Inside BOG Reports 1-4 Racing/Cruising 5 Junior Sailing 6 Fleet News 7-9, SECRETARY S REPORT by Marty Sweterlitsch HOOVER SAILING CLUB MINUTES MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS, 8, Commodore Tyndall called the BOG meeting to order at 7:00 PM at HSC. The following BOG members and Committee Chairs attended, constituting a quorum: Commodore: Jeff Tyndall, Treasurer: Mark White, Membership Secretary: Lisa Aspery, Rear Commodore/House Committee Chair: Dwight Robertson, Safety Committee Chair: Chris Fogle, Social Committee Chair: Sarah Lynn, Sail Instruction Chair: Jamie Jones, Race Committee Chair: Matt Fisher, Publicity Committee Chair: Kathy Bachman, Leadline Editor: Robert Ciccotelli, Past Commodore/Planning and Projects Chair: Peter Rothman See Minutes on page 2 Hoover Leadline July 2015 Page 1

2 Minutes continued from page 1 Member at Large/Docks Committee Chair: Steve Rendina, Vice Commodore/Grounds Committee Chair: Frank Walburg, Junior Sailing Chair: Doug Squires. Absent: Secretary: Marty Sweterlitsch. Committee Reports Secretary s Report. Marty Sweterlitsch reported. Steve Rendina moved to approve the minutes of the May 2015 BOG Meeting. The motion was seconded by Dwight Robertson and passed. Treasurer s Report Mark White reported. Both revenue and expenses were very close to forecasts in May. Dues/Fees income continued to trend positively, slightly ahead of 2014 and on track with the 2015 budget. SI income was also strong. Overall, YTD total revenue is almost precisely the same as last year at this time. May is normally the highest expense month of the year, with the 1st installment of the lease fees to the city, Open House and New Member s reception costs, mowing, SI season preparations and the new RIB purchase pushing our expenditures to $32k. While current forecasts which assume routine new dock construction in the fall and normal rental property maintenance/upgrades predict a $4k surplus at year end, unknown bridge and metal stair repair costs and any new discretionary spending will impact that projection. Yearend surplus/deficient forecasts are updated each month. Peter moved to accept the treasurer s report, Frank seconded. Membership Committee Report. Lisa Aspery reported. See table on page 4. New members since last report: Active Robert and Annie Stephens Interlake, Active Leo Hoar and Molly Harsh Thistle, Jr Sailing Brick, GrandPierre, Myers, Reynolds/Griffeth, Schroeder families. Other changes in counts: The Headlee family changed from inactive to Jr Sailing. New Members in Process: Jr Sailing Schantz and Smith families. Votes needed: EV - William Crawford application Lisa moved to accept William s application for EV membership, Steve seconded, motion passed. Associate Aaron Gagnon application. Lisa moved to accept Aaron s application for Associate membership, Steve seconded, motion passed. Docks Committee Report. Steve Rendina reported. No action taken on replacing the #2 Ramp Dock section. Several boards on other Ramp docks have been marked for removal and replacement. Goose string has been strung. Thanks Peter! RIB A-frame modifications need to be decided. No action taken on Windmill or Interlake steps. Grounds Committee Report. Frank Walburg reported. In preparation for Open House, cement parking blocks in the upper parking lot were repositioned and secured with rebar. The front fence was repaired and straightened. Grounds crew continues trash pickup and weed control. The canoe/kayak racks were inventoried and will be matched to those who have paid for slots. Joyce Lohner volunteered to affix identifying letters and numbers to the canoe/kayak racks to aid in assigning spots. Grounds worked on the foot bridge with the Bridge Committee. A long overdue tree trimming was accomplished working with Jim Ferguson and John Church. Five trailer loads of branches were moved to the southwest corner ultimately to be chipped. Inventory of drysail shows that the East Lot is full with MC Scows and Thistles. In the West Lot A and B rows are all assigned. There remain 13 unassigned spaces in C,D,E rows. Currently 5 SI/JRT boats, the new RIB and one boat repairing his raft occupy 7 of those spaces leaving 6 unoccupied drysail spaces. Three Lasers from BLYC have been assigned in two drysail spaces in B row. House Committee Report. Dwight Robertson reported. The sailing season is in full swing and the house committee is working hard to make sure the clubhouse is positioned to support all of our great