4250 Smothers Road, P.O. Box575 Editor: Rob Ciccotelli COMMODORE S COMMENTS by Jeff Tyndall Westerville, Ohio robertciccotelli@wowway.com We ve had a full month at Hoover Sailing : 2 Wednesday night pursuit races with a total of 54 boats. Caley s Crossing has been straightened and is once again safe to trek. Junior Race Team performed very well. Summer sailing classes are underway. The new website for linking skippers with crew (check out crewhoover.com) is up and running, HSC s Cruising Division had its inaugural sail (see related article in this edition). More than 60 people turned out for a Saturday night Island Party. As with any volunteer organization, the 80/20 rule typically applies. You know, 80 percent of the work is being done by 20 percent of the members. Not true at HSC. It s not an understatement to say, We couldn t do it without you! Because we are so active, our task list grows and the need for help continues. Talk to your fleet captain or a committee chair and offer your help. We re happy to have it. What s next: Join us every Wednesday night for sailing followed by Blake burgers. Wednesday Night Pursuit Race on July 1. 4 th of July Holiday Series & Potluck July 3 and 5. The summer is just beginning take advantage of it! Inside BOG Reports 1-3 Racing 4 Committees 4-6 Fleet News 7-9, 14 SECRETARY S REPORT by Marty Sweterlitsch HOOVER SAILING CLUB MINUTES MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, May 11, Commodore Tyndall called the BOG meeting to order at 7:00 PM at HSC. The following BOG members and Committee Chairs attended, constituting a quorum: Commodore: Jeff Tyndall, Treasurer: Mark White, Secretary: Marty Sweterlitsch, Membership Secretary: Lisa Aspery, Rear Commodore/House Committee Chair: Dwight Robertson, Safety Committee Chair: Chris Fogle, Social Committee Chair: Sarah Lynn, Sail Instruction Chair: Jamie Jones, Race Committee Chair: Matt Fisher, Publicity Committee Chair: Kathy Bachman, Leadline Editor: Robert Ciccotelli, Past Commodore/Planning and Projects Chair: Peter Rothman See Minutes on page 2 Hoover Leadline June 2015 Page 1

Minutes continued from page 1 Member at Large/Docks Committee Chair: Steve Rendina, Vice Commodore/Grounds Committee Chair: Frank Walburg. Absent: Junior Sailing Chair: Doug Squires. 1.0 Committee Reports Secretary s Report. Marty Sweterlitsch reported. Frank Walburg moved to approve the minutes of April 2015 BOG Meeting. The motion was seconded by Steve Rendina and passed. Treasurer s Report Mark White reported. April results were extremely close to forecasts for both income and expense. The volume of checks for Sail Instruction (SI) classes is high. While revenue for SI was somewhat less than predicted at April month end we expect to catch up in May. Much depends on the timing of deposits. Dues/Fees income continues to be strong, driven by new membership and additional availability of rack space. Expenses were precisely as predicted with two large but offsetting timing issues. April expenses included normal spring spending to prepare the House, Grounds, and RC Boats for the season. With the RIB purchase expenses hitting in May, and the sale of the Carolina Skiff assumed in July, the annual forecast for the club now projects break even for the year, assuming no new discretionary spending. This includes approximately $2000 in additional costs associates with sales tax, transportation costs and other expenses to acquire the RIB. This prediction is updated monthly. Membership Committee Report. Lisa Aspery reported. See table on page 4. Docks Committee Report. Steve Rendina reported. At the moment, all is quiet with the docks committee. John Church and Mark Andrew are planning to start constructing a replacement for the one broken Ramp dock soon. Water is still high as of this report. The committee must develop a plan for replacing the Windmill and Interlake Cove stairs. Additionally, the demand for mooring slips has increased. Grounds Committee Report. reported. Frank Walburg Grounds committee continues weed and trash control. Fallen tree removed from upper east lot and added to wood pile along with some driftwood. Twenty three of our thirty canoe/kayak rack spaces are occupied. Seven remain open. One hundred forty eight of one hundred sixty five drysail spaces are filled. Seventeen remain open. The East Dry Sail Lot