1 EBEL Tentative Schedule: July 13 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Measuring July 14 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Measuring 1:00 PM Juni RABBLE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE NATIONAL REBEL CLASS ASSOCIATION March 1, 2003 Attention Juniors: Are you looking for a great sailing experience? Sail the Junior Nationals at Clark Lake this year. Five races, five times the fun! Do you need a boat? We can help. Do you need transportation to Clark Lake? Maybe we can help. Are your parents invited? Can you camp on site? YES! For more information contact Nick Tanis Cell phone: 517/ Home 952/ YES! CECE SMITH: creativemomsmith@aol.com Every year I swear I won't spend my vacation sailing again. Considering I say this annually, its surprising how much sailing I've managed to do each time the Nationals come around. I returned only to be bruised battered and have that great dent worn on my buttocks from hiking out, and yet at the end of the week I have a smile on my face and raise a glass to good friends present and past. Is this any way to spend a vacation? Come to Clark Lake this July and find out. You may also find muscles, places to bruise and friends you forgot you had. Nick Tanis, Rear Commodore (See Nationals 2003 registration form after page 7) 1 SALLY METZGER named DON MUSSELMAN AWARD RECIPIENT 2003 Sally Metzger was named the recipient of the DON MUSSELMAN MEMORIAL AWARD winner at the Spring meeting held in Grand Rapids, MI on March 1, Metzger, Past Commodore, volunteer extraordinaire was selected for her unheralded dedication to the National Rebel Class Association over her many years of membership. Among other services, she was seen year after year manning the Race Committee Boat at nationals, accepting hails as competitors rounded the stern of the Committee boat prior to the start of each race. We could count on her diligent score keeping, her scrupulous insistence on accuracy, and her hearty smile and enthusiasm. The Don Musselman Memorial Award: This award will go to a member who has made an outstanding contribution to the National Rebel Class Association over the years. This award can be presented to a former active member or a current member. The award itself, a glass sculpture designed by artist Byron Lonsway, was donated by Shirley Musselman in memory of Don Musselman to commemorate his great love of sailing, the Rebel, and the National Rebel Association. Don had been a sales manager for the Ray Greene Company, first builder of the Rebel, and served in the National Association in many official roles as well as the Perrysburg, OH. Boat Club.

3 COMMODORE S CORNER I recently met a kindred spirit in the rugby club. His wife (a New Zealander by birth) had encouraged him to try rugby, and although he was new to the sport he was quite enthusiastic and a ferocious tackler so he fit right in. As I grew to know him, I learned that his real passion was for sailing. It turns out he and his wife were looking at buying a boat and joining the Grand Rapids Yacht Club. I did my best to convince him that he needed a Rebel, but he had already been snapped up by the Snipe sailors at GRYC. He had been considering a used boat that was available at the club and although my arguments seemed persuasive enough to me, his vision was to join an international class and compete (and win) against what he perceived as a larger number of quality competition. I pointed out that the builder of some of the best Snipes and Lightnings available was also a Rebel sailor, but no amount of convincing could budge him from the belief that the boats he'd known as a boy were the best possible choice. When the next opportunity to talk about sailing came along, he told me he hadn't actually bought the boat he had been looking at. Why not?, I wondered. He thought that perhaps the boat wasn't as fast as its owner had represented. It might require too much in the way of new gear, preparation, or worse, it might already be overweight. He felt that buying a new(er) boat was the way to go, so he and his wife had put off the purchase to build up the necessary store of capital and to take time out for arthroscopic knee surgery during the summer (not caused, but aggravated by rugby). As I thought about that conversation, I couldn't help wondering to myself just what it is that drives sailors to buy a boat and race it. Why do people of diverse backgrounds who perhaps would not otherwise associate with each other doctors, lawyers, tradespeople, salesmen, musicians, educators, retirees - all brave bad weather, long car rides, summer heat change wheel bearings on the shoulder of the highway, and bear any number of other inconveniences to play a game which, like golf, is frustratingly simple to play, subject to the whim of Mother Nature, but requires significant skill to win, and requires an encyclopedic mind to know all the rules? Is it winning? We've all heard Dr. Stuart Walker's oft-quoted line about winning being the object of the game, but not the object of playing the game. The satisfaction of improving? Getting better each time out finally beating someone who has heretofore been almost untouchable? It's been said that there is nothing noble in being superior to somebody else. The only real nobility is in being superior to your former self. So what is it really that makes us re-arrange our schedules when a fellow sailor calls looking for a third boat to race on the weekend? What is it that makes us take young people we've never met, new girlfriends or wives, new members at the YC who may have never sailed or raced before, or just any stranger who volunteers, out on our boats, knowing that it may compromise our score that day or in the season series. What is it that makes experienced competitors so freely share their knowledge and give continual encouragement to those of us who are less skilled? Why do our long-suffering wives and families endure our absences or even follow willingly along on the interminable trips? There are probably as many reasons as there are sailors, but the best reason is probably the simplest one. We do it for each other. 