2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This reprt prvides details f the test demnstratin installatin f a Waterl Barrier cut-ff wall at the KeySpan Crpratin Rckaway Park Frmer MGP Site, lcated in Rckaway Park, Queens Cunty, NY (hereafter referred t as the site). The test demnstratin was cnducted frm February 13 th t February 17 th, The test demnstratin utilized fur (4) WEZ95 prfile Waterl Barrier sheet piles which were field spliced t achieve a ttal length f 120 ft. Fur 65 ft full-length sheet piles were installed. The tp five ft reinfrced sectin was remved and a 60 ft sectin was spliced t field fabricate the 120 ft lng pile. After the driving prcess, the interlck jints f the sheet piling were flushed full length with pressurized water t simulate the primary flushing and gruting prcesses. Once the flushing was terminated the piles were extracted. The piles were decntaminated using water during the extractin. The decntaminatin water was allwed t perclate back int the grund frm the trench. The trench was then backfilled. During the extractin the individual piles were cut just abve the splice plates resulting in a tp sectin f apprximately 58 feet in length and a bttm sectin with the splice plate being apprximately 62 feet in length. The extracted sheets were stred n site fr use in a cntemplated future full scale prject. The fur spare piles als remained n site. Based upn the test demnstratin results, we are cnfident that a Waterl Barrier cntainment wall using 120 ft spliced WEZ95 sheet piles can be installed at the site safely and effectively. ii

WATERLOO BARRIER SYSTEM The Waterl Barrier is a lw hydraulic cnductivity grundwater cut-ff wall, which was develped by the Waterl Centre fr Grundwater Research (WCGR) at the University f Waterl, under the directin f Prfessr Jhn Cherry. This patented grundwater cntainment system is cmpsed f the fllwing tw basic elements: Custm rlled steel sheet piling incrprating a sealable cavity at the jint, and Site specific gruts used fr sealing the Waterl Barrier jints. The sheet piling is available in a 7.5 mm (0.295 inch) thickness (WZ75) and 9.5 mm (0.375 inch) thickness (WEZ95) and has been rlled in lengths up t 24.3 meters (80 feet). The patented sectin prduced by this rlling methd has the fllwing advantages: It prvides a cavity that can be inspected and can be used t cnfirm the integrity f the sheets and jints after driving, and It prvides a cntrlled leak path that can be sealed with varius gruting cmpunds. 2. WATERLOO BARRIER SHEET PILE SPECIFICATIONS The steel sheet piling used t cnstruct the cut-ff wall at the site was the WEZ95 prfile f the Waterl Barrier. A typical crss-sectin and general sectin prperties f these sheet piles are shwn in Figure 1. The Waterl Barrier WEZ95 sheet piles are patented sectins with enlarged female jints that allw fr the installatin f a site-specific sealant material t seal the barrier wall. A key prcedure in ensuring prper installatin f the WEZ95 sheet piles is the attachment f a ft plate at the base f every enlarged female jint (Figure 2 and Pht 1). SHEET PILE INSTALLATION EQUIPMENT The equipment used during this demnstratin prject included the fllwing: 140-tn mbile Crane; APE 200 vibratry hammer and diesel pwer unit; JLG telescpic bm lift, and Welding and cutting equipment. 7 4. WATERLOO BARRIER INSTALLATION PROCEDURES All sheet piles are driven with the male jint leading in the directin f pile installatin. The purpse f this prcedure was t ensure that the enlarged jint (female jint) with the ft plate was driven nt the smaller interlck (male jint), thus minimizing the entry f debris int the cavity. The sheet pile QA/QC inspectins are perfrmed in the fllwing three stages: 4.1. Visual Inspectin A visual survey f the Waterl Barrier sheet piles are cnducted by C3. The fllwing is a brief utline f the inspectin pints: 1) Pile Thickness - T verify the thickness f the sheet piling. 2) Linearity Inspectin - T ensure that the piles have nt been bent r bwed during transprtatin t the site. 3) Surface Cnditin - The surface f the piles are inspected fr defects and/r defrmatins prir t installatin. 4) Sheet Pile Length - Each sheet pile is measured t cnfirm the specified length. 5) Pile Marking One-ft graduatins are marked n the sheet piles t assist in the recrding f driving lgs during pile installatin. 6) Ft Plate Inspectin - A visual inspectin f each ft plate is cnducted t ensure prper installatin f the ft plate prir t driving Mnitring f Sheet Pile Driving Recrds are cllected fr each f the sheet piles as they are installed. The C3 QA/QC Engineer, Mr. Je Heinisch, P.Eng., was n-site during the entire driving prcess. The fllwing is a brief descriptin f the dcumented inspectin items: 1) Sheet Pile Identificatin - Each sheet pile is numbered fr reference purpses. 2) Driving Recrds - Driving recrds are cllected n a laptp cmputer fr each sheet pile installed in the Waterl Barrier System. These recrds dcument the driving rates and any ntes regarding the installatin. 3) Driving Depth - The installed depth f each sheet pile is measured and dcumented. These depths are a measure f amunt f sheet pile driven. They are relative t the tp elevatin f the sheet pile, nt the elevatin f the grund level. 