8 and 10 are especially interested in imitating the behaviors of teenagers. When those teenagers are engaged in positive, thoughtful and productive behaviors, they are serving as positive role models. If however, they are behaving in negative, obnoxious and destructive ways, they are serving as negative role models. With either type of behavior, they are still role models. So, if you witness positive role modeling, praise those older youth who are setting a great example for younger members. On the other hand, if you witness negative role modeling, remind those older youth that they are being watched and potentially imitated. Project Demonstrations and Illustrated Talks We encourage 4-H members to do a project related demonstration and would like to have one for every project that a 4-H member enrolls in. We understand that this may not happen. If you do only one demonstration, make sure that you put it down in each of your project record books. The requirement is that a 4-H member does a demonstration. You will not be counted down for only doing one demonstration but the judges may comment that they would have liked to have seen a project related demonstration. Remember to put down the title of your demonstration and who was there. Community Service Projects One very integral part of 4-H is doing Community Service. Every member is expected to participate in at least one community service project each year. Be sure and share ideas for community service with your 4-H club and leaders. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and help your local community. Code of Conduct Colorado State University wants to provide an environment that is safe and proper for all of its 4-H participants. The code of conduct is not intended to restrict participation, but rather to enhance it so that all can receive the full benefit and educational experience from events and activities. The code of conduct spells out how 4-Hers, parents, and leaders are expected to conduct themselves when participating in 4-H activities. As a reminder, the State 4-H Code of Conduct form was included with your enrollment materials. When you signed the enrollment, you were stating that you had read the code of conduct and agree to comply with the rules and regulations set forth in the code of conduct. The Code of Conduct can be found on the state 4-H website, along with event etiquette and information on sportsmanship for participants, parents, and spectators. Let s all work to make each and every 4-H event or activity a positive experience for everyone involved. Adult Code of Conduct To contribute in a positive way to youth development Colorado 4-H Leaders, Volunteers, Parents and other adults will: Conduct themselves in a mature, courteous and respectful manner, use appropriate language, exhibit honesty, good sportsmanship and act as a positive role model. Provide a safe learning environment, free of physical abuse, mental abuse, ethnic, racial and sexual harassment or exploitation of the 4-H member. Adhere to all program rules, policies and guidelines including the State 4-H Dress Code and use of the 4-H Clover. When transporting 4-H members, have a valid Colorado driver's license and insurance as prescribed by Colorado law and maintain the vehicle so that it is safe and reliable for the conditions, weather, and distance for which it will be driven. Abstain from the use of alcohol and illegal drugs while participating in 4-H events/programs. These are not allowed at any 4-H sponsored program, event and/or activity where youth are present. Leaders should limit their tobacco use to areas where youth are not present. This applies to local club meetings, county, district, state, and national events. Respect the rights and authority of leaders, parents and Extension Agents. Refrain from physical or verbal abuse. Apply rules of safety to individuals, groups, and property. Accept personal responsibility for behavior. Conduct not in keeping with 4-H Youth Development standards will not be tolerated. Violation of items listed above will result in consequences to the participant. Law enforcement may be called and illegal behaviors may result in citations or arrest. Consequences may include removal, at the individuals' expense and without refund, from participation in the event; restitution or repayment of damages; sanctions on participation in future local, state, regional or national 4-H events; and forfeiture of financial support for this event. 4-H Leaders and volunteers serve at the request of Colorado State University Cooperative Extension. That request can be withdrawn for violations to this code, other reasons or no reason at any time.
