4250 Smothers Road, P.O. Box575 Editor: Rob Ciccotelli COMMODORE S COMMENTS by Matt Fisher Westerville, Ohio robertciccotelli@wowway.com The weather is getting perfect for sailing! Four of the last five weekends one could say have not been ideal, but the upcoming weekends & Wednesdays promise to be much better for sailing. We have some key events coming up over the next several weeks. OPEN HOUSE - May 28 th The Hoover Sailing Open House is May 28th from 1-4PM. We need volunteers. We especially need boats and skippers to take guest for sailboat rides. Please contact your fleet captain know if you can help. Last year we had 300 guests and it was a great success. This day feeds into future members and is an important day for the club. If you can lend your boat and/or you to skipper that would be great. Be ready to sail at 12:30 and we will have a quick meeting before we get started. Also after the event is done we will have an after party from 4:30-6:00. CHICKS ON STICKS - June 11 th On June 11th there will be a clinic for women to improve their sailing skills and have fun. All levels of sailors are invited. There will be on-land instruction at 11:00 and we want to launch boats and be ready to sail at noon. We will have plenty of instructors so try to attend this event. We will be done by 4 to be ready for the Island Party (see below). ISLAND PARTY - June 11 th Come to the club for the Island Party! Look in this Leadline for more information Be there by 5:30 this is a fun event and a great way to meet other club members. There is a lot going on at the club. Wednesday night sailing has started and weekend sailing is in full gear. If you are a new sailor and don t feel comfortable racing do one or two things: 1) Come out for Saturday cruising contact Jeff Tyndall jtyndall59@yahoo.com for more information and/or try the fifth start See Commodore on page 4 Inside BOG Reports 1-5 Amendment Update 4 Racing/JRT 6-7 Fleet News 8-9 Photos 10 SECRETARY S REPORT by Marty Sweterlitsch HOOVER SAILING CLUB MINUTES MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, 11 9, Commodore Fisher called the BOG meeting to order at 7:00 PM at HSC. The following BOG members and Committee Chairs attended, constituting a quorum: Commodore: Matt Fisher, Treasurer: Mark White, Secretary: Marty Sweterlitsch, Membership Secretary: Lisa Aspery, Vice Commodore/House Committee Chair: Dwight Robertson, Rear Commodore/Grounds Committee Chair: Jack Conrath, Safety Committee Chair: Chris Fogle, Social Committee Chair: Chris Burga, Sail Instruction Chair: Jamie Jones, Race Committee Chair: Tom Fee, Publicity Committee Chair: Kathy Bachman, Leadline Editor: Rob Ciccotelli, Past Commodore / Planning and Projects Chair Jeff See Minutes on page 2 Hoover Leadline May 2016 Page 1

Minutes continued from page 1 Tyndall, Member at Large/Docks Committee Chair: Peter Rothman, Junior Sailing Chair: Doug Squires. Committee Reports Secretary s Report. Marty Sweterlitsch reported. Peter Rothman moved to approve the minutes of March 2016 BOG Meeting. The motion was seconded by Rob Cicccotelli and passed. Treasurer s Report Mark White reported. Total revenue through March is $5,257 (6%) higher than last year with both Dues/Fees and Sail Instruction (SI) contributing to the positive variance. Forecasts for both Dues/Fees and SI will be reviewed in and revised as needed based on these recent trends. Major expenditures in March included the balance due on the new aluminum gangways, the annual event fees to the City of Columbus and the printing of this year s directory. Delays in the sale of the Carolina Skiff continues to create adverse variance in our results vs. plans but were partially offset by pushing back the purchase of an electric hoist. On a year to date basis, expenses are running $9,197 (23%) more than last year, driven by the purchase of the new gangways and earlier spending by SI. The available, unallocated surplus for new expenditures will be recalculated after planned forecast updates in. Membership Committee Report. Lisa Aspery reported. Also, see table on page 4. New members since last report: Scott and Emily Stephen (Active) Flying Scot, Christopher and Nancy Demler (Active) Windmill, Heidi Ruckel & Junior Sailor Wren Ruckel. Grounds Committee Report. Jack Conrath reported. The grounds committee showed up in almost full force on Saturday for Docks-in (others notified me that they couldn t be there because of previous scheduled activities such as knee surgery etc). Leaves, twigs and debris were picked up and disposed of. Fence posts were set, cables were run and fastened, logs were piled, trash cans were put out, gravel was raked up and shoveled, a large portion of the brush pile was removed, sheds were cleaned and reorganized, culverts were filled and other things done as needed. Several past committee chairs were there and took initiative on several projects. Thanks much to them and thanks to the grounds committee for their efforts. A good time was had by all. The tree that was struck by lightning was trimmed of dead wood so now let s hope that spring will bring leaves and life to it. Rather than pay to have the dead wood removed, it is laying on the ground under the tree and needs to be cut up. We need 2-3 folks with chain saws to cut and stack the wood (to be used later for fires. It looks like a couple hours of work. Anyone interested in taking this on, contact me and we ll make it happen. House Committee Report. Dwight Robertson reported. The House