4250 Smothers Road, P.O. Box575 Editor: Rob Ciccotelli COMMODORE S COMMENTS by Peter Rothman Westerville, Ohio robertciccotelli@wowway.com Wow what a month since the last LeadLine. On June 25th I got a very interesting set of texts from Jamie Jones. The one that said it all to me was the group of sail instruction members who had just walked across the footbridge with this wonderful look of bewilderment. They were thigh deep in water and it was RISING. I headed for HSC. When I got to the Tara had already used boat power and kid power to get the ramp and Opti docks into close proximity of dry land. Excellent use of doing the best with what you got. Great work Tara. The main (I) dock and the mooring dock were a big mess. They had floated off of their pivot points completely. No way to fix until the water goes down. So the 25th was spent letting out chain, watching sail instruction and watching the water rise. The kids in SI are awesome. The water eventually reached within an inch of covering the railing on the foot bridge. Water was lapping at the anchor and gas lockers. You could dangle your feet in the water on the Windmill memorial bench. The water reached 5 feet over the damn according to USGS. Then it went down at about the same rate. So when I stopped by the on the way home on Friday everything was now high and too dry. A BIG thank you to SAVE THE DATE! The following BOG members and Committee Chairs attended, constituting a quorum: Commodore: Peter Rothman, Treasurer: Mark White, Secretary: Marty Sweterlitsch, Rear Commodore/House Committee Chair: Stephanie Bahr, Safety Committee Chair: Chris Fogle, Social Committee Chair: Sarah Lynn, Sail Instruction Chair: Jamie Jones, Race Committee Chair: Dave Stetson, Publicity Committee Chair: Kathy Bachman, Leadline Editor: Robert Ciccotelli, Past Commodore/Planning and Projects Chair: Bill Smith, Vice Commodore/Grounds Committee Chair: Jeff Tyndall, Junior Sailing Chairs: Doug Squires See Minutes on page 2 HSC Leadline July 2014 page 1

Minutes continued from page 1 Absent: Member at Large/Docks Committee Chair: Steve Rendina, Membership Secretary: Lisa Aspery. 1.0 Committee Reports Treasurer s Report. Total Revenue was strong in May, $4,227 more than forecasted, driven by Dues/Fees and a huge month for Sail Instruction. Income is running nominally ahead of last year on a year to date basis. We expect Dues/Fees to tail off normally for the balance of the year and finish right on budget. June and July are always big months for Sail Instruction income. If trends continue, SI will bring in nearly $60,000 in income this year. Current total revenue projections are that HSC will end 2014 just short of our original budget and just ahead of last year. Total Expenses were very close to forecast for the month, with small, offsetting variances. While expenses are running $3,451 ahead of last year at the point, most of the difference is in the timing of expenditures and we expect to finish 2014 about $7-8,000 less than in Considering all revenue and expense forecasts, HSC could invest up to $14,000 in major improvements and stay within our zero based budget for the year. None of the major improvement budget has been committed at this point. The estimated amount available is refreshed each month. As a reminder, expenditures outside of regular maintenance and operation of the club are governed in Section 10E of the HSC Constitution. Secretary s Report. Marty Sweterlitsch presented the Secretary s report. She moved to approve the minutes of June 2014 BOG Meeting. The motion was seconded and passed. Membership Committee Report. Membership Status as of June 4, 2014 New members since last report: Young Adult: Brett Freeman Thistle Jr Sailing: Freewalt, Schumann, Landshof, Vineyard EV: Ron Bone Day Sailer Docks Committee Report. The geese are no longer respecting our Black Swan guardians and have been leaving their waste on the docks. Peter has ed the general membership requesting routine sweeping of the docks as needed by anyone who utilizes the docks. If that plan doesn't work, then we will look at putting string on the docks again. Grounds Committee Report. Jeff Tyndall reported. Day Spots. The Grounds Committed has created day spots in the lower parking area to alleviate the MCScow lower parking lot issue. These spaces have been designated for cars WITH trailers only. These spaces