is full. All winter storage boats are off the grass. The main gate was raised and the east anchor pole was adjusted. House Committee Report. reported. Dwight Robertson Racing Committee Report. Matt Fisher reported. The club hosted 4 clinics in the last month. Two were Race Committee/Safety clinics conducted by Jamie Jones and Chris Fogle. Over 75 people attended these two seminars. On April 29th, Skip Dieball and Jamie Jones conducted a Rules and Tactics clinic that was well attended and had an open exchange with the audience and the presenters. On May 6th there was a "tarps off event with almost 30 masts being stepped and many people being served Blake Burgers after the sailing. Nick Turney from Quantum Sails came down from Cleveland and conducted an on the water seminar. There was very little wind but the time was enjoyed by those who participated. New glasses have been purchased for the trophies at club holiday events. Safety Committee Report Chris Fogle reported. Two Safety Seminars were held at the club during April in conjunction with Matt Fisher s rules and tactics workshops. Attendance was great and my part of the program focused on safety boat equipment, boat operation and handling, and basic rescue protocols. A fire extinguisher was replaced in the small whaler. I m excited to transition the new RIB that will be delivered on May 17 th into our support boat line-up and will work with Jamie and docks to prepare an appropriate storage space for it. Once received, the Carolina Skiff will be removed from the water for bow repairs, graciously provided by Mark White Boat Works, in Westerville. The boat will be listed for sale shortly after repairs are complete Sail Instruction (SI) Report. Jamie Jones reported. The numbers are remarkably similar to the past couple of seasons. Enrollment continues to match last year s record pace, while income is within a few hundred Here s the details: See Minutes on page 3 Page 2 HSC Leadline June

Minutes continued from page 2 As of May 1, we have 103 people signed up for 128 class segments. 48 are repeats from previous seasons, while 13 members are taking advantage of the discount. Total income (including $6k that came in after the April books closed) runs $23,961. Last year, we took in roughly $38k in after May 1. Adding in Columbus Academy, that totals around $67k for the summer. We have 36 kids signed up for the Columbus Academy camps (which is more than last year s total already) and a Watershed Ranger class set for June 18. No other outside groups are signed up to sail with us so far this summer. The Level 1 course is set for the end of the month. Instructors are all set with contracts outlining pay rates, budgeted hours for the summer and expected duties. Instructor Orientation/work day is set for Friday May 22 from We ll spend the day getting the final touches set for the program for the summer. Jamie will work with Chris and Mark to transition the Carolina out of commission and the RIB in. A operator certification program should be implemented to use that boat. College Sailing: The college fleet has been transferred to the club ready for LTS. None of our teams sailed in any of the Championship events this spring, and the season ended with the Miami Team Race event at the end of April. Alec Chicoine is on the Old Dominion team that qualified for Dinghy Nationals at Brown in June. Junior Race Team (JRT) Report. Doug Squires reported. Our first JRT meeting was April 19 and attendance was very good. Much thanks to the Commodore for attending and addressing our junior sailors, parents and interested parties. Our I-LYA Traveler Series junior regattas start soon. There is much enthusiasm on the JRT this year and we expect to have a Thistle, two 420s, six Lasers and about a dozen Optis on the water for regattas. Our fist big water events are at Edgewater YC June 17 and at North Cape YC June 20. Leadline Editor s Report. Rob Ciccotelli reported. He needs pictures and articles each month, including this one. Social Committee Report. Sarah Lynn reported. Committee I preparing for the Open House. The Island Party is scheduled for June 13 Publicity Committee Report Kathy Bachman reported. The Fleet poster and Calendar of Events is posted on exterior bulletin board and the Open House Banner installed at Smothers Road. The next Fourth Fridays event is May 22; 6:00 pm 9:00 pm Open House is scheduled for May 23 ; 1pm 4 pm. Flyers & posters have been distributed. Newspaper ads were submitted to Westerville, Worthington, New Albany, Olentangy and Gahanna newspapers.. WeekEnder announcement was submitted for May 21 publication and press releases for Open House were sent to local media outlets. The committee posted Open House information on Columbus Alive, Discover Ohio, Westerville Visitors and Convention, Westerville 365 online calendars. The board discussed inclusion of liability waiver on Open House sign in forms. Planning and Projects (P&P) Committee Report. No report was provided. 