The annual Swearing-In Ceremony and Awards Banquet are at the top of our priorities. Please take a look at the information for them on page 3. We will have a ton of prizes and awards to give out at the Awards Banquet so be sure to attend! The East Torrance Soil & Water District is offering to donate funds to our county 4-H account for help at their annual meeting. Our newly elected officers will be asked to help at the East Torrance Soil & Water Annual Meeting Saturday, November 10th. We will also need about 4 or 5 more volunteers to assist on this day as we are in need of a total of 12. If you are interested, please contact us at More information about this is also on page 3. As state 4-H events start to line-up, make sure you are enrolled before trying to register. You MUST be fully enrolled in 4-H to be eligible to attend any state events. This means, your 4honline account must say Active, meaning you have enrolled online and turned in your medical liability release form. As always, if you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact us here at the Extension Office.

2 Club Reports MUSTANG WRANGLERS Our October meeting was very fun! At roll call, everyone told what country they would like to visit. Then, when the meeting was adjourned, we made 4H slime. It was very sticky and very green, but everybody was laughing the whole time. Everyone had fun! PIONEERS The Pioneers 4-H Club had a great start to the new 4-H year and want to welcome our new members to our club. Everyone had an awesome time making scarecrows and decoupage pumpkins. Thank you Sofia, our song and recreation leader, for teaching everyone how to make slime, they all loved it! We started off the meeting by giving out attendance awards and the belt buckles to the kids who won the Rhode Island Red Chicken contest. The winners for the Chicken Contest were Autumn Sylskar for the 4-H age group and Lucia Creegan for the Cloverbud age group. Congratulations to you both, you did a terrific job raising your chickens. We had a lot of kids that won awards for Outstanding Attendance and I want to thank you all and your parents for always participating and supporting our club.

3 4-H and Local News Torrance County 4-H Council Next Meeting: November 19, :00pm Torrance County Courthouse Election of officers. If you are interested in representing Torrance County as a council officer, please make sure to attend. Attention: Newly elected council officers will be asked to help at the East Torrance Soil & Water Conservation Annual Meeting Saturday, November 10th. They must be at the East Torrance building at 4:15 pm to help set-up tables and chairs. They will be serving food and drinks during the meeting and then asked to move chairs after dinner for the dance. Once this is completed they are free to go. They are donating money to our council fund for our help so please keep this in mind! REGISTER for the new 4-H year! To enroll go to 4honline.com, log in or create an account, make sure each 4-H member has a profile, update your info, and submit enrollment. Once your online portion is done, turn in your liability release form to the county office. This form can be found at: Reenrollment Deadline: January 15th (members who were enrolled last year) Enrollment Deadline: April 1st (new members ONLY) 4-H Record Books DUE November 1, 2017 CES Office By 5:30pm Submit your record book for a chance to WIN some awesome prizes. Prizes too for the club with the most record book entries! If you need help completing your record book, or have any questions regarding it, please contact us at or us at torrance@nmsu.edu. 4-H Awards Banquet December 15th East Torrance Soil and Water Building Please mark down your end of the year 4-H Awards Banquet in your calendars! We will be giving away lots of awards and even some fun prizes! We would love to see EVERYONE attend. Swearing-In Ceremony Potentially: December 13th or 14th (We have to make sure which day works for the county officials but please reserve both dates.) Judicial Complex, Estancia The newly elected council officers will be swornin with the elected county officials. This is a Torrance County tradition and is a huge honor for our officers. 4 State 4-H News 2018 Guide for Livestock Exhibitors The requirements for showing Junior Livestock in New Mexico can be found on the New Mexico 4-H Website or the New Mexico Livestock Board website All inspections for the show season must be done by 2018 New Mexico 4-H Adult Volunteer Leaders Forum Saturday, November 10, 2018 Location: Grants, NM Who/What: Adult 4-H Leaders, 4-H Parents and Extension faculty/staff actively learning together through workshops, a community service project, special activities educational displays, a guest speaker, networking and more! Theme: 4-H: Exploring Our Past While Building Our Future State 4-H Leaderline A quarterly newsletter for 4-H volunteer leaders to provide you with the latest 4-H news in NM Senior Leadership Retreat 2019 is not far away and with that comes Senior Leadership Retreat! The event is going to take place at the Hyatt Regency in Albuquerque on January 18-20, The event is a three-day, two-night event filled with great workshops and amazing opportunities. During the weekend, youth will be involved in handson activities while learning about career opportunities, leadership skills, community service, and much more! There will also be time for them to cut a rug and show off their dancing skills! The 2018 Ambassadors and Diplomats are excited about putting on this event for all who attend! Registration Deadline: December 13th REMEMBER, you must be fully enrolled in 4-H to attend all state events. Community Service Scholarship Criteria Available to any Novice, Junior or Senior 4-H Member serving as a State 4-H Officer, Ambassador, Diplomat or participant in a 4-H activity Must submit a New Mexico 4-H Community Service Scholarship application form which is available on the website. 5 2019 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Competition: Call for Entries Submission Deadline: February 1, 2019 in the State 4-H Office Sponsored by: Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees 2019 Essay Topic: Honey Varietals, State to State Each jar of honey reflects an unrepeatable combination of climate, soil, weather and flowers. Each state has unique honey varietals that beekeepers can market to their customers. Please identify one unique varietal to your state and discuss the flower s uniqueness and how beekeepers can effectively market that varietal. In your essay, please include a photo of the varietal s flower, an interview with a local beekeeper who collects this varietal and a recipe that highlights the varietal. Put on Your Thinking Cap! An essential judging criterion is the scope of research you put forth in developing the ideas behind your essay accounting for 40% of your score. The number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources and the variety of the sources are all evaluated. Personal interviews with beekeepers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of information and should be documented. Note that honey bee is properly spelled as two words, even though many otherwise authoritative references spell it as one word. Eligibility: The 2019 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Competition is open to active 4-H Club members only. Any 4-H Club member who placed first, second or third in previous years of the national competition is NOT eligible to win in 2019, however, state competition winners remain eligible to enter the national competition. Entered essays must encompass the designated topic only. There will be NO exceptions. Competition Rules & Essay Requirements: Any 4-H Club member interested in writing an essay should contact their local 4-H office for competition details. The state selection process must be completed through the 4-H system. Failure to meet any one of the essay requirements will result in disqualification. Essay requirements for national judging: Essay must be typewritten or computer-generated on single-sided pages and formatted following standard manuscript format using double-spaced type and 12pt font in legible font face. Essay must encompass the designated topic in 750 to 1,000 words. All factual statements and interview references must be cited in a resources or bibliography list. Essays will be judged on (a) scope of research, 40%; (b) accuracy, 30%; (c) creativity, 10%; (d) conciseness, 10%; and (e) logical development of the topic, 10%. On a separate page, please include a brief biographical statement of the author including mailing address, address and telephone number. Each state may submit only ONE entry. Decisions made by the trustees of the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees during national judging are final. All national competition entries become the property of the foundation and may be used as it sees fit. No essays will be returned. Awards: Three cash prizes will be awarded in the 2019 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Competition. The author of the highest scoring essay will win first prize. The author of the second-highest scoring essay will win second prize. The author of the third-highest scoring essay will win third prize. First Prize: $750 Second Prize: $500 Third Prize: $250 The three prize-winning essays will be published in ABF Quarterly, the magazine of the American Beekeeping Federation. All authors of essays submitted to the national competition will receive a relevant book on honey bees, beekeeping or honey.