are marked with green lines, making them distinguishable. Please note: All those making use of the spaces must vacate them by nightfall. Any crew and/or guests should be directed to park in the upper lot. Day spots may also be used for out-of-town regatta guests. If you are currently parked in one of these designated spots, please move immediately. All those in violation will be ticketed ($10 to the beer fund). Block House. Over the years, the Block House has become the club catch-all for dock materials. To clean up and de-clutter this area that is seen by all who come to the, all items have been moved from the Block House to the southwest corner of the lower lot. Please continue to place items for dock storage here. Dry Sail Area. Many thanks to Commodore Peter Rothman for putting the word out about cleaning up the overall appearance of the dry sail area. Since that time, the Grounds Committee has gone to work to remove trash, old tires, pieces of wood and the blue dock flotation barrels. Take note of the new clean look of this area. House Committee Report. Stephanie Bahr. The house was ready for open house and looked great. Preparation for porch overhang maintenance and paint/staining is being coordinated. Bee eradication will be done by new provider in the very near future. Cleaning company has started, they clean 5 days a week until Labor Day then decrease to once a week, as club use drops. Discussed timing related to cleaning times and sail instruction. Racing Committee Report. Dave Stetson reported that the committee boat canopy has been repaired. Many thanks to John Church. page 2 HSC Leadline July

Safety Committee Report Chris Fogle had nothing to report. Sail Instruction (SI) Report. Jamie Jones reported that as of June 1, we have 165 students signed up for 192 class segments, 52 of those return from previous seasons with only 12 members taking advantage of the 25% discount. We remain ahead of most seasons with the exception of 2013, but after a strong May, we re starting to close the gap, being only about $2000 behind last season s record enrollment/income. Sessions are starting to fill out with our first 2 adult beginner classes closed due to strong enrollment. The big boats have been rigged and are ready for our Adult Intermediate and Adventure Sailing camps. An article will likely come out in the Life Section of the Columbus Dispatch in July about our learn to sail programs. Junior Race Team (JRT) Report. Doug Squires reported that the Hoover Junior Race Team participated in our first I-LYA regatta on Saturday May 31st with great success. Winds were light to medium in on-again off-again shifty conditions, but the day was sunny and beautiful. Coach Brett Freeman s enthusiasm and great on-the-water coaching was obvious to all. Buckeye Lake was a gracious host in their historic clubhouse. Two 420 teams from Hoover competed against a field of s. Skipper Valerie Oyer and crew Jacob Ebright finished mid-fleet in tough field of seasoned sailors and 420 sailors Kaylie Feewalt and Katie Thompson beat the home BLYC team. Ryan Squires, Tyler Harris, Scott Trask and Luke Schumann sailed their Laser Radials to place 1st, 3d and 4th and 8th respectively out of 19 boats in five races sailed, with just a few points separating the top five boats. In Optis, Grace Squires placed 3d, Sara Schumann placed 6th and Nadia Renolds placed 8th. The Opti girls competed against veteran Opti sailors of mostly boys, many of whom have been competing on a national level for several years. The word in 420s and Optis this year so far is Girl Power! Other Optis plan to start practicing with the JRT after other conflicts pass, like school, and after a week or two of exposure to Jamie Jones super-duper junior sailor competency machine (the SI Program). Brett has been running effective practices and held one practice focusing on boat maintenance and repair. Our JRT 420s, which had been laid-up for some time showing the signs of storage, now out shine the other s newer boats. Clinics for junior Laser sailors started and will take place every Monday evening and a one-week clinic is planned at Put-In-Bay the week before the I-LYA Junior Bay Week. JRT members who show competency may race Wednesday evenings along with their coach, so RC s should be aware they may have 420 s, Lasers and Optis on the course. The one-day Hoover Junior Regatta