2.0 Old Business There was discussion of plans for bridge repair or replacement and its continued use. Jamie made a High School Sailing report. 15 kids from 9 schools signed up for our High School Sailing Program. Those practices begin Tuesday June New Business Jeff Jones presented the proposal to hold the 24 hour endurance race at HSC over Labor Day weekend. No objections were raised. However there was discussion of changes that could be implemented for future years. 4.0 Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made by Frank Walburg and seconded by Steve Rendina. The motion was approved and the meeting was adjourned. Hoover Leadline June 2015 Page 3

With 23 members and great coaching, the Junior Racing Team is off to a flying start. Our first regatta was at Alum Creek, hosted by Buckey Lake YC. With the help of Watercraft officers patrolling the courses, it was a safe and fun event. Head Coach Tara Foster completed her US Sailing Level 3 certification this past week. Assistant Coach Margot Sherman-Jollis has been doing a great job with fleet development of new Opti sailors. Our Hoover regatta was attended by almost 90 junior sailors with about 20 boats in each class. The breeze was up when Jim Cottle ran the 420/Laser course with Steve Lavender handling the Opti course. Steve introduced balloon racing to the Opti Green Fleet where they drag a balloon behind their boats and use boathandling skills to pop each ballon and this was a big hit. Chairpersons Kathy and Ray Trask and Julie and Louis Chicoine made sure the duties were assigned and everything ran smoothly. Thanks to Ed Yingling for arranging for a pontoon boat to serve as the Opti RC boat, which worked out wonderfully. Kathy scored electronically which ensured awards were right after sailing. And what awards they were! Handy drybags with custom keychains featuring junior sailboat classes by Becky Harris made sure winners came away with some nice useful swag. All classes of boats were well represented by Hoover and all finished very well. The now famous Hoover Taco Bar was in full operation and pleased the masses. Speaking of the Taco Bar, Richard Blake will be away Wednesday June 24, so we the Junior Sailing Taco Bar will be in place. Delicious tacos are 3 for $5 and all proceeds benefits Junior Sailing. More Regatta News I am happy to report the JRT had 2 Optis and 2 Lasers on the podium at the I-LYA Traveler Series #3 at Berlin Lake this past Saturday. The Team was at Edgewater YC Wednesday, 6/17 for TS #4 and at North Cape YC Saturday, 6/20 for TS #5. Look for results in the next Leadline. Hoover Leadline June 2015 Page 5

PUBLICITY by Kathy Bachman Open House- Record Event We had a record turnout of 295 registered guests, and a record number of boats on the water. Fourteen sailboats including an Opti! But more importantly, we had over 50 HSC members who volunteered their time and skills. Thanks to ALL who helped make this year s Open House a success! From the Publicity Committee, thanks to Hallie Bourne for preparing our new sign-in form with waiver and for compiling the data for visitor participation. Doug Kiser for setting up/taking down signs and banners. Stokes McIntyre for providing his photographer, Patrick Zimmer, to document activities. Ann Jones and Zack Kenitzer for helping to fit guests with lifevests. Lisa Kreischer performed her duties as gatekeeper graciously again this year! Mark Presley, Peter White and Doug Kiser helping on the docks getting people safely in and out of boats. Mandy Miller spearheaded our merchandise sales. There are many other people to thank for their help at this year s Open House. First, thanks to all the fleet skippers who provided sailboats for