activities and regattas. Quality Assured Cleaning has started their daily cleaning of the facility (Monday - Friday); and thus far we've received positive feedback on their performance. Paper / cleaning products were recently restockedwhich should carry us through. The perimeter of the house was treated with insect defense and this practice will be ongoing throughout the summer. The painting of the East side of the clubhouse was delayed (due to weather) and will be completed in. The door into the men's restroom needs to be adjusted and closer replaced which will happen asap. Members are reminded to clean up after private events / gatherings at the club. Racing Committee Report. Matt Fisher reported. Attendance at this year s Pursuit races has been higher than previous years. It was suspected that maybe the May 13 race was high because it was the first Wednesday of the year, but with 22 boats at the 3rd race, members appear to like pursuit races. This makes us want to propose adding at least 1 more race and it can Page 2 HSC Leadline July

3 be July 29th or August 26th. At the BOG meeting, let s discuss whether we add 1 or 2 pursuit races. Regarding the club championship, I recommend that we count 3 no matter how many we end up having. I hesitate to add 2 races because 2 fleets (Windmill and Flying Scot) are understandably not in favor of more pursuit races. The new nice big trophy glasses have a rather significant issue in that the screening comes off with a couple dish washings. The manufacturer sees the mistake and is replacing this year s order and we will have the replacement glasses in by the end of next week. With big help from Jim Ferguson and Chris Fogle we have replaced some items that have been getting lost in the last month. Radios and anchors have had a churn that I wasn t expecting, but we are ok in inventory now. Upcoming PROs have been asked to report anything that is missing to me or Chris. Safety Committee Report Chris Fogle reported. New RIB rescue boat performs best with 2 people in the boat. The docking for the new RIB needs to be addressed. Sail Instruction (SI) Report. Jamie Jones reported. As of 4, we have 178 students signed up for 202 class segments. Of those, 67 come back from previous years and 21 members are taking advantage of their discount for a total of around $36k in gross income so far. We added 75 students in May alone The numbers are pretty similar so far compared to last year with a bit more income so far. Those numbers don t include Columbus Academy, which already has 40 students enrolled (for another $6200). We have 8 newly certified Level 1 instructors working for us this summer! In fact, the IT told me that it was by far the best group of young instructors he s seen in several years coming from the same club. We did our Instructor Orientation the week before adult classes began. 8 of our daytime instructors came out, made lesson plans, set rainy/no wind activities, created sticker charts, set boats up, did their safety checks and practiced on the motorboats during our 9 hour session. The benefits were obvious when we opened the first week of day camp with temperatures in the low 50s and rain and they had plenty of activities for the kids to do on shore without breaking out Sailing Jeopardy! We launched the new RIB and have trained our head instructor, coaches and one other senior instructor on how to safely operate it. We ll discuss in more detail specifics about the RIB at the meeting, specifically an operator training program and on the water storage options going forward. We ll launch the big boats for our Adult Intermediate programs next Monday. SI is still looking for a couple of tent covers that will cover the cockpits of the Scots and Interlake in the water if anyone has something that will work. The annual Ranger Training night is scheduled forjuly 16th. Always a good time and a great way for us to help them out. Junior Race Team (JRT) Report. Doug Squires reported. With 23 members and great coaching, the Junior Racing Team is off to a flying start. Our first regatta was at Alum Creek, hosted by Buckeye Lake YC. With the help of Watercraft officers patrolling the courses, it was a safe and fun event. Head Coach Tara Foster completed her US Sailing Level 3 certification this past week. Assistant Coach Margot Sherman-Jollis has been doing a great job with fleet development of new Opti sailors. Our Hoover regatta was attended by almost 90 junior sailors with about 20 boats in