Studies show that youth, adults and organizations benefit when young people are allowed to be involved in the decision-making roles. 3 Congratulations!! John Allen, Dr. Frank Hodnett and Lucille Jones 2018 National Winner Excellence in 4-H Programming National Association of County Agriculture Agents John Allen, Socorro County Program Director/Extension Ag Agent Dr. Frank Hodnett, Professor, Agricultural and Extension Education (AXED) Lucille Jones, San Juan County 4-H Volunteer and NM 4-H Leaders Association Executive Board Member! Read the narrative below that was submitted for the award to learn about this great program. By Cheryl Butterfield 4-H Volunteer and Leadership Development Specialist The outdoor cooking track at the New Mexico 4-H Home Economics School couples life skill development along with STEM components of cooking foods outdoors. Started in 2012, Outdoor Cooking has seen an enrollment of 146 youth participants, 21 youth junior institutors and 20 adult volunteer leaders. This track highlights food safety, healthy eating habits, and cultural foods and explores old cooking technologies and innovative new outdoor cooking technologies. Youth master the use of chef s knives, Dutch ovens, and discos. Youth prepare a lunch and dinner meal for around 225 people each year. Youth walk away feeling empowered with the knowledge and skill set needed to cook healthy meals for their families. Youth practice making both Native American foods while learning the importance and histories behind these foods. New Mexican foods are also explored, including the use of our favorite fruit, the red and green chile. Youth learn all about food safety from the farm to the plate. The proper use of ice chests, the right cooking and holding temperatures, and how to serve foods are examples of how food safety is taught throughout the day. The outdoor cooking track also trains adult volunteer leaders in how to organize and deliver the program so that they can return home and teach these concepts to the local 4-H clubs. 8 Meet the Ambassadors Annick Ambrose State 4-H Ambassador Sandoval County I am serving as one of the 2018 State 4-H Ambassadors. 4-H has been such an instrumental part of my life and I really love everything about it. Through 4-H I have had chickens and dairy goats, and am so excited to have beautiful eggs and make new types of goat cheeses. I have learned how to sew and love getting to choose any pattern I want to make and then model it. 4-H has given me many opportunities to develop my public speaking skills. As club president and county council president I am able to use my public speaking skills to run meetings effectively. Through 4-H I have come to appreciate community; one of the reasons I wanted to run for the Ambassador position was to be a larger part of the 4-H community on the state level. As an Ambassador I want to share my enthusiasm for 4-H with new people across the state, and promote 4-H to the youth of New Mexico. Kaitlyn Kircher State 4-H Ambassador Roosevelt County My name is Kaitlyn Kircher and I am currently serving as this year s 2018 State 4-H Ambassador from Roosevelt County. Throughout my 4-H career I have learned the importance of leadership through watching others older than me succeed in their 4-H offices. 4-H has given me so much in the way of learning opportunities to help me advance my skills to help benefit others. 4-H has not only taught me about leadership, but about responsibility and communications as well. At first when deciding whether or not to apply, the main deciding point for me was knowing that I would get to make an impact on my fellow 4-H ers in my state. With acquiring this position, I get to show myself as a role model to those who look up to me. This organization has given me so many opportunities to keep moving forward in my 4-H career. Evan Webster State 4-H Ambassador Union County I m Evan Webster, one of your 2018 New Mexico 4-H Ambassadors. I ve been in 4-H for about seven years now. I started out as young as I could. My older sister, Avery, entered 4-H when she was 10, right after my family moved to New Mexico from Texas. I had never heard of 4-H and had never considered such a thing existing. I was only about 8 at that point and my world view was strictly limited to what I could see. 4-H changed that in a drastic way. I started to notice things about other people that I never noticed before. I started to understand my world a little better. On top of that, I learned how to talk to others. I had not known many people before, but now I knew lots. 4-H changed the world in my eyes. After I got to thinking about it, I realized that I wanted to help change the world too. So I decided to learn more about the officers, Diplomats and Ambassadors. One thing led to another and now I m an Ambassador. It s an incredible thing and I m so thankful for 4-H. 8 NMSU Leaderline July / August / September 2018

9 Jeremiah Woodall State 4-H Ambassador Doña Ana County I have been a member of 4-H for nine years, and I have been around it for my whole life. When I was four, I gave my first demonstration, about my hat. Since then I kept on growing in 4-H, opening new doors, and finding new friends. My first year as a member, I was excited to see what 4-H could offer me. I took up a lot of projects, like Horse, Rifle and Leathercraft. I worked hard in them, and I was able to improve on my skills. As I got older and more experienced, I was able to pass my knowledge on to the newer generations. When I became a senior, I wanted to continue to learn and teach others, and I wanted to achieve this by being on the State 4-H Ambassador and Diplomat team. I love being on the team, and it has taught me a lot. I hope to continue to learn, grow, and teach in the 4-H program. 12 Partnerships (continued from page 1) youth-adult partnership: Do not view youth as an object to be dealt with. View youth as valuable resources who have ideas and assets that will positively contribute to the club. Do not expect more from youth than you would from an adult. Youth do not hold down full-time jobs to pay the mortgage but they do have other commitments, deadlines and pressures. Conversely, do not excuse all indiscretions just because you are dealing with a youth. Most youth perform to meet the expectations of caring adults. Treat youth as individuals; do not make one youth represent all youth. Youth are easily discouraged; be careful about interrupting their thoughts and ideas. Remember your role is a partner, not a parent. Give them time to accept and trust your partnership. Rushing through meetings and making decisions without explanation may harm your efforts to build a partnership. By working in a partnership capacity, youth learn responsibility, teamwork and become better communicators. Volunteers will develop a better understanding of the needs and concerns of our young people and learn to appreciate the ideas and energy youth bring to a club. Being a leader is not about you. It s about the people that are on your team and how you can help them be successful. ~Susan Vobejda RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED 12 NMSU Leaderline July / August / September 2018 STATE 4-H OFFICE, MSC 3AE NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY PO BOX LAS CRUCES NM