rides, and members who donated extra lifevests for the day. Many thanks to our HSC member volunteers Evelyn Ferguson, Ellery Block (it isn t Open House without him!), Jeff Jones, Lisa Aspery, Rob Ciccotelli, Jackie LaMuth, Leo Hoar and Lynn Allison who helped guests to sign-in, don lifevests, guide to the docks and safely assisted visitors on and off boats. And, thanks to Jeff Clark for taking our photographer, Patrick, out on the water. Kudos to Sarah Lynn and the Social Committee volunteers for food service throughout our busy event. Throughout the Open House, Jamie Jones informed guests about HSC s Learn to Sail programs and enrolled twelve new students for Sail Instruction! Did he have something to do with the spectacular weather? HSC Commodore, Jeff Tyndall, smoothly navigated through our busy event. And thanks to Doug Squires, chairperson for our Junior Race Team, and his junior sailors for demonstrating their sailing skills to the public. Fourth Fridays Friday, June 26th Safety Fest Visit our booth at Uptown Westerville s Safety Fest slated for Friday June 26 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Since the theme for this event is Safety, we will display items that sailors routinely use to be safe on water life vests, protective foot/hand gear as well as water safety information from the ODNR Watercraft Division. Make plans to attend Uptown Westerville and visit Hoover Sailing s booth! HSC Branded Merchandise We ll be selling our HSCbranded items during the Independence Day Holiday Series Races on July 3rd and 5th. If you are interested in buying items before then or want to sell them at your Fleet Regatta, contact me at or kbachman7@gmail.com. 7 A HAIL FROM THE RAIL by Ann Jones WELCOME TO LEO HOAR & MOLLY HARSH, who recently joined Fleet #126. Leo and Molly have lots of sailing experience and recently acquired Thistle #3377. They live at 1120 Carousel Court, Westerville, OH You can reach them at , or SANDUSKY OPEN RESULTS - With 10 boats competing, Bob France reported that the top 3 finishes were: 1. Karl Bradley from Detroit; 2. Kyle Finefrock, and 3. Ben France. Bob only sailed the first day, but he won the second race. Stu Fisher (with parents Matt & Lisa crewing) reported that he came in 4th over all. Unfortunately, a search of the web did not produce any additional results, but you can bet that since it was a Thistle regatta a great time was had by all!. JUNE & JULY REGATTAS - Berlin, June 20 & 21, Lake Erie Districts, North Cape, June 27 & 28, Great Lakes Regionals, Edgewater, July 11 & 12, Atlantic Coast Championships, Annapolis MD, July 11 & 12, Thistle Women's & Junior Championships, Ft. Walton FL, July Thistle National Championship, Ft. Walton, FL, July 25=31. RACE COMMITTEE REMINDER - We have Race Committee duty on June 24, July 5, July 15, July 29, August 2, August 30 and September 27. Please check your calendar, make any necessary trades and keep Steve Lavender informed. It is very important that we show up on time and do a good job, as we expect others to do the same for us. "BAGPIPE" HIGHLIGHTS - Brett Freeman made the cover of the June/July Edition that covered Midwinters East. That's his boat #3688 on the cover, far left. Brett and crew members (wife) Kate and John Church won B-Fleet, see p. 25. Also, Ben France did a great write-up of Race 8 on p. 23. And is that our favorite Fleet Captain, Louis Chicoine, hoisting a tall one on p.19? Be sure to check out p. 12 for a very good article on "Hydration"--this is the time of year that we need to practice that particular form of tippling. The gist of the article is "P=C (squared)", or "Yer Pee should always be Clear and Copious". When Louis and his daughter, Jaimie, sailed with me at North Cape Nationals a few years ago, the temp was in the mid 90's almost the entire week, and we rounded the course chanting, "Tack and hydrate...tack and hydrate". We managed to gulp down copious quantities of water and complete the races without completely wilting, which was more than some teams managed to do. Last but not least, Skip Dieball announced, on page 6, that he has joined the North Sails Group. You can contact him at skip.dieball@northsails.com OUR FIRST ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION took place last Sunday, June 7. The wind was from the southwest, and the consensus was that it usually