4 A SPECIAL INVITATION: Please join us at the Clark Lake Yacht Club near Jackson Michigan for the 2003 Rebel Nationals. We have a beautiful beach area, plenty of dock space, a lift, and ample dry dock spaces. Located on 10 acres, most of which is wooded, there is room for campers. We also have a nice bath house with hot showers. Our club house was the summer home of industrialist C.B. Hayes. The CLYC was founded in The following, from the CLYC history, describes the beginning of the Rebels at Clark Lake: Royal Bengal Yacht Club was the name taken by the Clark Lake Yacht Club on its founding in 1931 in the basement of Pleasant View pavilion, later the Clark Lake Lodge. Following the war, there was little competitive sailing on Clark Lake. In 1950, Eldred (Bud) Kennedy and former members decided the Rebel, a boat built in Toledo out of glass fiber and plastic epoxy resin, would be the boat they would use to reinstate competitive sailing on Clark Lake. Six were purchased by the members in late 1949, and in 1950 the Clark Lake Yacht Club began racing again, this time from Eagle Point. The fleet grew rapidly with 10 to 12 boats in the next few years. 11 Sailing: Helping Further Your Pursuit By Tim Quirsfeld Why sailing? Ah, yes, I pondered this question many times as I walked apprehensively toward the beach house at Lake Arlington. It was the summer of 1998, and I was enrolled in the everpopular Lake Arlington Sailing Camp. Its two week duration only added to my dismay. Anyway, I was terrified of the water, and only wished to view sailboats from a safe distance. To this day, I continue to believe my father signed me up in order for me to overcome these phobias. As I was saying, I had no intent on learning how to sail. However, over the next three and a half years, something inside me seemed to click, the planets aligned, and I became immensely infatuated with the idea of sailing freedom. My first time out on the water was anything but enjoyable. As I clutched the side of the vessel and attempted to hold on for dear life, I began to wonder what I was really afraid of. Was it the rocking motion of the boat, the overwhelming responsibility of having to know the ropes, or perhaps the fear of capsizing? I had to make ends meet in order to escape this predicament, and potentially solve this mind-boggling puzzle. During the two-week camp, which highly resembled an educational institution, I learned more and more about sailboats. I became aware of what each line was capable of, how the wind caused the motion of the boat, and even how to rig the small Barnett that was often used. As I grew wiser with knowledge, I began to feel more confident on the water. In virtually every situation, I knew what lines to pull, where to sit for maximum aerodynamic potential, and even how to maneuver in case of a capsize. My fears were slowly slipping away, and I was gradually undergoing the transformation into a fine seaman. Once a primal fear, sailing, despite its incomprehensible complexity, had found its way into my heart. In spite of the time consumption, I continued my journey for extensive sailing knowledge and enrolled in the camp for the two succeeding years, only to learn more and more about this mentally fascinating, as well as challenging, activity. I started devoting more of my valued time to studying and researching sailing. The more I learned, the more I had the undeniable urge to get out on the water. It was about this time when my father purchased the highly under-credited Black Magic. Our enthusiasm towards sailing arose, especially due Tim Quirsfeld, Skipper (Freshman High school Nationals 8 to the fact that now, besides a long family inheritance of golfing finesse, my father and I had something else in common; the uncontrollable desire to be free, on the water, that is. Sailing had its way of bringing my whole family closer together, despite the fact that my sister is now going through the same stage of mental phobias that I once experienced. She will eventually find her way past them, but the fear of capsizing is hard to exorcise. We entered into the annual tradition of the Rebel Nationals, and have made many lifelong comrades inside the Des Plaines Yacht Club. Sailing, as you can see, not only gave me something to look forward to in the warmer months, but also positively impacted my physical, social, and mental health in life. In terms of developing interest among our younger generation, I have quite a bit of inspiring suggestions. First, to break the ice, enroll in an introductory sailing course. Here, you'll most likely learn the ropes, literally, and learn how to develop basic skills, as well as how to become more confident on the water. After the introductory course, in order to advance to the next mental level, I feel you must have the urge to expand your knowledge, and the desire to pursue sailing. Enroll yourself in more advanced sailing courses, and in the meantime, sail in your freetime, whether it be with your family, with friends, or just by yourself, the choice is entirely up to you. It is important to continue your pursuit, for just as fast as you learn