which is an I-LYA Travelers Series event is Saturday June 7th from 10am to 5pm. Mentor Harbor YC plans to bring a 30 foot trailer to transport boats and bunk junior sailors overnight with a chaperone. The trailer plans to arrive Friday night, so please let me if there are any concerns regarding the trailer while it and its residents are guests at our. Members of the JRT plan to help with publicity in September, but please let me know if the JRT can be of assistance to your committee or the. JRT members enjoyed the exhibition sailing they did during the Open House and several had questions and positive comments from visitors during the event. Brett has taken on a leadership role with the I-LYA junior program for planning and projects and his efforts working with other s is making Hoover look real good. Leadline Editor s Report. 5 Commodore continued from page 1 the Docks crew for getting everything back in the water, and the 2 pivot points fixed. Another big thank you to Graham Alexander and Dave Stetson for building and testing a chain recovery contraption that works really well. I missed the July 4th series of races and the potluck but I understand it went very well. Thanks to the MC Scow fleet for taking the lead. Please excuse me for the next few paragraphs while I gush about HSC and my Windmill Fleet 60. I want to thank all of the BOG/HSC Committee chairs and their committee members, for getting the looking so nice for the Windmill Nationals. Over this last weekend we had 37 boats racing, about a hundred people to take care of and it all went great. The received so many compliments from the out of town contingent it darn near made me blush :) I want to thank, as Commodore and Windmill fleet member the incredible job done by Craig Tovell in getting the race organized, Evelyn Ferguson for organizing the rest of us and keeping us in line, Kathy Bachman for her planning and organization, and her crew, Hallie Bourne, Carol Prebihalo, Julie Himmelsbach, Dixie Michelson, Joy Yingling, Debbie Hughes, Laura Piersall, Juliann Piersall, Bryn Bachman, Jackie LaMuth, Nancy Bunge, Sarah Steward, Nancy Tinker, Chris Fogle (Der Bier Meister), Ed Yingling, Arnie Ishizuka, Ed Prebihalo, Jim Ferguson, Bernie Himmelsbach, and Chris Bunge. Great work all. Of course no good deed goes unpunished so what are we going to do when 37 boats show up for Midwestern's next year??? YIKES! Photo by Jessi Walker HSC Leadline July 2014 page 5

JUNIOR SAILING by Doug Squires Our junior sailors in their cool pinnies have been representing Hoover and doing very well at various I-LYA Traveler Series regattas. Coach Brett Freeman has been a great leader and mentor for our junior sailors. Brett begins each week with a what to plan for this week and this has translated into more boats at away regattas. We have all worked very hard to keep the boats and the areas designated to the JRT ship-shape, so please let me know if there are any issues I should be aware of. 420: one goal this year was to get 420 teams on the race courses and the skippers and crew have been doing that with fantastic results. Skipper Valerie Oyer is currently ranked 7th and Skipper Kaylie Freewalt is currently ranked 18th out of skippers in the I-LYA, wow! Crew Jacob Ebright has been doing fantastic in setting chutes and is ranked 7th out 63 I-LYA crewmembers. Brett has been heavily training and working with the 420s and it has paid off! Laser Radial: Currently Laser Radial sailors Ryan Squires, Tyler Harris and Scott Trask are 1, 2, and 3 respectively in the Traveler Series. Luke Schumann and Mason Bibler are doing very well in a very competitive fleet of 57 boats and both at top finishes at the North Cape YC regatta. We are so proud to see these Hoover sailors doing so well and improving at each regatta. At the US Sailing Area E Qualifiers in Detroit, in between white squalls (literally), Scott Trask placed 5th overall in some extremely windy conditions against a tough field of competitors. These Laser sailors will be at our clinic at Put-In-Bay before I- LYA Junior Bay Week which is scheduled for July Go Lasers! Opti: Seeing these small boats and young sailors on the open waters often draws remarks, how do they do that? Well, the Hoover JRT members do it very well! Grace Squires is currently in 3d place in the Traveler Series with Nadia Reynolds and Sara Schumann and Grace Yingling not far behind. The Opti Girl Power of Hoover has regularly been beating the boys and they do it with style. It is fun to see the confidence of these young ladies grow as their sailing and racing improves. Brett has reinforced the Corinthian spirit of sailing in each JRT member and with each finish comes a thank you from our JRT members. HSC Leadline July 2014 page 7