paid off to go west ASAP after the start and on subsequent beats because the wind veered right (west) in the puffs. RESERVOIR WATCH - Many of us were surprised when there were separate Laser starts during last Wednesday's races. Later, I was talking with a Laser sailor from Buckeye Lake, and she said that four Lasers from her Yacht have been practicing at Hoover. Those four racers have joined HSC as Junior Sailing Members and pay for summer dry sail spots. I'm so glad that we're able to help the Buckeye Lake juniors since their water level is down. "The Columbus Dispatch" 6/13/15 edition described how a declaration of economic disaster by the SBA could allow for low interest loans to help some business owners survive the next few lean years. In another article on that same day, the "Dispatch" told how Ohio and Michigan have agreed to sharply reduce phosphorus runoff that may cause harmful algae blooms and create oxygen-deprived dead zones where fish can't survive. Of course, these problems affect all of us who race on Lake Erie. Many areas around greater Cleveland have already been posted as hazardous for e-coli, so try not to capsize there. On the other hand, Hoover is only down a foot and it's pretty warm, SO COME ON OUT AND CAPSIZE WITH US! Hoover Leadline June 2015 Page 7

MILLING AROUND by Kathy Bachman Craig & Cindy Tovell 2015 Midwestern Champions May brought a 16-boat fleet with 5 states other than Ohio (9 of the entries being from the host Hoover Sailing ) represented on the starting line and wonderful sailing conditions for this longest-standing Windmill regatta held at the same club Hoover Sailing. Sailing with his wife Cindy, Craig Tovell (4200) started off and then consolidated with steady finishes (taking a DNS in the last race) to win by 6 points over Lon Ethington/ Meg Gimmi of Florida (5070). Saturday brought 8-12 mph winds for the 11 AM start and the committee, headed by HSC Flying Scot sailor Ross Long, set a Triangle, WLW course for the first race. The class greatly appreciates the fine work by Ross and the Flying Scot fleet in running an outstanding event. The Tovells jumped in front at the start and steadily opened his lead the only race in which he was never seriously challenged. Pat & Janet Huntley continued their good sailing in 5703, a new Johansen hull in sailing, like its owners, in the initial year of competition and took second with good speed and alertly detecting shifts to finish ahead of Lon & Meg (5070) who were followed by Nate & Tim Bachman (4689) who showed great windward performance until their mainsheet fitting pulled out from the aft end of the DB well but held on for 4 th ahead of Chris & Nancy Demler sailing their Johansen 5705 (with 5045 sails)---first time in the water for the newest boat in the class! The race committee was very efficient at getting races off in a timely fashion and mixed the Triangle WLW course with 2 laps around a triangle (one race was only one lap). The second race saw the Demlers pushing Tovell at all times, though they had to settle for second behind Craig & Cindy. Lon & Meg were 3 rd again, staying ahead of Allen Chauvenet & Erik Arnesen (5586) while the Huntleys beat the Bachmans for the 5 th position. The final race before lunch found the fleet bunched very tightly around the course but the Tovells and Demlers repeated 1-2 while Chauvenet/Arnesen moved up to 3 rd just ahead of the Huntleys with Lon & Meg dropping back to 5 th. In this race, Bernie & Julie Himmelsbach found wind and a great shift to the right (west) and rounded the weather mark first. Allen & Erik were boxed in at the start, actually luffed to allow a boat to weather to pass them, tacked port for clear air and did so well following the HImmelsbachs that they rounded second. Moral is if your start is not good, find a way to get a lane of clear air and get your boat moving to get back in the race! HSC served outstanding lunch and even arranged for a thunderstorm/rain to take place during lunch, enabling the fleet to return to the course for 3 more afternoon races! In this race, Allen & Erik made an excellent start, moved the boat well at all times, and stayed just out of congestion and bad air from other boats. In other words, they did everything necessary to win, even beating the Tovells for the first time in the regatta. Their problem was that the Demlers