each class. The breeze was up when Jim Cottle ran the 420/Laser course with Steve Lavender handling the Opti course. Steve introduced balloon racing to the Opti Green Fleet where they drag a balloon behind their boats and use boathandling skills to pop each balloon and this was a big hit. Chairpersons Kathy and Ray Trask and Julie and Louis Chicoine made sure the duties were assigned and everything ran smoothly. Kathy scored electronically which ensured awards were right after sailing. And what awards they were! Handy drybags with custom keychains featuring junior sailboat classes by Becky Harris made sure winners came away with some nice useful swag. All classes of boats were well represented by Hoover and all finished very well. The now famous Hoover Taco Bar was in full operation and pleased the masses. Numerous photos have been downloaded to the Hoover Dropbox account. Leadline Editor s Report. Rob Ciccotelli reported. He needs pictures and articles each month, including this one. See Minutes on page 3 Hoover Leadline July 2015 Page 3

If you aren t a racer, cruising is a great way to get out on the water, just sail and enjoy the camaraderie with other sailors, said Terry Burga, Interlaker and husband to Hoover s Cruise Director, Christine. The Cruisers list is growing, and we are continually seeing new faces. If you would like to be kept upto-date on when the Cruisers are going on the HOOVER CRUISERS by Jeff Tyndall water, Christine at burgafam@columbus.rr.com. Currently, there are no set cruising times, but setting something up is just an notice away. So, if you are ready, let s get going! Please be mindful of Saturday regattas and Sunday afternoon racing. 6 Hoover Junior Race Team Members Ryan Squires and Scott Trask have both qualified for the Chubb US Junior Championships in Wianno, MA August 2-6. the Chubb U.S. Junior Championships for the Sears, Bemis, and Smythe trophies in August. Go pond sailors go! Be sure to check out the results (I-LYA takes top 7 spots in radial) and all the excellent I-LYA finishes: atta_results.php?regatta_id=9870&show_crew=1 The Hoover JRT has done very well at our I-LYA Ryan won the Area E Qualifier with all first place finishes (this throw-out was a 2d) and Scott did very well as well. Ray Trask was on-hand and wanted to pass along that a regatta organizer from South Carolina commented on Hoover s excellent program. It is great to get this national recognition for Hoover and will certainly help the boys as they make college applications. Other I-LYA sailors also did very well at Area Es. The 420 fleet was won by Ian Moran and Abie Griggs from EWYC. Finishing second were Alyson Turner and Jessica Lietz from Chautauqua. These sailors will join the Thistle team from Pymatuning as they travel to Wianno, MA to compete in regattas. The Port Clinton YC junior regatta is July 17. Hats off to the many Opti Green Fleeters travelling to regattas and to our coaches! I especially want to congratulate all Optis who sailed Opti Great Lakes at Sandusky Sailing July 9 10 with Coach Margot, great job! The Laser Team is training with Bob France at the Put-In-Bay Laser Clinic getting ready for I-LYA Junior Bay Week, we hope to report good results from JBW again this year. The Junior Race Team thanks all those that have supported our fundraising efforts. The great coaching from Tara and Margot has paid off. All I-LYA Traveler Series regattas have had multiple sailors on the podium! We proudly wear our Hoover pinnies on the water and our burgee shirts on land to let them know we are HOOVER! Seven teams, two from Hoover, competed to decide a qualifier for the Sears Cup Finals at Cape Cod the first week of August. Jamie Jones organized the event, and he reported that among the finalists were: 1. Pymatuming; 2. Edgewater; 3. Cowan (with Ryan Squires crewing), and Hoover (with skipper Scott Trask and Mason Bibler and Grace Yingling crewing). Jamie said the teams competed in pouring rain and 5-12 knots of wind. RECENT BIRTHDAYS BOB FRANCE's birthday was July 18, ad he vacationed on his "big boat". We don't know Bob's age, but he just seems to keep getting younger. CLYDE FINDLEY celebrated his 78th birthday on July 20 by racing his Thistle (as usual). Clyde also just keeps getting younger. RECENT ENGAGEMENT Jaimie Chicoine and Dylan Finneran sailed together at the Coast Guard Academy. He was her skipper, and she was his crew. Apparently that arrangement worked out so well that they have decided to embark upon