everything about boats, you can just as quickly forget your previously acquired knowledge. This, in a way happened to me, but I regained my interest quickly, and found that I hadn't lost as much as I expected. In an instant, my strive to be free on the water continued, and I regained my passion for the activity. I say activity because the conflict between whether sailing is indeed a sport or a lifelong hobby remains open for discussion. In terms of youth competition, and getting past the mental block of deciding whether to crew or skipper, for the most part, you need a positive mental attitude. Tell yourself you re just going to have fun, and ignore everything else people may say to persuade you otherwise. It s not important how well you place in a competition, its mainly a measure of how well you can push yourself, and ultimately how well you can effectively maximize your personal enjoyment. Speaking from personal experience, I went through this rite of passage last year at the 2002 Lake Fenton Rebel Nationals. I hadn t planned on sailing at all, but fellow seamen encouraged me to give it a whirl, and despite placing rather poorly, I found that I enjoyed being in control of my existing sailing destiny. If you ask me, being in the lead of a race, no matter how brief it may be, comes with a great deal of pressure, but being

12 behind the lead only encourages you to sail as well as you can, and provides ample entertainment. So, if you re pondering whether to skipper, crew, or just go along for the ride in a future sailing event, I urge you to deeply consider it, because there s no substitute for the experience you ll gain if you decide to go through with it. To me, sailing is widely known and popular among our generation due to the fact that age fails to be a deciding factor. Experience decides everything. Whether you are 8 or 88, the competitiveness doesn t limit itself to the younger seamen. That s what is so exciting; the unpredictability. In other sports, for example, age limits and restricts ability. But in sailing, it s just you, your crew, your boat, and of course, the wind and water. In essence, you re free to do or perform however you wish. There is no real existing pressure; only the desire to do well, and above all, the act of enjoying yourself. I can honestly say I m not alone when I admit that sailing has far more welcoming components than any other activity that I ve ever had the pleasure of testing. So, concluding this informative, yet persuasive editorial, I say to you: May you sail to the best of your ability and to your heart s content, and may the wind be always at your back. 13 John VandenBrink Named Rotarian of the Year by Rotary Club of Park Ridge, IL Park Ridge resident, John VandenBrink, has recently been named Rotarian of the Year by the Rotary Club of Park Ridge. Vanden Brink, who is a retired medical marketing research professional, received the award at the Rotary Club's annual installation dinner. He was honored by the club for his tireless development of an innovative international project to establish reliable, low-cost, hightech WHIS-RAD (World Health Imaging System for Radiology) medical x-ray units in underdeveloped countries. His efforts on behalf of the -club included research, correspondence, multiple international phone calls and messages, attendance at numerous conferences, and meetings with medical community and Rotary International leaders. In presenting the award, Rotary Club President Ed Coyne said Vanden Brink was "a fine example of Rotary's motto to "Create Awareness-Take Action.' He has made our club, community the World health Organization and countless others aware of the effectiveness of a Rotary-run project. When asked about his reaction to the honor, Vanden Brink said he was "flattered the club recognized that WHIS-RAD was-an important project to support. Two thirds of the world do not have access to x-ray services. The Park Ridge Rotary Club is the first Rotary Club to fund and deliver a WHIS-RAD x-ray system based on World Health Organization standards and specifications for third world countries. This is quite significant." Although he first learned about the WHIS-RAD technology over 20 years ago, Vanden Brink began pursuing, the project in earnest through the Rotary in November Under his guidance, the Rotary Club of Park Ridge currently is raising funds to establish a pilot WHIS-RAD installation at the Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The Park Ridge Rotary. also launched a focused effort in Rotary International to install and maintain x-ray units in third world locations through donor and recipient Rotary club partnerships. Additional funds are being solicited for installations being evaluated in Ghana, Nigeria, the Republic of Georgia, India and the Americas. His commitment to the WHIS-RAD project is a perfect fit with Vanden Brink's past career experiences in which he concentrated on the medical diagnostic imaging markets. In 1977, he founded the high tech medical marketing research firm, Technology Marketing Group, which originally was located in Park Ridge and later moved to Des Plaines. Before that time, he was in charge of medical and industrial marketing research for Britt & Frerichs in Chicago, and from , served as chief executive office of Pelam, a laboratory and health services company in Hinsdale. He also worked for G.D. Searle as director of planning and venture development, and held various sales and marketing positions for Nuclear Chicago, a Des Plaines based company. Following his 1955 graduation from Iowa State University with a degree in industrial engineering, Vanden