just continued to sail better and better and won the race by a couple of boat lengths! At this point the thought was that the Demlers would be mistaken for the Bixbys if they continued this type of improvement! Ralph & Matt Sponar (5060) shook off pre-lunch results with a 4 th with Lon & Meg again 5 th. The 5 th race found the Demlers repeating their win with a superbly sailed race. Lon & Meg sailed very well, especially on the second weather leg and run to the leeward mark to beat the Tovells for the runner up spot followed by the Sponars who kept control of Allen & Erik on the beat to the finish as those rounded out the top 5. At this point, the Demlers were essentially tied with the Tovells after their streak post the first race, in spite of the opening by the Tovells. The sixth and final race on Saturday restored the Tovells regatta lead. Although Lon & Meg sailed one of those perfect races we all hope for great start, early lead Page 8 HSC Leadline June

with clear wind, never to wrong side of the course and a decisive lead running down to the last mark the Tovells bounced back from their two 3rds with a runner up result, holding off Allen & Erik who placed 3 rd. The Bachmans, in spite of having to lead the mainsheet directly off the boom to the hand of the skipper (which they were not used to doing) sorted things out and bounced back into 4 th, leaving the Demlers in 5 th and restoring control of the regatta to the Tovells. Just after the boats got in, thunderstorm #2 hit, again scheduled with no one sailing. Boats were secured and snacks were followed by the always fantastic HSC dinner along with beer, wine and deserts. During dinner, an even stronger thunderstorm occurred which included a lightning strike on a tree near the clubhouse (peeling off bark, but leaving the tree otherwise intact). That storm cleared and we then enjoyed the usual beautiful sunset as the evening wound down. The outstanding Hoover dinner was provided by Fleet 60 members (and supporters) including Carol & Ed Prebihalo, Kathy Bachman, Dixie & Mike Mickelson, Evelyn Ferguson, Julie Himmelsbach, Ed Yingling and Chris Bunge. Sunday brought similar conditions with cloudy skies. The race committee decided to run two races, both Triangle WLW. The first race found the top boats engaged in a very close struggle but the Huntley team emerged on top at the second weather mark with Chauvenet/Arnesen and the Sponars providing the closest pursuit. They turned in that order at the leeward mark and Chauvenet gradually worked to weather of Huntley while the latter moved a bit ahead. Sponar tacked to starboard and came back to port aiming to just fetch the committee boat. Huntley tacked to starboard right on the layline so Chauvenet followed as an earlier tack might lose Sponar. In a very close finish, Huntley had a boat length of open water on Chauvenet while Sponar was faced with two starboard tack boats which allowed Chauvenet to shoot the line and hold second. In the battle for the regatta title, Tovell sailed carefully and well to take 4 th which clinched the series when the Demlers wound up with their throwout, a 7 th. Tovell then sailed in and used the last race as a throwout. With Ethington 6 th behind Bachman, the battle for 2-5 overall was unsettled. jib mark having the top six boats bunched within 3 boat lengths. The Sponars took a small lead at the leeward mark with the 5 other leaders all close behind. The second beat featured several shifts and the Huntleys played them perfectly (along with excellent boat speed) to lead at the weather mark. Lon & Meg were second, followed by the Sponars, and this order was retained to the leeward mark and finish. Chauvenet & Arnesen were 4 th but the Bachmans established an inside overlap at the leeward mark. Knowing the need to beat the Demlers to save regatta 4 th, Chauvenet covered them on the short final beat. This order incidentally not only saved 4 th for Chauvenet but moved Lon & Meg into 2 nd place overall, just a point ahead of the Demlers who took series third. In spite of two outstanding wins on Sunday, the Huntleys fell a point short and settled for the 5 th place trophies. Although the scores show that the top 7 boats dominated, there was much close racing among the rest of the fleet and numerous boats were in the mix on the first lap or not far behind. Virtually