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GUYS! BOB FRANCE hit the big 6-0 pretty hard from the sound of it. This reporter tracked him down at his birthday party at Put-In-Bay, and there were lots of "happy" noises in the background. (I therefore suggested to Bob's son, Ben, that they throw his dad in the lake, and Ben seemed to think it was a pretty good idea.) CLYDE FINDLEY will be 77 years young on July 20 and he's going strong. (Be sure to ask Clyde if it's possible to have too many hats!) DICK JONES, my very significant other, will turn 77 on July 28 and we're gonna hit Red Lobster for that one--we're always looking for an excuse to hit Red Lobster.. REGATTA RESULTS: A HAIL FROM THE RAIL by Ann Jones (with a tow from Julie and Louis Chicoine) HOOVER INDEPENDENCE SERIES: 1. Bill Miller; 2. Bob France; 3. Clyde Findley, and 4. John Church. LAKE ERIE DISTRICTS AT VERMILION saw 35 boats compete in two races on Saturday in a shifty South breeze. The race committee was protested over the first race and that race was thrown out. Racing was abandoned for the day at 2 PM, at which point the sea breeze filled in and a bunch of frustrated sailors sat on shore and wished they were racing. Conditions were much better on Sunday with knot winds, and three races were completed. According to District Governor Ben France, top finishers included: 1. Craig Koschalk; 2. Jack Finefrock; 3. Ben France; 4. Tom Hubbell, and 5. Kris Klotz. GREAT LAKES INTERDISTRICTS AT NORTH CAPE YACHT CLUB on July had 33 boats competing in 4 races (2 each day). Regional VP Steve Lavender said that conditions on Saturday were perfect with SW 10-knot winds. He said that on Sunday, when they woke up the wind was really honking but it dropped at 10:30 AM to about 15 knots and higher for the first race and they did the second race in about knots. Steve summed up the Sunday conditions as "better than perfect"! And the winners were: 1. Skip Dieball; 2. Paul Abdullah; 3. Jack Finefrock; 4. Steve White; 5. Craig Koschalk; 6; Jesse Shedden; 7. Kyle Finefrock; 8. Bruce King; 9. Tom Hubbell; 10 John Shockey; 11. Ben France (Kevin Tschantz crewing); 12. Kit Holzaepfel; 13. Steve Lavender; 18. Bob France, and 19. Brett Freeman. THISTLE NATIONALS, SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN, July 25- August 1. So far, 50 boats have preregistered. Former fleet member Howard Hill is Regatta Chairman, so it should be a great event. AND ON ANOTHER FRONT... Hamilton Island Yacht, the Challenger of Record, withdrew Team Australia from the 35th America's Cup to be held in Meanwhile Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) introduced its team in London last month and will be bidding to host two America's Cup World Series events in 2015/16 at its new home in Portsmouth. RESERVOIR WATCH: The water is warm and the lake is full. The water is also pretty clean. We are fortunate to be sailing in a reservoir that contains the City of Columbus drinking water supply, because that means the City needs to ensure that contamination levels are low. Did you know that geese guck contributes to the water contamination problem? Unfortunately, the state of Ohio does not close beaches when colonies of E. coli and blue green algae pose a threat to people or pets. The state just posts signs instead. Therefore, if you are wondering where it is safe to race (and potentially capsize) on other bodies of water, you should check either the Ohio Department of Health, Bureau of Environmental Health website or the ODNR websites for the latest water safety updates. On a happier note, according to the Thistle Class website, "The Thistle is the most popular crewed sailboat in the United States. We pride ourselves on great competition on the water and a family atmosphere off the water". And yes, from my 35 years of sailing a Thistle, I've learned that we are a big, friendly, competitive family. Getting a Thistle was one of the best decisions I ever made. SEE YOU ON THE WATER! page 8 HSC Leadline July