a lifetime of teamwork. The wedding will take place next Spring (details will follow). Proud mom Julie showed me a photo of the happy couple and they look just great together--i hope they will alwas be as happy as they are now! RECENT RACE COMMITTEE Fleet Captain Louis Chicoine thanks all of our Fleet members who showed up so willingly and did such a fine job on Race Committee and asks us to keep up the good work. CURRENTLY, THISTLE DISTRICTS are being raced this weekend (July 18 and 19) at North Cape. Results will not be available before we go to press, so read all about it next month. LOOKING AHEAD AT OUR THISTLE REGATTA SCHEDULE for the rest of the season: July 25 Thistle Women's & Junior Champioships, Ft. Walton, FL July Thistle National Championships, Ft. The juniors are racing the O'Pen BIC dinghy--it looks really sweet! The AC official website is LOOING AT THE RESERVOIR The Lake is half a foot higher than normal and the water is quite warm. With all of this rain, I think our next project should be building an ark-- does anybody know how to convert feet to cubits? And of course we will need lots of animals. There go the rules about permitting pets on the grounds (unless we can consider some skippers as other species). SEE YOU ON THE WATER! Hoover Leadline July 2015 Page 7

8 INTERLAKE INTERLUDES By Bill Kotys With the advent of Cruising Saturdays at HSC, it occurred to me that there must be more to the cruising story. The fact is that my Interlake came with provisions for motor mount and with reefing points on the mainsail. I bought a cruiser! My internet search for dinghy cruising is the DCA. The Dinghy Cruising Association of the UK was formed in 1955 to encourage all forms of small boat sailing other than racing. The membership comprises people from all walks of life, sharing the same love of messing about in boats. One of the cruisers, Nick, raced at a local club for a few years before getting bored of going round in circles". He said though he needed to relearn old habits: "in dinghy cruising it's safety first, speed second - the opposite of dinghy racing!" Rallies are held across the UK and overseas. They range from day sails and short camp cruises in sheltered waters, to coastal expeditions over a couple of weeks. Some members have extensive passage sailing experience, in boats that they have developed over some The Suffolk Beach Punt is 16 feet long with a 6 6 beam. It weighs 1136 lbs and has a sail area of 152 sq. ft. years. Some, however, are just putterers who enjoy a sail out to an island, or round to that secluded bay for a swim. Liz however, never stopped: "As a teenager I crewed in racing dinghies at my local sailing club. I got a taste for camping on boats while sailing. As a keen sailor and also a keen camper, it seemed natural to marry the two and camp in a boat." The dinghycruising.org.uk website has much information about their cruising and the dingy s they use. Here s one that caught my eye: The Suffolk Beach Punt The owner of the pictured boat, Paul Harrison, uses it for cruising both camping. This boat will happily take 4 to 6 people day sailing. It is stable because of its wideness and fairly flat bottom. Its sail plan can be played with to suit wind conditions and it s been sailed comfortably in 21 to 33 knot winds. A boom tent is easily fitted to give sufficient space for 2 people to camp aboard. Harrison has sailed this boat on the West Coast of Scotland, Lake Windermere and Baltic (Denmark). This boat fits the cruising he does: he packs the boat with supplies for 2 weeks for 2. There is a boom tent which covers the cockpit allowing space for 2 to comfortably sleep and cook. Storage is made of lockers under the foredeck, See Interludes on page 9 Page 8 HSC Leadline July

9 MORE JULY PHOTOS Interludes continued from page 8 lockers under the seat and a stern locker. Some items can also be stored under the thwart. Sleeping is either on the floor boards or the thwart as it is wide and long enough for an average sized person. It has a 4hp motor on a bracket on the stern of the boat which is powerful enough to move this boat in most conditions up to about a F4/5 wind. As a Yawl it can either sail with Jib/Main & Mizzen. The main has 2 reefing points. Writer s note: I shall be in the U.K. for two weeks in August and hope to see cruisers like this while there. It d be a thrill to take a cruise in punt! Check out the website. It gives cruising a whole new meaning Hoover Leadline July 2015 Page 9