Brink s first positio was a bit of a departure from his later career focus. He originally served as an office in the Corps of Engineers special weapons division and was in charge of atomic demolitions. Vanden Brink joined the Park Ridge Rotary in 1994, and currently is a. member of -the organization's board of directors, heads up the club's world community division, and has worked on a variety of projects including the Rotary district conference and the Park Ridge club's anniversary dinner. His involvement in other organizations includes serving as chair of the committee on membership and marketing for the Society of Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR), and Commodore of the National Rebel Class Association. He has been a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church, Park Ridge, where he has served in both administrative and lay ministry functions over the years. Vanden Brink has been a resident of Park Ridge since 1967, where he lives with his wife, Ellie. They have three sons, two daughters and two granddaughters. Among his pastimes are snow skiing, playing the piano and sailing his 16-foot sailboat on Lake Park in Des Plaines. The Rotary Club of Park Ridge which is celebrating its 40 anniversary, is an affiliate of Rotary International, a service organization of more than 1.2 million men and women in 29,968 clubs in 163 countries around the world. 10

All approved. Commodore Scott Wright presented the Treasurer s report as prepared by Clarence Metzger and Wayne Rathbun. These are published in this Rebel Rabble. Points to note include: we have 7 less members than last year; no new Rebels have been ordered for 2003 as yet; our budget has been helped by contributions from members, a fleet contribution and a contribution from the builder. We can t count on these in Expenses due Clarence Metzger amount to $ Bill Blaine moved and Neil Robb seconded that these be paid to Clarence. All approved. Neil Robb moved, and Karel Vorel seconded to approve payment of $ to Wayne Rathbun for expenses incurred in updating our financial records. All approved. John Vanden Brink thanked Wayne for his significant contribution of time that he spent in changing our system from an older DOS format to a format compatible with today s programs, including Excel. A revised 2003 budget is published in this Rebel Rabble. An adjustment was made since the Association did not participate this year in the Sail Boat Show. Neil Robb moved, and John Hudak seconded, and all approved the budget as revised. John Vanden Brink moved and Bill Blaine seconded that we accept the Treasurer s Report as presented. All approved. Scott Wright, Karel Vorel and Wayne Rathbun will meet and prepare a budget for 2004 an the July meeting. Following this business the committees made the following reports: John Vanden Brink, Chair of the Membership Retention and Growth committee, will seek recommendations on the following: Approval to attend next year s Chicago Boat Show in a booth specifically geared to promoting the National Rebel Class Association. Booth costs can range from $200 to $525. John Vanden Brink will get the dates and pass on the information so every one can put the dates on their calendars. The committee will ask for approval to have 5000 brochures made up for distribution at the Show. These should last at least 3 years. 2. The committee reviewed and approved the continuation of our inclusion in the Harken advertising at a cost to the Association of $745 per year. 3. The committee asked for approval to allocate a couple of $50 scholarships to be used in the Chicago Park District Rainbow Sailing Program. This is mostly directed toward economically disadvantaged youth. Due to time constraints, Bill Blaine moved, and Karel Vorel seconded that we instruct the Treasurer to pay out these scholarships if we have appropriate application for their use. All approved. Administrative/Governance Chair Scott Wright reported the following: 1. As reported above, the 2004 budget will be presented in July. 2. The audit committee will consist of Al Vorel and Scott Wright. 3. Nominations are needed for the following positions: Rear Commodore, Secretary, Rebel Rabble Editor and various fleets as well as a member of the Class Measurement Committee. Several nominees are already in place and a full slate will be published, as required, in the June 1, 2003 Rebel Rabble. Bill Blaine was thanked for his many contributions to the success of the Rebel Rabble and his many years of service. 4. Detailed information on the Nationals to be held at Clark Lake can be found elsewhere in the Rebel Rabble. Note that Bob Gough will supply instructions for Senior Racing and Nick Tanis will provide racing instructions for Junior Racing. Trophies for the Nationals will come in under the budgeted $1000, thanks to Nick Tanis. A Nationals report was presented by Neil Robb. Bill Blaine moved and Steve Cummings seconded that we accept the report. All agreed. Several Junior boats are anticipated. Members are urged to invite young people to join us at Clark Lake for an opportunity to participate in the Junior Nationals Racing Competition. Old Business: None New Business: Bill Blaine moved, and John Vanden Brink seconded that we name Ben Hassell a Lifetime Honorary Member of the National Rebel Class Association. All agreed. The Commodore indicated he has heard the various suggestions of the Board of Directors and participants at the Spring Meeting and has chosen the recipient of the Don Musselman Award, which will be presented in July The meeting adjourned at 2:45 PM. Respectfully submitted. Joan Leeney, Secretary