INTERLAKE INTERLUDES By Bill Kotys The Spring and Holiday Series are in full swing with 8 boats scoring races in the Spring series and 18 boats in the Holiday Series. These results do NOT include July 4 th Holiday weekend racing. We had 18 boats scoring races with a real logjam from 3-7. Jamie Jones tell us that If you need crew (regular weekend racing crew) please let him know. He has 4 or 5 students from adult learn to sail that are very eager to come out on Sundays and race. You can contact Jamie to help you put a crew together. It is certainly possible to extend this Interlake Interludes column into a live forum online. Of most interest would be crew volunteers to post their availability to sail. And, for the novices out there, it d be a good way to post questions for the experienced sailors to answer. 10 MILLING AROUND By Craig Tovell (Westerville Ohio) After a year's preparation from accepting the NAs bid Windmill Fleet 60 of Hoover Sailing (HSC) hosted the 2014 Windmill Nationals, July 17 to the 20th. After relentless promotion by , phone calls, grass roots and especially class Godfather, Alan Chauvenet regatta turnout almost doubled from Thirty seven (37) sailors from all corners of the continent arrived from Seattle, California, New Hampshire, Florida gathered to race at Hoover Sailing Located in the heart of Ohio northeast of Columbus. We were privileged to have 5 National Champions competing. US Sailing Judge, past national champion, coach of Ohio State Sailing, instructor and NetJets meteorologist, Jamie Jones was PRO. He organized a crack crew to run races with the help of RC maven Jerry Harris from Clearwater Beach, Florida and MC Masters Champ Richard Blake who are old college buddies. Hoover sailors Mark White and John Church ran chase boats with Ohio State racers. On the front-end, Mike Mickelson and Jim Ferguson painstakingly wrote the NOR and SI. No detail was ignored nor potential loophole allowed. Measurement was conducted by Fleet 60 beforehand weeks in advance alleviating the workstation where only a few competitors that had new equipment or sails checked. Outgoing Class Measurer Roy Sherman approved standards and results. As storms blew through in the early week temperatures dropped to the low 60s the morning and low 80s during the day making camping for competitors more bearable 2014 Windmill National Champions, Ethan and Trudy Bixby of St. Petersburg, Florida than normal summer heat -- like a Cape Cod day. The Wednesday breezes diminished to 10 mph on Thursday where the multi-class sailor, Mark White single-handedly ran several practice races for competitors. Tim Bachman coordinated media guests the Columbus Dispatch for the digital version printed in Sunday's paper where they conducted interviews with event organizers and participants shining light on HSC and sailing in general ( 07/18/windmill-sailing-championship.html). Fleet 60 hosted a welcome party and Happy Hour as they did throughout the three-day event organized by Kathy Bachman and Sarah Lynn along with a large crew comprised of fleet members. Friday, July 18th was again clear, cool and sunny and wind decreased because of the passing storm to an odd 10-8 mph easterly wind veering inconsistently 30 to either side. Teams that won the start on the favored left and were left hung out to dry as the right side filled from the south bridge and the weather mark tucked up towards the club on the east shore made for sticky groundings on the 2W course. The opposite breeze shifting filling from the right frustrating many Regardless, three past national champions persevered and despite shifty conditions it seemed as if the top 10 boats could be interchangeable attesting to a high skill set. A lunch break was allowed after race three wrapped up the and a fourth race followed. Highlights of day one were John and daughter Alli Coleman of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania punching into the top with a fourth place in Race One. Seems someone did some tuning this season. Improved speed and performance was marked and noticeable. In Race Two Alan Taylor and crew Erik Arnesen also placed fourth. page 10 HSC Leadline July