everyone is improving which only makes for rewarding, and exciting racing! After all scoring and marking of slats was done by Randy Piersall (ably assisted by his daughter Juliann), each entry received a personal slat with race places and a goodie bag from Fleet 60. The top 5 also received skipper and crew trophies designed and made by Tim Bachman. Special recognition should go to the youngest skipper, Hoover s Grace Yingling, who completed all races and continues to move up with steadily improving results. This event continues to be one of the outstanding regattas & greatest social gatherings in the class and we look forward to 2016 with the hope & expectation that even more sailors will be participating! Lon & Meg made a great start in the last race right at the committee boat, and led the fleet toward the first mark. Unfortunately, they hit the mark while rounding with the resulting leg to the Hoover Leadline June 2015 Page 9

INTERLAKE INTERLUDES By Bill Kotys (with an assist from Jamie Jones) On Saturday, members of the Interlake Fleet bundled up and made their way to Uptown Westerville to take a tour of the Anti-Saloon League museum housed at the Westerville Library. Mike McClinchie and Bill Smith were awarded fifth place The race is described by Scott: On the first day we sailed three races under tough conditions. Winds were out of the northeast with sustained winds around mph, and gusts into the mid 20s. It was a lot of work, but it was epic! He said, It felt great to get back on shore and ust sit down. The second day saw calmer winds which were welcomed by the entire fleet. If you need crew, utilize the new crewhoover.com website to start looking for someone. Page 10 HSC Leadline June

SCOW SCOOP By Steve Callison Wow, what a great start to the season sailing and turnout has been awesome keep it up! As of June 10th we have had 19 races and been averaging 8 boats per race. Additionally, the new format of having pursuit races on Wednesday nites has worked well turnout has been awesome. During the recent one, it was fun to see Richard win followed Jeff Clark our own Vaudvillities star. Fleet racing has been intense with Richard Blake showing the value of getting out on the course. Richard is leading the fleet having sailed 70% of the races and having a commanding lead in the points. Additionally, Richard won the prestigious Scowabunga at Privateer YC in Tennessee. In fleet racing, following Richard we have Mark White, Clark Wade, Jay Huling, and Matt Newman. Nationals are right around the corner and will be hosted at the lovely Pewaukee YC a true hot bed of scow sailing, Best of luck to all the fleet members attending nationals. Thanks Bob Caley for his expertise and guidance in the repair of Caley s Crossing, the walking bridge he was instrumental in creating years ago. The weather events over the winter caused this much-used club fixture to develop a creative curve (March 2015, right). Thanks to the expertise of Bob, the bridge is again straight (June, 2015, left). 12 NEW CRUISNG DIVISION HSC s New Cruising Division Has Inaugural Sail Hoover Sailing s new Cruising Division was established this month in an effort to give those I-don tcare-for-racing folks some time on the water. Under the guidance of our Cruise Director and new member Chris Burga, 5 boats went out on the reservoir on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The inaugural sail took place with representation from the Flying Scot, Interlake, MCScow and O Day fleets. The next planned event for the cruisers will be Saturday, July 4. Skippers and crew will gather around 1:30 p.m. with the goal of being on the water by 2 p.m. If you are interested in participating, Jeff Tyndall at jtyndall59@yahoo.com. Page 12 HSC Leadline June

SCOT SPOT By Arnie Ishizuka A special welcome to Eric and Cathy Ottinger who are new members to the Flying Scot fleet. They purchased Steve Tamburello s Flying Scot # which was built in They shared the following: We always wanted to learn to sail. We thought it would be a retirement thing, but decided now was a better time to learn. Why wait until retirement? We went to the open house and took beginner and intermediate sailing lessons at HSC last year. This put us in the mood to buy a Flying Scot over the winter months. With one to Jamie Jones, we had a Flying Scot to call our own.