4) Sheet Pile Alignment - After the installatin f the sheet piles, the alignment f each pile is recrded using a digital inclinmeter. 8 4.3. Sealable Cavity Inspectin Figure 3: Waterl Barrier Sheet Pile Axes Inspectin f the sealable cavities is the final stage f the Sheet Pile Installatin QA/QC Prgram. Jint flushing equipment is used t inspect the integrity f each f the WEZ95 sealable cavities. The first time a jint is flushed is referred t as primary flushing (see Pht 4). Water delivered under pressure is used t flush ut each jint until clean. Primary jint flushing is cmpleted t determine if: A sund sealable cavity exists in the installed sheet piles, and The sealable cavity is free f bstructins fr the full length. The fllwing is a descriptin f the dcumented inspectin items: 1) Depth Measurement - The depth f penetratin f the inspectin prbe is recrded fr each jint, alng with any f the inspectr s cmments. 2) Cnditin f Sealable Cavity - Any unusual cnditins encuntered during the inspectin f the sealable cavities are recrded. Dcumented cnditins culd include any f the fllwing: Damage t the tp f jint (due t driving); Debris present at the base f the sealable cavity, and Obstructins/restrictins present in the sealable cavity. 3) Inspectin Reprt - Deficiencies are reprted and addressed prir t the initiatin f jint sealing. PROJECT OVERVIEW Paulus, Sklwski and Sartr Engineering PC was cntracted by KeySpan Crpratin t versee the test demnstratin f the Waterl Barrier cut-ff wall system n the site. C3 Envirnmental Limited as the licensed Waterl Barrier installer was cntracted by KeySpan Crpratin t cmplete the test demnstratin including the Quality Assurance/Quality Cntrl (QA/QC) inspectin. J.D. Psillic, Inc. was cntracted by C3 Envirnmental Limited t cnduct the pile driving f the barrier wall Driveability and flushing demnstratin The bjectives f the test demnstratin were: T test and cnfirm n site the fllwing: 65 ft reinfrced full-length sheet pile drivability; Field splicing f a 60 ft sheet pile t the previusly driven 65 ft sheet cut t 60 feet; The drivability f a field spliced 120 ft lng sheet; Requirement fr reinfrcement n the tp and bttm f sheet piles, and Suitability f the selected vibratry hammer fr sheet pile installatin; Jint flushing capability. 10 The Waterl Barrier cut-ff wall was installed frm February 13 th t the 17 th, 2006 at the site. Prir t the installatin f the sheet piles, PS&S arranged t have a 20 feet lng trench cleared at the site t a depth f eight feet t allw the sheet pile installatin wrk t be unhindered by shallw subsurface bstructins. The test demnstratin wall was installed in this trenched area. Bttm and Tp Sheet Piles The Waterl Barrier cut-ff wall system was cnstructed frm eight pieces f WEZ95 sheet piling, fur 65 ft full-length sheets with ftplate and fur 60 ft length sheet piles. Details f the sheet pile fabricatin are shwn in Appendix E. Installatin Sequence The driving f the fur 65 ft lng sheet piles with reinfrcing tp and bttm was successfully cmpleted using nly the vibratry hammer. These 65 ft bttm sheets were driven leaving abut 6 feet expsed abve grund surface. Once the bttm sheets were installed, the 5 ft reinfrced sectins were cut ff f the tp f the sheet. Subsequently the tp 60 ft piles were threaded nt the installed bttm sheets and welded tgether. The welds at the splices were full penetratin welds with additinal reinfrcement plates (fish plates) which were welded n each side f the sheets. During the welding prcess, the sheets were held in place by the vibratry hammer. A safety tag line als remained attached t the tp f the sheets. Once the splices were cmpleted the piles were driven t final elevatin f 119 +/- ft belw grund surface (bgs) by mid day Thursday 16 February. Jint Flushing Primary flushing was begun after the sheet pile driving was cmpleted. The first jint (jint 1) f any wall is nt flushed fr this reasn since there is n male jint. All three jints were successfully flushed. All three jints were flushed using bth a 5/8 and 1/2 flushing hse. The first 105 t 110 ft was dne fairly easily. Belw that the jints were mre difficult and it was necessary t use the hammer t shake the piles t get t full depth. After flushing was cmpleted all f the sheet piles were remved using the vibratry hammer. The sheets were decntaminated and stred n site fr future reuse. 11 Field Observatins The 65 ft reinfrced sheet piles culd be installed using the APE 200 vibratry hammer. The 5 ft reinfrcements f the tp and bttm f the sheet piles were adequate fr the driving cnditins encuntered. The field splicing prcedure was verified and the tp 60 feet was successfully spliced t the bttm sheet nce the tp 5 feet f reinfrcing had been remved. Drivability f the 120 ft spliced sheet with the selected hammer was verified. It was necessary t vibrate the sheet piles in rder t clear bstructins in the last 15 feet. Flushing was pssible fr the cmplete length f the sealable cavity, but it was nticeably mre difficult in the last 10 t 15 feet. 6. DISCUSSION The test demnstratin verified the pile fabricatins, the driving methds, the field splice and flushing prcedures fr installing 120 ft lng WEZ95 Waterl Barrier sheet piling as a cut-ff wall at this site.