And class President, Lon Ethington and Meg Gimmi winning the rubber ring or "bullet" if you prefer in Race Three. And, in Race Four, Chris and wife Nancy Demler of Lebanon, Ohio (by way of Massachusetts) had their best race with a third. Saturday, July 19 was again clear, cool and sunny however the fog from 82 water depressed the wind until the clouds opened and the land heated somewhat. Postponement continued past noon for breeze to build from the north. To bide time the Nationals meeting was held during the postponement. All motions were accepted citing improved membership, budget and boat building. Thanks went to outgoing president Lon Ethington for four years of service who almost singlehandedly and literally rebuilt the class retooling used boats making good affordable boats available to new sailors. His tenure was long extended by the members rather than reshuffling executives as in every normal organization -- which is a testament to his work. Without the headaches of leadership Lon and Meg will be allowed to focus racing which they're very good at. Incoming president Ralph Sponar of Pasadena, Maryland with the support of his wife Sandy and son Matthew will bring energy to the class which should make transition seamless. Boat-builder and past national champion from Deerfield, New Hampshire, Larry Christian will take on the position of Class Measurer filling the shoes of stalwart Roy (and Marcey) Sherman who have relocated to Seattle. Alan Taylor from Greensboro North Carolina will continue as web master with enhanced duties bringing the class newsletter "the Jouster" electronically as Vice President. Also, to bide time, instead of waiting for after the Saturday banquet, Fleet 60 had a silent draw raffle with door prizes where "Everybody's a winner at Hoover!" for all 37 teams from sponsors APS, Dieball Sailing, InfiniLube, North Sails, Sailors Tailor, Rene Dutton State Farm and West Marine. Thanks to all! Big, goofy fun. Later in the day with Jamie's prestidigitation being on the money, a breeze filled from the north as expected. Again with oscillating conditions, the pin end and the west shore appeared favorite. Race five was the cathartic point in the regatta allowing teams to lock own their standings for the most part, but oddly how the worm turns. Dave Nielsen of Auburn, California and long-time Windmill skipper crewing, Glenn Strohl of Greensboro, North Carolina proved otherwise - - leading from start to finish for a memorable bullet. Many sailors in contention acquired their throwout in race six (if not in Race One) as racing time limit ended to go into Sunday. For the last day of sailing, a light northerly breeze came down the reservoir seeming to favor the west shore again with a square starting line for W2. Needless to say, going west was not recommend as the breeze filled from the Northeast. Although a similar cast played at the top of the fleet locking down there positions, many teams with mid-pack standings acquired their throwouts. But, as the race committee wrestled with a similar light easterly breeze from day one, abandonment was rightfully declared to end the Regatta. Eight-time national champion put together an almost flawless performance to win. Former NA champ Arthur and son Max Anosov placed a solid second. Former NA champ John and wife Anne Dannenberger placed a solid third. Defending NA champ and Regatta Chair Craig and wife Cindy Tovell placed a solid fourth. Regular NA contender Larry Christian and crew Alex Gould lock down fifth place. All in all, the Turnout, Food and Festivities, Race Management, difficult Racing Conditions and especially Camaraderie made this event special and memorable. Thanks all for helping and participating. A large contingent of Mid-Atlantic sailors will be hosting 2015 NAs at Rock Hall Maryland -- a wonderful rustic fishing and rural port whom hosted many nationals past. 12 SCOW SCOOP By Jim Bingham Personally this year has been much different than many of the recent past. The sailing season is over half over and I ve sailed very few races. I was one of the more active sailors for most of the years in the last decade. Now I m finding less time for racing. I ve even missed both holiday series this year. One of our inactive members, Mike Keenan, placed 3 rd in the Canadian MC Championship that was held on June 21-22, MCSA Masters Championship was held on June 11-14, 2014 at Rush Creek YC, TX. We had two sailors compete. Richard Blake finished 23 rd and Jay Huling finished 30 th. While I ve been less active, the scow fleet has more new members in the fleet.