Committee completed their traditional tasks during docks-in; and the facility is now open for the season. Paper products, trash can liners, and cleaning products were replenished with enough inventory to take us through the end of May. One of the kitchen refrigerators failed and required unbudgeted replacement ($900). The septic tank system was serviced and should be good for another 24 months. Once the weather breaks, the exterior will be pressure washed to further welcome our members and guests. At the request of members Dwight has explored the possibility of installing computer and Docks Committee Report. Peter Rothman reported. TV screen in the clubhouse for communication purposes including posting photos, race results and educational Docks In took an extra day due to the high winds and the videos. He is also exploring the cost of installing and loss of anchors on the mooring dock. Volunteers came maintaining wi-fi service to the club. No decision has out on Sunday to finish the job but the wind caused been made. damage to a dock section on the ramp dock and a section Racing Committee Report. Tom Fee reported. An has to be removed. The Docks Committee is planning to additional flag launcher was installed on the committee build two new dock sections, one to replace the boat at docks in. There is also a number 5 flag for the JaM damaged section and one more to extend the length of start. The 4 new radios were delivered to Jim Ferguson the dock to accommodate Interlake Nationals. The for safe keeping. Jim will implement the new radios as extra section will be used to replace an older section needed. The first club race use of the Bingham box went next year. The Board discussed ways to engage and well. It was noted that we should still encourage race educate more members to work on dock installation and committee to come prepared with a timing device. At removal. docks in we found 4 mushroom anchors for the marks. I plan on purchasing 3 more for use this year. Page 2 HSC Leadline May

Safety Committee Report Chris Fogle reported. The dock spaces for the rescue boats were reconfigured and labeled as they are now specific for the boats they serve. Mooring lines were also changed on the small whaler to prevent damage to the bow while not in service. Many thanks to Mark White for repairs to the hull this past winter and the labeling of the dock spaces. The Big RIB will continue to be moored on the north side of the dock just inboard of the nearest mooring space (currently designated for the small whaler). Tight stern and bow lines will prevent the boat from contact with the dock and will allow for easy loading of marks etc. for race duty. Use of the RIB will be encouraged by all members and should be considered the primary response boat to capsizes and other emergency responses. It is our fastest and most boat friendly rescue unit. The throttle cable on the Rescue One is damaged which causes unintended acceleration when turning. This will be repaired the week of 4-11 and the boat should be back in service in time for race duty on Safety clinics will be offered to the membership along with Race Management on Wednesday 4-13 and Sail Instruction (SI) Report. Jamie Jones reported. Applications continue to flow in. St. Paul s school is undergoing renovation this summer, delaying the start of school by 2 weeks. Parents are concerned about child care arrangements for those extra two weeks. After discussing it with our college aged instructors, we re offering 2 weeks of St Paul Sailing Camp after our normal day camps end. Jamie already has 3 applications in hand, another 940 going out in school mail next week, and very positive word of mouth advertising. There are certainly some expenses associated with adding 2 weeks to the schedule, but the added income will more than cover that. The new SI 420s were rigged and are ready for sailing. High school sailing began last week with 10 sailors joining us for our first very light air practice. Numbers will be a bit lower this spring than anticipated, but Jamie expects to make up for it this fall. 4 new sailors signed up this year for the HS programs. Junior Race Team (JRT) Report. Doug Squires reported. We have officially hired Tara Foster has our head coach. There is a mandatory meeting for all those interested in participating in the JRT this season which will take place on Sunday May 1, 2016 at 6pm at the house. We hope to use most of the porch tables and seating or move inside if the weather is bad. We request the JRT fundraiser to held during the 20th clinic be publicized. The JRT is planning to run our world famous TACO BAR at the 20th Tactics and Rules seminar. Two tacos for $5 plus delicious sides will be available beginning at 6pm Wed 20th at the. Leadline Editor s Report. Rob Ciccotelli reported. He needs pictures and articles each month, including this one. Social Committee Report. Chris Burga had reported. Docks In went smoothly and Chris is evaluating changes in menu for Docks Out. Her committee is preparing for the season s events. Publicity Committee Report Kathy Bachman reported. Peter White redesigned and will produce new directional sign to clubhouse; replace old sign in parking lot to install before Open House and/or Interlake Nationals-July These are a test for UVC inks, materials, chalking, etc. for a larger roadside sign. Rachel Laskowski is designing poster of calendar of events for 2016 HSC Sailing Season to be installed on clubhouse exterior bulletin board. Fourth Fridays begin 22; 6:00 pm 9:00 pm. Ann Jones is the publicity volunteer for. Randy Piersall & Ann Jones are publicity volunteers for May. The Publicity Committee is planning the Open House May 28: 1pm 4 pm Planning and Projects (P&P) Committee Report. Jeff Tyndall reported. Because parking spaces in the dry sail lot seem to run low every year, P&P evaluated the overall dry sail lot to determine the best plan for adding spaces to our inventory. One consideration was to increase parking by adding additional spaces to the upper east lot along the road. This would involve the removal of several small trees, some light grading, gravel and tie down cable. Because this seemed costly and labor intensive, we went with Plan B. This involved the Grounds Committee installing a 75-foot cable tie down to the SW corner of the lower dry sail lot (next to the Sail See Minutes on page 4 Hoover Leadline May 2016 Page 3

Minutes continued from page 3 Instruction shed). With this plan, we were able to create 9 additional spaces at a cost of less than $100. These spaces are designated for temporary parking on regular sailing days and for visitors during regattas when SI boats are in the water. The new spots free up additional parking in the existing lower lot at the end of rows C and D. To summarize, after evaluation and discussion, P&P decided against creating additional spaces on the upper east lot but created spaces on the SW corner of the dry sail lot to meet the existing need 2.0 Old Business There was discussion of the status of the hoist. The Commodore will appoint a small committee to assess its conditions and determine if upgrades are needed, especially in light of the demand that will be on it for weighing boats for Interlake Nationals. 3.0 New Business Dwight Robertson proposed that the club purchase an AED unit for an amount not to exceed $1500. The motion was seconded by Marty Sweterlitsch and passed unanimously. The Board discussed a request that Life members be extended voting rights. There is wide support on the Board for this but it will require a Constitutional amendment. If the Board receives a formal proposal pursuant to the Constitution the Commodore may call a special membership meeting at the Memorial Day Potluck to consider the proposal. 4.0 Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made and seconded. The motion was approved and the meeting was adjourned. Membership Status as of 11, March Life/Honorary Active Ext Vis Young Adult Senior Jr Sailing Associate Crew Inactive Totals Commodore continued from page 1 a no-spinnaker, one lap, low key race. If you like to race, get going. Finally, we may invoke the rule that you cannot say I can t find crew. There are 4 very qualified names on the white board right now at the club. Also the first CREWHOOVER crew who signed up a week ago, WON the pursuit race on May 11th! See you at the club. Constitutional Amendment Update: Notice of Special Meeting A special meeting of the Hoover Sailing membership will be held at the 4 th of July Holiday Potluck, after racing Sunday, July 3, The topic of the meeting will be the proposed constitutional amendment regarding voting status of life members, which was published in the Leadline. 5 Publicity by Kathy Bachman Open House Saturday, May 28 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Our annual Open House is just a few days away! If the weather is anything like last year s, we should expect lots of visitors. We do need member-volunteers to help our guests with registration, assist visitors don lifejackets, ask about their sailing experience and direct guests to and from boats for rides. If you would like to volunteer and can participate, please contact Kathy Bachman at or kbachman7@gmail.com. There will be a meeting for volunteers at noon on Open House day to review procedures to help run the event smoothly. For skippers and crew volunteers, boats should be at the dock before 12:30 pm on Open House day. Jamie Jones will hold a Skippers Meeting on the patio at 12:30 pm for all skippers and crew. If you would like to volunteer your boat or skipper a boat, please contact your Fleet Captain. We are expecting more boats to participate this year to better accommodate our guests and provide breaks for our skippers and crew during the event. Everyone, please bring extra life jackets, especially the larger sizes, for guests to wear. And, don t forget, this year we will have an After Open House Party for membervolunteers following the event, so plan on staying for refreshments. 6 May Racing Update By Tom Fee, HSC Fleet Captain The first Pursuit Race of the season happened on Wednesday May 11th. Fourteen boats started the race and thirteen finished. The skies cleared in time for the race but the wind was light and variable, getting lighter as the race progressed. Trophy cups were awarded to the top 6 finishers; 1st Matt Fisher Interlake 2nd Steve Lavender Thistle 3rd Richard Blake MC Scow 4th Ann Jones Thistle 5th Graham Alexander 505 6th Doug Kiser MC Scow The next Pursuit Race is Wednesday June 1st. We have Four Pursuit Races again this year. racing bulletin board for a clarification on the start finish line. The intention is to make it clear that the Line will be closed while the Committee Boat is On Station. On Station is indicated by the blue flag being hoisted on the main mast on the boat. Keeping the line closed during start/finish makes it easier for both the committee and the competitors. A note to race committee; If possible it is advisable to set the finish line more windward than the placement of the start line. Also, when setting the finish line it can be shorter than the length of the start line. This will help keep the line from being too much of an obstacle for boats sailing down wind. A question came up regarding the number of races run on Sundays and how they should be scored. Our Racing Instructions state that we run 3 races on Sundays. Occasionally, conditions and timing allows additional races to be run. The question was how should a 4th, 5th, and so on should be scored? My interpretation is that the first 3 races should be scored by fleets and the additional races be considered informal. It is up to each fleet how this will be handled but if this comes up this is my opinion. Keep an eye out on the web site and the club Page 6 HSC Leadline May

Junior Sailing By Doug Squires The first 2016 JRT meeting was Sunday May 1 with almost 70 folks in attendance. Commodore Matt Fisher addressed the group of 16 returning sailors, 5 new members and 3 prospective members. The balance were parents who had most of their questions answered in the meeting and after while enjoying a beautiful sunset evening at Hoover. Jamie Jones explained the SI program and boat sharing and the high school sailing program. Other presenters included Kathy Trask on the Hoover junior regatta and Junior Bay Week. The JRT Manual is now online at the Junior Sailing page of the Hoover website. The JRT fundraiser at the 20th Rules and Tactics Clinic was a huge success. Sailors and parents sold tacos to the crowd and all had a great time. Thanks to all! Go to I-lya.org under under "junior sailing" for the Traveler Series calendar and plot your summer junior regatta schedule. Please see Kathy Trask and let coach Tara know if you are interested in representing Hoover at Junior Bay Week. See Doug Squires if you are interested in advanced Laser and C420 clinics at Hoover. 8 A HAIL FROM THE RAIL by Ann Jones SO THAT S WHAT THEY FOUND, and I STILL WANT MY TRAILER BACK! The March 16 Columbus Dispatch ran an article on page B9 titled Wreckage seems to fit Buckeye Lake canal boat sunk in That article described how a mucky mess of timbers, iron and coal 50 long, 8 wide and 3 high has been tentatively identified as the Black Diamond. That canal boat was transporting coal from Newark to Thornport when it collided with a stump, split into halves and sank off of what was later named Black Diamond Point. The recovered 6 to 8 planks (some of which are curved), as well as the hand-wrought iron hardware have now been submerged in containers where they will be stored for preservation purposes for unspecified lengths of time. This is similar to the method used to preserve recently-discovered huge, ancient Viking ships. So I guess a lesson we can learn here is that when we sail in certain areas like Buckeye Lake, Alum Creek, and our own Hoover Reservoir coves, WE NEED TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR STUMPS! That story about the Black Diamond also reminded me that, Gee, my poor little red Thistle trailer is still down at the bottom of our Reservoir! Some of you may even remember the story of how my husband accidentally launched that unfortunate trailer. For those who missed the incident, here s what happened. Back in 1981 when we were new to sailing and the areas behind our ears were wetter than our hull, Dick and I zealously got ready to launch the Thistle. Dick and our boys, Jamie and Jeff, headed for the launch while I zealously headed for the restroom. Can you imagine my surprise when I emerged to be greeted by both boys hollering, Mommy, Mommy Daddy launched the trailer! Frantically, I scanned the launch dock and saw that the Thistle was floating, sedately tied up to it. And then I glanced over, and there, to my horror stood Dick in his undershorts, up to his cute little thighs in water, valiantly heaving the anchor and line after the missing trailer! Apparently, it rolled all of the way down to the 60 stream bed, and it hasn t been seen since. Lots of people have looked for it whenever the Hoover water level goes down significantly. By now, it s probably a little mucky mess of crumbled rust and pulverized rubber sporting an illegible license tag. In the meantime, we may joke that if items are lost overboard, they are attached to the Jones trailer, but I still miss my cute little red trailer! It matched my cute little red boat stripe and I surely would like to have it back. In fact, we could probably preserve it and start a museum around it and even charge admission! But in the meantime, as it was pointed out to me when I received the Degree Award, the lesson we can learn here is that we need to FASTEN THE TRAILER CHAINS TO THE TOWING VEHICLE AND MAKE SURE THAT THE BALL IS FIRMLY SECURED TO THE HITCH! 9 INTERLAKE INTERLUDES By Jamie Jones Things are coming along nicely for Interlake Nationals at HSC in July. Many of the committee heads have been working very hard. Fleet members will likely be hearing from them soon. In the meantime, we re still looking for real numbers of our own fleet. As of today, only 13 of our fleet members have signed up on our don t pay me now pre-registration form that s currently on the ISCA website. You ll likely get a message from Tom Humphries, ISCA Secretary (if you re a class member), but please, go national-pre-registration/ and sign up. This will really help us in planning our numbers Hoover Leadline May 2016 Page 9
